Abstract
Acenaphthylene-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AN-PAHs) are noteworthy structural motifs for organic functional materials due to their non-alternant electronic structure, which increases electron affinity. However, the synthesis of AN-PAHs has traditionally required multiple sequential synthetic steps, limiting structural diversity. Herein, we present a tandem C-H penta- and hexaannulation reaction of aryl alkyl ketone with acetylenedicarboxylate. This integrated approach enhances overall efficiency and selectivity, marking a significant advancement in AN-PAH synthesis. Mechanistic studies unveil an orchestrated extension of five- and six-membered rings through C-H activation-annulation and Diels-Alder reaction. Additionally, the tandem annulation reaction can be performed stepwise, further validating the proposed mechanism and increasing the structural diversity of AN-PAHs.

Abstract
A bimetallic relay catalysis protocol for tandem allylic C-H amination and asymmetric [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement has been developed with the use of an achiral Pd0 catalyst and a chiral N,N'-dioxide-MgII complex in a one-pot operation. A series of anti-α-amino derivatives containing two stereogenic centers were prepared from readily available allylbenzenes and glycine pyrazolamide with good yields and high stereoselectivities. Moreover, the synthetic potential of this protocol was further demonstrated by the product transformations, and a catalytic cycle was proposed to illustrate the reaction process.

Abstract
Given the tremendous success of (p-cymene)RuII-catalyzed C-H activation over the past 20 years, the community has long been aware that the development of chiral η6-benzene (Ben) ligands should be a potent strategy for achieving the attractive but incredibly underdeveloped ruthenium(II)-catalyzed asymmetric C-H activation. However, it has rarely been achieved due to the severe difficulty in developing proper chiral Ben ligands. In particular, designing chiral Ben ligands by connecting a benzene fragment to a chiral framework including benzene rings remained an unsolved challenge until this effort. Here we present a novel class of axially chiral Ben ligands derived from readily available (S)-5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-octahydro-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol ((S)-H8-BINOL) in 4-8 steps. Notably, when coordinated with ruthenium, such chiral Ben ligand containing three benzene rings only forms one of the three possible isomeric BenRuII complexes. The related chiral BenRuII catalysts could effectively catalyze the asymmetric C-H activation of N-sulfonyl ketimines with alkynes, affording a range of chiral spirocyclic sultams in up to 99 % yield with up to >99 % ee. These catalysts are expected to find broad applications in future.

Abstract
The advancement of sustainable chemistry and changes in the economy are strongly intertwined. Reaction time, cost savings, moderate temperatures, and generation of the fewest byproducts are frequently achieved by using catalytic processes. Herein, we report the C-H olefination of imidazo[1,2a] pyridine carboxamides with various acrylates in the presence of Pd (OAc)2 with O2 as the oxidant in aqueous ethanol rather than using non-ecofriendly solvents. The C-H activation features most user-friendly reaction conditions, excellent yield as well as plenty substrate scope and applicable for C-H deuteriation of the corresponding heteroarenes with D2O. Experimental mechanistic studies indicate that C-H activation step succeeded after formation of tetra coordinated square planer Pd-substrate adduct.

Abstract
Efficient and streamlined synthetic methods that facilitate the rapid build-up of structurally diverse π-conjugated systems are of paramount importance in the quest for organic optoelectronic materials. Among these methods, transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions between two (hetero)arenes have emerged as a concise and effective approach for generating a wide array of bi(hetero)aryl and fused heteroaryl structures. This innovative approach bypasses challenges associated with substrate pre-activation processes, thereby allowing for the creation of frameworks that were previously beyond reach using conventional Ar-X/Ar-M coupling reactions. These inherent advantages have ushered in new design patterns for organic optoelectronic molecules that deviate from traditional methods. This ground-breaking approach enables the transcendence of the limitations of repetitive material structures, ultimately leading to the discovery of novel high-performance materials. In this Perspective, we provide an overview of recent advances in the development of organic optoelectronic materials through the utilization of transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions. We introduce several notable synthetic strategies in this domain, covering both directed and non-directed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling strategies, dual chelation-assisted strategy and directed ortho-C-H arylation/cyclization strategy. Additionally, we shed light on the role of oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions in the advancement of high-performance organic optoelectronic materials. Finally, we discuss the current limitations of existing protocols and offer insights into the future prospects for this field.

Abstract
As an important class of platform molecules, planar chiral ferrocene carbonyl compounds could be transformed into various functional groups offering facile synthesis of chiral ligands and catalysts. However, developing efficient and straightforward methods for accessing enantiopure planar chiral ferrocene carbonyl compounds, especially ferroceneformaldehydes, remains highly challenging. Herein, we report a rhodium(I)/phosphoramidite-catalyzed enantioselective C-H bond arylation of ferroceneformaldehydes. Readily available aryl halides such as aryl iodides, aryl bromides, and even aryl chlorides are suitable coupling partners in this transformation, leading to a series of planar chiral ferroceneformaldehydes in good yields and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 83% yield and >99% ee). The aldehyde group could be transformed into diverse functional groups smoothly, and enantiopure Ugi's amine and PPFA analogues could be synthesized efficiently. The latter was found to be a highly efficient ligand in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation reactions. Mechanistic experiments supported the formation of imine intermediates as the key step during the reaction.

Abstract
Herein, we report the first palladium/MPAA catalyzed enantioselective C-H activation/[4 + 1] annulation of diarylmethyltriflamide and olefins to construct chiral cis-1,3-disubstituted isoindoline derivatives. The use of a readily accessible mono-N-protected amino acid as a chiral ligand improves the efficiency and enantioselectivity of the catalytic transformation. The developed method provides access to both enantiomers of a product using either d or l-phenylalanine derivative as a chiral ligand facilitating the synthesis of both optically active 1,3-disubstituted isoindoline derivatives.

Abstract
Development of a novel strategy for the palladium-catalyzed selective meta-C-H activation of α-substituted cinnamates and their heterocyclic analogues with various alkenes using nitrile as a directing group (DG) has been described. Importantly, we introduced naphthoquinone, benzoquinones, maleimides and sulfolene as coupling partners in the meta-C-H activation reaction for the first time. Notably, allylation, acetoxylation and cyanation were also achieved through distal meta-C-H functionalization. This novel protocol also includes the coupling of various olefin-tethered bioactive molecules with high selectivity.

Abstract
The mechanism of the rhodium-catalyzed C-H alkenylation/directing group migration and [3+2] annulation of N-aminocarbonylindoles with 1,3-diynes has been investigated with DFT calculations. On the basis of mechanistic studies, we mainly focus on the regioselectivity of 1,3-diyne inserting into the Rh-C bond and the N-aminocarbonyl directing group migration involved in the reactions. Our theoretical study uncovers that the directing group migration undergoes a stepwise β-N elimination and isocyanate reinsertion process. As studied in this work, this finding is also applicable to other relevant reactions. Additionally, the role of Na+ versus Cs+ involved in the [3+2] cyclization reaction is also probed.

Abstract
Amide is one of the most widespread functional groups in organic and bioorganic chemistry, and it would be valuable to achieve stereoselective C(sp3 )-H functionalization in amide molecules. Palladium(II) catalysis has been prevalently used in the C-H activation chemistry in the past decades, however, due to the weakly-coordinating feature of simple amides, it is challenging to achieve their direct C(sp3 )-H functionalization with enantiocontrol by PdII catalysis. Our group has developed sulfoxide-2-hydroxypridine (SOHP) ligands, which exhibited remarkable activity in Pd-catalyzed C(sp2 )-H activation. In this work, we demonstrate that chiral SOHP ligands served as an ideal solution to enantioselective C(sp3 )-H activation in simple amides. Herein, we report an efficient asymmetric PdII /SOHP-catalyzed β-C(sp3 )-H arylation of aliphatic tertiary amides, in which the SOHP ligand plays a key role in the stereoselective C-H deprotonation-metalation step.

Abstract
The p-Cymene ruthenium(II) complex is one of the most widely used catalysts in C-H activation. However, enantioselective C-H activation promoted by arene ruthenium(II) complexes has not been realized until recently. The revealed strategies include intramolecular nitrene C-H insertion, the use of chiral transient directing groups, chiral carboxylic acid, relay catalysis, and chiral arene ligands. In this minireview, these advances are summarized and discussed in the hope of spurring further developments.

Abstract
N-heterocycles are ubiquitous in natural products, pharmaceuticals, organic materials, and numerous functional molecules. Among the current synthetic approaches, transition metal-catalyzed C–H functionalization has gained considerable attention in recent years due to its advantages of simplicity, high atomic economy, and the ready availability of starting materials. In the field of N-heterocycle synthesis via C–H functionalization, nickel has been recognized as one of the most important catalysts. In this review, we will introduce nickel-catalyzed intramolecular and intermolecular pathways for N-heterocycle synthesis from 2008 to 2021.

Abstract
A palladium(II)-catalyzed protocol for inactive β-C(sp3)-H bond functionalization has been first accomplished. The reaction proceeds through five-membered carbocycles for the formation of C-C bonds via the Pd(II)/Pd(IV) cycle. This reaction was carried out with various aryl iodides and benzothiazoles/benzoxazoles/benzimidazoles, which were well-tolerated in this reaction and successfully generated β-C(sp3)-H arylated products. Further implementation of this batch protocol to continuous flow by utilizing a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) capillary reactor enhanced the reaction efficiency and decreased the reaction time (18.4 min) as compared to batch conditions (8 h). Even on the gram scale, the process produced excellent yield with negligible diarylations. Functional group tolerance, a continuous-flow approach, and easy-to-handle reaction conditions make this inactive β-C(sp3)-H bond functionalization protocol very attractive.

Abstract
Development of chiral ligands is the most fundamental task in metal-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis. In the last 60 years, various kinds of ligands have been sophisticatedly developed. However, it remains a long-standing challenge to develop practically useful chiral η6 -arene ligands, thereby seriously hampering the asymmetric synthesis promoted by arene-metal catalysts. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a class of readily tunable, C2 -symmetric chiral arene ligands derived from [2.2]paracyclophane. Its ruthenium(II) complexes have been prepared and successfully applied in the enantioselective C-H activation to afford a series of axially chiral isoquinolones (up to 99 % yield and 96 % ee). This study not only lays chemists' longstanding doubts about whether it is possible to use chiral arene ligands to stereocontrol ruthenium(II)-catalyzed asymmetric C-H activation, but also opens up a new avenue to achieve asymmetric C-H activation.

Abstract
We report a Suzuki 2,2'-diarylation of the racemic 2,2'-diiodo-1,1'-binaphthyl which proceeds with deracemization via a pallada(IV)cyclic intermediate, induced by a simple chiral ligand─BINAP [2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1',-binaphthyl]. A systematic study of the reaction scope, using 45 arylboronic acids, reveals that the diarylated product is formed when meta- and/or para-substituted phenylboronic acids are functionalized with a substituent with the Hammett constant from -0.5 to +0.4. Multiparametric analysis accounting for the effect of geometry on the reactivity using Boltzmann-weighted Sterimol parameters and electronic effects described by Hammett descriptors shows that the enantioselectivity depends on steric effects only, with enhanced enantioselectivity observed for substituents with a larger length, wL, and reduced for substituents with a larger maximum width, wB5. We show that careful tuning of these parameters, with the aid of the presented mathematical model, can lead to excellent enantioselectivity. Additional factors that are investigated and found to affect the stereoselective course of the reaction include the reaction temperature, palladium source, palladium to ligand ratio, and the type of boronic acid derivative. During the chromatographic separation of diarylated products on an achiral silica gel, we observed a rare phenomenon: the diarylated products undergo self-disproportionation of enantiomers, with the major enantiomer being eluted first.

Abstract
The transient directing group (TDG) strategy allowed long awaited access to the direct β-C(sp3)-H functionalization of unmasked aliphatic aldehydes via palladium catalysis. However, the current techniques are restricted to terminal methyl functionalization, limiting their structural scopes and applicability. Herein, we report the development of a direct Pd-catalyzed methylene β-C-H arylation of linear unmasked aldehydes by using 3-amino-3-methylbutanoic acid as a TDG and 2-pyridone as an external ligand. Density functional theory calculations provided insights into the reaction mechanism and shed light on the roles of the external and transient directing ligands in the catalytic transformation.

Abstract
In the last decade, transition-metal-catalyzed direct C-H bond functionalization has been recognized as one of most efficient approaches for the derivatization of thioethers. Within this category, both mono- and bidentate-directing group strategies achieved the remote C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H functionalization of thioethers, respectively. This review systematically introduces the major advances and their mechanisms in the field of transition-metal-catalyzed remote C-H functionalization of thioethers from 2010 to 2021.

Abstract
An asymmetric allylic C-H functionalization has been developed by making use of transient chiral nucleophiles, as well as bimetallic synergistic catalysis with an achiral Pd0 catalyst and a chiral N,N'-dioxide-CoII complex. A variety of β-ketoesters and N-Boc oxindoles coupled with allylbenzenes and aliphatic terminal alkenes were well tolerated, furnishing the desired allylic alkylation products in high yields (up to 99 %) with excellent regioselectivities and enantioselectivities (up to 99 % ee).

Abstract
We highlight the reported developments of the palladium-catalyzed C-H activation and functionalization of the inactive/unreactive prochiral C(sp3)-H bonds of aliphatic and alicyclic compounds. There exist numerous classical methods for generating contiguous stereogenic centers in a compound with a high degree of stereocontrol. Along similar lines, the Pd(II)-catalyzed, directing group-aided functionalization of inactive prochiral/diastereotopic C(sp3)-H bonds have been exploited to accomplish the stereoselective construction of stereo-arrays in organic compounds. We present a concise discussion on how specific strategies consisting of Pd(II)-catalyzed, directing group-aided C(sp3)-H functionalization have been utilized to generate two or more stereogenic centers in aliphatic and alicyclic compounds.

Abstract
The functionalization of remote unactivated C(sp3)-H and the reaction selectivity are among the core pursuits for transition-metal catalytic system development. Herein, we report Pd-catalyzed γ-C(sp3)-H-selective alkylation and alkenylation with removable 7-azaindole as a directing group. Acid and base were found to be the decisive regulators for the selective alkylation and alkenylation, respectively, on the same single substrate under otherwise the same reaction conditions. Various acrylates were compatible for the formation of C(sp3)-C(sp3) and C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds. The alkenylation protocol could be further extended to acrylates with natural product units and α,β-unsaturated ketones. The preliminary synthetic manipulation of the alkylation and alkenylation products demonstrates the potential of this strategy for structurally diverse aliphatic chain extension and functionalization. Mechanistic experimental studies showed that the acidic and basic catalytic transformations shared the same six-membered dimer palladacycle.

Abstract
Enantioenriched, six-membered azacycles are essential structural motifs in many products of pharmaceutical or agrochemical interest. Here we report a simple and practical method for enantioselective assembly of tetrahydropyridines, which is paired to a kinetic resolution of α-branched allyltriflamides. The reaction consists of a formal (4+2) cycloaddition between the allylamine derivatives and allenes and is initiated by a palladium(II)-catalyzed C-H activation process. Both the chiral allylamide precursors and the tetrahydropyridine adducts were successfully obtained in high yields, with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee) and selectivity values of up to 127.
