Similarities and differences between Mn(II) and Zn(II) coordination polymers supported by porphyrin-based ligands: synthesis, structures and nonlinear optical properties

A Porphyrin-Based 3D Metal-Organic Framework Featuring [Cu8Cl6]10+ Cluster Secondary Building Units: Synthesis, Structure Elucidation, Anion Exchange, and Peroxidase-Like Activity

Herein, we report a rare example of cationic three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic framework (MOF) of [Cu5Cl3(TMPP)]Cl5 ⋅ xSol (denoted as Cu-TMPP; H2TMPP=meso-tetrakis (6-methylpyridin-3-yl) porphyrin; xSol=encapsulated solvates) supported by [Cu8Cl6]10+ cluster secondary building units (SBUs) wherein the eight faces of the Cl--based octahedron are capped by eight Cu2+. Surface-area analysis indicated that Cu-TMPP features a mesoporous structure and its solvate-like Cl- counterions can be exchanged by BF4 -, PF6 -, and NO3 -. The polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated Cu-TMPP (denoted as Cu-TMPP-PVP) demonstrated good ROS generating ability, producing ⋅OH in the absence of light (peroxidase-like activity) and 1O2 on light irradiation (650 nm; 25 mW cm-2). This work highlights the potential of Cu-TMPP as a functional carrier of anionic guests such as drugs, for the combination therapy of cancer and other diseases.

A metal-organic framework complex for enhancing tumor treatments through synergistic effect of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy

Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (PMOFs) are a kind of crystal hybrid material with broad application prospects in energy, catalysis, biomedicine, and other fields. In this study, the La-TCPP PMOF nanocrystal was constructed using a porphyrin ligand and La ion. This material can produce a high loading rate on doxorubicin (DOX) owing to its special porous structure. The high loading rate of drug molecules and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) of the porphyrin ligand enable La-TCPP@DOX nanocrystal to produce a powerful killing effect on cancer cells under the synergistic attack of chemotherapy (CT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Finally, by modifying the targeted aptamer, the actual therapeutic effect of this special La-TCPP@DOX@Apt material on tumors was confirmed by applying the established mouse tumor model. The composite nanomaterial not only avoids the side effects caused by high concentrations of chemotherapeutic drugs, but also overcomes the limitation of PDT owing to insufficient light penetration and can inhibit and kill solid tumors under the condition of synergistic attack. This study is a complement to PMOF crystal materials, and its tumor-killing ability was achieved by loading drugs and introducing targeting molecules, which proves that the synergistic attack can more effectively inhibit and treat solid tumors. These studies have a reference and guiding significance for the treatment of cancer patients.

Nanoscale Two-Dimensional FeII- and CoII-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks of Porphyrin Ligand for the Photodynamic Therapy of Breast Cancer

The delivery of biocompatible reagents into cancer cells can elicit an anticancer effect by taking advantage of the unique characteristics of the tumor microenvironment (TME). In this work, we report that nanoscale two-dimensional Fe^II- and Co^II-based metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) of porphyrin ligand meso-tetrakis (6-(hydroxymethyl) pyridin-3-yl) porphyrin (THPP) can catalyze the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and O₂ in the presence of H₂O₂ that is overexpressed in the TME. Photodynamic therapy consumes the generated O₂ to produce a singlet oxygen (¹O₂). Both •OH and ¹O₂ are reactive oxygen species (ROS) that inhibit cancer cell proliferation. The Fe^II- and Co^II-based NMOFs were non-toxic in the dark but cytotoxic when irradiated with 660 nm light. This preliminary work points to the potential of porphyrin-based ligands of transition metals as anticancer drugs by synergizing different therapeutic modalities.

Distinct nonlinear optical responses in three pairs of 2D homochiral Ag(i) enantiomers modulated by dicarboxylic acid ligands

Based on three pairs of 2D homochiral Ag(i) enantiomers, we demonstrate that both the symmetry and degree of π-conjugation of the ligands have a significant effect on the type and intensity of their NLO responses.

Oriented Assembly of 2D Metal-Pyridylporphyrinic Framework Films for Giant Nonlinear Optical Limiting

The development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is of pronounced significance for optical devices. Herein, a series of 2D MOFs ZnTPyP(M) (TPyP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, M = Cu, Ni, Mn, H₂) films with [010]-orientation growth composed of ultrathin nanosheets from a pyridylporphyrinic ligand are first obtained by using a liquid-phase epitaxial (LPE) layer-by-layer (lbl) growth approach. ZnTPyP(M) films show a giant nonlinear optical limiting (OL) response and can be modulated by tuning the type of metalloporphyrinic ligands. As a result, ZnTPyP(Cu) film exhibits the highest nonlinear absorption coefficient of 5.7 × 10^-6 m/W compared to other reported NLO materials. Density functional theory calculations were consistent with the experimental results, revealing that the tunable π-π* local excitation and the increased delocalization of the metalloporphyrinic group regulate the NLO performance of ZnTPyP(M) films. These findings provide new insight into the effect of 2D porphyrinic MOFs toward the NLO response and offer new film candidates for nonlinear OL application.

Interpenetrated Metal-Porphyrinic Framework for Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Limiting

Structural interpenetration in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) significantly impacts on their properties and functionalities. However, understanding the interpenetration on third-order nonlinear optics (NLO) of MOFs have not been reported to date. Herein, we report two 3D porphyrinic MOFs, a 2-fold interpenetrated [Zn₂(TPyP)(AC)₂] (ZnTPyP-1) and a noninterpenetrated [Zn₃(TPyP)(H₂O)₂(C₂O₄)₂] (ZnTPyP-2), constructed from 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (TPyP(H₂)) and Zn(NO₃)₂ (AC = acetate, C₂O₄ = oxalate). ZnTPyP-1 achieves excellent optical limiting (OL) performance with a giant nonlinear absorption coefficient (3.61 × 10⁶ cm/GW) and large third-order susceptibility (7.73 × 10^-7 esu), which is much better than ZnTPyP-2 and other reported OL materials. The corresponding MOFs nanosheets are dispersed into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to form highly transparent and flexible MOFs/PDMS glasses for practical OL application. In addition, the OL response optimized by adjusting the MOFs concentration in the PDMS matrix and the type of metalloporphyrin are discussed in the ZnTPyP-1 system. The theoretical calculation confirmed that the abundant π-π interaction from porphyrinic groups in the interpenetrated framework increased the electron delocalization/transfer and boosted the OL performance. This study opens a new avenue to enhance OL performance by the construction of interpenetrated structures and provides a new approach for the preparation of transparent and flexible MOF composites in nonlinear optical applications.

Metal-organic frameworks of linear trinuclear cluster secondary building units: structures and applications

Secondary building units (SBUs) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are essential from both a structural and performance perspective. While a variety of SBUs, such as paddlewheel CuII2, triangular CrIII3, tetrahedral ZnII4, and octahedral ZrIV6 have been extensively studied, the linear trinuclear SBUs (herein denoted as M₃), though frequently encountered, are rarely discussed as a class. A literature survey reveals that M₃ clusters are ubiquitous in discrete molecular entities as well as in MOFs. Unlike most other cluster types, however, they have an unprecedented metal diversity and ligand tolerance. The single-crystals of some M₃-based MOFs are also sufficiently robust upon guest removal and exchange or multi-step post-modifications to enable catalytic mechanism elucidation. Some of these M₃-based SBUs endow MOFs with stability under demanding conditions necessary, for example, in flue gas separation. Herein we review MOFs sustained by this common but under-appreciated class of SBUs and discuss applications of the resulting MOF motifs.

Heterobimetallic Cluster-Based Coordination Polymers: Assembly, Structures and Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties

Reactions of (NH₄ )₂ WS₄ with CuCN, CuCN/1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bppa) or [Cu(MeCN)₄ ]PF₆ /bppa under different reaction conditions afforded a set of two- or three-dimensional W/Cu/S cluster-based coordination polymers including {[Et₄ N]₂ [WS₄ Cu₄ (μ-CN)₂ (μ-I)₂ ]}_n (1), [WS₄ Cu₄ (μ-CN)₂ (bppa)₂ ]_n (2) and {[WS₄ Cu₄ (bppa)₄ ](PF₆ )₂ }_n (3), respectively. Compound 2 can be readily formed from reaction of 1 with bppa under solvothermal conditions. Compounds 1 and 2 feature two-dimensional networks with a "sql" topology, while 3 possesses a two-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional net with a rare "reo" topology. Compounds 1-3 in DMF exhibited different third-order nonlinear optical responses, and they all showed a reverse saturable absorption while 2 held a strong self-focusing effect.

Crystal Structure and Catalytic Activity of Poly[bis(3-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde)-2-aminopyrimidinemagnesium(II)] for Hydrogenation of 1,3-Butadiene

A new six-coordinated Mn(II) coordination polymer, [Mn(L1)(L2)2]n (L1 = 2-aminopyrimidine, HL2 = 3-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde) was synthesized by 3-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, NaOH, 2-aminopyrimidine and manganese(II) acetate dihydrate. The Mn(II) coordination polymer was structural characterized by elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The results show that each Mn(II) ion is six-coordinated with two phenolic hydroxyl O atoms from two 3-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde ligands (O1 and O4), two formyl group O atoms from two 3-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde ligands (O2 and O3), and two N atoms from two 2-aminopyrimidine molecules (N1A and N2), and forms a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. The Mn(II) coordination polymer displays a 1D chained structure by the bridge effect of 2-aminopyrimidine N atoms. The catalytic activities of Mn(II) coordination polymer and Pd@Mn(II) coordination polymer for hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene have been investigated. The Pd@Mn(II) coordination polymer catalyst shows the good catalytic activity and selectivity in  the hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. The 1,3-butadiene conversion is 61.3% at 70 °C, and the selectivity to total butene is close to 100%. Copyright © 2021 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group.
