Personal Thermoregulation by Moisture-Engineered Materials

Personal thermal management can effectively manage the skin microenvironment, improve human comfort, and reduce energy consumption. In personal thermal-management technology, owing to the high latent heat of water evaporation in wet-response textiles, heat- and moisture-transfer coexist and interact with each other. In the last few years, with rapid advances in materials science and innovative polymers, humidity-sensitive textiles have been developed for personal thermal management. However, a large gap exists between the conceptual laboratory-scale design and actual textile. Here, moisture-responsive textiles based on flap opening and closing, those based on yarn/fiber deformation, and sweat-evaporation regulation based on textile design for personal thermoregulation are reviewed, and the corresponding mechanisms and research progress are discussed. Finally, the existing engineering and scientific limitations and future developments are considered to resolve the existing issues and accelerate the practical application of moisture-responsive textiles and related technologies.

Superior Unidirectional Water Transport and Mechanically Stable 3D Orthogonal Woven Fabric for Human Body Moisture and Thermal Management

Unidirectional water transport performance is vital for maintaining human thermal and wet comfort in the field of garment materials. In this work, a 3D orthogonal woven fabric (3DOWF) with excellent one-way transport capacity and mechanical properties is developed via 3D weaving and plasma treatment. The 3DOWF consists of polyester yarns (first layer), cotton yarns (second layer), and viscose yarns (third layer) with successively enhanced water absorption capacity. This allows droplets to penetrate spontaneously from the hydrophobic layer to the hydrophilic layer but not vice versa. Moreover, the Coolmax yarn with the core suction effect in the Z-direction and the plasma-treated polyester of the 3DOWF are shown to efficiently speed up the water transport process. In particular, the water penetration rate of the 3DOWF reaches 25 µl s^-1 . In turn, the surface temperature after water absorption is increased by 2.6 °C compared with the cotton fabric, while the tensile strengths in the weft and warp directions of the 3DOWF are 49.62 and 18 MPa, respectively. These values represent the best insulation and mechanical characteristics thus far reported among unidirectional water transport fabrics. Therefore, the 3DOWF has great potential for use in watchbands, backpack belts, insoles, and other functional textiles.

Moisture-Wicking and Solar-Heated Coaxial Fibers with a Bark-like Appearance for Fabric Comfort Management

Maintaining the human body's comfort is a predominant requirement of functional textiles, but there are still considerable drawbacks to design an intelligent textile with proper moisture absorption and evaporation properties. Herein, we develop moisture-wicking and solar-heated coaxial fibers with a bark-like appearance for fabric comfort management. The cortex layer of coaxial fibers can absorb moisture via the synergistic effect of the hierarchical roughness and the hydrophilic polymeric matrix. The core layer containing zirconium carbide nanoparticles can assimilate energy from the body and sunlight, which raises the surface temperature of the material and accelerates moisture evaporation. The resulting coaxial fiber-based membrane exhibits an excellent droplet diffusion radius of 2.73 cm, an excellent wicking height of 6.97 cm, and a high surface temperature of 61.7 °C which is radiated by simulated sunlight. Moreover, the designed fabric also exhibits a significant UV protection factor of 2000. Overall, the successful synthesis of such fascinating fibrous membranes enables the rapid removal of sweat from the human body textile, providing a suitable and comfortable microenvironment for the human body.
