Sensitively switchable visible/infrared multispectral detection and imaging based on a tandem perovskite device

Compositional gradient engineering and applications in halide perovskites

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites (HPs) have attracted respectable interests as active layers in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, etc. Besides the promising optoelectronic properties and solution-processed preparation, the soft lattice in HPs leads to flexible and versatile compositions and structures, providing an effective platform to regulate the bandgaps and optoelectronic properties. However, conventional solution-processed HPs are homogeneous in composition. Therefore, it often requires the cooperation of multiple devices in order to achieve multi-band detection or emission, which increases the complexity of the detection/emission system. In light of this, the construction of a multi-component compositional gradient in a single active layer has promising prospects. In this review, we summarize the gradient engineering methods for different forms of HPs. The advantages and limitations of these methods are compared. Moreover, the entropy-driven ion diffusion favors compositional homogeneity, thus the stability issue of the gradient is also discussed for long-term applications. Furthermore, applications based on these compositional gradient HPs will also be presented, where the gradient bandgap introduced therein can facilitate carrier extraction, and the multi-components on one device facilitate functional integration. It is expected that this review can provide guidance for the further development of gradient HPs and their applications.

Vitality surveillance at distance using thin-film tandem-like narrowband near-infrared photodiodes with light-enhanced responsivity

Remote measurement of vital sign parameters like heartbeat and respiration rate represents a compelling challenge in monitoring an individual's health in a noninvasive way. This could be achieved by large field-of-view, easy-to-integrate unobtrusive sensors, such as large-area thin-film photodiodes. At long distances, however, discriminating weak light signals from background disturbance demands superior near-infrared (NIR) sensitivity and optical noise tolerance. Here, we report an inherently narrowband solution-processed, thin-film photodiode with ultrahigh and controllable NIR responsivity based on a tandem-like perovskite-organic architecture. The device has low dark currents (<10^-6 mA cm^-2), linear dynamic range >150 dB, and operational stability over time (>8 hours). With a narrowband quantum efficiency that can exceed 200% at 850 nm and intrinsic filtering of other wavelengths to limit optical noise, the device exhibits higher tolerance to background light than optically filtered silicon-based sensors. We demonstrate its potential in remote monitoring by measuring the heart rate and respiration rate from distances up to 130 cm in reflection.

Tunable Multiband Halide Perovskite Tandem Photodetectors with Switchable Response

Photodetectors with multiple spectral response bands have shown promise to improve imaging and communications through the switchable detection of different photon energies. However, demonstrations to date have been limited to only two bands and lack capability for fast switching in situ. Here, we exploit the band gap tunability and capability of all-perovskite tandem solar cells to demonstrate a new device concept realizing four spectral bands of response from a single multijunction device, with fast, optically controlled switching between the bands. The response to monochromatic light is highly selective and narrowband without the need for additional filters and switches to broader response bands on applying bias light. Sensitive photodetection above 6 × 10¹¹ Jones is demonstrated in all modes, with rapid switching response times of <250 ns. We demonstrate proof of principle on how the manipulation of the modular multiband detector response through light conditions enables diverse applications in optical communications with secure encryption.

Low-voltage-modulated perovskite/organic dual-band photodetectors for visible and near-infrared imaging

Visible and near-infrared (NIR) light dual-band photodetectors (PDs) have potential applications in signal detection, bioimaging, optical communications and safety monitoring. Herein, we report an ultrafast perovskite/organic heterojunction dual-mode PD with a voltage-modulated photoresponse range in visible and NIR spectra. The PD, comprising a perovskite layer to absorb visible light (500-810 nm) and an organic bulk heterojunction layer for NIR light absorption (810-950 nm), exhibited a switchable spectral response in the visible or NIR bands. The voltage-modulated visible and NIR photoresponses of the PD were attributable to controlled charge photogeneration in perovskite and organic blend thin films under different bias polarities. The device exhibited peak responsivities of 93.5 and 102.2 mA/W in the visible and NIR bands, respectively; a high detectivity of 4.3 × 109 Jones (at forward bias of 0.7 V and incident 625 nm light) and 1.6 × 1012 Jones (at reverse bias of -1.5 V and incident 900 nm light); a fast microsecond response time; and a wide dynamic range (>120 dB) both in the visible mode and NIR mode. Also, this voltage-modulated dual-band PD shows promising applications in visible light and NIR imaging, which is proven by demonstrating a PD array with 25 pixels (5 × 5).

Monolithic RGB-NIR Perovskite Photodetector for Fused Multispectral Sensing and Imaging

The multispectral fusion of near-infrared (NIR) and visible red-green-blue (RGB) photons can enhance target identification under weak light conditions. Nevertheless, the crosstalk between NIR and RGB photons in a traditional pixelated sensor impedes their practical application, while using complex algorithms and optical filters would significantly increase the cost, form factor, and frame latency. In this work, a delicate monolithic RGBN (RGB-NIR) multispectral photodetector (PD) is proposed on the basis of perovskite materials without complicated algorithms or optical filters. The multispectral response toward selective RGBN signals in this monolithic PD pixels can be achieved by switching the polarity of the applied bias, affording the following benefits: I_on/I_off ratio of >10⁴, detectivity of >10¹⁰ Jones, crosstalk of -74 dB, and fast response with -3 dB > 10³ Hz. Moreover, proof-of-concept imaging of the iris and periocular with successful recognition in multispectral fusion further confirms its potential for identity authentication.
