Abstract
Highly luminescent silver(I) coordination polymers [Ag2X2(PPh3)2(Me2pyz)]n (X = I, Br, Cl; Me2pyz: 2,5-dimethylpyrazine) were prepared together with copper congeners [Cu2X2(PPh3)2(Me2pyz)]n (X = I, Br). All the complexes showed thermally activated delayed fluorescence from the charge-transfer states in the visible region, from blue to red. The isomorphous relationship among the complexes allowed a detailed discussion of the effect of halogenido ligands and crystal packing on their luminescence energy. The relaxation in the emissive excited states (ESs) was determined to be more remarkable in silver complexes than in copper complexes despite their isomorphous structures, and the electronic effect of halogenido ligands was comparable to the effect of relaxation in emissive ESs.

Abstract
A series of luminescent Cu4I4 clusters with stair-step, cubane, and octahedral geometries supported by a novel type of cyclic As,N-ligand, pyridyl-containing 10-phenoxarsines, were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. An unusual arrangement of As,N-bidentate and μ2-iodo ligands was found in the octahedral cluster. The structural diversity of the Cu(I) complexes is reflected in their photophysical properties: the phosphorescence spectra of the compounds display emission in a broad spectral range of 495-597 nm. The complex with the Cu4I4L2 stoichiometry bearing a stair-step Cu4I4 core demonstrates temperature-dependent dual emission. The luminescence properties of all complexes were rationalized by DFT calculations.

Abstract
A series of monometallic Ag(I) and Cu(I) halide complexes bearing 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (PyrPhos, L) as a ligand were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The structure of most of the derivatives was unambiguously established by X-ray diffraction analysis, revealing the formation of mono-, di-, and tetranuclear complexes having general formulas MXL3 (M = Cu, X = Cl, Br; M = Ag, X = Cl, Br, I), Ag2X2L3 (X = Cl, Br), and Ag4X4L4 (X = Cl, Br, I). The Ag(I) species were compared to the corresponding Cu(I) analogues from a structural point of view. The formation of Cu(I)/Ag(I) heterobimetallic complexes MM'X2L3 (M/M' = Cu, Ag; X = Cl, Br, I) was also investigated. The X-ray structure of the bromo-derivatives revealed the formation of two possible MM'Br2L3 complexes with Cu/Ag ratios, respectively, of 7:1 and 1:7. The ratio between Cu and Ag was studied by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) measurements. The structure of the binuclear homo- and heterometallic derivatives was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing the tendency of the PyrPhos ligands not to maintain the bridging motif in the presence of Ag(I) as the metal center.

Abstract
Tris(hetaryl)substituted phosphines and their chalcogenides are promising polydentate ligands for the design of metal complexes. An experimental and theoretical conformational analysis of tris[2-(4-pyridyl)ethyl]phosphine, tris[2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl]phosphine, and their chalcogenides was carried out by the methods of dipole moments, IR spectroscopy and DFT B3PW91/6-311++G(df,p) calculations. In solution, these compounds exist as an equilibrium of mainly non-eclipsed (synclinal or antiperiplanar) forms with a predominance of a symmetrical conformer having a gauche-orientation of the Csp3-Csp3 bonds of pyridylethyl substituents relative to the P=X bond (X = lone pair, O, S, Se) and a gauche-orientation of the pyridyl rings relative to the zigzag ethylene bridges. Regardless of the presence and nature of the chalcogen atom (oxygen, sulfur, or selenium) in the studied molecules with many axes of internal rotation, steric factors-the different position of the nitrogen atoms in the pyridyl rings and the configuration of ethylene bridges-determine the realization and spatial structure of preferred conformers.

Abstract
The present work introduces the solvent exchange procedure as a route for conversion of the Cu4I4L2 complex, where the Cu4I4 cluster core is coordinated with two P,N-ligands (L), into an aqueous colloid. The analysis of both colloidal and supernatant phases revealed some losses in CuI going from the initial Cu4I4L2 complex to Cu2I2L3-based nanoparticles. The comparative analysis of IR, 31P NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass-spectrometry and luminescence data argued for a contribution of the “butterfly”-like structures of the Cu2I2 cluster core to Cu2I2L3-based nanoparticles, although the amorphous nature of the latter restricted structure evaluation from the PXRD data. The green luminescence of the colloids revealed their chemical stability under pH variations in the solutions of some amino acids and peptides, and to specify the temperature and concentration conditions triggering the oxidative degradation of the nanoparticles. The spin trap-facilitated ESR study indicated that the oxidative transformations were followed by the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The physiological temperature level (310 K) enhanced the ROS generation by nanoparticles, but the ROS level was suppressed in the solution of GSH at pH = 7.0. The cytotoxicity of nanoparticles was evaluated in the M-HeLa cell line and is discussed in correlation with their cell internalization and intracellular oxidative transformations.

Abstract
Tertiary diethylpyridylphosphine was synthesized by the reaction of pyridylphosphine with bromoethane in a suberbasic medium. The reaction of phosphine with the copper(I) iodide led to the formation of a copper(I) coordination polymer, which, according to the X-ray diffraction data, has an intermediate structure with a copper-halide core between the octahedral and stairstep geometries of the Cu4I4 clusters. The obtained coordination polymer exhibits a green emission in the solid state, which is caused by the 3(M+X)LCT transitions. The heating up of the copper(I) coordination polymer to 138.5 °C results in its monomerization and the formation of a new solid-state phase. The new phase exhibits a red emission, with the emission band maximum at 725 nm. According to the experimental data and quantum chemical computations, it was concluded that depolymerization probably leads to a complex that is formed with the octahedral structure of the copper-halide core. The resulting solid-state phase can be backward-converted to the polymer phase via recrystallization from the acetone or DMF. Therefore, the obtained coordination polymer can be considered a sensor or detector for the overheating of processes that should be maintained at temperatures below 138 °C (e.g., engines, boiling liquids, solar heat systems, etc.).

Abstract
Due to their tight structures, it is usually difficult for one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs) to form permanent pores unless 2D and 3D topologies are formed via supramolecular interactions, so studies in the field of oxygen sensing on 1D CPs are rarely reported. Here, we report a 1D Cu(I) cluster-based CP with dual sensing characteristics for temperature and oxygen. Even if the porosity is only 6.6%, the quenching rate of this CP reaches 98.4% with 1 bar O2 at room temperature. Its luminescence intensity exhibits a unique thermal “quenching, then activating” behavior during monotonic variations in temperature.

Abstract
A synthetic method for a primary 2-(thiophen-2'-yl)ethylphosphine was developed. The reaction of thiophenylethylphosphine with paraformaldehyde and primary arylamines leads to the formation of cyclic bisphosphines, namely, 1,5-di(aryl)-3,7-bis(thiophenylethyl)-1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane (aryl = phenyl, p-tolyl). The obtained bisphosphines form cationic bis-P,P-chelate complexes with copper(I) tetrafluoroborate, which were structurally characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental and XRD analyses. Surprisingly, the copper(I) complexes display a multiband emission in the solid state with maxima at 355-360, 425-430, and 480-490 nm and nanosecond lifetimes (1.2-1.4 ns) upon a 335 nm excitation. The excitation of the complexes at 360 nm at room temperature results in a deep-blue emission at 425-430 nm and a tail at 460-490 nm. A temperature decrease leads to an increased intensity of the emission band at 480 nm, while the luminescence lifetimes insignificantly increased up to 14 ns. Quantum chemical calculations explain the observed unusual luminescent behavior by the existence of "undistorted" and "flattened" singlet excited states of copper(I) complexes at room temperature and at 77 K, respectively.

Abstract
Two luminescent Cu4I4-cubane tetramers with N-methyl-10-(p-halogenophenyl)-5,10-dihydrophenarsazine ligands were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The UV-Vis absorption and emission properties were studied and rationalized by DFT and time-dependent DFT calculations. The luminescence behavior was found to be rather different from that of recently reported tetranuclear copper iodide cubane clusters based on As,O-analogues - 10-(aryl)phenoxarsines. The crystalline powders of both complexes exhibit the temperature-dependent dual-band emission: the low-energy emission originates from the cluster-centered (3CC) triplet state, whereas the high-energy emission was attributed to the intraligand (3IL) triplet state.

Reactions of copper(i) iodide with 2-(methylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L1) in various metal-to-ligand molar ratios in MeCN afford a ladder-type coordination polymer [Cu2L1I2]n with polymeric chains built from double-stranded (Cu2I2)n ribbons supported on both sides by μ2-N,S-L1 molecules. Although the second ligand, 2-(ethylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L2), differs from L1 only by a methylene group, its reactions with copper(i) iodide in MeCN yield not only a congenerous coordination polymer, [Cu2L2I2]n, but also [CuL2I]n, in which a similar (Cu2I2)n ribbon is decorated by N-monodentate L2 molecules. Absorption spectra of all compounds represent an interplay of metal + iodine-to-ligand charge transfer (XMLCT) and ligand-centered (LC) and cluster-centered (CC) transitions, while the emission occurs from the excited states of XMLCT nature. The luminescence of [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n is blue-shifted and greatly enhanced in comparison with that of [CuL2I]n (quantum yields: 89% and 68% for [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]nvs. 23% for [CuL2I]n at 77 K), which can be associated with a more rigid μ2-N,S coordination of 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands in [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n leading to a less distorted T1 state.

Abstract
The first example of a triply bridging (μ3 -P) phosphine ligand has been discovered in the crown-shaped [Cu3 (μ2 -Hal)3 L] (Hal=Cl, Br, or I) complexes supported by tris[2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl]phosphine (L). Theoretical analysis completely confirms the observed μ3 -P-bridging pattern, revealing the interaction of the same lone pair of phosphorus with three valence 4s-orbitals of Cu atoms. The presented complexes exhibit outstanding blue phosphorescence (λem =442-465 nm) with the quantum efficiency reaching 100 %. The complex [Cu3 (μ2 -I)3 L] also exhibits remarkable thermo- and mechanochromic luminescence resulting in a sharp change in the emission colour upon external stimuli. These findings essentially contribute to coordination chemistry of the pnictine ligands.

Abstract
To develop new and flexible CuI containing luminescent substances, we extend our previous investigations on two metal-centered species to four metal-centered complexes. These complexes could be a basis for designing new organic light-emitting diode (OLED) relevant species. Both the synthesis and in-depth spectroscopic analysis, combined with high-level theoretical calculations are presented on a series of tetranuclear CuI complexes with a halide containing Cu4 X4 core (X=iodide, bromide or chloride) and two 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine bridging ligands with a methyl group in para (4-Me) or ortho (6-Me) position of the pyridine ring. The structure of the electronic ground state is characterized by X-ray diffraction, NMR, and IR spectroscopy with the support of theoretical calculations. In contrast to the para system, the complexes with ortho-substituted bridging ligands show a remarkable and reversible temperature-dependent dual phosphorescence. Here, we combine for the first time the luminescence thermochromism with time-resolved FTIR spectroscopy. Thus, we receive experimental data on the structures of the two triplet states involved in the luminescence thermochromism. The transient IR spectra of the underlying triplet metal/halide-to-ligand charge transfer (3 M/XLCT) and cluster-centered (3 CC) states were obtained and interpreted by comparison with calculated vibrational spectra. The systematic and significant dependence of the bridging halides was analyzed.

Abstract
The syntheses of a sterically demanding, multidentate bis(quinaldinyl)phenylphosphine oxide ligand and some Cu(I) and Ag(I) complexes thereof are described. By introducing a methylene group between the quinoline unit and phosphorus, the phosphine oxide ligand gains additional flexibility. This specific ligand design induces not only a versatile coordination chemistry but also a rarely observed and investigated behavior in solution. The flexibility of the birdlike ligand offers the unexpected opportunity of open-wing and closed-wing coordination to the metal. In fact, the determined crystal structures of these complexes show both orientations. Investigations of the ligand in solution show a strong dependency of the chemical shift of the CH2 protons on the solvent used. Variable-temperature, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy was carried out, and an interesting dynamic behavior of the complexes is observed. Due to the introduced flexibility, the quinaldinyl substituents change their arrangements from open-wing to closed-wing upon cooling, while still staying coordinated to the metal. This change in conformation is completely reversible when warming up the sample. Based on 2D NMR spectra measured at -80 °C, an assignment of the signals corresponding to the different arrangements was possible. Additionally, the copper(I) complex shows reversible redox activity in solution. The combination of structural flexibility of a multidentate ligand and the positive redox properties of the resulting complexes comprises key factors for a possible application of such compounds in transition-metal catalysis. Via a reorganization of the ligand, occurring transition states could be stabilized, and selectivity might be enhanced.

Abstract
The heterogeneous reaction between copper(i) halide and pyridine derivative ligand in a suspension conveniently afforded luminescent copper(i) complexes. The progress of the reaction was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric (TG) measurements. The structure of the obtained complexes was clarified by comparison with the X-ray analysis of a single crystal obtained by the homogeneous reaction in a solution. The reaction was affected by the type of solvent and substituents on the pyridine ligand. The reaction proceeded quantitatively, not depending on copper(i) halide, when ethyl acetate and 3-bromopyridine were used as the solvent and ligand, respectively. X-ray analysis of the single-crystals obtained by the corresponding reaction in solution revealed that the reaction in suspension afforded the same stair-shaped quasi-one-dimensional structure. The obtained copper(i) complex powders displayed luminescence, which was attributed to the halide/metal-to-ligand charge transfer (XMLCT), as elucidated by crystal orbital distribution and principal component of excitation based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
