Paper/GO/e-Au flexible SERS sensors for in situ detection of tricyclazole in orange juice and on cucumber skin at the sub-ppb level: machine learning-assisted data analysis

Despite being an excellent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active material, gold nanoparticles were difficult to be loaded onto the surface of filter paper to fabricate flexible SERS substrates. In this study, electrochemically synthesized gold nanoparticles (e-AuNPs) were deposited on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in solution by ultrasonication, resulting in the formation of a GO/Au hybrid material. Thanks to the support of GO, the hybrid material could adhere onto the surface of filter paper, which was immersed into a GO/Au solution for 24 h and dried naturally at room temperature. The paper-based materials were then employed as substrates for a surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing platform to detect tricyclazole (TCZ), a widely used pesticide, resulting in better sensitivity compared to the use of paper/Au SERS sensors. With the most optimal GO content of 4%, paper/GO/Au SERS sensors could achieve a limit of detection of 1.32 × 10-10 M in standard solutions. Furthermore, the filter paper-based SERS sensors also exhibited significant advantages in sample collection in real samples. On one hand, the sensors were dipped into orange juice, allowing TCZ molecules in this real sample to be adsorbed onto their SERS active surface. On the other hand, they were pasted onto cucumber skin to collect the analytes. As a result, the paper/GO/Au SERS sensors could sense TCZ in orange juice and on cucumber skin at concentrations as low as 10-9 M (∼2 ppb). In addition, a machine learning model was designed and developed, allowing the sensing system to discriminate TCZ from nine other organic compounds and predict the presence of TCZ on cucumber skin at concentrations down to 10-9 M.

Floral waste synthesized silver nanoparticles as sensor for Cr (VI) ion detection

The presence of heavy metal ions, particularly Cr (VI) in water, is a serious environmental concern. There is a need to develop low-cost and efficient methods for sensing and removing Cr (IV) ions selectively. In this paper, floral waste (FW) extract is used for the synthesis of Ag NPs for sensing Cr (VI) ions in an aqueous solution. Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) were characterized using spectroscopic (UV-visible and FTIR), X-ray diffraction, TEM, and SEM techniques. UV-visible spectroscopic studies revealed that in the presence of Cr (VI) ions, there is an abrupt change in the λ_max value of Ag NPs in aqueous solution, indicating that the synthesized Ag-NP is an excellent sensor for the spectroscopical detection of Cr (VI) ions with a low detection limit of 0.5 ppm. The method is fast, economical, simple, and efficient.

An ultrasensitive "mix-and-detect" kind of fluorescent biosensor for malaoxon detection using the AChE-ATCh-Ag-GO system

Malaoxon, a highly toxic metabolite of malathion, can lead to severe harm or death if ingested. This study introduces a rapid and innovative fluorescent biosensor that relies on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition for detecting malaoxon using Ag-GO nanohybrid. The synthesized nanomaterials (GO, Ag-GO) were evaluated with multiple characterization methods to confirm their elemental composition, morphology, and crystalline structure. The fabricated biosensor works by utilizing AChE to catalyze the substrate acetylthiocholine (ATCh), which generates positively charged thiocholine (TCh) and triggers citrate-coated AgNP aggregation on the GO sheet, leading to an increase in fluorescence emission at 423 nm. However, the presence of malaoxon inhibits the AChE action and reduces the production of TCh, resulting in a decrease in fluorescence emission intensity. This mechanism allows the biosensor to detect a wide range of malaoxon concentrations with excellent linearity and low LOD and LOQ values of 0.001 pM to 1000 pM, 0.9 fM, and 3 fM, respectively. The biosensor also demonstrated superior inhibitory efficacy towards malaoxon compared to other OP pesticides, indicating its resistance to external influences. In practical sample testing, the biosensor displayed recoveries of over 98% with extremely low RSD% values. Based on the results obtained from the study, it can be concluded that the developed biosensor has the potential to be used in various real-world applications for detecting malaoxon in food, and water samples, with high sensitivity, accuracy, and reliability.

Unveiling the effect of crystallinity and particle size of biogenic Ag/ZnO nanocomposites on the electrochemical sensing performance of carbaryl detection in agricultural products

In this study, bio-Ag/ZnO NCs were synthesized via a microwave-assisted biogenic electrochemical method using mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) peel extract as a biogenic reducing agent for the reduction of Zn²⁺ and Ag⁺ ions to form hybrid nanoparticles. The as-synthesized NC samples at three different microwave irradiation temperatures (Z ₇₀, Z ₈₀, Z ₉₀) exhibited a remarkable difference in size and crystallinity that directly impacted their electrocatalytic behaviors as well as electrochemical sensing performance. The obtained results indicate that the Z ₉₀ sample showed the highest electrochemical performance among the investigated samples, which is attributed to the improved particle size distribution and crystal microstructure that enhanced charge transfer and the electroactive surface area. Under the optimal conditions for carbaryl pesticide detection, the proposed nanosensor exhibited a high electrochemical sensitivity of up to 0.303 μA μM^-1 cm^-2 with a detection limit of LOD ∼0.27 μM for carbaryl pesticide detection in a linear range of 0.25-100 μM. Overall, the present work suggests that bio-Ag/ZnO NCs are a potential candidate for the development of a high-performance electrochemical-based non-enzymatic nanosensor with rapid monitoring, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendly to detect carbaryl pesticide residues in agricultural products.

Reduced graphene oxide: Biofabrication and environmental applications

Green synthesis of high-quality reduced graphene oxide (rGO) from agro-industrial waste resources remains attractive owing to its outstanding environmental benefits. The remarkable properties of rGO include excellent morphology, uniform particle size, good optical properties, high conductivity, nontoxicity, and extraordinary chemical stability. Traditional methods for the synthesis of rGO nanomaterials involve several chemical reactions including oxidation, carbonization, toxic solvent, and pyrolysis which produce harmful byproducts. Green preparation of rGO is an emerging area of research in graphene technology which is cost-effective and sustainable in the procedure. Owing to the uniform particle rGO particle size, these smart nanomaterials have wide applicability, including in metal ions and pollutant sensing and adsorption, photocatalysis, optoelectrical devices, medical diagnosis, and drug delivery. Here we review the physicochemical properties of rGO, the biowaste sources and green methods of rGO synthesis, and the diverse applications of rGO, including in water purification and the biomedical fields. With this review, covering more than 200 research articles published on rGO in the last eight years ending in 2022, we aim to provide a quick guide for researchers seeking up-to-date information on the properties, production, and applicability of rGO, with special attention to rGO applications in water purification and the biomedical fields.

Structural and Optical Properties of Graphene Quantum Dots-Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite Thin Film and Its Potential in Plasmonic Sensing of Carbaryl

In this study, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite was prepared and then coated on the surface of gold thin film via the spin coating technique. Subsequently, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) were adopted to understand the structure, surface morphology, and optical properties of the prepared samples. The FT-IR spectral analysis revealed important bands, such as O-H stretching, C=O stretching, C-H stretching, and O=C=O stretching vibrations. The surface roughness of the GQDs-PVA composite thin film was found to be increased after exposure to carbaryl. On the other hand, the optical absorbance of the GQDs-PVA thin film was obtained and further analysis was conducted, revealing a band gap E_g value of 4.090 eV. The sensing potential of the thin film was analyzed using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy. The findings demonstrated that the developed sensor's lowest detection limit for carbaryl was 0.001 ppb, which was lower than that previously reported, i.e., 0.007 ppb. Moreover, other sensing performance parameters, such as full width at half maximum, detection accuracy, and signal-to-noise ratio, were also investigated to evaluate the sensor's efficiency.

Evaluation of Structural and Optical Properties of Graphene Oxide-Polyvinyl Alcohol Thin Film and Its Potential for Pesticide Detection Using an Optical Method

In the present work, graphene oxide (GO)–polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composites thin film has been successfully synthesized and prepared by spin coating techniques. Then, the properties and morphology of the samples were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Experimental FTIR results for GO–PVA thin film demonstrated the existence of important functional groups such as -CH2 stretching, C=O stretching, and O–H stretching. Furthermore, UV-Vis analysis indicated that the GO–PVA thin film had the highest absorbance that can be observed at wavelengths ranging from 200 to 500 nm with a band gap of 4.082 eV. The surface morphology of the GO–PVA thin film indicated the thickness increased when in contact with carbaryl. The incorporation of the GO–PVA thin film with an optical method based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon demonstrated a positive response for the detection of carbaryl pesticide as low as 0.02 ppb. This study has successfully proposed that the GO–PVA thin film has high potential as a polymer nanomaterial-based SPR sensor for pesticide detection.

Probing the Interaction of Heavy and Transition Metal Ions with Silver Nanoparticles Decorated on Graphene Quantum Dots by Spectroscopic and Microscopic Methods

We report a comprehensive study of the interaction of transition and heavy metal ions with graphene quantum dots-capped silver nanoparticles (AgGQDs) using different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies show that the interaction of metal ions with AgGQDs leads to the formation of metal oxides, the formation of zerovalent metals, and the aggregation of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs). The metal ions may interact with AgGQDs through selective coordination with -OH and -COOH functionalities, adsorption on the graphene moiety, and directly to AgNPs. For instance, the interaction of Cd²⁺ with AgGQDs altered the spherical shape of AgNPs into a chain-like structure. On the contrary, the formation of PbO is observed after the addition of Pb²⁺ to AgGQDs. Interestingly, the interaction of AgGQDs with Hg²⁺ results in the complete dissolution of Ag⁰ from the surface of GQDs and subsequent deposition of Hg⁰ on the graphene moiety of GQDs. Unlike transition metal ions, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Hg²⁺ can adsorb strongly on the graphene surface at the bridge, hollow, and top sites, respectively. This special interaction of heavy metal ions with the graphene surface would decide the mechanistic pathway in which the reaction proceeds. The transition metal ions Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Co³⁺, Mn²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Fe³⁺ induced the aggregation of AgNPs.

Recent Advances on Detection of Insecticides Using Optical Sensors

Insecticides are enormously important to industry requirements and market demands in agriculture. Despite their usefulness, these insecticides can pose a dangerous risk to the safety of food, environment and all living things through various mechanisms of action. Concern about the environmental impact of repeated use of insecticides has prompted many researchers to develop rapid, economical, uncomplicated and user-friendly analytical method for the detection of insecticides. In this regards, optical sensors are considered as favorable methods for insecticides analysis because of their special features including rapid detection time, low cost, easy to use and high selectivity and sensitivity. In this review, current progresses of incorporation between recognition elements and optical sensors for insecticide detection are discussed and evaluated well, by categorizing it based on insecticide chemical classes, including the range of detection and limit of detection. Additionally, this review aims to provide powerful insights to researchers for the future development of optical sensors in the detection of insecticides.

A low cost and open access system for rapid synthesis of large volumes of gold and silver nanoparticles

Rapid synthesis of nanomaterials in scalable quantities is critical for accelerating the discovery and commercial translation of nanoscale-based technologies. The synthesis of metal nanogold and silver in volumes larger than 100 mL is not automatized and might require of the use of harsh conditions that in most cases is detrimental for the production of nanoparticles with reproducible size distributions. In this work, we present the development and optimization of an open-access low-cost NanoParticle Flow Synthesis System (NPFloSS) that allows for the rapid preparation of volumes of up to 1 L of gold and silver nanoparticle aqueous solutions.
