Sequential Selective Dissolution of Coinage Metals in Recyclable Ionic Media

Coinage metals Cu, Ag, and Au are essential for modern electronics and their recycling from waste materials is becoming increasingly important to guarantee the security of their supply. Designing new sustainable and selective procedures that would substitute currently used processes is crucial. Here, we describe an unprecedented approach for the sequential dissolution of single metals from Cu, Ag, and Au mixtures using biomass-derived ionic solvents and green oxidants. First, Cu can be selectively dissolved in the presence of Ag and Au with a choline chloride/urea/H2O2 mixture, followed by the dissolution of Ag in lactic acid/H2O2. Finally, the metallic Au, which is not soluble in either solution above, is dissolved in choline chloride/urea/Oxone. Subsequently, the metals were simply and quantitatively recovered from dissolutions, and the solvents were recycled and reused. The applicability of the developed approach was demonstrated by recovering metals from electronic waste substrates such as printed circuit boards, gold fingers, and solar panels. The dissolution reactions and selectivity were explored with different analytical techniques and DFT calculations. We anticipate our approach will pave a new way for the contemporary and sustainable recycling of multi-metal waste substrates.

Temperature-Dependent Dielectric Relaxation Measurements of (Betaine + Urea + Water) Deep Eutectic Solvent in Hz-GHz Frequency Window: Microscopic Insights into Constituent Contributions and Relaxation Mechanisms

A combined experimental and simulation study of dielectric relaxation (DR) of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of betaine, urea, and water with the composition [Betaine:Urea:Water = 11.7:12:1 (weight ratio) and 9:18:5 (molar ratio)] was performed to explore and understand the interaction and dynamics of this system. Temperature-dependent (303 ≤ T/K ≤ 343) measurements were performed over 9 decades of frequency, combining three different measurement setups. Measured DR, comprising four distinct steps with relaxation times spreading over a few picoseconds to several nanoseconds, was found to agree well with simulations. The simulated total DR spectra, upon dissection into three self (intraspecies) and three cross (interspecies) interaction contributions, revealed that the betaine-betaine self-term dominated (∼65%) the relaxation, while the urea-urea and water-water interactions contributed only ∼7% and ∼1%, respectively. The cross-terms (betaine-urea, betaine-water, and urea-water) together accounted for <30% of the total DR. The slowest DR component with a time constant of ∼1-10 ns derived dominant contribution from betaine-betaine interactions, where betaine-water and urea-water interactions also contributed. The subnanosecond (0.1-0.6 ns) time scale originated from all interactions except betaine-water interaction. An extensive interaction of water with betaine and urea severely reduced the average number of water-water H-bonds (∼0.7) and heavily decreased the static dielectric constant of water in this DES (εs ∼ 2). Furthermore, simulated first rank collective single particle reorientational relaxations (C1(t)) and the structural H-bond fluctuation dynamics (CHB (t)) exhibited multiexponential kinetics with time scales that corresponded well with those found both in the simulated and measured DR.

Water rotational relaxation time measurement by shortwave infrared micro spectroscopy(SWIR) at sub-zero temperatures

The shortwave infrared spectroscopy (SWIR) is the noble method which allows to evaluate the rotational relaxation time of water (RRTW) in a sample. Because SWIR requires the reference sample of pure water, the measurement temperature is limited only at above 0 °C. In this study, we expanded this temperature limitation of SWIR by using alternative reference solutions with freezing points below 0 °C, including sugar and glycerol solutions. The results showed that some reference sample solutions are useable for evaluating RRTW in samples below 0 °C. It was found that RRTW in solution measured by newly proposed SWIR agrees with RRTW measured by dielectric spectroscopy in 10% accuracy when it is shorter than 100psec.

Ionic Conductivity of a Lithium-Doped Deep Eutectic Solvent: Glass Formation and Rotation-Translation Coupling

Deep eutectic solvents with admixed lithium salts are considered as electrolytes in electrochemical devices, such as batteries or supercapacitors. Compared to eutectic mixtures of hydrogen-bond donors and lithium salts, their raw-material costs are significantly lower. Not much is known about glassy freezing and rotational-translation coupling of such systems. Here, we investigate these phenomena by applying dielectric spectroscopy to the widely studied deep eutectic solvent glyceline, to which 1 and 5 mol % LiCl were added. Our study covers a wide temperature range, including a deeply supercooled state. The temperature dependences of the detected dipolar reorientation dynamics and ionic direct current (dc) conductivity reveal the signatures of glassy freezing. In comparison to pure glyceline, the lithium admixture leads to a reduction of ionic conductivity, which is accompanied by a reduction of the rotational dipolar mobility. However, this reduction is much smaller than that for deep eutectic solvents (DESs), where one main component is lithium salt, which we trace back to the lower glass-transition temperatures of lithium-doped DESs. In contrast to pure glyceline, the ionic and dipolar dynamics become increasingly decoupled at low temperatures and obey a fractional Debye-Stokes-Einstein relation, as previously found in other glass-forming liquids. The obtained results demonstrate the relevance of decoupling effects and glass transition to the enhancement of the technically relevant ionic conductivity in such lithium-doped DESs.

Translational and reorientational dynamics in carboxylic acid-based deep eutectic solvents

The glass formation and the dipolar reorientational motions in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are frequently overlooked, despite their crucial role in defining the room-temperature physiochemical properties. To understand the effects of these dynamics on the ionic conductivity and their relation to the mechanical properties of the DES, we conducted broadband dielectric and rheological spectroscopy over a wide temperature range on three well-established carboxylic acid-based natural DESs. These are the eutectic mixtures of choline chloride with oxalic acid (oxaline), malonic acid (maline), and phenylacetic acid (phenylaceline). In all three DESs, we observe signs of a glass transition in the temperature dependence of their dipolar reorientational and structural dynamics, as well as varying degrees of motional decoupling between the different observed dynamics. Maline and oxaline display a breaking of the Walden rule near the glass-transition temperature, while the relation between the dc conductivity and dipolar relaxation time in both maline and phenylaceline is best described by a power law. The glass-forming properties of the investigated systems not only govern the orientational dipolar motions and rheological properties, which are of interest from a fundamental point of view, but they also affect the dc conductivity, even at room temperature, which is of high technical relevance.

Rotational dynamics, ionic conductivity, and glass formation in a ZnCl2-based deep eutectic solvent

Glass formation and reorientational motions are widespread but often-neglected features of deep eutectic solvents although both can be relevant for the technically important ionic conductivity at room temperature. Here, we investigate these properties for two mixtures of ethylene glycol and ZnCl2, which were recently considered superior electrolyte materials for application in zinc-ion batteries. For this purpose, we employed dielectric spectroscopy performed in a broad temperature range, extending from the supercooled state at low temperatures up to the liquid phase around room temperature and beyond. We find evidence for a relaxation process arising from dipolar reorientation dynamics, which reveals the clear signatures of glassy freezing. This freezing also governs the temperature dependence of the ionic dc conductivity. We compare the obtained results with those for deep eutectic solvents that are formed by the same hydrogen-bond donor, ethylene glycol, but by two different salts, choline chloride and lithium triflate. The four materials reveal significantly different ionic and reorientational dynamics. Moreover, we find varying degrees of decoupling of rotational dipolar and translational ionic motions, which can partly be described by a fractional Debye-Stokes-Einstein relation. The typical glass-forming properties of these solvents strongly affect their room-temperature conductivity.

What is behind a gas stream scrubbing liquid? Monoethanolamine/water mixtures as seen by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy

High-quality dielectric data for monoethanolamine (MEA)/water mixtures covering the entire miscibility range are presented. For MEA concentrations c1 ≥ 1 M the obtained complex permittivity spectra, covering the frequency range from 0.05 to 89 GHz, are best described by a sum of four Debye relaxations. Modes at ∼3 GHz and ∼10 GHz are solute-specific. Whilst the first can be assigned to MEA aggregates, the second is a composite arising from "free" MEA dipoles with dynamically retarded water hydrating them. The relaxations at ∼18 GHz and ∼200 GHz essentially reflect the cooperative H-bond fluctuations of more-or-less unperturbed "bulk" water, albeit with minor solute contributions. Evaluation of the bulk-water amplitude reveals that in water-rich mixtures (c1 ≤ 3.5 M) Zt = 3.5 ± 0.2 H2O molecules hydrate a MEA molecule. Then Zt drops linearly, reaching zero for neat MEA. Supported by the literature, this concentration dependence suggests that only H2O molecules H-bonded to the NH2 and OH groups of MEA contribute to Zt. At concentrations beyond hydration shell overlap (c1 ≥ 3.5 M) these H-bonds are gradually eliminated, while new interactions with neighboring MEA molecules are formed. From the evaluation of the MEA-specific amplitudes we conclude that for c1 ≥ 2 M, including neat MEA, ∼35% of the solute molecules are in aggregates, where breaking the intermolecular NH⋯O hydrogen bond determines the dynamics.

Anion dynamics and motional decoupling in a glycerol-choline chloride deep eutectic solvent studied by one- and two-dimensional 35Cl NMR

Chlorine-35 is among the few nuclides that provide an experimental handle on the anion dynamics in choline based deep eutectic solvents. By combining several nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, the present work examines the Cl- motions within glyceline, a glycerol : choline chloride 2 : 1 solution, in a large temperature range down to the glass transition temperature Tg. The applied methods include spin relaxometry, second-order line shape analysis, as well as two-dimensional central-transition exchange and stimulated-echo spectroscopy. The finding of unstructured central-transition NMR spectra characterized by a relatively small average quadrupolar coupling attests to a highly disordered, essentially nondirectional anionic coordination in glyceline. For temperatures larger than about 1.3Tg the chlorine motions are well coupled to those of the glycerol and the choline moieties. At lower temperatures the local translational anion dynamics become Arrhenian and increasingly faster than the motion of glyceline's matrix molecules. Upon further cooling, the overall ionic conductivity continues to display a super-Arrhenius behavior, implying that the choline cations rather than the Cl anions dominate the long-range charge transport also near Tg.

Ethaline and related systems: may be not “deep” eutectics but clearly interesting ionic liquids

Ethaline, the 1:2 molar ratio mixture of ethylene glycol (EG) and choline chloride (ChCl), is generally regarded as a typical type III deep eutectic solvent (DES). However, careful differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of EG + ChCl mixtures surprisingly revealed that the liquidus lines of the phase diagram apparently follow the predictions for an ideal binary non-electrolyte mixture. Applying broad-band dielectric relaxation spectroscopy to room-temperature solutions of ChCl, and of the related salts choline iodide and chlorocholine chloride, in EG up to saturation, we explored the possible reasons for this conundrum. It appears that in these solutions free ions are rather scarce. Instead, contact ion pairs and larger aggregates predominate.

Typical at glance but interesting when analyzed in detail: A story of Tris hydration

This paper provides results of dielectric relaxation (DR) spectroscopy of aqueous solutions of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) covering frequencies of 0.05 ≤ ν/GHz ≤89. The DR spectra can be well fit by a sum of Cole-Cole relaxation, assigned to the solute, and 2 Debye modes already observed for neat water. Analysis of the amplitudes reveals that Tris is hydrated by 7 H₂Os up to its solubility limit. However, the rather high effective solute dipole moment of ≈12 D suggests that H₂O dipoles in contact with Tris should reorient independently from it. Accordingly, an alternative description of the DR spectra with a superposition of 4 Debyerelaxations was attempted. In this model, the slowest mode at ∼4 GHz arises from solute reorientation and that at ∼8 GHz was assigned to dynamically retarded hydration water, whereas relaxations at ∼18 and ∼500 GHz are again those of (rather unperturbed) bulk water. Analysis of the solvent-related modes shows that Tris indeed slows down 7-8 H₂O molecules. However, the solute-solvent interaction strength is rather weak, excluding the rotation of an alleged Tris-(7-8) H₂O cluster as an entity. The now derived effective dipole moment of (6.3 ± 0.5) D for the bare Tris molecule allows speculations on its conformation. With the help of computational methods, we suggest that Tris dissolved in water most likely possesses an intramolecular H-bond between the nitrogen and hydrogen atoms of amino and hydroxyl groups, respectively. In addition, computational results indicate that the seven hydration H₂Os found by DR bind directly to the Tris OH groups.

Long-Range Electrostatic Colloidal Interactions and Specific Ion Effects in Deep Eutectic Solvents

While the traditional consensus dictates that high ion concentrations lead to negligible long-range electrostatic interactions, we demonstrate that electrostatic correlations prevail in deep eutectic solvents where intrinsic ion concentrations often surpass 2.5 M. Here we present an investigation of intermicellar interactions in 1:2 choline chloride:glycerol and 1:2 choline bromide:glycerol using small-angle neutron scattering. Our results show that long-range electrostatic repulsions between charged colloidal particles occur in these solvents. Interestingly, micelle morphology and electrostatic interactions are modulated by specific counterion condensation at the micelle interface despite the exceedingly high concentration of the native halide from the solvent. This modulation follows the trends described by the Hofmeister series for specific ion effects. The results are rationalized in terms of predominant ion-ion correlations, which explain the reduction in the effective ionic strength of the continuum and the observed specific ion effects.

Lithium-salt-based deep eutectic solvents: Importance of glass formation and rotation-translation coupling for the ionic charge transport

Lithium-salt-based deep eutectic solvents, where the only cation is Li⁺, are promising candidates as electrolytes in electrochemical energy-storage devices, such as batteries. We have performed broadband dielectric spectroscopy on three such systems, covering a broad temperature and dynamic range that extends from the low-viscosity liquid around room temperature down to the glassy state approaching the glass-transition temperature. We detect a relaxational process that can be ascribed to dipolar reorientational dynamics and exhibits the clear signatures of glassy freezing. We find that the temperature dependence of the ionic dc conductivity and its room-temperature value also are governed by the glassy dynamics of these systems, depending, e.g., on the glass-transition temperature and fragility. Compared to the previously investigated corresponding systems, containing choline chloride instead of a lithium salt, both the reorientational and ionic dynamics are significantly reduced due to variations in the glass-transition temperature and the higher ionic potential of the lithium ions. These lithium-based deep eutectic solvents partly exhibit significant decoupling of the dipolar reorientational and the ionic translational dynamics and approximately follow a fractional Debye-Stokes-Einstein relation, leading to an enhancement of the dc conductivity, especially at low temperatures. The presented results clearly reveal the importance of decoupling effects and of the typical glass-forming properties of these systems for the technically relevant room-temperature conductivity.

On the coupling between ionic conduction and dipolar relaxation in deep eutectic solvents: Influence of hydration and glassy dynamics

We have studied the ionic conductivity and the dipolar reorientational dynamics of aqueous solutions of a prototypical deep eutectic solvent (DES), ethaline, by dielectric spectroscopy in a broad range of frequencies (MHz-Hz) and for temperatures ranging from 128 to 283 K. The fraction of water in the DES was varied systematically to cover different regimes, starting from the pure DES and its water-in-DES mixtures to the diluted electrolyte solutions. Depending on these parameters, different physical states were examined, including low viscosity liquid, supercooled viscous liquid, amorphous solid, and freeze-concentrated solution. Both the ionic conductivity and the reorientational relaxation exhibited characteristic features of glassy dynamics that could be quantified from the deviation from the Arrhenius temperature dependence and non-exponential decay of the relaxation function. A transition occurred between the water-in-DES regime (<40 wt. %), where the dipolar relaxation and ionic conductivity remained inversely proportional to each other, and the DES-in-water regime (>40 wt. %), where a clear rotation-translation decoupling was observed. This suggests that for a low water content, on the timescale covered by this study (∼10^-6 to 1 s), the rotational and transport properties of ethaline aqueous solutions obey classical hydrodynamic scaling despite these systems being presumably spatially microheterogeneous. A fractional scaling is observed in the DES-in-water regime due to the formation of a maximally freeze-concentrated DES aqueous solution coexisting with frozen water domains at sub-ambient temperature.

Vortex assisted liquid-liquid microextraction based on in situ formation of a natural deep eutectic solvent by microwave irradiation for the determination of beta-blockers in water samples

In this study, a simple, green, and reliable method combining vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction based on in situ formation of a novel hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES-VA-LLME) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed for the determination of metoprolol and propranolol in water samples. The novel NADES was synthesized in situ within only 20 s by subjecting the water sample containing azelaic acid and thymol to microwave irradiation at 50 ˚C. Initial studies indicated that a 17:1 ratio of thymol to azelaic acid yielded the highest response for analytes. The influence of 7 parameters, including NADES volume, salt amount, sample pH, vortex time, centrifugation time, microwave time, and temperature, were screened using a 2^7-3 fractional factorial design. The obtained significant parameters were optimized by response surface methodology employing a Box-Behnken design. The method displayed satisfactory linearity (r=0.9996) for metoprolol and propranolol with limits of detection of 0.2 and 0.1 µg/L, respectively. The relative standard deviation at 2.5, 40, and 80 µg/L levels was lower than 6%, with accuracy in the range of 90.8-100.2%. Enrichment factors were 147.0 and 144.4 for metoprolol and propranolol, respectively. This study demonstrates that the developed in situ NADES-VA-LLME-HPLC technique can be considered as a fast and environmentally friendly alternative for isolation/preconcentration of β-blockers from water samples.
