Plasmene nanosheets as optical skin strain sensors

Tailor-Made Gold Nanomaterials for Applications in Soft Bioelectronics and Optoelectronics

In modern nanoscience and nanotechnology, gold nanomaterials are indispensable building blocks that have demonstrated a plethora of applications in catalysis, biology, bioelectronics, and optoelectronics. Gold nanomaterials possess many appealing material properties, such as facile control over their size/shape and surface functionality, intrinsic chemical inertness yet with high biocompatibility, adjustable localized surface plasmon resonances, tunable conductivity, wide electrochemical window, etc. Such material attributes have been recently utilized for designing and fabricating soft bioelectronics and optoelectronics. This motivates to give a comprehensive overview of this burgeoning field. The discussion of representative tailor-made gold nanomaterials, including gold nanocrystals, ultrathin gold nanowires, vertically aligned gold nanowires, hard template-assisted gold nanowires/gold nanotubes, bimetallic/trimetallic gold nanowires, gold nanomeshes, and gold nanosheets, is begun. This is followed by the description of various fabrication methodologies for state-of-the-art applications such as strain sensors, pressure sensors, electrochemical sensors, electrophysiological devices, energy-storage devices, energy-harvesting devices, optoelectronics, and others. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities are discussed.

Synthesis of Self-healing and Light-, Thermal-, and Humidity-induced Deformative Polyurethane Actuator

Intelligent actuating materials have drawn enormous attention because of their potential applications in soft robots, smart sensors, bionics, etc. Aiming to integrate light, thermal, and humidity stimuli deformations and self-healing function into a single polymer, a smart actuating polyurethane material CPPU-50 is designed and successfully synthesized through co-polymerization of azobenzene-containing Azo-C12 , polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200), and 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) at a ratio of 1:1:2. The obtained polyurethane CPPU-50 exhibits good photoinduced bending, thermal responsive shape memory effect, humidity triggered deflections and self-healing properties. Furthermore, an actuator combining light and thermal stimuli is created and the self-healing CPPU-50 film can withstand the object of 1800 times without tearing. This work can pave a way for further development of long-lived multi-stimuli-responsive actuating devices and intelligent materials.

Speckle-based high-resolution multimodal soft sensing

Skin-like soft sensors are key components for human–machine interfaces; however, the simultaneous sensing of several types of stimuli remains challenging because large-scale sensor integration is required with numerous wire connections. We propose an optical high-resolution multimodal sensing approach, which does not require integrating multiple sensors. This approach is based on the combination of an optical scattering phenomenon, which can encode the information of various stimuli as a speckle pattern, and a decoding technique using deep learning. We demonstrate the simultaneous sensing of three different physical quantities—contact force, contact location, and temperature—with a single soft material. Another unique capability of the proposed approach is spatially continuous sensing with an ultrahigh resolution of few tens of micrometers, in contrast to previous multimodal sensing approaches. Furthermore, a haptic soft device is presented for a human–machine interface. Our approach encourages the development of high-performance smart skin-like sensors.

Single-particle analysis of micro/nanoplastics by SEM-Raman technique

Micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) have received global concern due to their widespread contamination, ingestion in organisms, and the ability to cross the biological barrier. Although MNPs have been detected in a variety of ecosystems, the identification of single MNPs remains an unsolved challenge. Herein, for the first time, scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which combined the advantages of ultrahigh spatial resolution of SEM and structural fingerprint of Raman spectroscopy, was proposed to identify MNPs at single-particle level. Under the optimum conditions, the polystyrene (PS) MNPs with sizes of 500 nm and 1 μm were identified by the image of SEM and fingerprint peaks of Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, the applicability of the method in different sample matrices and for other types of MNPs such as poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) with the sizes of 300 nm, 1 μm were validated. This method is simple, rapid and effective and is likely to provide an essential tool to identify other micro/nanoparticles in addition to MNPs.

Skin bioelectronics towards long-term, continuous health monitoring

Skin bioelectronics are considered as an ideal platform for personalised healthcare because of their unique characteristics, such as thinness, light weight, good biocompatibility, excellent mechanical robustness, and great skin conformability. Recent advances in skin-interfaced bioelectronics have promoted various applications in healthcare and precision medicine. Particularly, skin bioelectronics for long-term, continuous health monitoring offer powerful analysis of a broad spectrum of health statuses, providing a route to early disease diagnosis and treatment. In this review, we discuss (1) representative healthcare sensing devices, (2) material and structure selection, device properties, and wireless technologies of skin bioelectronics towards long-term, continuous health monitoring, (3) healthcare applications: acquisition and analysis of electrophysiological, biophysical, and biochemical signals, and comprehensive monitoring, and (4) rational guidelines for the design of future skin bioelectronics for long-term, continuous health monitoring. Long-term, continuous health monitoring of advanced skin bioelectronics will open unprecedented opportunities for timely disease prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment, demonstrating great promise to revolutionise traditional medical practices.

Integrated Fabrication of Novel Inkjet-Printed Silver Nanoparticle Sensors on Carbon Fiber Reinforced Nylon Composites

Inkjet-printing technology enables the contactless deposition of functional materials such as conductive inks on surfaces, hence reducing contamination and the risk of substrate damage. In printed electronics, inkjet technology offers the significant advantage of controlling the volume of material deposited, and therefore the fine-tuning of the printed geometry, which is crucial for the performance of the final printed electronics. Inkjet printing of functional inks can be used to produce sensors to detect failure of mechanical structures such as carbon fiber reinforced composite (CFRC) components, instead of using attached sensors, which are subject to delamination. Here, silver nanoparticle-based strain sensors were embedded directly in an insulated carbon-fiber laminate by using inkjet printing to achieve an optimized conductive and adhesive geometry, forming a piezoresistive strain sensor. Following the inkjet-printing optimization process, the sensor conductivity and adhesion performance were evaluated. Finally, the sensor was quantified by using a bending rig which applied a pre-determined strain, with the response indicating an accurate sensitivity as the resistance increased with an increased strain. The ability to embed the sensor directly on the CFRC prevents the use of interfacial adhesives which is the main source of failure due to delamination.

Orientation-Dependent Soft Plasmonics of Gold Nanobipyramid Plasmene Nanosheets

In parallel to the burgeoning field of soft electronics, soft plasmonics focuses on the design and fabrication of plasmonic structures supported on elastomers and to understand how their properties respond to mechanical deformations. Here, we report on a partial ligand-stripping strategy to fabricate elastomer-supported gold nanobipyramid (NBP) plasmene nanosheets. Unlike spherelike building blocks, NBP-building blocks display complex orientation-dependent plasmonic responses to external strains. By collecting polarized plasmonic resonance spectra in conjunction with electrostatic eigenmode modeling, we reveal simultaneous changes in interparticle spacing and spatial orientations of NBP building blocks under mechanical strains. Such changes are directly related to initial NBP packing orders. Further analysis of strain sensitivities for various NBP plasmenes indicated that plasmonic spectra of ∼45° oriented samples are mostly susceptible to strain at acute polarized angles. The results presented may enable novel applications in future soft optoelectronic devices in sensing, encryption, and data storage.
