Helically chiral Pd(ii) complexes containing intramolecular PdPd metallophilicity as circularly polarized molecular phosphors

The nature of metallophilic interactions in closed-shell d8-d8 metal complexes

We have quantum chemically analyzed the closed-shell d8-d8 metallophilic interaction in dimers of square planar [M(CO)2X2] complexes (M = Ni, Pd, Pt; X = Cl, Br, I) using dispersion-corrected density functional theory at ZORA-BLYP-D3(BJ)/TZ2P level of theory. Our purpose is to reveal the nature of the [X2(CO)2M]⋯[M(CO)2X2] bonding mechanism by analyzing trends upon variations in M and X. Our analyses reveal that the formation of the [M(CO)2X2]2 dimers is favored by an increasingly stabilizing electrostatic interaction when the M increases in size and by more stabilizing dispersion interactions promoted by the larger X. In addition, there is an overlooked covalent component stemming from metal-metal and ligand-ligand donor-acceptor interactions. Thus, at variance with the currently accepted picture, the d8-d8 metallophilicity is attractive, and the formation of [M(CO)2X2]2 dimers is not a purely dispersion-driven phenomenon.

Achieving Circularly Polarized Phosphorescence through Noncovalent Clipping of Metallotweezers

Circularly polarized phosphorescent materials, based on host-guest complexation, have received significant attention due to their outstanding emission performance in solutions. Recent studies have primarily focused on macrocyclic host-guest complexes. To broaden the scope of this research, there is a keen pursuit of developing novel chiral phosphorescent host-guest systems. Metallotweezers with square-planar d8 transition metal complexes emerge as promising candidates for achieving this objective. Specifically, metallotweezers, comprising platinum(II) terpyridine and gold(III) diphenylpyridine pincers on a diphenylpyridine scaffold, have been designed and synthesized. Due to the preorganization effect rendered by the diphenylpyridine scaffold, the resulting metallotweezers are capable of complexing with each other and forming quadruple stacking structures. The phosphorescent emission is enhanced owing to the synergistic rigidifying and shielding effects. Meanwhile, the steric effect of chiral (1R) pinene units on the platinum(II) terpyridine pincers results in a stereospecific twist for the quadruple stacking structures. Thus, the chirality transfers from the molecular to the supramolecular level. By a combination of phosphorescent enhancement and supramolecular chirality for the clipping complex, circularly polarized phosphorescent emission is achieved. Overall, noncovalent clipping of metallotweezers exemplified in the current study presents a novel and effective approach toward solution-processable circularly polarized phosphorescent materials.

Mono and Dinuclear Palladium Pincer Complexes of NNSe Ligand as a Catalyst for Decarboxylative Direct C-H Heteroarylation of (Hetero)arenes

This report describes the synthesis of a new NNSe pincer ligand and its mono- and dinuclear palladium(II) pincer complexes. In the absence of a base, a dinuclear palladium pincer complex (C1) was isolated, while in the presence of Et3 N base a mononuclear palladium pincer complex (C2) was obtained. The new ligand and complexes were characterized using techniques like 1 H, 13 C{1 H} nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Visible), and cyclic voltammetry. Both the complexes showed pincer coordination mode with a distorted square planar geometry. The complex C1 has two pincer ligands attached through a Pd-Pd bond in a dinuclear pincer fashion. The air and moisture-insensitive, thermally robust palladium pincer complexes were used as the catalyst for decarboxylative direct C-H heteroarylation of (hetero)arenes. Among the complexes, dinuclear pincer complex C1 showed better catalytic activity. A variety of (hetero)arenes were successfully activated (43-87 % yield) using only 2.5 mol % of catalyst loading under mild reaction conditions. The PPh3 and Hg poisoning experiments suggested a homogeneous nature of catalysis. A plausible reaction pathway was proposed for the dinuclear palladium pincer complex catalyzed decarboxylative C-H bond activation reaction of (hetero)arenes.

Circularly polarized near-infrared phosphorescence of chiral chromium(III) complexes

Homoleptic Cr(III) complexes containing anionic tridentate 1,8-(bisoxazolyl)carbazolide ligands are phosphorescent in deaerated solutions with peak maxima in the range of 813-845 nm. The ligand carbon-centred chirality has been transferred to the helical chirality of the complexes and hence induced circularly polarized NIR-emissions with dissymmetry factor in the scale of 2.0 × 10^-3.
