Carbon-Enhanced Hydrated Salt Phase Change Materials for Thermal Management Applications

Inorganic hydrated salt phase change materials (PCMs) hold promise for improving the energy conversion efficiency of thermal systems and facilitating the exploration of renewable thermal energy. Hydrated salts, however, often suffer from low thermal conductivity, supercooling, phase separation, leakage and poor solar absorptance. In recent years, compounding hydrated salts with functional carbon materials has emerged as a promising way to overcome these shortcomings and meet the application demands. This work reviews the recent progress in preparing carbon-enhanced hydrated salt phase change composites for thermal management applications. The intrinsic properties of hydrated salts and their shortcomings are firstly introduced. Then, the advantages of various carbon materials and general approaches for preparing carbon-enhanced hydrated salt PCM composites are briefly described. By introducing representative PCM composites loaded with carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers, graphene oxide, graphene, expanded graphite, biochar, activated carbon and multifunctional carbon, the ways that one-dimensional, two-dimensional, three-dimensional and hybrid carbon materials enhance the comprehensive thermophysical properties of hydrated salts and affect their phase change behavior is systematically discussed. Through analyzing the enhancement effects of different carbon fillers, the rationale for achieving the optimal performance of the PCM composites, including both thermal conductivity and phase change stability, is summarized. Regarding the applications of carbon-enhanced hydrate salt composites, their use for the thermal management of electronic devices, buildings and the human body is highlighted. Finally, research challenges for further improving the overall thermophysical properties of carbon-enhanced hydrated salt PCMs and pushing towards practical applications and potential research directions are discussed. It is expected that this timely review could provide valuable guidelines for the further development of carbon-enhanced hydrated salt composites and stimulate concerted research efforts from diverse communities to promote the widespread applications of high-performance PCM composites.

Tumor microenvironment-activated theranostic nanoreactor for NIR-II Photoacoustic imaging-guided tumor-specific photothermal therapy

Theranostic agents that can be sensitively and specifically activated by the tumor microenvironment (TME) have recently attracted considerable attention. In this study, TME-activatable 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)-copper peroxide (CuO2)@poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)@red blood cell membrane (RBCM) (TCPR) nanoparticles (NPs) for second near-infrared photoacoustic imaging-guided tumor-specific photothermal therapy were developed by co-loading CuO2 NPs and TMB into PLGA camouflaged by RBCMs. As an efficient H2O2 supplier, once exposed to a proton-rich TME, CuO2 NPs can generate H2O2 and Cu2+, which are further reduced to Cu+ by endogenous glutathione. Subsequently, the Cu+-mediated Fenton-like reaction produces cytotoxic ·OH to kill the cancer cells and induce TMB-mediated photoacoustic and photothermal effects. Combined with the RBCM modification-prolonged blood circulation, TCPR NPs display excellent specificity and efficiency in suppressing tumor growth, paving the way for more accurate, safe, and efficient cancer theranostics.

In vivo synergistic tumor therapies based on copper sulfide photothermal therapeutic nanoplatforms

Tumor cells may be eliminated by increasing their temperature. This is achieved via photothermal therapy (PTT) by penetrating the tumor tissue with near-infrared light and converting light energy into heat using photothermal agents. Copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) are commonly used as PTAs in PTT. In this review, we aimed to discuss the synergism between tumor PTT with CuS NPs and other therapies such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, dynamic therapies (photodynamic, chemodynamic, and sonodynamic therapy), immunotherapy, gene therapy, gas therapy, and magnetic hyperthermia. Furthermore, we summarized the results obtained with a combination of two treatments and at least two therapies, with PTT as one of the included therapies. Finally, we summarized the benefits and drawbacks of various therapeutic options and state of the art CuS-based PTT and provided future directions for such therapies.

Recent applications of phase-change materials in tumor therapy and theranostics

Phase-change materials (PCMs) are a type of special material which can store and release a large amount of thermal energy without any significant temperature change. They are emerging in recent years as a promising functional material in tumor therapy and theranostics due to their accurate responses to the temperature variations, biocompatibility and low toxicity. In this review, we will introduce the main types of PCMs and their desirable physiochemical properties for biomedical applications, and highlight the recent progress of PCM's applications in the modulated release of antitumor drugs, with special attentions paid to various ways to initiate temperature-dependent phase change, the concomitant thermal therapy and its combination with or activation of other therapies, particularly unconventional therapies. We will also summarize PCM's recent applications in tumor theranostics, where both drugs and imaging probes are delivered by PCMs for controlled drug release and imaging-guided therapy. Finally, the future perspectives and potential limitations of harnessing PCMs in tumor therapy will be discussed.

Nanotechnology-based diagnostics and therapeutics in acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a systematic review of preclinical studies

Background: Leukemia is a malignant disease that threatens human health and life. Nano-delivery systems improve drug solubility, bioavailability, and blood circulation time, and release drugs selectively at desired sites using targeting or sensing strategies. As drug carriers, they could improve therapeutic outcomes while reducing systemic toxicity. They have also shown promise in improving leukemia detection and diagnosis. The study aimed to assess the potential of nanotechnology-based diagnostics and therapeutics in preclinical human acute lymphoblastic leukemia (h-ALL). Methods: We performed a systematic search through April 2022. Articles written in English reporting the toxicity, efficacy, and safety of nanotechnology-based drugs (in the aspect of treatment) and specificity, limit of detection (LOD), or sensitivity (in the aspect of the detection field) in preclinical h-ALL were included. The study was performed according to PRISMA instructions. The methodological quality was assessed using the QualSyst tool. Results: A total of 63 original articles evaluating nanotechnology-based therapeutics and 35 original studies evaluating nanotechnology-based diagnostics were included in this review. As therapeutics in ALL, nanomaterials offer controlled release, targeting or sensing ligands, targeted gene therapy, photodynamic therapy and photothermic therapy, and reversal of multidrug-resistant ALL. A narrative synthesis of studies revealed that nanoparticles improve the ratio of efficacy to the toxicity of anti-leukemic drugs. They have also been developed as a vehicle for biomolecules (such as antibodies) that can help detect and monitor leukemic biomarkers. Therefore, nanomaterials can help with early diagnostics and personalized treatment of ALL. Conclusion: This review discussed nanotechnology-based preclinical strategies to achieve ALL diagnosis and therapy advancement. This involves modern drug delivery apparatuses and detection devices for prompt and targeted disease diagnostics. Nonetheless, we are yet in the experimental phase and investigational stage in the field of nanomedicine, with many features remained to be discovered as well as numerous problems to be solved.

Phase-change materials-based platforms for biomedicine

Recently, phase-change materials (PCMs) have gathered enormous attention in diverse fields of medicine, particularly in bioimaging, therapeutic delivery, and tissue engineering. Due to the excellent physicochemical characteristics and morphological characteristics of PCMs, several developments have been demonstrated in the construction of diverse PCMs-based architectures toward providing new burgeoning opportunities in developing innovative technologies and improving the therapeutic benefits of the existing formulations. However, the fabrication of PCM-based materials into colloidally stable particles remains challenging due to their natural hydrophobicity and high crystallinity. This review systematically emphasizes various PCMs-based platforms, such as traditional PCMs (liposomes) and their nanoarchitectured composites, including PCMs as core, shell, and gatekeeper, highlighting the pros and cons of these architectures for delivering bioactives, imaging anatomical features, and engineering tissues. Finally, we summarize the article with an exciting outlook, discussing the current challenges and future prospects for PCM-based platforms as biomaterials.

Iron-Based Hollow Nanoplatforms for Cancer Imaging and Theranostics

Over the past decade, iron (Fe)-based hollow nanoplatforms (Fe-HNPs) have attracted increasing attention for cancer theranostics, due to their high safety and superior diagnostic/therapeutic features. Specifically, Fe-involved components can serve as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs) and Fenton-like/photothermal/magnetic hyperthermia (MTH) therapy agents, while the cavities are able to load various small molecules (e.g., fluorescent dyes, chemotherapeutic drugs, photosensitizers, etc.) to allow multifunctional all-in-one theranostics. In this review, the recent advances of Fe-HNPs for cancer imaging and treatment are summarized. Firstly, the use of Fe-HNPs in single T₁-weighted MRI and T₂-weighted MRI, T₁-/T₂-weighted dual-modal MRI as well as other dual-modal imaging modalities are presented. Secondly, diverse Fe-HNPs, including hollow iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles (NPs), hollow matrix-supported IO NPs, hollow Fe-complex NPs and hollow Prussian blue (PB) NPs are described for MRI-guided therapies. Lastly, the potential clinical obstacles and implications for future research of these hollow Fe-based nanotheranostics are discussed.

Recent advances in smart nanoplatforms for tumor non-interventional embolization therapy

Tumor embolization therapy has attracted great attention due to its high efficiency in inhibiting tumor growth by cutting off tumor nutrition and oxygen supply by the embolic agent. Although transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) is the mainstream technique in the clinic, there are still some limitations to be considered, especially the existence of high risks and complications. Recently, nanomaterials have drawn wide attention in disease diagnosis, drug delivery, and new types of therapies, such as photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy, owing to their unique optical, thermal, convertible and in vivo transport properties. Furthermore, the utilization of nanoplatforms in tumor non-interventional embolization therapy has attracted the attention of researchers. Herein, the recent advances in this area are summarized in this review, which revealed three different types of nanoparticle strategies: (1) nanoparticles with active targeting effects or stimuli responsiveness (ultrasound and photothermal) for the safe delivery and responsive release of thrombin; (2) tumor microenvironment (copper and phosphate, acidity and GSH/H₂O₂)-responsive nanoparticles for embolization therapy with high specificity; and (3) peptide-based nanoparticles with mimic functions and excellent biocompatibility for tumor embolization therapy. The benefits and limitations of each kind of nanoparticle in tumor non-interventional embolization therapy will be highlighted. Investigations of nanoplatforms are undoubtedly of great significance, and some advanced nanoplatform systems have arrived at a new height and show potential applications in practical applications.

Lasered Graphene Microheaters Modified with Phase-Change Composites: New Approach to Smart Patch Drug Delivery

The combination of paraffin wax and O,O′-bis(2-aminopropyl) polypropylene glycol–block–polyethylene glycol–block–polypropylene glycol was used as a phase-change material (PCM) for the controlled delivery of curcumin. The PCM was combined with a graphene-based heater derived from the laser scribing of polyimide film. This assembly provides a new approach to a smart patch through which release can be electronically controlled, allowing repetitive dosing. Rather than relying on passive diffusion, delivery is induced and terminated through the controlled heating of the PCM with transfer only occurring when the PCM transitions from solid to liquid. The material properties of the device and release characteristics of the strategy under repetitive dosing are critically assessed. The delivery yield of curcumin was found to be 3.5 µg (4.5 µg/cm²) per 3 min thermal cycle.

Thermally switchable, crystallizable oil and silicone composite adhesives for skin-interfaced wearable devices

Continuous health monitoring is essential for clinical care, especially for patients in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. Monitoring currently requires wired biosensors affixed to the skin with strong adhesives that can cause irritation and iatrogenic injuries during removal. Emerging wireless alternatives are attractive, but requirements for skin adhesives remain. Here, we present a materials strategy enabling wirelessly triggered reductions in adhesive strength to eliminate the possibility for injury during removal. The materials involve silicone composites loaded with crystallizable oils with melting temperatures close to, but above, surface body temperature. This solid/liquid phase transition occurs upon heating, reducing the adhesion at the skin interface by more than 75%. Experimental and computational studies reveal insights into effects of oil mixed randomly and patterned deterministically into the composite. Demonstrations in skin-integrated sensors that include wirelessly controlled heating and adhesion reduction illustrate the broad utility of these ideas in clinical-grade health monitoring.

On-Demand Triggered Chemodynamic Therapy by NIR-II Light on Oxidation-Prevented Bismuth Nanodots

As the least toxic heavy metal, monoelemental bismuth nanomaterials with several superiorities are the ideal theranostic agents. However, bismuth nanoparticles are easily oxidized by oxygen in air or media, limiting their clinical application. In contrast, the oxidization of Bi⁰ to Bi³⁺ can activate the chemodynamic therapy (CDT) by transferring endogenous H₂O₂ into ^•OH. Herein, a well-designed Bi-DMSNs@PCM nanosystem was prepared via in situ growth of Bi nanodots and a coating of phase-change material (PCM) on the surface of dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs). The coated PCM protects the Bi nanodots from oxidation by keeping them in the Bi⁰ state for more than 15 d. When irradiated using the near infrared-II (NIR-II) laser with a low power density (0.5 W/cm²), the heat generated from the Bi nanodots melts the PCM shell to trigger CDT through a Fenton-like reaction, accompanied by heat-induced photothermal therapy (PTT). Notably, the CDT can also compensate for the reduced PTT effect caused by the oxidation of Bi nanodots, and a satisfactory treatment effect is realized. Additionally, photoacoustic and computed tomography imaging properties were obtained. Our strategy transfers the detrimental self-oxidation of bismuth to a beneficial therapeutic mode, enhancing the potential of Bi for clinical use.

Recent advances of cancer chemodynamic therapy based on Fenton/Fenton-like chemistry

Applying Fenton chemistry in the tumor microenvironment (TME) for cancer therapy is the most significant feature of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Owing to the mild acid and overexpressed H2O2 in TME, more cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) are generated in tumor cells via Fenton and Fenton-like reactions. Without external stimulus and drug resistance generation, reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated CDT exhibits a specific and desirable anticancer effect and has been seen as a promising strategy for cancer therapy. However, optimizing the treatment efficiency of CDT in TME is still challenging because of the limited catalytic efficiency of CDT agents and the strong cancer antioxidant capacity in TME. Hence, scientists are trying their best to design and fabricate many more CDT agents with excellent catalytic activity and remodeling TME for optimal CDT. In this perspective, the latest progress of CDT is discussed, with some representative examples presented. Consequently, promising strategies for further optimizing the efficiency of CDT guided by Fenton chemistry are provided. Most importantly, several feasible ways of developing CDT in the future are offered for reference.

Nanomaterials based on phase change materials for antibacterial application

This review presented the applications of PCM-based nanomaterials in bacterial infections. Firstly, the composition and biotoxicity were outlined. Secondly, various antibacterial tactics were highlighted. Lastly, the perspectives were discussed.

Thrombin Based Photothermal-Responsive Nanoplatform for Tumor-Specific Embolization Therapy

The specific coagulation in the tumor vasculature has the potential for the ablation of solid tumors by cutting off the blood supply. However, the safe delivery of effective vessel occluding agents in the tumor-specific embolization therapy remains challenging. Herein, it is reported that the photothermal responsive tumor-specific embolization therapy based on thrombin (Thr) is delivered by intravenous injection via the phase-change materials (PCM)-based nanoparticles. The wax sealing profile of PCM enables safe delivery and prevents the preleakage of Thr in the blood circulation. While in the tumor site, the thermal effect induced by IR780 triggers the melting of PCM and rapidly releases Thr to generate coagulation in the tumor blood vessels. Based on the safe delivery and controllable release of Thr, thermal responsive tumor-specific embolization therapy could be achieved with high efficiency and no significant damage to normal organs and tissues. The safe administration of Thr to induce vascular infarction in tumors based on PCM nanoparticles in this work shows a promising strategy for improving the therapeutic specificity and efficacy of coagulation-based tumor therapy.
