Solar thermochemical CO2 splitting with doped perovskite LaCo0.7Zr0.3O3: thermodynamic performance and solar-to-fuel efficiency

A Review of Oxygen Carrier Materials and Related Thermochemical Redox Processes for Concentrating Solar Thermal Applications

Redox materials have been investigated for various thermochemical processing applications including solar fuel production (hydrogen, syngas), ammonia synthesis, thermochemical energy storage, and air separation/oxygen pumping, while involving concentrated solar energy as the high-temperature process heat source for solid-gas reactions. Accordingly, these materials can be processed in two-step redox cycles for thermochemical fuel production from H₂O and CO₂ splitting. In such cycles, the metal oxide is first thermally reduced when heated under concentrated solar energy. Then, the reduced material is re-oxidized with either H₂O or CO₂ to produce H₂ or CO. The mixture forms syngas that can be used for the synthesis of various hydrocarbon fuels. An alternative process involves redox systems of metal oxides/nitrides for ammonia synthesis from N₂ and H₂O based on chemical looping cycles. A metal nitride reacts with steam to form ammonia and the corresponding metal oxide. The latter is then recycled in a nitridation reaction with N₂ and a reducer. In another process, redox systems can be processed in reversible endothermal/exothermal reactions for solar thermochemical energy storage at high temperature. The reduction corresponds to the heat charge while the reverse oxidation with air leads to the heat discharge for supplying process heat to a downstream process. Similar reversible redox reactions can finally be used for oxygen separation from air, which results in separate flows of O₂ and N₂ that can be both valorized, or thermochemical oxygen pumping to absorb residual oxygen. This review deals with the different redox materials involving stoichiometric or non-stoichiometric materials applied to solar fuel production (H₂, syngas, ammonia), thermochemical energy storage, and thermochemical air separation or gas purification. The most relevant chemical looping reactions and the best performing materials acting as the oxygen carriers are identified and described, as well as the chemical reactors suitable for solar energy absorption, conversion, and storage.

Dataset of theoretical multinary perovskite oxides

Perovskite oxides (ternary chemical formula ABO₃) are a diverse class of materials with applications including heterogeneous catalysis, solid-oxide fuel cells, thermochemical conversion, and oxygen transport membranes. However, their multicomponent (chemical formula [Formula: see text]) chemical space is underexplored due to the immense number of possible compositions. To expand the number of computed [Formula: see text] compounds we report a dataset of 66,516 theoretical multinary oxides, 59,708 of which are perovskites. First, 69,407 [Formula: see text] compositions were generated in the a^-b⁺a^- Glazer tilting mode using the computationally-inexpensive Structure Prediction and Diagnostic Software (SPuDS) program. Next, we optimized these structures with density functional theory (DFT) using parameters compatible with the Materials Project (MP) database. Our dataset contains these optimized structures and their formation (ΔH_f) and decomposition enthalpies (ΔH_d) computed relative to MP tabulated elemental references and competing phases, respectively. This dataset can be mined, used to train machine learning models, and rapidly and systematically expanded by optimizing more SPuDS-generated [Formula: see text] perovskite structures using MP-compatible DFT calculations.

Nanomaterials as catalysts for CO2 transformation into value-added products: A review

Carbon dioxide (CO₂₎ is the most important greenhouse gas (GHG), accounting for 76% of all GHG emissions. The atmospheric CO₂ concentration has increased from 280 ppm in the pre-industrial era to about 418 ppm, and is projected to reach 570 ppm by the end of the 21^st century. In addition to reducing CO₂ emissions from anthropogenic activities, strategies to adequately address climate change must include CO₂ capture. To promote circular economy, captured CO₂ should be converted to value-added materials such as fuels and other chemical feedstock. Due to their tunable chemistry (which allows them to be selective) and high surface area (which allows them to be efficient), engineered nanomaterials are promising for CO₂ capturing and/or transformation. This work critically reviewed the application of nanomaterials for the transformation of CO₂ into various fuels, like formic acid, carbon monoxide, methanol, and ethanol. We discussed the literature on the use of metal-based nanomaterials, inorganic/organic nanocomposites, as well as other routes suitable for CO₂ conversion such as the electrochemical, non-thermal plasma, and hydrogenation routes. The characteristics, steps, mechanisms, and challenges associated with the different transformation technologies were also discussed. Finally, we presented a section on the outlook of the field, which includes recommendations for how to continue to advance the use of nanotechnology for conversion of CO₂ to fuels.
