Aqueous Cu(ii) ion adsorption by amino-functionalized mesoporous silica KIT-6

Modified Halloysite as an Adsorbent for the Removal of Cu(II) Ions and Reactive Red 120 Dye from Aqueous Solutions

The adsorption of copper ions and Reactive Red 120 azo dye (RR-120) as models of water pollutants on unmodified halloysite (H-NM), as well as halloysites modified with sulfuric acid (H-SA) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (H-APTES), was investigated. The results showed that adsorption of both the adsorbates was pH-dependent and increased with the increase in halloysite dosage. The adsorption kinetics were evaluated and the results demonstrated that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherms of Cu(II) ions and RR-120 dye on the halloysites were described satisfactorily by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities for the Cu(II) ions were 0.169, 0.236, and 0.507 mmol/g, respectively, for H-NM, H-SA, and H-APTES indicating that the NH2-functionalization rather than the surface area of the adsorbents was responsible for the enhanced adsorption. The adsorption capacities for RR-120 dye were found to be 9.64 μmol/g for H-NM, 75.76 μmol/g for H-SA, and 29.33 μmol/g for H-APTES. The results demonstrated that APTES-functionalization and sulfuric acid activation are promising modifications, and both modified halloysites have good application potential for heavy metals as well as for azo dye removal.

The Remediation of Dysprosium-Containing Effluents Using Cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis and Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Dysprosium is one of the most critical rare earth elements for industry and technology. A comparative study was carried out to assess the biosorption capacity of cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis and yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae toward dysprosium ions. The effect of experimental parameters such as pH, dysprosium concentration, time of contact, and temperature on the biosorption capacity was evaluated. Biomass before and after dysprosium biosorption was analyzed using neutron activation analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. For both biosorbents, the process was quick and pH-dependent. The maximum removal of dysprosium using Spirulina platensis (50%) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (68%) was attained at pH 3.0 during a one-hour experiment. The adsorption data for both biosorbents fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, whereas the kinetics of the process followed the pseudo-second-order and Elovich models. The maximum biosorption capacity of Spirulina platensis was 3.24 mg/g, and that of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was 5.84 mg/g. The thermodynamic parameters showed that dysprosium biosorption was a spontaneous process, exothermic for Saccharomyces cerevisiae and endothermic for Spirulina platensis. Biological sorbents can be considered an eco-friendly alternative to traditional technologies applied for dysprosium ion recovery from wastewater.

Physicochemical Properties and Application of Silica-Doped Biochar Composites as Efficient Sorbents of Copper from Tap Water

This article concerns research on new sorption materials based on silica-doped activated carbon. A two-stage synthesis involved pyrolysis of plant material impregnated in a water glass solution, followed by hydrothermal activation of the pyrolysate in KOH solution. The resulting composite can be used as a sorbent in drinking water filters. The proposed method of synthesis enables the design of materials with a surface area of approximately 150 m²·g^-1, whose chemical composition and structure were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The sorption properties of the obtained materials were determined relative to copper ions using the batch experiment method. The optimal operating parameters of the obtained materials relative to copper ions are T = 313.15 K, pH = 5, S:L ratio = 4 g·dm^-3 and t = 120 min. The research shows that the sorption kinetics of copper ions can be described by a pseudo-second-order model. The plotted copper(II) sorption isotherm clearly indicates the Langmuir model. Under optimal conditions, the maximum sorption of copper ions was 37.74 mg·g^-1, which is a satisfactory result and confirms the possibility of using the obtained material in drinking water filters.

Synthesis of Mesoporous Silica Adsorbent Modified with Mercapto-Amine Groups for Selective Adsorption of Cu2+ Ion from Aqueous Solution

In a sol-gel co-condensation, a mesoporous silica hybrid integrated with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (TMPSH) was prepared and then reacted with allylamine via a post-surface functionalization approach. Approximately 15 mol% of TMSPSH was introduced into the mesoporous silica pore walls along with tetraethyl orthosilicate. The mercapto ligands in the prepared mesoporous silica pore walls were then reacted with allylamine (AM) to form the mercapto-amine-modified mesoporous silica adsorbent (MSH@MA). The MSH@MA NPs demonstrate highly selective adsorption of copper (Cu²⁺) ions (~190 mg/g) with a fast equilibrium adsorption time (30 min). The prepared adsorbent shows at least a five times more efficient recyclable stability. The MSH@MA NPs adsorbent is useful for selective adsorption of Cu²⁺ ions.

Copper-Binding Properties of Polyethylenimine-Silica Nanocomposite Particles

Increasing demand for copper resources, accompanied by increasing pollution, has resulted in an urgent need for effective materials for copper binding and extraction. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is one of the strongest copper-chelating agents but is not suitable directly (as is) for most applications due to its high solubility in water. PEI-based composite materials show potential as efficient and practical alternatives. In the present work, the interaction of copper ions with PEI-silica nanocomposite particles and precursor PEI microgels (as a reference) is investigated. It is hypothesized that the main driving force of the reaction is chelation of copper ions by amino groups in the PEI network. The presence of silica in the PEI-silica composites was shown to increase the copper-binding capacity in comparison with the parent microgel. The copper-binding behavior of etched (PEI-free "ghost") composite particles in comparison with the original composites and microgel particles shows that silica nanoparticles in the composite structure increase the number of copper-binding sites in the PEI network rather than adsorbing copper themselves. PEI-silica composites can be easily recycled after copper adsorption by simply washing in 1 M nitric acid, which results in complete copper extraction. Employing this recovery method, PEI-silica composite particles can be used for multiple, efficient cycles of copper removal and extraction.

In situ Functionalized Mesoporous Silicas for Sustainable Remediation Strategies in Removal of Inorganic Pollutants from Contaminated Environmental Water

Low-cost mesoporous silicas of the SBA-15 family were prepared, aimed for removal of a broad spectrum of both cationic and anionic forms of hazardous metal pollutants (Cr(III, VI), Mn(II, VII), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II)) from environmental water. Series of mono- and bifunctional materials with immobilized ethylenediaminetriacetic acid (EDTA), primary amine (NH₂), and quaternary ammonium (QAS) groups were prepared in a cost-efficient one-step synthesis using two silica sources, low-cost sodium metasilicate (Na₂SiO₃ 9H₂O) and the conventional source-tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The functionalized SBA-15 samples obtained from both silica sources were highly ordered, as evidenced by TEM and SAXS data. All obtained materials were mesoporous with high surface area values of up to 745 m²/g, pore volumes from 0.99 to 1.44 cm³/g, and narrow pore distributions near 7 nm. The adsorption affinity of the EDTA-functionalized samples followed the common order Pb(II)> Cd(II)> Cu(II)> Cr(III)> Mn(II), which could be explained based on the Pearson theory. The highest adsorption capacities were observed for samples functionalized by EDTA groups using TEOS for synthesis (TEOS/EDTA): 195.6 mg/g for Pb(II), 111.2 mg/g for Cd(II), 58.7 mg/g for Cu(II), 57.7 mg/g for Cr(III), and 49.4 mg/g for Mn(II). Moreover, organic matter (humic acid up to 10 mg/L) and inorganic (Na(I), K(I), Mg(II), Ca(II), etc) macrocomponents present in environmental water had almost negligible effect on the removal of these cations. The NaSi/EDTA/NH₂ sample revealed a better selectivity compared to the NaSi_/NH₂ sample towards such species as Cr(III), Mn(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II). The chromate-ions uptake at pH 7.5 by the TEOS/QAS sample turned practically unaffected by the presence of doubly charged anions (CO₃ ^2-, SO₄ ^2-). The content of functional groups on the surface of MS decreased only slightly (∼1-5%) after several regeneration cycles. The complete desorption of all heavy metal ions can be achieved using 1 mol/L EDTA solution. Reusability tests demonstrated the complete stability of the adsorbent for at least five to six consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles with no decrease in its adsorption characteristics compared to those obtained by 0.05 mol/L HNO₃ treatments. The synthesized mesoporous materials were evaluated for removal of the heavy metal ions from drinking and different natural water samples, proving their potential as sustainable, effective, and cost-efficient adsorbents.

Efficient abatement of NOx emitted from automotive engines via adsorption on the Ba-CMK-3 adsorbents

The Ba-CMK-3(x) (x was the Ba(NO₃)₂:CMK-3 mass ratio and equals to 5, 10, and 15 wt%) samples were prepared by the incipient impregnation method, which were used for the adsorption of NO + O₂ at room temperature. The samples were characterized by the XRD, BET, TEM, TPD, TG, and DRIFTS techniques. The results showed that the CMK-3 and Ba-CMK-3(x) samples possessed an ordered two-dimensional hexagonal mesoporous structure, and Ba was uniformly dispersed on the surface of CMK-3. After Ba doping, the surface areas and pore size distributions of the Ba-CMK-3(x) samples were altered due to the synergistic effect of partial blocking of the channels by Ba and partial etching of the carbon materials by O₂ produced from Ba(NO₂)₃ decomposition at high temperatures. The sequence in NO adsorption capacity was Ba-CMK-3(10) (108.1 ± 0.55 mg/g) > Ba-CMK-3(15) (106.2 ± 0.72 mg/g) > Ba-CMK-3(5) (102.3 ± 1.33 mg/g) > CMK-3(88.8 ± 1.15 mg/g), with the Ba-CMK-3(10) sample showing the best (NO + O₂) adsorption performance. We proposed the two main adsorption pathways in the process of NO adsorption: (i) NO reacted with O₂ to form NO₂, part of NO₂ were weakly adsorbed on the surface hydroxyl groups, part of NO₂ were adsorbed to form the nitrite and nitrate species, and the left NO₂ was disproportionated to the NO, NO₂^-, and NO₃^- species; and (ii) NO was directly oxidized to the NO₂^- species by the oxygen-containing functional groups in carbon, and then some of the NO₂^- species were transformed to the NO₃^- species directly or via disproportionation. The regeneration efficiencies of the Ba-CMK-3(x) samples were slightly inferior to that of the CMK-3 sample.
