Cheap, facile, and upscalable activated carbon-based photothermal layers for solar steam generation

Dual-functional natural rubber latex foam composites for solar-driven clean water production and heavy metal decontamination

Solar steam generation (SSG) offers a sustainable approach to fresh water production. Herein, a novel dual-functional natural rubber/carbon black composite foam evaporator is presented for a cost-efficient SSG system that both produces fresh water and eliminates heavy metals present in the water. The composite foam is produced using the Dunlop process, and in its optimized form, it absorbed >96 % of sunlight. The foam evaporator exhibited a thermal conductivity of 0.052 W/m⋅K, a water evaporation rate of 1.40 kg/m2/h, converted 83.38 % of light to heat under 1 sun irradiation, and showed outstanding stability. The technology required to produce this composite foam is already available to make large-scale production feasible, while the natural raw materials are abundant. On the basis of its performance qualities, the rubber foam composite appears to be an excellent candidate for application as a viable solar absorber for SSG to produce fresh, clean water for commercial purposes.

A novel TiO2-x/TiN@ACB composite for synchronous photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and water photothermal evaporation under visible/infrared light illumination

Relatively large band-gap, fast charge carriers recombination, and mono-functionality of photocatalytic materials are still representing stumbling hurdles against their optimal usage for water cleaning. Herein, a novel black titanium oxide/plasmonic titanium nitride@activated coconut biochar (TiO2-x/TiN@ACB) composite was designed to have both photocatalytic and photothermal functions. Intermediate states of black TiO2-x, plasmonic effect of TiN, and high electrons (e-) capacity of biochar enhanced band-gap narrowing, light absorbance extension, and charge carriers separation respectively. Black TiO2-x and plasmonic TiN sensitization via visible/infrared (Vis/IR) portion of photonic spectrum in addition to the confirmed close contact of composite constituents explained the demonstrated major role of e- in photocatalytic mechanism through efficient excitation and facile transfer. Thanks to black photocatalytic semiconductor and carbonic materials for their ultimate photons harnessing and efficient photothermal conversion where the composite exhibited a remarkable photothermal water evaporation upon Vis/IR illumination as well. TiO2-x/TiN@ACB composite revealed 92.8 and 89.7% photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and water evaporation efficiencies up to 92.9 and 51.1% upon IR and Vis light illumination respectively. This study proposes a new approach for efficient water cleaning by coupling of oxygen deficient and plasmonic semiconductors supported on naturally derived carbonic material as a broad spectrum harvester and bi-functional photocatalytic and photothermal material.

Inhibition of Phenol from Entering into Condensed Freshwater by Activated Persulfate during Solar-Driven Seawater Desalination

Recently, solar-driven seawater desalination has received extensive attention since it can obtain considerable freshwater by accelerating water evaporation at the air-water interface through solar evaporators. However, the high air-water interface temperature can cause volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to enter condensed freshwater and result in water quality safety risk. In this work, an antioxidative solar evaporator, which was composed of MoS₂ as the photothermal material, expandable polyethylene (EPE) foam as the insulation material, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) plate as the corrosion resistant material, and fiberglass membrane (FB) as the seawater delivery material, was fabricated for the first time. The activated persulfate (PS) methods, including peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxodisulfate (PDS), were applied to inhibit phenol from entering condensed freshwater during desalination. The distillation concentration ratio of phenol (R_D) was reduced from 76.5% to 0% with the addition of sufficient PMS or PDS, which means that there was no phenol in condensed freshwater. It was found that the Cl^- is the main factor in activating PMS, while for PDS, light, and heat are the dominant. Compared with PDS, PMS can make full utilization of the light, heat, Cl^- at the evaporator's surface, resulting in more effective inhibition of the phenol from entering condensed freshwater. Finally, though phenol was efficiently removed by the addition of PMS or PDS, the problem of the formation of the halogenated distillation by-products in condensed freshwater should be given more attention in the future.

Rapid Fabrication of Porous Photothermal Hydrogel Coating for Efficient Solar-Driven Water Purification

Cost management and scalable fabrication without sacrificing the purification performance are two critical issues that should be addressed before the practical commercial application of solar-driven evaporators. To address this challenge, we report a porous photothermal hydrogel coating prepared by mixing the raw materials of sawdust (SD), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), which was applied to undergo a blading-drying-rehydration process to prepare the evaporator. In the coating, the crystallized PVA gives the coating a solid skeleton and the sawdust endows the coating with a loose structure to sufficiently enhance the water transportation capacity. As a result, the evaporator coated with the hydrogel coating displays a high water transport rate and efficient evaporation performance along with excellent mechanical properties and stability. Water migrates vertically upward 5 cm within 4 minutes. The compressive stress of the rehydrated hydrogel coating reaches as high as 14.28 MPa under 80% strain. The water evaporation rate of the hydrogel coating-based evaporator reaches 1.833 kg m^-2 h^-1 corresponding to an energy efficiency of 83.29% under 1 sun irradiation. What is more, the hydrogel coating retains its excellent evaporation performance and stability after immersion in acid or alkali solution, ultrasound treatment, and long-time immersion in water. Under outdoor conditions, the water evaporation rate of the hydrogel coating-based evaporator is about 5.69 times higher than that of pure water. This study proposes a rapid, cost-effective, and scalable strategy for preparing a high-performance photothermal hydrogel coating that will find sustainable and practical application in solar-driven water purification.

Fe3O4/Diatomite-Decorated Cotton Evaporator for Continuous Solar Steam Generation and Water Treatment

Improving the evaporation rate of solar steam generation (SSG) has always been a research hotspot to solve the shortage of water resources. Using cotton, Fe₃O₄, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and diatomite (DM) as raw materials, DM/PVA/Fe₃O₄@cotton composites with both firmness and hydrophilicity were prepared. Fe₃O₄ has a wide range of light absorption characteristics and good photothermal conversion performance, and is an ideal photothermal conversion material. PVA enhances the adhesion between Fe₃O₄, cotton and DM and enhances the hardness of the sample and the internal porous structure. The existence of DM greatly improves the hydrophilicity of the sample, ensuring that the water in the lower layer can be continuously transported to the surface of the sample, and DM makes the surface of the sample rough, which reduces the reflection of sunlight and improves the efficiency of light heat conversion. Under one-sun irradiation, the temperature of the sample surface increases by 52.6 °C, the evaporation rate can reach 1.32 kg m^-2 h^-1 and the evaporation efficiency is 82.9%. Using this sample as the photothermal conversion layer of the SSG device, the removal rate of salt ions in seawater is more than 98% and the removal rate of heavy metal ions in sewage is close to 100%. This work provides a new idea and design method for SSG in the field of seawater desalination and sewage treatment.

Molecularly engineered carrier-free co-delivery nanoassembly for self-sensitized photothermal cancer therapy

BACKGROUND

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has been extensively investigated as a tumor-localizing therapeutic modality for neoplastic disorders. However, the hyperthermia effect of PTT is greatly restricted by the thermoresistance of tumor cells. Particularly, the compensatory expression of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) has been found to significantly accelerate the thermal tolerance of tumor cells. Thus, a combination of HSP90 inhibitor and photothermal photosensitizer is expected to significantly enhance antitumor efficacy of PTT through hyperthermia sensitization. However, it remains challenging to precisely co-deliver two or more drugs into tumors.

METHODS

A carrier-free co-delivery nanoassembly of gambogic acid (GA, a HSP90 inhibitor) and DiR is ingeniously fabricated based on a facile and precise molecular co-assembly technique. The assembly mechanisms, photothermal conversion efficiency, laser-triggered drug release, cellular uptake, synergistic cytotoxicity of the nanoassembly are investigated in vitro. Furthermore, the pharmacokinetics, biodistribution and self-enhanced PTT efficacy were explored in vivo.

RESULTS

The nanoassembly presents multiple advantages throughout the whole drug delivery process, including carrier-free fabrication with good reproducibility, high drug co-loading efficiency with convenient dose adjustment, synchronous co-delivery of DiR and GA with long systemic circulation, as well as self-tracing tumor accumulation with efficient photothermal conversion. As expected, HSP90 inhibition-augmented PTT is observed in a 4T1 tumor BALB/c mice xenograft model.

CONCLUSION

Our study provides a novel and facile dual-drug co-assembly strategy for self-sensitized cancer therapy.

Advances in photothermal nanomaterials for biomedical, environmental and energy applications

Materials that exhibit photothermal effect have attracted enormous research interests due to their ability to strongly absorb light and effectively transform it into heat for a wide range of applications in biomedical, environmental and energy related fields. The past decade has witnessed significant advances in the preparation of a variety of photothermal materials, mainly due to the emergence of many nano-enabled new materials, such as plasmonic metals, stoichiometric/non-stoichiometric semiconductors, and the newly emerging MXenes. These photothermal nanomaterials can be hybridized with other constituents to form functional hybrids or composites for achieving enhanced photothermal performance. In this review, we present the fundamental insight of inorganic photothermal materials, including their photothermal conversion mechanisms/properties as well as their potential applications in various fields. Emphasis is placed on strategic approaches for improving their light harvesting and photothermal conversion capabilities through engineering their nanostructured size, shape, composition, bandgap and so on. Lastly, the underlying challenges and perspectives for future development of photothermal nanomaterials are proposed.

High efficiency solar desalination and dye retention of plasmonic/reduced graphene oxide based copper oxide nanocomposites

Water desalination via solar-driven interfacial evaporation is one of the most essential technologies to limit the problem of global freshwater scarcity. Searching for a highly efficient, stable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective solar-absorber material that can collect the full solar spectrum is critically important for solar steam generation. This study reports the development of a new solar thermal evaporation system based on plasmonic copper oxide/reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The silver nanoparticles in the composite exhibit a very strong solar absorption. Also, rGO and CuO nanoparticles offer excellent thermal absorptivity. Polyurethane was used as the support and as a thermal insulator. Moreover, filter paper was used for fast water delivery to the surface of the solar absorber. Ag/CuO-rGO nanocomposite is manifested to be one of the most efficient solar-absorbers reported to date for solar desalination which exhibits an average 2.6 kg m-2 h-1 evaporation rate with solar thermal efficiency up to 92.5% under 1 sun irradiation. Furthermore, the composite has excellent stability and durability as it displays stable evaporation rates for more than 10 repeated cycles in use, with no significant decrease in the activity. Besides, the successful removal of various organic dyes from contaminated water is also revealed, resulting in the production of clean condensed freshwater. Finally, this work commences a new avenue of synthesizing cost-effective thermal absorbers based on metal oxides.
