Insights on updates in sodium alginate/MXenes composites as the designer matrix for various applications: A review

Advancements in two-dimensional materials, particularly MXenes, have spurred the development of innovative composites through their integration with natural polymers such as sodium alginate (SA). Mxenes exhibit a broad specific surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and an abundance of surface terminations, which can be combined with SA to maximize the synergistic effect of the materials. This article provides a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art techniques in the fabrication of SA/MXene composites, analyzing the resulting structural and functional enhancements with a specific focus on advancing the design of these composites for practical applications. A detailed exploration of SA/MXene composites is provided, highlighting their utility in various sectors, such as wearable electronics, wastewater treatment, biomedical applications, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. The review identifies the unique advantages conferred by incorporating MXene in these composites, examines the current challenges, and proposes future research directions to understand and optimize these promising materials thoroughly. The remarkable properties of MXenes are emphasized as crucial for advancing the performance of SA-based composites, indicating significant potential for developing high-performance composite materials.

Exploration of Dual Ionic Cross-Linked Alginate Hydrogels Via Cations of Varying Valences towards Wound Healing

This study explored the synergistic effects of simultaneously using calcium and gallium cations in the cross-linking of alginate, detailing its effects on the characteristics of alginate compared to its single cation counterparts. The primary goal is to determine if there are any synergistic effects associated with the utilisation of multiple multivalent cations in polymer cross-linking and whether or not it could therefore be used in pharmaceutical applications such as wound healing. Given the fact divalent and trivalent cations have never been utilised together for cross-linking, an explanation for the mode of binding that occurs between the alginate and the cations during the cross-linking process and how it may affect the future applications of the polymer has been investigated. The calcium gallium alginate polymers were able to retain the antibacterial effects of gallium within the confines of the polymer matrix, possessing superior rheological properties, 6 times that of pure calcium and pure gallium, coupled with an improved swelling capacity that is 4 times higher than that of gallium alginate.

Ions-induced gelation of alginate: Mechanisms and applications

Alginate is an important natural biopolymer and has been widely used in the food, biomedical, and chemical industries. Ca²⁺-induced gelation is one of the most important functional properties of alginate. The gelation mechanism is well-known as egg-box model, which has been intensively studied in the last five decades. Alginate also forms gels with many other monovalent, divalent or trivalent cations, and their gelation can possess different mechanisms from that of Ca²⁺-induced gelation. The resulted gels also exhibit different properties that lead to various applications. This study is proposed to summarize the gelation mechanisms of alginate induced by different cations, mainly including H⁺, Ca²⁺, Ba²⁺, Cu²⁺, Sr²⁺, Zn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Al³⁺, and Fe³⁺. The mechanism of H⁺-induced gelation of alginate mainly depends on the protonation of carboxyl groups. Divalent ions-induced gelation of alginate show different selection towards G, M, and GM blocks. Trivalent ions can bind to carboxyl groups of uronates with no selection. The properties and applications of these ionotropic alginate gels are also discussed. The knowledge gained in this study would provide useful information for the practical applications of alginate.

In vitro kinetic release study of ketoprofen enantiomers from alginate metal complexes

Background

To explore the release behavior of ketoprofen enantiomers from alginate-metal-complexes. Five mathematical models of drug release kinetics were investigated.

Results

Beads of alginate-metal complexes, loaded with racemic ketoprofen, were prepared by the ionotropic method. Divalent (Ca, Ba, Zn) and trivalent (Fe, Al) metals were used in the preparation of single-metal and mixed-metal alginate complexes. In vitro release experiments were carried out in an aqueous phosphate buffer medium at pH = 7.4. The concentrations of ketoprofen released enantiomers were determined using chiral HPLC technique. The obtained data were used to simulate the release kinetic of ketoprofen enantiomers using various mathematical models. The Korsmeyer-Peppas model was the best fit for Ca, Al, and Fe beads. Moreover, alginate-iron beads tend to release the drug faster than all other cases. In contrast, the drug release for alginate-barium complex was the slowest. The presence of barium in alginate mixed-metal complexes reduced ketoprofen release in the case of Fe and Zn, while it increased the release in the case of Al complex.

Conclusion

In all the studied cases, ketoprofen showed very slow release for both enantiomers over a period exceeded 5 h (10 days in some cases). The release rate modification is possible using different multivalent metals, and it is also feasible by using two different metals for congealing either consecutively or simultaneously.
