Raman study of pressure-induced phase transitions in imidazolium manganese- hypophosphite hybrid perovskite

By using Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrate that [IM]Mn(H₂POO)₃ is a highly compressible material that undergoes three pressure-induced phase transitions. Using a diamond anvil cell we performed high-pressure experiments up to 7.1 GPa, using paraffin oil as the compression medium. The first phase transition, which occurs near 2.9 GPa, leads to very pronounced changes in the Raman spectra. This behavior indicates that this transition is associated with very large reconstruction of the inorganic framework and collapse of the perovskite cages. The second phase transition, which occurs near 4.9 GPa, is associated with subtle structural changes. The last transition takes place near 5.9 GPa and it leads to further significant distortion of the anionic framework. In contrast to the anionic framework, the phase transitions have weak impact on the imidazolium cation. Pressure dependence of Raman modes proves that compressibility of the high-pressure phases is significantly lower compared to the ambient pressure phase. It also indicates that the contraction of the MnO₆ octahedra prevails over that of the imidazolium cations and hypophosphite linkers. However, compressibility of MnO₆ strongly decreases in the highest pressure phase. Pressure-induced phase transitions are reversible.

Zero-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid manganese bromide with coexistence of dielectric-thermal double switches and efficient photoluminescence

Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides have attracted much attention due to their rich composition, excellent optical stability, large exciton binding energy, etc. Photoelectric switchable multifunctional materials can integrate multiple physical properties (e.g., ferroelectricity, photoluminescence, magnetic, etc.) into one device and are widely used in many fields such as smart switches, sensors, etc. However, multifunctional materials with thermal energy storage, stimulant dielectric response, and light-emitting properties are rarely reported. Here, we synthesized a new organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide single crystal [TEMA]2MnBr4 (1) (TEMA+ = triethylmethylammonium). Compound 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition at a high temperature of 344/316 K, having a large thermal hysteresis of 28 K and exhibits high stability dielectric switching characteristics near the phase transition temperature. The single crystal exhibits green emission at 513 nm under UV excitation, originating from the 4T1g(G) → 6A1g(S) transition of Mn2+ ions. Excitingly, this single crystal's photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is as high as 80.78%. This work provides a strategy for the development of organic-inorganic hybrid optoelectronic multifunctional materials with high-efficient light emission and switchable dielectric properties.

Halogen engineering of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites displaying nonlinear optical, fluorescence properties and phase transition

In order to meet the needs of social development, increasing research attention has been paid to multifunctional molecular-based phase-transition materials. The traditional phase-transition materials with a single functional property can be transformed into magnificent ones by adding additional functional properties-for instance photoluminescence and magnetic order- because having two or more functional properties simultaneously greatly broadens the fields of their applications. At present, there are very few multifunctional phase-transition materials showing excellent performance, and the crystal structure design and performance optimization of materials still need to be studied in depth. Herein, we report the development of two organic-inorganic hybrid materials: (MBA)₂ZnI₄ (1, MBA = 4-methoxybenzylammonium) with switchable dielectricity and a high phase-transition temperature (T_c = 359.55 K), and (MBA)₂ZnBr₄ (2) with green luminescence (λ_exc = 314 nm) and nonlinear optical properties (0.75× KDP). A two-dimensional (2D) fingerprint analysis of the Hirshfeld surface plots revealed a significant difference between the hydrogen-bonding interaction before the phase transition and that afterwards. The two compounds were further verified, from energy band structure calculations, to be direct-band-gap semiconductors. In conclusion, this work has provided a viable strategy, involving the application of chemical modifications, for designing various functional materials.

Hybrid Chlorides with Methylhydrazinium Cation: [CH3NH2NH2]CdCl3 and Jahn-Teller Distorted [CH3NH2NH2]CuCl3

The synthesis, structural, phonon, optical, and magnetic properties of two hybrid organic-inorganic chlorides with monoprotonated methylhydrazinium cations (CH₃NH₂NH₂⁺, MHy⁺), [CH₃NH₂NH₂]CdCl₃ (MHyCdCl₃), and [CH₃NH₂NH₂]CuCl₃ (MHyCuCl₃), are reported. In contrast to previously reported MHyM^IICl₃ (M^II = Mn²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Co²⁺) analogues, neither compound undergoes phase transitions. The MHyCuCl₃ has a crystal structure familiar to previous crystals composed of edge-shared 1D chains of the [CuCl₅N] octahedra. MHyCuCl₃ crystallizes in monoclinic P2₁/c symmetry with MHy⁺ cations directly linked to the Cu²⁺ ions. The MHyCdCl₃ analogue crystallizes in lower triclinic symmetry with zig-zag chains of the edge-shared [CdCl₆] octahedra. The absence of phase transitions is investigated and discussed. It is connected with slightly stronger hydrogen bonding between cations and the copper-chloride chains in MHyCuCl₃ due to the strong Jahn-Teller effect causing the octahedra to elongate, resulting in a better fit of cations in the accessible space between chains. The absence of structural transformation in MHyCdCl₃ is due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding between two neighboring MHy⁺ cations, which has never been reported for MHy⁺-based hybrid halides. Optical investigations revealed that the bandgaps in Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ analogues are 2.62 and 5.57 eV, respectively. Magnetic tests indicated that MHyCuCl₃ has smeared antiferromagnetic ordering at 4.8 K.

Luminescence and Dielectric Switchable Properties of a 1D (1,1,1-Trimethylhydrazinium)PbI3 Hybrid Perovskitoid

The synthesis and investigation of the physicochemical properties of a novel one-dimensional (1D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskitoid templated by the 1,1,1-trimethylhydrazinium (Me₃Hy⁺) cation are reported. (Me₃Hy)[PbI₃] crystallizes in the hexagonal P6₃/m symmetry and undergoes two phase transitions (PTs) during heating (cooling) at 322 (320) and 207 (202) K. X-ray diffraction data and temperature-dependent vibrational studies show that the second-order PT to the high-temperature hexagonal P6₃/mmc phase is associated with a weak change in entropy and is related to weak structural changes and different confinement of cations in the available space. The second PT to the low-temperature orthorhombic Pbca phase that corresponds to the high change in entropy and dielectric switching is associated with an ordering of the trimethylhydrazinium cations, re-arrangement and strengthening of hydrogen bonds, and slightly shifted lead-iodide octahedral chains. The high-pressure Raman data revealed two additional PTs, one between 2.8 and 3.2 GPa, related to the symmetry decrease, ordering of the cations, and inorganic chain distortion, and the other in the 6.4-6.8 GPa range related to the partial and reversible amorphization. Optical studies revealed that (Me₃Hy)[PbI₃] has a wide band gap (3.20 eV) and emits reddish-orange excitonic emission at low temperatures with an activation energy of 65 meV.

Effect of Organic Cation on Optical Properties of [A]Mn(H2POO)3 Hybrid Perovskites

Hybrid organic-inorganic compounds crystallizing in a three-dimensional (3D) perovskite-type architecture have attracted considerable attention due to their multifunctional properties. One of the most intriguing groups is perovskites with hypophosphite linkers. Herein, the optical properties of six hybrid hypophosphite perovskites containing manganese ions are presented. The band gaps of these compounds, as well as the luminescence properties of the octahedrally coordinated Mn2+ ions associated with the 4T1g(G) → 6A1g(S) transition are shown to be dependent on the organic cation type and Goldschmidt tolerance factor. Thus, a correlation between essential structural features of Mn-based hybrid hypophosphites and their optical properties was observed. Additionally, the broad infrared luminescence of the studied compounds was examined for potential application in an indoor lighting system for plant growth.

A series of dynamic single crystals of [MII(en)3]SO4 (M = Ni, Mn, and Cd) shows tunable dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion

A series of dynamic single crystals with a chemical formula of [M^II(en)₃]SO₄ (en = ethylene and M^II = Ni^II, Mn^II, and Cd^II) was synthesized. As the temperature decreases, these materials exhibit dielectric switching in the vicinity of the phase transition point accompanied by anisotropic thermal expansion in the cell parameters as a consequence of the order-disorder structural change of SO2-4 in a cavity surrounded by five [M^II(en)₃]²⁺ complex cations. Because the variation of metal centers with different ionic radii changes the shape of the complex cation, which affects the distribution of hydrogen-bond interactions around the SO2-4, the dynamic motion of SO2-4 is substantially tuned. Correspondingly, the dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion of materials were largely shifted, especially in the single crystals of [Mn^II(en)₃]SO₄, whose structural change is distinctly different from the crystals of Ni(II) and Cd(II). The detailed structural mechanism accounting for the different physical properties of these materials was discussed.

Thermochromism Perovskite (COOH(CH2)3NH3)2PbI4 Crystals: Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Phase Transition and Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Emission

As a potential multifunctional phase transition material, the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Here, we report the single-crystal to single-crystal phase transition and excitation-wavelength-dependent emission (EDE) of layered perovskite (COOH(CH₂)₃NH₃)₂PbI₄. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that the crystal structure changes from layered Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) at 302 K to "X" network composed of face-sharing and corner-sharing [PbX₆]^4- octahedra at 425 K. The material exhibits thermochromic change from orange to yellow at higher temperature. Considering the thermochromism of the material, we apply it for anticounterfeiting and information encryption. The material exhibits EDE properties with a fluorescence color changing from green to red upon 420 and 546 nm excitation, respectively. Time-dependent density functional theory indicated that this phenomenon is mainly related to the laser-induced crystal structural transfer. Our research shows that the (COOH(CH₂)₃NH₃)₂PbI₄ crystal has a potential application for multifunctional devices.

Near-Infrared Phosphorescent Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskite with High-Contrast Dielectric and Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Switching Functionalities

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites providing integrated functionalities for multimodal switching applications are widely sought-after materials for optoelectronics. Here, we embark on a study of a novel pyrrolidinium-based cyanide perovskite of formula (C4H10N)2KCr(CN)6, which displays thermally driven bimodal switching characteristics associated with an order-disorder phase transition. Dielectric switching combines two features important from an application standpoint: high permittivity contrast (Δε' = 38.5) and very low dielectric losses. Third-order nonlinear optical switching takes advantage of third-harmonic generation (THG) bistability, thus far unprecedented for perovskites and coordination polymers. Structurally, (C4H10N)2KCr(CN)6 stands out as the first example of a three-dimensional stable perovskite among formate-, azide-, and cyanide-based metal-organic frameworks comprising large pyrrolidinium cations. Its stability, reflected also in robust switching characteristics, has been tracked down to the Cr3+ component, the ionic radius of which provides a large enough metal-cyanide cage for the pyrrolidinium cargo. While the presence of polar pyrrolidinium cations leads to excellent switchable dielectric properties, the presence of Cr3+ is also responsible for efficient phosphorescence, which is remarkably shifted to the near-infrared region (770 to 880 nm). The presence of Cr3+ was also found indispensable to the THG switching functionality. It is also found that a closely related cobalt-based analogue doped with Cr3+ ions displays distinct near-infrared phosphorescence as well. Thus, doping with Cr3+ ions is an effective strategy to introduce phosphorescence as an additional functional property into the family of cobalt-cyanide thermally switchable dielectrics.

The cation-dependent structural, magnetic and optical properties of a family of hypophosphite hybrid perovskites

Hypophosphite hybrid perovskites have recently received widespread attention due to their diverse structural and magnetic properties, negative thermal expansion and photoluminescence behaviour. Herein, we report two new three-dimensional hybrid perovskites containing unusually large organic cations, pyrrolidinium and 2-hydroxyethylammonium. We report the crystal structures of these new manganese-hypophosphite frameworks and their magnetic and optical properties. We also report the magnetic and optical properties of two previously discovered analogues, dimethylammonium and imidazolium manganese hypophosphites. Both new compounds crystallize in a monoclinic structure, space group P2₁/n, with ordered organic cations at room temperature. Magnetic studies show that all studied compounds are examples of canted antiferromagnets but the weak ferromagnetic contribution and the ordering temperature are significantly modulated by the type of organic cation located in the cavity of the framework. We discuss the origin of this behaviour. Upon ultraviolet excitation, all compounds exhibit broadband photoluminescence associated with the ⁴T_1g(G) → ⁶A_1g(S) transition of octahedrally coordinated Mn²⁺ ions. The position of the PL band depends on the type of organic cation, being the most blue-shifted for the imidazolium analogue (646 nm) and the most red-shifted for the pyrrolidinium counterpart (689 nm). The most interesting property of the studied hypophosphites is, however, the strong temperature dependence of the photoluminescence intensity, suggesting the possible application of these compounds in non-contact optical thermometry.

Unique cation-template three-dimensional hybrid material demonstrates dielectric switchable response

The strict tolerance space of three-dimensional (3D) crystalline structures is still a significant challenge in the area of switching dielectrics in comparison with lower-dimensional structures. Generally, the function of crystalline materials can be given or adjusted by controlling the environment in which synthesis takes place or the packing rearrangement. Using this method, special functional enhancements or changes in the dielectrics can be realized by improving the synthetic strategies. Here, a 3D switchable dielectric compound [MeHdabco]K(BF4)3 was achieved by employing the temperature selective effect. In particular, its structure is completely different from the usual 3D perovskite structure, which is constructed using two different cation-template frameworks. Moreover, the 3D [MeHdabco]K(BF4)3 shows a structural phase transition at 358 K. The thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)) and X-ray diffractometry results provided evidence of these phase changes. This work provides a feasible strategy that can be used to achieve the different structures of an 'isomer', and enrich the method used for designing diverse functional materials.
