Recent advances in nanoantibiotics against multidrug-resistant bacteria

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria-caused infections have been a major threat to human health. The abuse of conventional antibiotics accelerates the generation of MDR bacteria and makes the situation worse. The emergence of nanomaterials holds great promise for solving this tricky problem due to their multiple antibacterial mechanisms, tunable antibacterial spectra, and low probabilities of inducing drug resistance. In this review, we summarize the mechanism of the generation of drug resistance, and introduce the recently developed nanomaterials for dealing with MDR bacteria via various antibacterial mechanisms. Considering that biosafety and mass production are the major bottlenecks hurdling the commercialization of nanoantibiotics, we introduce the related development in these two aspects. We discuss urgent challenges in this field and future perspectives to promote the development and translation of nanoantibiotics as alternatives against MDR pathogens to traditional antibiotics-based approaches.

Nanoparticle-mediated cancer cell therapy: basic science to clinical applications

Every sixth person in the world dies due to cancer, making it the second leading severe cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. According to WHO, cancer claimed nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. The most common types of cancers reported have been breast (lung, colon and rectum, prostate cases), skin (non-melanoma) and stomach. In addition to surgery, the most widely used traditional types of anti-cancer treatment are radio- and chemotherapy. However, these do not distinguish between normal and malignant cells. Additional treatment methods have evolved over time for early detection and targeted therapy of cancer. However, each method has its limitations and the associated treatment costs are quite high with adverse effects on the quality of life of patients. Use of individual atoms or a cluster of atoms (nanoparticles) can cause a paradigm shift by virtue of providing point of sight sensing and diagnosis of cancer. Nanoparticles (1-100 nm in size) are 1000 times smaller in size than the human cell and endowed with safer relocation capability to attack mechanically and chemically at a precise location which is one avenue that can be used to destroy cancer cells precisely. This review summarises the extant understanding and the work done in this area to pave the way for physicians to accelerate the use of hybrid mode of treatments by leveraging the use of various nanoparticles.

Fabrication and testing of a multifunctional SiO2@ZnO core-shell nanospheres incorporated polymer coating for sustainable marine transport

We report the development of a coating system relying on the incorporation of SiO₂@ZnO core-shell nanospheres in polyurethane media as a novel approach to achieve longevity and sustainability in marine transport. This polymeric coating showed significant improvement in surface abrasion resistance, the transition from a hydrophilic state to a hydrophobic state (~ 125.2° ± 2°), improved antifungal, antibacterial and antialgae effects which make the proposed coating ideal to protect steel surfaces against biofouling. To substantiate our claims, we performed X-ray diffraction, Transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning acoustic microscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), contact angle measurements, antimicrobial (antialgal, antibacterial, antifungal) tests and Taber abrasion tests (ASTM D1044 and D4060) to highlight the mechanical and biological functionality as well as the bonding configuration of this coating. The wear analysis of the Taber abraded coating using SEM and optical microscopy showed significant improvement in the adhesion and shear resistance achieved by the SiO₂@ZnO core-shell nanospheres incorporated PU coating which was a contrasting feature compared to using PU alone. The overall investigations we performed led us to find out that the addition of 4% (wt.) SiO₂@ZnO core-shell nanoparticles to the PU media deposited on the low carbon steel surface demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial performance with almost no bacterial growth, significant reductions in growth for algae to about 90% and fungus to about 95%.

New approaches for enhancing the photosensitivity, antibacterial activity, and controlled release behavior of non-porous silica-titania nanoplatforms

This research presents a new approach for the synthesis of inorganic nano-platforms containing >2 layers. Nano-platforms were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, etc. Since it has been reported that the maximum tolerable dose of non-porous silica nanoparticles (NPs) in in-vivo studies is higher than that of mesoporous silica, the non-porous silica was prepared. Curcumin (CUR) was trapped between the surfaces of the spherical non-porous silica and titania NPs (<100 nm) as both fluorescent and therapeutic agents, thus resulting in increased loading capacity of the non-porous silica NPs, as well as providing significant photosensitivity, antibacterial activity, and controlled release. In addition, the surface of NPs was enriched with Methyl violet-10B (MV-10B), and Rhodamine B (RhB). Silica@CUR@titania exhibited approximately 9-fold higher fluorescence intensity than silica@CUR NPs. This finding enabled us to design nano-platforms with minimum toxic effect due to low contents of RhB for bioimaging applications. The antimicrobial efficiency of nano-platforms was evaluated against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, S. typhimurium, K. pneumonia, S. epidermidis, S. aureus, B. subtilis, B. cereus, and E. faecalis. It was concluded that titania markedly lowered the minimum inhibitory concentration values (MICs) of CUR against all bacteria except B. subtilis and P. aeruginosa. Theoretical simulation was also performed to clarify the accumulation of functionalized NPs in tumor tissue.

Heat insulation effect in solar radiation of polyurethane powder coating nanocomposite

This study aims to improve polyurethane-based coating by modified zirconium oxide and aluminum oxide nanoparticles for preparing thin polymeric heat insulation coatings. In the first step, the nanoparticles were chemically modified with the silane coupling agent. Then, three different weight percent of modified nanoparticles (1, 3, and 5% w/w) were mixed with polyurethane, to prepare the nanocomposites, which were coated on metallic plate samples. Then, these plates are used to measure the radiation heat transfer coefficients, absorption coefficient in a region of short wavelengths (UV/VIS/NIR), the emissivity coefficient, and thermography of the samples in a region of long wavelengths (IR). Results showed that by adding the modified nanoparticles to the polyurethane matrix, absorption was decreased and the emissivity coefficient was increased. According to the thermography results, it was observed that the surface temperature of both samples with 3% w/w of nanoparticles had the minimum temperature compare to others. Minimum heat surface observed for 3% w/w of modified nano zirconium oxide.

Research progress of environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings

The antifouling mechanisms and research progress in the past three years of environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings are introduced in this work.
