Introductory lecture: when the density of the noninteracting reference system is not the density of the physical system in density functional theory

DFT exchange: sharing perspectives on the workhorse of quantum chemistry and materials science

In this paper, the history, present status, and future of density-functional theory (DFT) is informally reviewed and discussed by 70 workers in the field, including molecular scientists, materials scientists, method developers and practitioners. The format of the paper is that of a roundtable discussion, in which the participants express and exchange views on DFT in the form of 302 individual contributions, formulated as responses to a preset list of 26 questions. Supported by a bibliography of 777 entries, the paper represents a broad snapshot of DFT, anno 2022.

Self-Consistent Implementation of Kohn-Sham Adiabatic Connection Models with Improved Treatment of the Strong-Interaction Limit

Adiabatic connection models (ACMs), which interpolate between the limits of weak and strong interaction, are powerful tools to build accurate exchange–correlation functionals. If the exact weak-interaction expansion from the second-order perturbation theory is included, a self-consistent implementation of these functionals is challenging and still absent in the literature. In this work, we fill this gap by presenting a fully self-consistent-field (SCF) implementation of some popular ACM functionals. While using second-order perturbation theory at weak interactions, we have also introduced new generalized gradient approximations (GGAs), beyond the usual point-charge-plus-continuum model, for the first two leading terms at strong interactions, which are crucial to ensure robustness and reliability. We then assess the SCF–ACM functionals for molecular systems and for prototypical strong-correlation problems. We find that they perform well for both the total energy and the electronic density and that the impact of SCF orbitals is directly connected to the accuracy of the ACM functional form. For the H₂ dissociation, the SCF–ACM functionals yield significant improvements with respect to standard functionals also thanks to the use of the new GGAs for the strong-coupling functionals.

Multireference Density Functional Theory for Describing Ground and Excited States with Renormalized Singles

We applied renormalized singles (RS) in the multireference density functional theory (DFT) to calculate accurate energies of ground and excited states. The multireference DFT approach determines the total energy of the N-electron system as the sum of the (N - 2)-electron energy from a density functional approximation (DFA) and the two-electron addition energies from the particle-particle Tamm-Dancoff approximation (ppTDA), naturally including multireference description. The ppTDA@RS-DFA approach uses the RS Hamiltonian capturing all singles contributions in calculating two-electron addition energies, and its total energy is optimized with the optimized effective potential method. It significantly improves the original ppTDA@DFA. For ground states, ppTDA@RS-DFA properly describes dissociation curves tested and the double bond rotation of ethylene. For excited states, ppTDA@RS-DFA provides accurate excitation energies and largely eliminates the DFA dependence. ppTDA@RS-DFA thus provides an efficient multireference approach to systems with static correlation.

Selfconsistent random phase approximation methods

This Perspective reviews recent efforts toward selfconsistent calculations of ground-state energies within the random phase approximation (RPA) in the (generalized) Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory context. Since the RPA correlation energy explicitly depends on the non-interacting KS potential, an additional condition to determine the energy as a functional of the density is necessary. This observation leads to the concept of functional selfconsistency (FSC), which requires that the KS density equals the interacting density defined as the functional derivative of the ground-state energy with respect to the external potential. While all existing selfconsistent RPA schemes violate FSC, the recent generalized KS semicanonical projected RPA (GKS-spRPA) method takes a step toward satisfying it. This leads to systematic improvements in densities, binding energy curves, reference state stability, and molecular properties compared to non-selfconsistent RPA as well as optimized effective potential RPA. GKS-spRPA orbital energies accurately approximate valence and core ionization potentials, and even electron affinities of non-valence bound anions. The computational cost and performance of GKS-spRPA are compared to those of related selfconsistent schemes, including GW and orbital optimization methods, and limitations are discussed. Large differences between KS and interacting densities observed in the absence of FSC and the well-rounded performance of GKS-spRPA suggest that the KS potential as a density functional should be defined via the FSC condition for explicitly potential-dependent density functionals.

Assessment of the performance of DFT functionals in the fulfillment of off-diagonal hypervirial relationships

Off-diagonal hypervirial relationships, combined with quantum mechanical sum rules of charge-current conservation, offer a way to test electronic excited-state transition energies and moments, which does not need any external reference. A number of fundamental relationships were recast into absolute deviations from zero, which have been used to assess the performance of some popular DFT functionals. Extended TD-DFT calculations have been carried out for a pool of molecules chosen for this purpose, adopting a large basis set to ensure high quality results. A partial agreement with previous benchmarks is observed.
