Probing and Visualizing Interfacial Charge at Surfaces in Aqueous Solution

Surface charge density and distribution play an important role in almost all interfacial processes, influencing, for example, adsorption, colloidal stability, functional material activity, electrochemical processes, corrosion, nanoparticle toxicity, and cellular processes such as signaling, absorption, and adhesion. Understanding the heterogeneity in, and distribution of, surface and interfacial charge is key to elucidating the mechanisms underlying reactivity, the stability of materials, and biophysical processes. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) are highly suitable for probing the material/electrolyte interface at the nanoscale through recent advances in probe design, significant instrumental (hardware and software) developments, and the evolution of multifunctional imaging protocols. Here, we assess the capability of AFM and SICM for surface charge mapping, covering the basic underpinning principles alongside experimental considerations. We illustrate and compare the use of AFM and SICM for visualizing surface and interfacial charge with examples from materials science, geochemistry, and the life sciences.

Well-designed internal electric field from nano-ferroelectrics promotes formic acid oxidation on Pd

Pd-Based catalysts are considered the most efficient catalysts in direct formic acid fuel cells. However, the poisoning and dissolution of Pd in acidic systems limit its commercialization. Here, we propose an all-in-one solution for the anti-dissolution and anti-poisoning properties of palladium. A novel structured catalyst, Pd nanoparticles embedded in a carbon layer internally decorated with tourmaline nanoparticles (TNPs), is proposed for formic acid oxidation (FAO). The internal electric field strength of the catalysts is readily regulated by controlling the amount of TNPs. Remarkably, the prepared catalyst exhibits as high as 3.9 times mass activity (905 A g^-1) compared with the commercial Pd/C catalyst. The significant improvement in the electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst is mainly due to the polarized electric field of TNPs causing charge transfer from Pd to tourmaline, which weakens the O-H bond of HCOOH and the bond between Pd and CO_ad. Another advantage brought by the internal polarized electric field is that it facilitates water dissociation to produce OH_ad, thereby improving the anti-poisoning ability of the catalyst in acidic media. Moreover, the firmly anchored Pd nanoparticles can avoid dissolution and agglomeration during long-term use. 80.2% mass activity remained after the accelerated durability test.

Visualization of an Accelerated Electrochemical Reaction under an Enhanced Electric Field

Locally enhanced electric fields produced by high-curvature structures have been reported to boost the charge transport process and improve the relevant catalytic activity. However, no visual evidence has been achieved to support this new electrochemical mechanism. Here, accelerated electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reactions emitting light are visualized for the first time at the heterogeneous interfaces between microbowls and the supporting electrode surface. The simulation result shows that the electric intensity at the interface with a high curvature is 40-fold higher than that at the planar surface. Consequently, local high electric fields concentrate reactive species to the heterogeneous interfaces and efficiently promote the charge transport reactions, which directly leads to the enhancement of ECL emission surrounding the microbowls. Additionally, the potential to induce visual ECL from a ruthenium complex drops to 0.9 V, which further illustrates the promotion of an electrochemical reaction with the aid of an enhanced electric field. This important visualization of electric field boosted electrochemical reactions helps to establish the proposed electron transfer mechanism and provide an alternative strategy to improve electrocatalytic efficiency.
