The Preparation of Electrolyte Hydrogels with the Water Solubilization of Polybenzoxazine

Polybenzoxazine (PBZ) exhibits excellent heat resistance, and PBZ derivatives have been designed and synthesized to achieve high performance. However, the application range of PBZ is limited by the strong interactions between molecular chains and its low solubility in organic solvents, thereby limiting its processability. This study focused on the benzoxazine structure as the molecular backbone of new hydrogel materials that can be applied as electrolyte materials and prepared functional gel materials. Here, we prepared hydrogels by water-solubilizing PBZ derivatives, which typically exhibit low solubility in organic solvents. Although studies on the hydrophilization of PBZ and its complexation with hydrophilic polymers have been conducted, no studies have been performed on the hydrogelation of PBZ. First, the phenol in the organic solvent-insoluble PBZ thin film obtained after the thermal ring-opening polymerization of the monomer was transformed into sodium phenoxide by immersion in a NaOH aqueous solution to water-solubilize it and obtain a hydrogel thin film. Although the hydrogel thin film exhibited low mechanical strength, a free-standing hydrogel film with improved strength was obtained through the double network gelation method with an acrylamide monomer system. The physical properties of the polymer composite hydrogel thin film were evaluated. The ionic conductivity of the hydrogel thin films was in the order of 10-4 S cm-1, indicating the potential of PBZ as an electrolyte hydrogel material. However, improving its ionic conductivity will be undertaken in future studies.

Renal tissue engineering for regenerative medicine using polymers and hydrogels

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing worldwide problem, leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Current treatments for ESRD include haemodialysis and kidney transplantation, but both are deemed inadequate since haemodialysis does not address all other kidney functions, and there is a shortage of suitable donor organs for transplantation. Research in kidney tissue engineering has been initiated to take a regenerative medicine approach as a potential treatment alternative, either to develop effective cell therapy for reconstruction or engineer a functioning bioartificial kidney. Currently, renal tissue engineering encompasses various materials, mainly polymers and hydrogels, which have been chosen to recreate the sophisticated kidney architecture. It is essential to address the chemical and mechanical aspects of the materials to ensure they can support cell development to restore functionality and feasibility. This paper reviews the types of polymers and hydrogels that have been used in kidney tissue engineering applications, both natural and synthetic, focusing on the processing and formulation used in creating bioactive substrates and how these biomaterials affect the cell biology of the kidney cells used.

Catalyst-Free Electrochemical Sulfonylation of Organoboronic Acids

A simple and efficient electrochemical sulfonylation of organoboronic acids with sodium arylsulfinate salts has been reported for the first time. A variety of aryl, heteroaryl, and alkenylsulfones were obtained in good to excellent yields via a simple electrochemical sulfonylation of various arylboronic acids, heterocyclic boronic acids, or alkenylboronic acids with sodium arylsulfinate at room temperature in 5 h under the catalyst-free and additive-free conditions. A plausible mechanism has been proposed based on various radical-trapping and CV control experiments.

In Situ Monitored Vortex Fluidic-Mediated Protein Refolding/Unfolding Using an Aggregation-Induced Emission Bioprobe

Protein folding is important for protein homeostasis/proteostasis in the human body. We have established the ability to manipulate protein unfolding/refolding for β-lactoglobulin using the induced mechanical energy in the thin film microfluidic vortex fluidic device (VFD) with monitoring as such using an aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen), TPE-MI. When denaturant (guanidine hydrochloride) is present with β-lactoglobulin, the VFD accelerates the denaturation reaction in a controlled way. Conversely, rapid renaturation of the unfolded protein occurs in the VFD in the absence of the denaturant. The novel TPE-MI reacts with exposed cysteine thiol when the protein unfolds, as established with an increase in fluorescence intensity. TPE-MI provides an easy and accurate way to monitor the protein folding, with comparable results established using conventional circular dichroism. The controlled VFD-mediated protein folding coupled with in situ bioprobe AIEgen monitoring is a viable methodology for studying the denaturing of proteins.

Hydrodynamic synthesis of Fe2O3@MoS2 0D/2D-nanocomposite material and its application as a catalyst in the glycolysis of polyethylene terephthalate

We report a fast and simple synthesis of Fe₂O₃@MoS₂ 0D/2D-nanocomposite material using a Taylor–Couette flow reactor. A Taylor–Couette flow with high shear stress and mixing characteristics was used for fluid dynamic exfoliation of MoS₂ and deposition of uniform Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles, resulting in a Fe₂O₃@MoS₂ in the form of 0D/2D-nanocomposite material. Using Taylor–Couette flow reactor, we could synthesize Fe₂O₃@MoS₂ 0D/2D-nanocomposite material at a rate higher than 1000 mg h⁻¹ which is much higher than previously reported production rate of 0.2–116.7 mg h⁻¹. The synthesis of Fe₂O₃@MoS₂ nanocomposite was achieved in an aqueous solution without thermal or organic solvent treatment. Exfoliated MoS₂ nanosheets show an average thickness of 2.6 ± 2.3 nm (<6 layers) and a lateral size of 490 ± 494 nm. Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles have an average size of 7.4 ± 3.0 nm. Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles on chemically and thermally stable MoS₂ nanosheets show catalytic activity in the glycolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). High conversion of PET (97%) and a high yield (90%) for bis(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) were achieved in a reaction time of 3 h at the reaction temperature of 225 °C.

High shear vortex fluidic morphologically controlled polysulfone formed under anhydrous conditions

Polysulfone (PSF) was prepared under anhydrous conditions in DMSO, under high shear in a vortex fluidic device (VFD) operating under confined mode thereby avoiding the use of chlorinated solvents, unlike in conventional batch processing.
