Recent highlights and future prospects on mixed-metal MOFs as emerging supercapacitor candidates

Layered double hydroxide-based electrode materials derived from metal-organic frameworks: synthesis and applications in supercapacitors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs) due to their highly porous structures, tunable chemical compositions, and diverse morphologies. However, their applications are hindered by low conductivity and poor cycling performance. A novel approach for resolving this issue involves the growth of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) using MOFs as efficient templates or precursors for electrode material preparation. This method effectively enhances the stability, electrical conductivity, and mass transport ability of MOFs. The MOF-derived LDH exhibits a well-defined porous micro-/nano-structure, facilitating the dispersion of active sites and preventing the aggregation of LDHs. Firstly, this paper introduces synthesis strategies for converting MOFs into LDHs. Subsequently, recent research progress in MOF-derived LDHs encompassing pristine LDH powders, LDH composites, and LDH-based arrays, along with their applications in SCs, is overviewed. Finally, the challenges associated with MOF-derived LDH electrode materials and potential solutions are discussed.

Multifunctional Metal-Organic Frameworks as Catalysts for Tandem Reactions

Owing to well-defined structure as well as easy synthesis and modification, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising catalysts for tandem reactions. In this article, we aim to summarize the development of multifunctional MOFs, including mixed metal MOFs, MOFs that are synergistically catalyzed by metal nodes and organic linkers, MOFs loaded with metal nanoparticles, etc, as heterogenous catalysts for tandem reactions over the past five years. This concept briefly discusses on present challenges, future trends, and prospects of multifunctional MOFs catalysts in tandem reactions.

Effect of Crystal Morphology on Electrochemical Performances of IRH-2 and IRH-2/PANI Composite for Supercapacitor Electrodes

In the context of recent progress in designing metal-organic framework (MOF)-based supercapacitor electrodes, we report herein the successful growth of two different crystal morphologies of a cerium-based MOF, octahedral crystals named IRH-2-O and elongated square-bipyramidal crystals named IRH-2-ESBP (IRH = Institute de Recherche sur l'Hydrogène). The identical crystal structure of both materials was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray mapping analysis corroborated this fact and showed the crystal shape variation versus the surface composition of synthesized materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and PXRD were used to confirm the purity of pristine MOFs as well as desired MOF//PANI composites. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy highlighted the effect of crystal shape on the electrochemical performance of IRH-2 MOFs; the specific capacitance tripled from 43.1 F·g-1 for IRH-2-O to 125.57 F·g-1 for IRH-2-ESBP at 5 mV·s-1. The cycling stability was notably ameliorated from 7 K for IRH-2-O to 20 K for IRH-2-ESBP. Regarding the composites, the cell voltage was notably ameliorated from 1.8 to 1.95 V. However, the electrochemical performance of IRH-2/PANI composites was drastically decreased due to instability in the acidic media. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first work that related the MOF crystal shape and the electrochemical performance.

Stepwise construction of multi-component metal-organic frameworks

Multi-component metal-organic frameworks (MC-MOFs) are crystalline porous materials containing multiple organic ligands or mixed metals, which manifest new properties beyond the linear combination of the single component. However, the traditional one-pot synthesis method for MOFs is not always applicable for synthesizing MC-MOFs due to the competitive coordination of multiple ligands and metals. Therefore, the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs has been explored, which enables more precise control of the heterogeneity within the ordered MC-MOFs. This review provides a summary of the synthesis strategies, namely, ligand exchange, coordinative modification, covalent modification, ligand metalation, cluster metalation, and use of mixed-metal precursors, for the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of MC-MOFs with ordered arrangements of multiple functionalities, focusing on gas adsorption and separation, water remediation, heterogeneous catalysis, luminescence, and chemical sensing.

Metal-ion doping in metal-organic-frameworks: modulating the electronic structure and local coordination for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity

The doping of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with metal-ions has emerged as a powerful strategy for enhancing their catalytic performance. Doping allows for the tailoring of the electronic structure and local coordination environment of MOFs, thus imparting on them unique properties and enhanced functionalities. This frontier article discusses the impact of metal-ion doping on the electronic structure and local coordination of MOFs, highlighting the effects on their electrocatalytic properties in relation to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The fundamental mechanisms underlying these modifications are explored, while recent advances, challenges, and prospects in the field are discussed. In addition, experimental techniques that can be applied to tackle the realization of effective metal-ion doping of MOFs are also noted briefly.

Construction of Well-Defined Two-Dimensional Architectures of Trimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks for High-Performance Symmetric Supercapacitors

The high surface-to-volume ratio and extraordinarily large-surface area of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) architectures have drawn particular interest for use in supercapacitors. To achieve an excellent electrode material for supercapacitors, well-defined 2D nanostructures of novel trimetallic MOFs were developed for supercapacitor applications. Multivariate MOFs (terephthalate and trimesate MOF) with distinctive nanobrick and nanoplate-like structures were successfully synthesized using a straightforward one-step reflux condensation method by combining Ni, Co, and Zn metal species in equimolar ratios with two different ligands. Furthermore, the effects of the tricarboxylic and dicarboxylic ligands on cyclic voltammetry, charge-discharge cycling, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were studied. The derived terephthalate and trimesate MOFs are supported with stainless-steel mesh and provide a suitable electrolyte environment for rapid faradaic reactions with an elevated specific capacity, excellent rate capability, and exceptional cycling stability. It shows a specific capacitance of 582.8 F g-1, a good energy density of 40.47 W h kg-1, and a power density of 687.5 W kg-1 at 5 mA cm-2 with an excellent cyclic stability of 92.44% for 3000 charge-discharge cycles. A symmetric BDC-MOF//BDC-MOF supercapacitor device shows a specific capacitance of 95.22 F g-1 with low capacitance decay, high energy, and power densities which is used for electronic applications. These brand-new trimetallic MOFs display outstanding electrochemical performance and provide a novel strategy for systematically developing high-efficiency energy storage systems.

Poly Tetrazole Containing Thermally Stable and Insensitive Alkali Metal-Based 3D Energetic Metal-Organic Frameworks

Poly tetrazole-containing thermally stable and insensitive alkali metal-based 3D energetic metal-organic frameworks (EMOFs) are promising high energy density materials to balance the sensitivity, stability, and detonation performance of explosives in defense, space, and civilian applications. Herein, the self-assembly of L^3- ligand with alkali metals Na(I) and K(I) was prepared at ambient conditions, introducing two new EMOFs, [Na₃(L)₃(H₂O)₆]_n (1) and [K₃(L)₃(H₂O)₃]_n (2). Single crystal analysis reveals that Na-MOF (1) exhibited a 3D wave-like supramolecular structure with significant hydrogen bonding among the layers, while K-MOF (2) also featured a 3D framework. Both EMOFs were thoroughly characterized by NMR, IR, PXRD, and TGA/DSC analyses. Compounds 1 and 2 show excellent thermal decomposition T_d = 344 and 337 °C, respectively, compared to the presently used benchmark explosives RDX (210 °C), HMX (279 °C), and HNS (318 °C), which is attributed to structural reinforcement induced by extensive coordination. They also show remarkable detonation performance (VOD = 8500 m s^-1, 7320 m s^-1, DP = 26.74 GPa, 20 GPa for 1 and 2, respectively) and insensitivity toward impact and friction (IS ≥ 40 J, FS ≥ 360 N for 1; IS ≥ 40 J, FS ≥ 360 N for 2). Their excellent synthetic feasibility and energetic performance suggest that they are the perfect blend for the replacement of present benchmark explosives such as HNS, RDX, and HMX.

Advances of Electroactive Metal-Organic Frameworks

The preparation of electroactive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications of supercapacitors and batteries has received much attention and remarkable progress during the past few years. MOF-based materials including pristine MOFs, hybrid MOFs or MOF composites, and MOF derivatives are well designed by a combination of organic linkers (e.g., carboxylic acids, conjugated aromatic phenols/thiols, conjugated aromatic amines, and N-heterocyclic donors) and metal salts to construct predictable structures with appropriate properties. This review will focus on construction strategies of pristine MOFs and hybrid MOFs as anodes, cathodes, separators, and electrolytes in supercapacitors and batteries. Descriptions and discussions follow categories of electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), pseudocapacitors (PSCs), and hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) for supercapacitors. In contrast, Li-ion batteries (LIBs), Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs), Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), Sodium-sulfur batteries (SSBs), Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), Zinc-air batteries (ZABs), Aluminum-sulfur batteries (ASBs), and others (e.g., LiSe, NiZn, H⁺ , alkaline, organic, and redox flow batteries) are categorized for batteries.

Hollow CoS2 anchored on hierarchically porous carbon derived from Pien Tze Huang for high-performance supercapacitors

The development of electrode materials with a high specific capacitance, power density, and long-term stability is essential and remains a challenge for developing supercapacitors. Cobalt sulfides (CoS₂) are considered one of the most promising and widely studied electrode materials for supercapacitors. Herein, CoS₂ and hierarchical porous carbon derived from Pien Tze Huang waste are assembled into a cobalt sulfide/carbon (CoS₂/PZH) matrix composite using a one-step hydrothermal method to resolve the challenges of supercapacitors. The resulting CoS₂/PZH composite material exhibits a hierarchical porous structure with hollow CoS₂ embedded in a PZH framework. The uniform dispersion of the hierarchical porous structure CoS₂/PZH is achieved due to the PZH framework, while the uniform decoration of the porous PZH with the hollow CoS₂ prevents the PZH from stacking easily. Moreover, the excellent synergistic effect of the hierarchical porous and hollow structure of CoS₂/PZH can shorten the electron/ion diffusion channels, expose additional active sites, and provide stable structures for subsequent reactions. As a result, the CoS₂/PZH composite material displays a high initial specific capacity of 447.5 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1, a high energy density of 22.38 W h kg^-1, and long-term cycling stability (a retention rate of 92.3% over 10 000 cycles at 5 A g^-1).

Nickel(II) Cluster-Based Pillar-Layered Metal-Organic Frameworks for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Most metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) cannot be used as electrode materials for supercapacitors because of their high costs, poor stabilities in aqueous solutions, inferior intrinsic electrocatalytic activities, and poor conductivities. Herein, the application of two nickel(II) cluster-based pillar-layered MOFs, Ni-mba-Na ([Ni₈(mba)₆(Cl)₂Na(OH^-)₃]_n, H₂mba is 2-mercaptobenzoic acid) and Ni-mba-K ([Ni₈(mba)₆(Cl)₂K(OH^-)₃]_n), as electrode materials are reported. They differ from conductive MOFs because they are insulators with small specific surface areas (<10 m² g^-1), and H²mba is an inexpensive raw material. The conductivities of Ni-mba-Na and Ni-mba-K at 30 °C were 4.002 × 10^-10 and >10^-11 S cm^-1, respectively. They showed excellent supercapacitor performance and stabilities and high inherent densities and specific capacitances. The specific powers of their asymmetric supercapacitors could reach up to 16,000 W kg^-1; the specific energies of Ni-mba-Na and Ni-mba-K were 16.9 and 21.8 Wh kg^-1, respectively. Design recommendations for these MOFs are provided based on their structure and performance differences. This paper shows a novel application of nonconductive MOFs in the energy storage field and design of high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Design of ZIF-67 nanoflake derived NiCo-LDH/rGO hybrid nanostructures for aqueous symmetric supercapattery application under alkaline condition

Well-defined polyhedral ZIF-67 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are usually synthesized using methanol as solvent. In this work, methanol is replaced with deionized water as a solvent to synthesize ZIF-67 MOFs with unique nanoflake morphology. The ZIF-67 nanoflakes are synthesized directly byin situmethod on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to obtain ZIF-67/rGO-xprecursors which are further transformed into NiCo-layered double hydroxide nanocomposites (NiCo-LDH/rGO-x,x = 10, 30, 50 and 90 mg of rGO). The NiCo-LDH/rGO-xnanostructured composites are found to be excellent materials for battery type supercapacitor (supercapattery) applications. Among these samples, the NiCo-LDH/rGO-30 composite gives maximum specific capacity of 829 C g^-1(1658 F g^-1) at a current density of 1 A g^-1and high rate capability. The as fabricated 2-electrode symmetric Swagelok deviceNiCo-LDH/rGO-30NiCo-LDH/rGO-30delivered a high energy density of 49.2 Wh kg^-1and a power density of 4511 W kg^-1, and enabled us to glow red, blue and white LED bulbs using three coin cells. The device can show good capacity retention even after 3000 continuous charge-discharge cycles. The NiCo-LDH/rGO-30 composite,in situderived from ZIF-67 MOF in combination with optimal amount of rGO, is an excellent material to deliver both high energy density and high power density in supercapattery devices.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) composites as promising materials for energy storage applications

Metal-organic framework (MOF) composites are considered to be one of the most vital energy storage materials due to their advantages of high porousness, multifunction, various structures and controllable chemical compositions, which provide a great possibility to find suitable electrode materials for batteries and supercapacitors. However, MOF composites are still in the face of various challenges and difficulties that hinder their practical application. In this review, we introduce and summarize the applications of MOF composites in batteries, covering metal-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-oxygen batteries and zinc-air batteries, as well as supercapacitors. In addition, the application challenges of MOF composites in batteries and supercapacitors are also summarized. Finally, the basic ideas and directions for further development of these two types of electrochemical energy storage devices are proposed.

Construction of a Cu-Based Metal-Organic Framework by Employing a Mixed-Ligand Strategy and Its Facile Conversion into Nanofibrous CuO for Electrochemical Energy Storage Applications

Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely employed as a sacrificial template for the construction of nanostructured materials for a range of applications including energy storage. Herein, we report a facile mixed-ligand strategy for the synthesis of a Cu-MOF, [Cu₃(Azopy)₃(BTTC)₃(H₂O)₃·2H₂O]_n (where BTTC = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid and Azopy = 4,4'-azopyridine), via a slow-diffusion method at room temperature. X-ray analysis authenticates the two-dimensional (2D)-layered framework of Cu-MOF. Topologically, this 2D-layered structure is assigned as a 4-connected unimodal net with sql topology. Further, nanostructured CuO is obtained via a simple precipitation method by employing Cu-MOF as a precursor. After analysis of their physicochemical properties through various techniques, both materials are used as surface modifiers of glassy carbon electrodes for a comparative electrochemical study. The results reveal a superior charge storage performance of CuO (244.2 F g^-1 at a current density of 0.8 A g^-1) with a high rate capability compared to Cu-MOF. This observation paves the pathway for the strategic design of high-performing supercapacitor electrode materials.

Recent advances in metal-organic framework-based electrode materials for supercapacitors

Exploring porous electrode materials with designed micro/nano-structures is an effective way to realize high-performance supercapacitors (SCs). A metal-organic framework (MOF) is a porous crystalline material with a periodic structure formed by coordination of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands. Due to the excellent properties (e.g., large specific surface area, high porosity and tailorable structure), MOFs have been widely used in diverse applications. This Frontier article highlights the recent progress in the synthesis of MOF-based micro/nano-structured electrode materials including pristine MOFs, MOF composites and MOF derivatives, and their application in SCs. Furthermore, the challenges of MOF-based electrode materials and possible solutions are also discussed.

Progress and Perspectives on Covalent-organic Frameworks (COFs) and Composites for Various Energy Applications

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), being a new member of the crystalline porous materials family, have emerged as important materials for energy storage/conversion/generation devices. They possess high surface areas, ordered micro/mesopores, designable structures and an ability to precisely control electro-active groups in their pores, which broaden their application window. Thanks to their low weight density, long range crystallinity, reticular nature and tunable synthesis approach towards two and three dimensional (2D and 3D) networks, they have been found suitable for a range of challenging electrochemical applications. Our review focuses on the progress made on the design, synthesis and structure of COFs and their composites for various energy applications, such as metal-ion batteries, supercapacitors, water-splitting and solar cells. Additionally, attempts have been made to correlate the structural and mechanistic characteristics of COFs with their applications.

A highly conductive Ni(OH)2 nano-sheet wrapped CuCo2S4 nano-tube electrode with a core-shell structure for high performance supercapacitors

The design of microstructures and the optimum selection of electrode materials have substantial effects on the electrochemical performances of supercapacitors. A core-shell structured CuCo2S4@Ni(OH)2 electrode material was designed, with CuCo2S4 nanotubes as the core wrapped by interlaced Ni(OH)2 nano-sheets as the shell. The hydrothermal and electro-deposition processes were adopted to synthesize CuCo2S4@Ni(OH)2 materials. The CuCo2S4 nanotubes can both provide specific capacitance and act as a "superhighway" for electrons due to their highly conductive skeleton structure. The Ni(OH)2 nano-sheets will boost the electrochemically active sites and enhance the specific surface area. Meanwhile, the mutually restricted core-shell CuCo2S4@Ni(OH)2 electrode could regulate the volume deformation to improve its stability. The CuCo2S4@Ni(OH)2 electrode had a maximum specific capacitance of 2668.4 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and a superior cycling stability of 90.3% after 10 000 cycles. Moreover, a CuCo2S4@Ni(OH)2//active carbon asymmetric supercapacitor with a maximum energy density of 44 W h kg-1 was assembled, suggesting that CuCo2S4@Ni(OH)2 is a successful binder-free electrode material for high performance supercapacitors.

Bent-bis(triazolyl)-based coordination polymers tuned by dicarboxylate ligands: syntheses, structures and properties

Seven new coordination polymers based on the bent 1,1'-(oxybis(1,4-phenylene))-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazole) ligand, with diverse structures and novel topologies, that are directed by the dicarboxylate ligands.

Auxiliary ligand-modulated trisimidazole-based coordination polymers: syntheses, structures and photoluminescence properties

Five coordination polymers having 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene and the varied O-donor auxiliary ligands were designed and synthesized. Further, the auxiliary ligands modulated these complexes with structural diversities and novel topologies.

The Application of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives for Supercapacitors

Supercapacitors (SCs), one of the most popular types of energy-storage devices, present lots of advantages, such as large power density and fast charge/discharge capability. Being the promising SCs electrode materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have gained ever-increasing attention due to their large specific surface area, controllable porous structure and rich diversity. Herein, the recent development of MOFs-based materials and their application in SCs as the electrode are reviewed and summarized. The preparation method, the morphology of the materials and the electrical performance of various MOFs and their derivatives (such as carbon, metal oxide/hydroxide and metal sulfide) are briefly discussed. Most of recent works concentrate on Ni-, Co- and Mn-MOFs and their composites/derivatives. Conclusions and our outlook for the researches are also given, which would be a valuable guideline for the rational design of MOFs materials for SCs in the near future.
