Metal-Organic-Framework-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Matrix-Encapsulating Co0.5Ni0.5 Alloy as a Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalyst for Zinc-Air Batteries

The development of low-cost, high-performance oxygen electrocatalysts is of great significance for energy conversion and storage. As a potential substitute for precious metal electrocatalysts, the construction of efficient and cost-effective oxygen electrocatalysts is conducive to promoting the widespread application of zinc-air batteries. Herein, CoxNiyMOF nanoparticles encapsulated within a carbon matrix were synthesized and employed as cathode catalysts in zinc-air batteries. Co0.5Ni0.5MOF exhibits superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance and durability. The zinc-air battery assembled with Co0.5Ni0.5MOF as the air cathode exhibits a maximum power density of 138.6 mW·cm-2. These improvements are mainly attributed to the optimized metal composition of the cobalt-nickel alloy, which increases the specific surface area of the material and optimizes its pore structure. Significantly, the optimization of the electronic structure and active sites within the material has led to amplified ORR/OER activity and better zinc-air battery performance. This study underscores the immense promise of Co0.5Ni0.5MOF catalysts as feasible substitutes for commercial Pt/C catalysts in zinc-air batteries.

Elucidating the performance of hexamethylene tetra-amine interlinked bimetallic NiCo-MOF for efficient electrochemical hydrogen and oxygen evolution

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) play a significant role in the electrocatalysis of water due to their large surface area and availability of increased numbers of pores. For the inaugural time, we examine the effectiveness of a hexamethylene tetra-amine (HMT)-induced 3D NiCo-MOF-based nanostructure as a potent bifunctional electrocatalyst with superior performance for overall water splitting in alkaline environments. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the as-synthesized bifunctional catalyst were examined thoroughly before analyzing its behavior towards electrochemical water splitting. The HMT-based NiCo-MOF demonstrated small overpotential values of 274 mV and 330 mV in reaching a maximum current density of 30 mA cm-2 for hydrogen and oxygen evolution mechanisms, respectively. The Tafel parameter also showed favorable HER/OER reaction kinetics, with slopes of 78 mV dec-1 and 86 mV dec-1 determined during the electrochemical evaluation. Remarkably, the NiCo-HMT electrode exhibited a double-layer capacitance of 4 mF cm-2 for hydrogen evolution and 23 mF cm-2 for oxygen evolution, while maintaining remarkable stability even after continuous operation for 20 hours. This research offers a valuable blueprint for implementing a cost-effective and durable MOF-based bifunctional catalytic system that has proven to be effective for complete water splitting. Decomposition of water under higher current densities is crucial for effective long-term generation and commercial consumption of hydrogen.

Bimetallic Organic Frameworks via In Situ Solvothermal Sol-Gel-Crystal and Sol-Crystal Transformation as Durable Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The in situ solvothermal conversion of metal-organic gels (MOGs) to crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represents a versatile and ingenious strategy that has been employed for the synthesis of MOF materials with specific morphologies, high yield, and improved functional properties. Herein, we have adopted an in situ solvothermal conversion of bimetallic MOGs to crystalline bimetallic MOFs with the aim of introducing a redox-active metal heterogeneity into the monometallic counterpart. The formation of bimetallic NiZn-MOF and CoZn-MOF via in situ solvothermal sol-gel-crystal and sol-crystal transformation is found to depend on the solvent systems used. The sol-to-gel-to-crystal transformation of NiZn-MOF via the formation of NiZn-MOG is found to occur through the gradual disruption of gel fibers leading to subsequent formation of microcrystals and single crystals of NiZn-MOF. These bimetallic MOFs and MOGs serve as promising electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with an excellent methanol tolerance property, which can be attributed to the enhanced mass and charge transfer, higher oxygen vacancies, and bimetallic synergistic interactions among the heterometals. This work demonstrates a convenient strategy for producing bimetallic MOGs to MOFs through the introduction of a redox-active metal heterogeneity in the inorganic hybrid functional materials for fundamental and applied research. Our results connect MOGs and MOFs which have been regarded as having opposite physical states, that is, soft vs hard, and provide promising structural correlation between MOGs and MOFs at the molecular level.

Self-Reconstructed Two-Dimensional Cluster-Based Co-Organic Layer Heterojunctions for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reactions

When it comes to an efficient catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the production of renewable energy and chemicals, the construction of heterogeneous structures is crucial to break the linear scalar relationship of a single catalyst. This heterogeneous structure construction helps creatively achieve high activity and stability. However, the synthesis process of heterogeneous crystalline materials is often complex and challenging to capture and reproduce, which limits their application. Here, the dynamic process of structural changes in Co-MOFs in alkali was captured by in situ powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, and several self-reconfigured MOF heterogeneous materials with different structures were stably isolated. The created β-Co(OH)2/Co-MOF heterojunction structure facilitates rapid mass-charge transfer and exposure of active sites, which significantly enhanced OER activity. Experimental results show that this heterogeneous structure achieves a low overpotential of 333 mV at 10 mA cm-2. The findings provide new insights and directions for the search for highly reactive cobalt-based MOFs for sustainable energy technologies.

Eu(III)-Functionalized MOF-Based Dual-Emission Ratiometric Sensor Integrated with Logic Gate Operation for Efficient Detection of Hippuric Acid in Urine and Serum

With the introduction of Eu³⁺ ions as the secondary fluorescent signal reporter and sensing active sites, a dual-emission ratiometric sensor of Eu³⁺@NiMOF (Eu³⁺ functional NiMOF) for hippuric acid (HA) detection in urine and serum was fabricated via the postsynthetic encapsulating strategy. Based on the two emission signals at 441 nm (turn-on) and 628 nm (turn-off), the produced Eu³⁺@NiMOF ratiometric sensor provided enhanced sensitivity, higher selectivity, and 9.7 times lower limits of detection (LOD) for the detection of HA (2.38 μM, 0.42 μg·mL^-1) than that of the pristine NiMOF. Considering the high sensitivity and visualization results, further exploration of intelligent applications in the HA sensing process was carried out by constructing a tandem combinational logic gate to improve the practicability and convenience with the help of a smartphone. This work provides a promising approach for developing MOF-based ratiometric sensors to detect biomarkers.

Cu3(BTC)2 nanoflakes synthesized in an ionic liquid/water binary solvent and their catalytic properties

Low-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit enhanced properties compared with three-dimensional (3D) geometry MOFs in many fields. In this work, we demonstrate the synthesis of Cu₃(BTC)₂ (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) nanoflakes in a binary solvent of ionic liquid (IL) and water. Such a MOF architecture has a high surface area and abundant unsaturated coordination metal sites, making them attractive for adsorption and catalysis. For example, in catalyzing the oxidation reactions of a series of alcohols, the Cu₃(BTC)₂ nanoflakes exhibit a high performance that is superior to Cu₃(BTC)₂ microparticles synthesized in a conventional solvent. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the IL accelerates the crystallization of Cu₃(BTC)₂, while water plays a role in stripping the Cu₃(BTC)₂ blocks that are formed at an early stage through its attack on the crystal plane of Cu₃(BTC)₂. Such an in situ crystallization-exfoliation process that uses an IL/water solvent opens a new route for producing low-dimensional MOFs.

Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets: Synthesis and Applications in Electrocatalysis and Photocatalysis

Two-dimensional metal-organic nanosheets (2D MONs) are an emerging class of ultrathin, porous, and crystalline materials. The organic/inorganic hybrid nature offers MONs distinct advantages over other inorganic nanosheets in terms of diversity of organic ligands and metal notes. Compared to bulk three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks, 2D MONs possess merits of high density and readily accessible catalytic sites, reduced diffusion pathways for reactants/products, and fast electron transport. These features endow MONs with enhanced physical/chemical properties and are ideal for heterogeneous catalysis. In this Review, state-of-the-art synthetic methods for the fabrication of 2D MONs were summarized. The advances of 2D MONs-based materials for electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂ RR), and electro-/photocatalytic organic transformations were systematically discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives regarding future design and synthesis of 2D MONs for high-performance electrocatalysis and photocatalysis were provided.

Controlled synthesis of trimetallic nitrogen-incorporated CoNiFe layered double hydroxide electrocatalysts for boosting the oxygen evolution reaction

The development of non-precious trimetallic electrocatalysts exhibiting high activity and stability is a promising strategy for fabricating efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, trimetallic nitrogen-incorporated CoNiFe (N–CoNiFe) was produced to solve the low OER efficiency using a facile co-precipitation method in the presence of ethanolamine (EA) ligands. A series of CoNiFe catalysts at different EA concentrations were also investigated to determine the effects of the ligand in the co-precipitation of a trimetallic system. The introduction of an optimized EA concentration (20 mM) improved the electrocatalytic performance of N–CoNiFe dramatically, with an overpotential of 318 mV at 10 mA cm⁻² in 1.0 M KOH and a Tafel slope of 72.2 mV dec⁻¹. In addition, N–CoNiFe shows high durability in the OER process with little change in the overpotential (ca. 16.0 mV) at 10 mA cm⁻² after 2000 cycles, which was smaller than that for commercial Ir/C (38.0 mV).

A trimetallic nitrogen-incorporated CoNiFe exhibited good catalytic properties toward the oxygen evolution reaction, e.g., high stability and low overpotential (318 mV at 10 mA cm⁻²).

Two new bis(pyridine)-bis(amide)-based copper(II) coordination compounds for the electrochemical detection of trace Cr(VI) and efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Two new metal-organic compounds (MOCs) [Cu(L)0.5(3-nba)2] (1) and [Cu(L)(2,5-tdc)] (2) have been hydrothermally synthesized by employing the ligand N,N′-di(3-pyridyl)adipoamide (L) and two carboxylic acids (3-Hnba = 3-nitrobenzoic acid, 2,5-H2tdc = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid) as ligands. Compound 1 displays a metal-organic chain-like structure formed by the {Cu2(3-nba)4} double-paddle wheel units and the µ 2-bridging L ligands. The adjacent polymeric chains form a supramolecular layered structure through hydrogen bonding. Compound 2 shows a 3D metal-organic polymeric framework derived from Cu-L layers and µ 2-bridging 2,5-tdc ligands, which presents a 3,5-connected {4.62}{4.66.83} topology. The electrochemical and electrocatalytic behavior of the two compounds has been studied in detail. Carbon paste working electrodes modified with compounds 1 and 2 can be used as highly selective sensors for detecting traces Cr(VI). Both electrodes show also electrocatalytic performance in oxygen evolution reactions (OERs).

Carbonaceous Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalysts: From Defect and Doping-Induced Activity over Hybrid Compounds to Ordered Framework Structures

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is expected to be of great importance for the future energy conversion and storage in form of hydrogen by water electrolysis. Besides the traditional noble-metal or transition metal oxide-based catalysts, carbonaceous electrocatalysts are of great interest due to their huge structural and compositional variety and unrestricted abundance. This review provides a summary of recent advances in the field of carbon-based OER catalysts ranging from "pure" or unintentionally doped carbon allotropes over heteroatom-doped carbonaceous materials and carbon/transition metal compounds to metal oxide composites where the role of carbon is mainly assigned to be a conductive support. Furthermore, the review discusses the recent developments in the field of ordered carbon framework structures (metal organic framework and covalent organic framework structures) that potentially allow a rational design of heteroatom-doped 3D porous structures with defined composition and spatial arrangement of doping atoms to deepen the understanding on the OER mechanism on carbonaceous structures in the future. Besides introducing the structural and compositional origin of electrochemical activity, the review discusses the mechanism of the catalytic activity of carbonaceous materials, their stability under OER conditions, and potential synergistic effects in combination with metal (or metal oxide) co-catalysts.

2D metal-organic framework-based materials for electrocatalytic, photocatalytic and thermocatalytic applications

Ultrathin two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) have recently attracted extensive interest in various catalytic fields (e.g., electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, thermocatalysis) due to their ultrathin thickness, large surface area, abundant accessible unsaturated active sites and tunable surface properties. Besides tuning the intrinsic properties of pristine 2D MOFs by changing the metal nodes and organic ligands, one of the hot research trends is to develop 2D MOF hybrids and 2D MOF-derived materials with higher stability and conductivity in order to further increase their activity and durability. Here, the synthesis of 2D MOF nanosheets is briefly summarized and discussed. More attention is focused on summaries and discussions about the applications of these 2D MOFs, their hybrids and their derived materials as electrocatalysts, photocatalysts and thermocatalysts. The superior properties and catalytic performance of these 2D MOF-based catalysts compared to their 3D MOF counterparts in electrocatalysis, photocatalysis and thermocatalysis are highlighted. The enhanced activities of 2D MOFs, their hybrids and derivatives come from abundant accessible active sites, a high density of unsaturated metal nodes, ultrathin thickness, and tunable microenvironments around the MOFs. Views regarding current and future challenges in the field, and new advances in science and technology to meet these challenges, are also presented. Finally, conclusions and outlooks in this field are provided.
