Macrocycle supported dimetallic lanthanide complexes with slow magnetic relaxation in Dy2 analogues

Structures and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior of Dy3 and Dy4 Clusters Constructed by Different Dysprosium(III) Salts

Using the Schiff base ligand H2L-pyra (N'-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazonamide) with multiple dentate sites, the trinuclear DyIII-based complex [Dy3(HL-pyra)2(L-pyra)2(CH3COO)3]·2H2O (1) was synthesized. By analyzing the fragmented assembly process and fine-tuning the bridging anions, complex [Dy4(HL-pyra)2(L-pyra)4(NO3)2(H2O)2]·8H2O (2) with different nuclear numbers was successfully synthesized. Magnetic studies demonstrated that 1 did not exhibit magnetic relaxation behavior under the external field; however, 2 exhibited zero-field single-molecule magnetic relaxation behavior with an effective energy barrier (Ueff) of 197.44 K. This is attributed to the improved anisotropy of the single ion after the normalization of the crystal structure, thus realizing the molecular magnetic switching. Moreover, magnetic dilution analysis of 2 demonstrated that the weak magnetic interaction between metal ions inhibited the occurrence of quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), resulting in high-performance single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. The reasons for the magnetic difference between these two complexes were analyzed using ab initio calculation and magneto-structural correlations. This study provides a reasonable prediction of the ideal configuration of the approximately parallelogram DyIII-based SMMs, thus offering an effective approach for synthesizing Dy4 complexes with excellent properties.

The effect of co-ligands on the performance of single-molecule magnet behaviours in a family of linear trinuclear Zn-Dy-Zn complexes with a compartmental Schiff base

We present herein magneto-structural studies of three heterometallic Zn2Dy complexes: [Zn2Dy(L)2Cl2(H2O)](ClO4)·4H2O (1), [Zn2Dy(L)2Br2(H2O)](ClO4)·4H2O (2) and [Zn2Dy(L)2(OAc)I(H2O)]I3·4H2O (3), utilizing a new Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(3-methoxy-5-methylsalicylidene)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (H2L). Complexes 1 and 2 exhibit remarkable magnetic relaxation behaviour with relatively high energy barriers in zero field (Ueff: 244 K for 1 and 211 K for 2) and notable hysteresis temperatures, despite the low local geometric symmetry around the central DyIII ions. The SMM performance of these complexes is further enhanced under an applied magnetic field, with Ueff increasing to 309 K for 1 and 269 K for 2, positioning them as elite members within the Zn-Dy SMM family. These findings emphasize the substantial influence of remote modulation on ZnII beyond the first coordination sphere of DyIII ions on their dynamic magnetic relaxation properties. Ab initio studies demonstrate that the relative orientation of the phenoxo-oxygen donor atoms around the DyIII ion is critical for determining the magnetic anisotropy and relaxation dynamics in these systems. Additionally, experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the coordination of the bridging acetate towards the hard plane, combined with significant distortion from the ideal ZnO2Dy diamond core arrangement caused by the acetate ion, results in low magnetic anisotropy in complex 3, thereby leading to field-induced SMM behaviour. Overall, this study unveils the effects of co-ligands on the SMM performance in a series of linear trinuclear Zn-Dy-Zn complexes, which exhibit low local geometric symmetry around the DyIII centres.

Insight into ferromagnetic interactions in CuII-LnIII dimers with a compartmental ligand

In the last two decades, efforts have been devoted to obtaining insight into the magnetic interactions between CuII and LnIII utilizing experimental and theoretical means. Experimentally, it has been observed that the exchange coupling (J) in CuII-LnIII systems is often found to be ferromagnetic for ≥4f7 metal ions. However, exchange interactions at sub-Kelvin temperatures between CuII and the anisotropic/isotropic LnIII ions are not often explored. In this report, we have synthesized a series of heterobimetallic [CuLn(HL)(μ-piv)(piv)2] complexes (LnIII = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3) and Er (4)) from a new compartmental Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(3-methoxy-5-methylsalicylidene)-1,3-diamino-2-propanol (H3L). X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that all four complexes are isostructural and isomorphous. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a ferromagnetic coupling between the CuII ion and its respective LnIII ion for all the complexes, as often observed. Moreover, μ-SQUID studies, at sub-Kelvin temperatures, show S-shaped hysteresis loops indicating the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling in complexes 1-3. The antiferromagnetic interaction is explained by considering the shortest Cu⋯Cu distance in the crystal structure. The nearly closed loops for 1-3 highlight their fast relaxation characteristics, while the opened loops for 4 might arise from intermolecular ordering. CASSCF calculations allow the quantitative assessment of the interactions, which are further supported by BS-DFT calculations.

Lanthanide Single-molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structures, Properties and Recent Advances

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (U_eff ) and pre-exponential factor (τ₀ ) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high-performance Ln SMMs.

Combined experimental and theoretical studies on a series of mononuclear LnIII single-molecule magnets: dramatic influence of remote substitution on the magnetic dynamics in Dy analogues

A series of Ln^III complexes of general formula [Ln(H₂L¹)₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)](NO₃) (1-5) [Ln = Dy (1), Tb (2) Ho (3), Er (4), and Yb (5)] and an analogous Dy^III complex with ligand H₂L², [Dy(H₂L²)₂(NO₃)₃(H₂O)](NO₃) (6), where H₂L¹ and H₂L² stand for (E)-2-[(2-hydroxyphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol and (E)-2-[(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol, respectively, have been synthesized and magneto-structurally characterized. All these complexes are isostructural and isomorphous, in which the zwitterionic form of the ligands predominantly coordinate the metal centers. The magnetic study revealed that complex 3 displays negligible SMM behaviour, while 1 and 6 are zero field SMMs, the performance of which can largely be improved in the presence of an applied dc field by lowering under barrier relaxation processes, and finally 2, 4, and 5 are field-induced SMMs. The most remarkable observation in the present study is the dramatically-enhanced SMM performance in 6 compared to 1, achieved by only a remote methyl substitution at the ligand framework to increase the intermolecular separation. Although SINGLE_ANISO ab initio calculations for 1 and 6 are very similar, the POLY_ANISO module revealed weak dipolar interactions in both the compounds but significant antiferromagnetic interaction in 1, thereby justifying the experimental fact. The present work discloses that even a small substitution such as a methyl group can adequately increase the intermolecular separation, leading to several-fold enhanced effective energy barrier.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of acetate-bridged lanthanide complexes based on a tripodal oxygen ligand

Four homodinuclear lanthanide complexes, Dy2 (LOEt)2(OAc)4 (1), Tb2 (LOEt)2(OAc)4 (2), Ho2(LOEt)2(OAc)4 (3), and Gd2 (LOEt)2(OAc)4 (4), have been synthesized and characterized based on a tripodal oxygen ligand Na [(η5-C5H5)Co(P(O)(OC2H5)2)3] (NaLOEt). Structural analyses show that the acetate anions bridge two symmetry-related Ln3+ ions in the μ2:η1:η1 and μ2:η1:η2 coordination patterns, and each lanthanide (III) ion owns a twisted square antiprism (SAPR) conformation. Static magnetic measurements reveal the weak intramolecular ferromagnetic interaction between dysprosium (III) ions in 1 and antiferromagnetic Ln3+···Ln3+ couplings in the other three complexes. Through the analysis of the ligand-field effect and magnetic anisotropy axis orientation, the reasons for the lack of dynamic magnetic behavior in 1 were identified.

Macrocycle based dinuclear dysprosium(III) single molecule magnets with local D5h coordination geometry

Targeted approaches for manipulating the coordination geometry of lanthanide ions are a promising way to synthesize high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs), but most of the successful examples reported to date focus on mononuclear complexes. Herein, we describe a strategy to assemble dinuclear SMMs with Dy^III ions in approximate D_5h coordination geometry based on pyrazolate-based macrocyclic ligands with two binding sites. A Dy4 complex with a rhomb-like arrangement of four Dy^III as well as two dinuclear complexes having axial chlorido ligands (Dy2·Cl and Dy2*·Cl) were obtained; in the latter case, substituting Cl^- by SCN^- gave Dy2·SCN. Magneto-structural studies revealed that the μ-OH bridges with short Dy-O bonds dominate the magnetic anisotropy of the Dy^III ions in centrosymmetric Dy4 to give a vortex type diamagnetic ground state. Dynamic magnetic studies of Dy4 identified two relaxation processes under zero field, one of which is suppressed after applying a dc field. For complexes Dy2·Cl and Dy2*·Cl, the Dy^III ions feature almost perfect D_5h environment, but both complexes only behave as field-induced SMMs (U_eff = 19 and 25 K) due to the weak axial Cl^- donors. In Dy2·SCN additional MeOH coordination leads to a distorted D_2d geometry of the Dy^III ions, yet SMMs properties at zero field are observed due to the relatively strong axial ligand field provided by SCN^- (U_eff = 43 K). Further elaboration of preorganizing macrocyclic ligands appears to be a promising strategy for imposing a desired coordination geometry with parallel orientation of the anisotropy axes of proximate Dy^III ions in a targeted approach.

Successive syntheses and magnetic properties of homodinuclear lanthanide macrocyclic complexes

A series of homodinuclear β-diketone lanthanide(III) complexes, formulated as [(acac)₄Ln₂(L1)] (Ln³⁺ = Dy³⁺ (1), Tb³⁺ (2), and Gd³⁺ (3), respectively) were first synthesized based on a closed-macrocyclic ligand (H₂L1) derived from the [2 + 2] cyclocondensation of 4-tert-butyl-2,6-diformylphenol and o-phenylenediamine in the presence of lanthanide acetylacetonates. Subsequently, by using the above compounds as building blocks to assemble directly with another Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(5-chlorosalicylidene)-o-phenylenediamine (H₂L2), three new homodinuclear sandwich-type lanthanide complexes with the general formula [Ln₂(L1)(L2)₂] (Ln³⁺ = Dy³⁺ (4), Tb³⁺ (5), and Gd³⁺ (6), respectively) were further designed and prepared. Single-crystal X-ray analyses show that the central Ln³⁺ ion adopts a distorted square antiprism conformation with D_4d local symmetry. Magnetic studies reveal ferromagnetic interaction between Dy³⁺ and Tb³⁺ centres and zero-field slow relaxation of magnetization for Dy complexes 1 and 4. The corresponding magneto-structural correlations of SMMs 1 and 4 were further discussed by theoretical calculations and with experimental outcomes.

Low-Coordinate Dinuclear Dysprosium(III) Single Molecule Magnets Utilizing LiCl as Bridging Moieties and Tris(amido)amine as Blocking Ligands

A low-coordinate dinuclear dysprosium complex {[Dy(N3N)(THF)][LiCl(THF)]}2 (Dy2) with a double bridging ‘LiCl’ moiety and tris(amido)amine (N3N)3− anions as a blocking ligand is synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Thanks to the use of the chelating blocking ligand (N3N)3− equipped with large steric –SiMe3 groups, the coordination sphere of both DyIII ions is restricted to only six donor atoms. The three amido nitrogen atoms determine the orientation of the easy magnetization axes of both DyIII centers. Consequently, Dy2 shows slow magnetic relaxation typical for single molecule magnets (SMMs). However, the effective energy barrier for magnetization reversal determined from the AC magnetic susceptibility measurements is much lower than the separation between the ground and the first excited Kramers doublet based on the CASSCF ab initio calculations. In order to better understand the possible influence of the anticipated intramolecular magnetic interactions in this dinuclear molecule, its GdIII-analog {[Gd(N3N)(THF)][LiCl(THF)]}2 (Gd2) is also synthesized and studied magnetically. Detailed magnetic measurements reveal very weak antiferromagnetic interactions in Gd2. This in turn suggests similar antiferromagnetic interactions in Dy2, which might be responsible for its peculiar SMM behavior and the absence of the magnetic hysteresis loop.
