Abstract
The addition of 2 equiv of the phosphaylide H2C═PPh3 to the dimethyl uranium metallocene Cp*2UMe2 (Cp* = η5-C5Me5) in toluene with gentle heating at 40 °C generates the phosphorano-stabilized bis(carbene) Cp*2U[C(H)PPh3]2 (1) in good yield. Characterization of 1 by X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals two short uranium-carbon bonds, ranging from 2.301(5) to 2.322(5) Å, consistent with the presence of U═C carbene-type bonds. Monitoring the reaction by NMR spectroscopy suggests that it proceeds through the intermediate formation of the methyl carbene complex Cp*2U[C(H)PPh3](Me) (1Int); however, prolonged heating of these solutions leads to the ortho-cyclometalated carbene species Cp*2U{κ2-[C(H)PPh2(C6H4)]} (2) via intramolecular C-H activation. Rapid conversion from 1 to 2 occurs within hours upon heating its toluene solutions to 100 °C. Preliminary reactivity studies of 1 show that it readily reacts with alcohols, such as HODipp (Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) and HOC(CF3)3, to give the mixed carbene alkoxide compounds Cp*2U[C(H)PPh3](OR) (R = Dipp (4Dipp), C(CF3)3 (5CF3)). In one case, the reaction of 1 with HODipp in the presence of adventitious water led to the formation of a few crystals of the terminal U(IV) oxo complex, [Ph3PCH3][Cp*2U(O)(ODipp)] (3oxo). The isolation of 1 marks the first instance of an unchelated, heteroatom-stabilized bis(carbene) complex of uranium that also provides an entryway to the synthesis of its monocarbene derivatives through protonolysis.

Abstract
The high stability of the + IVoxidation state limits thorium redox reactivity. Here we report the synthesis and the redox reactivity of two Th(IV) complexes supported by the arene-tethered tris(siloxide) tripodal ligands [(KOSiR2 Ar)3 -arene)]. The two-electron reduction of these Th(IV) complexes generates the doubly reduced [KTh((OSi(Ot Bu)2 Ar)3 -arene)(THF)2 ] (2OtBu ) and [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Th((OSiPh2 Ar)3 -arene)(THF)2 ](2Ph -crypt) where the formal oxidation state of Th is +II. Structural and computational studies indicate that the reduction occurred at the arene anchor of the ligand. The robust tripodal frameworks store in the arene anchor two electrons that become available at the metal center for the two-electron reduction of a broad range of substrates (N2 O, COT, CHT, Ph2 N2 , Ph3 PS and O2 ) while retaining the ligand framework. This work shows that arene-tethered tris(siloxide) tripodal ligands allow implementation of two-electron redox chemistry at the thorium center while retaining the ligand framework unchanged.

Abstract
Multimetallic-multielectron cooperativity plays a key role in the metal-mediated cleavage of N2 to nitrides (N3−). In particular, low-valent uranium complexes coupled with strong alkali metal reducing agents can lead to N2 cleavage, but often, it is ambiguous how many electrons are transferred from the uranium centers to cleave N2. Herein, we designed new dinuclear uranium nitride complexes presenting a combination of electronically diverse ancillary ligands to promote the multielectron transformation of N2. Two heteroleptic diuranium nitride complexes, [K{UIV(OSi(OtBu)3)(N(SiMe3)2)2}2(μ-N)] (1) and [Cs{UIV(OSi(OtBu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)] (3-Cs), containing different combinations of OSi(OtBu)3 and N(SiMe3)2 ancillary ligands, were synthesized. We found that both complexes could be reduced to their U(iii)/U(iv) analogues, and the complex, [K2{UIV/III(OSi(OtBu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)] (6-K), could be further reduced to a putative U(iii)/U(iii) species that is capable of promoting the 4e− reduction of N2, yielding the N24−complex [K3{UV(OSi(OtBu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)(μ-η2:η2-N2)], 7. Parallel N2 reduction pathways were also identified, leading to the isolation of N2 cleavage products, [K3{UVI(OSi(OtBu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)(

Abstract
The coordination of tBuNC and CO with the diarsenido complexes (C5 Me5 )2 An(η2 -As2 Mes2 ), An=Th, U, has been investigated. For the first time, a comparison between isostructural complexes of ThIV and UIV has been possible with CO; density functional calculations indicated an appreciable amount of π backbonding that originates from charge transfer from an actinide-arsenic sigma bond. The calculated CO stretching frequencies in the ThIV and UIV diarsenido complexes are consistent with the experimental measurements, both show large shifts to lower frequency. We demonstrate that the π backbonding is crucial to explaining the red shifts of CO frequency upon AnIV complex formation. Interestingly, this interaction essentially correlates to the parallel orientation of π*(C-O) orbitals relative to the An-As bond.

Abstract
To synthesize complexes with thorium-phosphorus multiple-bond character, reactions of (C5Me5)2Th[P(H)Mes]2 with monovalent alkali-metal bases, MN(SiMe3)2, as well as CuMes, have been investigated. The results with MN(SiMe3)2 are phosphinidiide complexes of the form {(C5Me5)2Th[μ2-P(Mes)][μ2-P(H)Mes]M(L)n}2 (M = Na, n = 0; M = K, L = THF, n = 1; M = Rb, L = THF, n = 1; M = Cs, L = Et2O, n = 1). With CuMes, the product is a Th2Cu3P5 heterometallic structure, {(C5Me5)2Th[(μ2-P(H)Mes)P(Mes)]Cu}2Cu[μ2-P(H)Mes]. All complexes have been characterized using heteronuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and their solid-state structure identified by X-ray crystallography. We also report the structure of {(C5Me5)2Th[(μ2-As(H)Mes)As(Mes)]Cu}2Cu[μ2-As(H)Mes] obtained from (C5Me5)2Th[As(H)Mes]2 with CuMes.

Abstract
The redox chemistry of uranium is dominated by single electron transfer reactions while single metal four-electron transfers remain unknown in f-element chemistry. Here we show that the oxo bridged diuranium(iii) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]2[{((Me3Si)2N)3U}2(μ-O)], 1, effects the two-electron reduction of diphenylacetylene and the four-electron reduction of azobenzene through a masked U(ii) intermediate affording a stable metallacyclopropene complex of uranium(iv), [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(η 2-C2Ph2){N(SiMe3)2}3], 3, and a bis(imido)uranium(vi) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(NPh)2{N(SiMe3)2}3], 4, respectively. The same reactivity is observed for the previously reported U(ii) complex [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U{N(SiMe3)2}3], 2. Computational studies indicate that the four-electron reduction of azobenzene occurs at a single U(ii) centre via two consecutive two-electron transfers and involves the formation of a U(iv) hydrazide intermediate. The isolation of the cis-hydrazide intermediate [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(N2Ph2){N(SiMe3)2}3], 5, corroborated the mechanism proposed for the formation of the U(vi) bis(imido) complex. The reduction of azobenzene by U(ii) provided the first example of a "clear-cut" single metal four-electron transfer in f-element chemistry.

Abstract
The activation of U-N multiple bonds in an imido analogue of the uranyl ion is accomplished by using a system that is very electron-rich with sterically encumbering ligands. Treating the uranium(VI) trans-bis(imido) UI2(NDIPP)2(THF)3 (DIPP = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl and THF = tetrahydrofuran) with tert-butyl(dimethylsilyl)amide (NTSA) results in a reduction and rearrangement to form the uranium(IV) cis-bis(imido) [U(NDIPP)2(NTSA)2]K2 (1). Compound 1 features long U-N bonds, pointing toward substantial activation of the N═U═N unit, as determined by X-ray crystallography and 1H NMR, IR, and electronic absorption spectroscopies. Computational analyses show that uranium(IV)-imido bonds in 1 are significantly weakened multiple bonds due to polarization toward antibonding and nonbonding orbitals. Such geometric control has important effects on the electronic structures of these species, which could be useful in the recycling of spent nuclear fuels.

Abstract
The reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) is rare, especially in one step, and not observed electrochemically as a one-wave, two-electron couple. Here, we demonstrate that reduction of the uranium(VI) bis(imido) complex, (C5Me5)2U[═N(4-OiPrC6H4)]2, is readily accomplished with Al(C5Me5), forming the bridging uranium(IV)/aluminum(III) imido complex (C5Me5)2U[μ2-N(4-OiPrC6H4)]2Al(C5Me5). The structure and bonding of the bridging imido complex is examined with electrochemical measurements in tandem with density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
For the first time, an actinide nitride clusterfullerene, U2N@Ih(7)-C80, is synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray single crystallography and multiple spectroscopic methods. U2N@Ih(7)-C80 is by far the first endohedral fullerene that violates the well-established tri-metallic nitride template for nitride clusterfullerenes. The novel UNU cluster features two UN bonds with uneven bond distances of 2.058(3) Å and 1.943(3) Å, leading to a rare unsymmetrical structure for the dinuclear nitride motif. The combined experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that the two uranium ions show different oxidation states of +4 and +5. Quantum-chemical investigation further reveals that the f1/f2 population dominantly induces a distortion of the UNU cluster, which leads to the unsymmetrical structure. A comparative study of U2X@C80 (X = C, N and O) reveals that the U–X interaction in UXU clusters can hardly be seen as being formed by classical multiple bonds, but is more like an anionic central ion Xq− with biased overlaps with the two metal ions, which decrease as the electronegativity of X increases. This study not only demonstrates the unique bonding variety of actinide clusters stabilized by fullerene cages, showing different bonding from that observed for the lanthanide analogs, it also reveals the electronic structure of the UXU clusters (X = C, N and O), which are of fundamental significance to understanding these actinide bonding motifs. A novel actinide cluster, UNU, is stabilized inside a C80 fullerene cage. The U(iv)NU(v) cluster features two UN bonds with uneven bond distances of 2.058(3) Å and 1.943(3) Å, leading to an unsymmetrical structure.![]()

Abstract
A new route to heterobimetallic lanthanide-coinage-metal complexes is disclosed. The selective insertion of organic substrates such as phenyl iso(thio)cyanate into the La-P bond of the primary phosphido complex (PN)2La(PHMes) (1) (with PN- = (N-(2-(diisopropylphosphanyl)-4-methylphenyl)-2,4,6-trimethylanilide) yields the phospha(thio)ureate complexes (PN)2La(OC(NPh)(PHMes)) (2) and (PN)2La(SC(NPh)(PHMes)) (3) with retention of the PH protons. Subsequent deprotonation of the phosphaureate complex 2 with potassium hexamethyldisilazide (KHMDS, K[N(SiMe3)2]) leads to the polymeric complex [K{(PN)2La(OC(NPh)(PMes))}]n (4). Complex 4 was found to be an excellent precursor for salt metathesis reactions with copper(I) and gold(I) chlorides supported by an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC, 5 and 6) or a cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC, 7 and 8). This resulted in the unprecedented formation of heterobimetallic lanthanum-coinage-metal complexes, containing the first example of a μ,κ2(O,N):κ1(P)-phosphaureate bridging ligand. For an alternative route to complex 8 a direct protonolysis protocol between a new basic gold(I) precursor, namely (MeCAAC)Au(HMDS), and 2 was also investigated. The complexes have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography (except for 8).
