Sustainable Synthesis through Catalyst-Free Photoinduced Cascaded Bond Formation

The beginning of photochemical reactions revolutionized synthetic chemistry through sustainable practices. This review explores cutting-edge developments in leveraging light-induced processes for generating cascaded C-C and C-hetero bonds without catalysts. Significantly, catalyst-free photoinduced methodologies have garnered considerable attention, especially in the creation of varied heterocyclic frameworks for drug design and the synthesis of natural products. The article delves into underlying mechanisms, addresses limitations, and evaluates various methodologies, emphasizing the potential of photocatalyst and transition metal-free photochemical reactions to enhance sustainability. Divided into two sections, it covers recent strides in C-C and C-heteroatom and multiple C-heteroatom bond formation reactions.

Developments of pyridodipyrimidine heterocycles and their biological activities

The entitled review aimed to assemble and highlight the synthetic approaches and biological aspects of heterocycles with pyridodipyrimidine motifs. The recent synthetic approaches were categorized according to the accomplishments of the approaches under catalyst or catalyst-free conditions. The topic involved the synthesis of substituted tricyclic systems and spirocyclic systems. The present study offered an overview of the recent literature in addition to a scope of the preceding literature. The proposed mechanisms of the varied target products were discussed. Pyridodipyrimidine displayed potential and privileged cytotoxic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial performances. The competitions, challenges, and prospects are also deliberated.

Solvent- and Catalyst-Free Synthesis of gem-Difluorinated and Polyfluoroarylated Compounds with Nucleophilic or Electrophilic Fluorine-Containing Reaction Partners, Respectively

A novel, efficient and environmentally friendly solvent-free and catalyst-free approach for the synthesis of structurally diverse gem-difluorinated and polyfluoroarylated derivatives with readily available nucleophilic and electrophilic fluorine-containing reaction partners, difluoroenoxysilane and pentafluorobenzaldehyde, is described. This neat protocol is induced by the direct hydrogen-bond interactions between fluorinated and non-fluorinated reactants without the use of heavy metal catalysts or volatile organic solvents and with no need for column chromatographic separation for most cases.

Picolylamine-Ni(ii) complex attached on 1,3,5-triazine-immobilized silica-coated Fe3O4 core/shell magnetic nanoparticles as an environmentally friendly and recyclable catalyst for the one-pot synthesis of substituted pyridine derivatives

In the current study, an environmentally friendly and facile method was proposed for designing and constructing a catalyst with Ni(ii) attached to a picolylamine complex on 1,3,5-triazine-immobilized Fe₃O₄ core-shell magnetic nanoparticles (Ni^II-picolylamine/TCT/APTES@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄) via a stepwise procedure. The as-synthesized nanocatalyst was identified and characterized via Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). The obtained results from the BET analysis indicated that the synthesized nanocatalyst had high specific area (53.61 m² g^-1) and mesoporous structure. TEM observations confirmed the particle size distribution was in the range 23-33 nm. Moreover, the binding energy peaks observed at 855.8 and 864.9 eV in the XPS analysis confirmed the successful and stable attachment of Ni(ii) on the surface of the picolylamine/TCT/APTES@SiO₂@Fe₃O₄. The as-fabricated catalyst was used to produce pyridine derivatives by the one-pot pseudo-four component reaction of malononitrile, thiophenol, and a variety of aldehyde derivatives under solvent-free conditions or EG at 80 °C. The highest yield achieved was 97% for compound 4d in EG at 80 °C with a TOF of 823 h^-1 and TON of 107. It was found that the used catalyst was recyclable for eight consecutive cycles. On the basis of ICP analysis, the results indicated that the Ni leaching was approximately 1%.

Organocatalytic synthesis of (Het)biaryl scaffolds via photoinduced intra/intermolecular C(sp2)-H arylation by 2-pyridone derivatives

A unique N,O-bidentate ligand 6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-pyridone-2-carboxylic acid dimethylamide (L1) catalyzed direct C(sp²)-H (intra/intermolecular) arylation of unactivated arenes has been developed to expedite access to (Het)biaryl scaffolds under UV-irradiation at room temperature. The protocol tolerated diverse functional groups and substitution patterns, affording the target products in moderate to excellent yields. Mechanistic investigations were also carried out to better understand the reaction pathway. Furthermore, the synthetic applicability of this unified approach has been showcased via the construction of biologically relevant 4-quinolone, tricyclic lactam and sultam derivatives.

Visible-Light-Promoted Cross-Coupling of N-Alkylpyridinium Salts and Nitrostyrenes

A stereoselective, denitrative cross-coupling of β-nitrostyrenes with N-alkylpyridinium salts for the preparation of functionalized styrenes has been developed. The visible-light-induced reaction proceeds without any catalyst at ambient temperature. Broad in scope and tolerant to multiple functional groups, the moderately yielding transformation is orthogonal to several traditional metal-catalyzed cross-couplings.

Effect of organic solvents on solvatochromic, fluorescence, and electrochemical properties of synthesized thiazolylcoumarin derivatives

In this present investigation, thiazolylcoumarin derivatives (5a-5k) were synthesized from thiosemicarbazide, ethyl acetoacetate, and naphthaldehyde through a multistep route. The formation of thiazolylcoumarin derivatives with bioactive scaffolds was confirmed through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. A solvatochromic study of synthesized thiazolylcoumarin derivatives was carried out using ultraviolet-visible methods for dimethylformamide (DMF), ethyl acetate, and ethanol solvents. The redox behaviour of as-synthesized thiazolylcoumarin derivatives (5a-5k) was examined in dimethyl sulphoxide by conducting an electrochemical study. Fluorescence properties of thiazolylcoumarin derivatives were studied in DMF, ethanol, and ethyl acetate to visualize the solvent effect on the emitting ability of thiazolylcoumarin derivatives.
