Advances and challenges in designing active site environments in zeolites for Brønsted acid catalysis

Zeolites contain proton active sites in diverse void environments that stabilize the reactive intermediates and transition states formed in converting hydrocarbons and oxygenates to chemicals and energy carriers. The catalytic diversity that exists among active sites in voids of varying sizes and shapes, even within a given zeolite topology, has motivated research efforts to position and quantify active sites within distinct voids (synthesis-structure) and to link active site environment to catalytic behavior (structure-reactivity). This Feature Article describes advances and challenges in controlling the position of framework Al centers and associated protons within distinct voids during zeolite synthesis or post-synthetic modification, in identifying and quantifying distinct active site environments using characterization techniques, and in determining the influence of active site environments on catalysis. During zeolite synthesis, organic structure directing agents (SDAs) influence Al substitution at distinct lattice positions via intermolecular interactions (e.g., electrostatics, hydrogen bonding) that depend on the size, structure, and charge distribution of organic SDAs and their mobility when confined within zeolitic voids. Complementary post-synthetic strategies to alter intrapore active site distributions include the selective removal of protons by differently-sized titrants or unreactive organic residues and the selective exchange of framework heteroatoms of different reactivities, but remain limited to certain zeolite frameworks. The ability to identify and quantify active sites within distinct intrapore environments depends on the resolution with which a given characterization technique can distinguish Al T-site positions or proton environments in a given zeolite framework. For proton sites in external unconfined environments, various (post-)synthetic strategies exist to control their amounts, with quantitative methods to distinguish them from internal sites that largely depend on using stoichiometric or catalytic probes that only interact with external sites. Protons in different environments influence reactivity by preferentially stabilizing larger transition states over smaller precursor states and influence selectivity by preferentially stabilizing or destabilizing competing transition states of varying sizes that share a common precursor state. We highlight opportunities to address challenges encountered in the design of active site environments in zeolites by closely integrating precise (post-)synthetic methods, validated characterization techniques, well-defined kinetic probes, and properly calibrated theoretical models. Further advances in understanding the molecular details that underlie synthesis-structure-reactivity relationships for active site environments in zeolite catalysis can accelerate the predictive design of tailored zeolites for desired catalytic transformations.

Strength of London Dispersion Forces in Organic Structure Directing Agent-Zeolite Assemblies

Herein, we study the London dispersion forces between organic structure directing agents (OSDAs)-here tetraalkyl-ammonium or -phosphonium molecules-and silica zeolite frameworks (FWs). We demonstrate that the interaction energy for these dispersion forces is correlated to the number of H atoms in OSDAs, irrespective of the structures of OSDAs or FWs, and of variations in charges and thermal motions. All calculations considered-DFT-D3 and BOMD undertaken by us, and molecular mechanics from an accessible database-led to the same trend. The mean energy of these dispersion forces is ca. -2 kcal.mol-1 per H for efficient H-O contacts.

Double Unit-Cell Silicogermanate Nanosheets Developed by Salting-Out Mechanism for Biomass Conversion

Zeolite nanosheets with an extremely thin thickness featuring both unique pore systems and low diffusion resistance have the potential to achieve enhanced catalytic performance in the conversion of bulky molecular biomass. The preparation of unit-cell level nanosheets generally requires complex and costly multifunctional surfactants or an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA). Commercially available and environmentally friendly ionic liquids can also direct the structure of zeolite nanosheets by π-π stacking when these kinds of OSDA are used in large amount. Herein, we first report unit-cell-sized silicogermanate nanosheets of NS-IM-20 (UWY topology), 5 nm in thickness, which were synthesized at a relatively low ionic liquid concentration with the assistance of halide ion (Cl-). The Pd-loaded NS-IM-20 nanosheets with a hierarchical porosity and moderate acidity act as promising bifunctional catalysts for selective biomass conversion.

One-Pot Synthesis of CHA/ERI-Type Zeolite Intergrowth from a Single Multiselective Organic Structure-Directing Agent

We report the one-pot synthesis of a chabazite (CHA)/erionite (ERI)-type zeolite intergrowth structure characterized by adjustable extents of intergrowth enrichment and Si/Al molar ratios. This method utilizes readily synthesizable 6-azaspiro[5.6]dodecan-6-ium as the exclusive organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) within a potassium-dominant environment. High-throughput simulations were used to accurately determine the templating energy and molecular shape, facilitating the selection of an optimally biselective OSDA from among thousands of prospective candidates. The coexistence of the crystal phases, forming a distinct structure comprising disk-like CHA regions bridged by ERI-rich pillars, was corroborated via rigorous powder X-ray diffraction and integrated differential-phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC S/TEM) analyses. iDPC S/TEM imaging further revealed the presence of single offretite layers dispersed within the ERI phase. The ratio of crystal phases between CHA and ERI in this type of intergrowth could be varied systematically by changing both the OSDA/Si and K/Si ratios. Two intergrown zeolite samples with different Si/Al molar ratios were tested for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3, showing competitive catalytic performance and hydrothermal stability compared to that of the industry-standard commercial NH3-SCR catalyst, Cu-SSZ-13, prevalent in automotive applications. Collectively, this work underscores the potential of our approach for the synthesis and optimization of adjustable intergrown zeolite structures, offering competitive alternatives for key industrial processes.

GRAN3SAT: Creating Flexible Higher-Order Logic Satisfiability in the Discrete Hopfield Neural Network

One of the main problems in representing information in the form of nonsystematic logic is the lack of flexibility, which leads to potential overfitting. Although nonsystematic logic improves the representation of the conventional k Satisfiability, the formulations of the first, second, and third-order logical structures are very predictable. This paper proposed a novel higher-order logical structure, named G-Type Random k Satisfiability, by capitalizing the new random feature of the first, second, and third-order clauses. The proposed logic was implemented into the Discrete Hopfield Neural Network as a symbolic logical rule. The proposed logic in Discrete Hopfield Neural Networks was evaluated using different parameter settings, such as different orders of clauses, different proportions between positive and negative literals, relaxation, and differing numbers of learning trials. Each evaluation utilized various performance metrics, such as learning error, testing error, weight error, energy analysis, and similarity analysis. In addition, the flexibility of the proposed logic was compared with current state-of-the-art logic rules. Based on the simulation, the proposed logic was reported to be more flexible, and produced higher solution diversity.

Design of a Small Organic Template for the Synthesis of Self-Pillared Pentasil Zeolite Nanosheets

Zeolite nanosheets with excellent mass transfer are attractive, but their successful syntheses are normally resulted from a huge number of experiments. Here, we show the design of a small organic template for the synthesis of self-pillared pentasil (SPP) zeolite nanosheets from theoretical calculations in interaction energies between organic templates and pentasil zeolite skeletons. As expected, the SPP zeolite nanosheets with the thickness at 10-20 nm have been synthesized successfully. Characterizations show that the SPP zeolite nanosheets with about 90% MFI and 10% MEL structures have good crystallinity, the house-of-card morphology, large surface area, and fully four-coordinated aluminum species. More importantly, methanol-to-propylene tests show that the SPP zeolite nanosheets exhibit much higher propylene selectivity and longer reaction lifetime than conventional ZSM-5 zeolite. These results offer a good opportunity to develop highly efficient zeolite catalysts in the future.

Data-Driven Design of Biselective Templates for Intergrowth Zeolites

Zeolites are inorganic materials with wide industrial applications due to their topological diversity. Tailoring confinement effects in zeolite pores, for instance by crystallizing intergrown frameworks, can improve their catalytic and transport properties, but controlling zeolite crystallization often relies on heuristics. In this work, we use computational simulations and data mining to design organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) to favor the synthesis of intergrown zeolites. First, we propose design principles to identify OSDAs which are selective toward both end members of the disordered structure. Then, we mine a database of hundreds of thousands of zeolite-OSDA pairs and downselect OSDA candidates to synthesize known intergrowth zeolites such as CHA/AFX, MTT/TON, and BEC/ISV. The computationally designed OSDAs balance phase competition metrics and shape selectivity toward the frameworks, thus bypassing expensive dual-OSDA approaches typically used in the synthesis of intergrowths. Finally, we propose potential OSDAs to obtain hypothesized disordered frameworks such as AEI/SAV. This work may accelerate zeolite discovery through data-driven synthesis optimization and design.

The Role of Organic and Inorganic Structure-Directing Agents in Selective Al Substitution of Zeolite

Organic and inorganic structure-directing agents (SDAs) impact Al distributions in zeolite, but the insights into how SDAs manipulate Al distribution have not been elucidated yet. Herein, the roles of different SDAs such as cyclohexylamine (CHA), hexamethylenimine (HMI), and Na⁺ in selective Al substitution of MCM-49 zeolite are investigated comprehensively by multinuclear solid-state NMR. The results demonstrate that MCM-49 synthesized with HMI shows relatively more T₆ and T₇ Al, while more T₂ Al is observed using CHA. The formation of T₂ Al in both MCM-49(HMI) and MCM-49(CHA) is derived from Na⁺, while protonated HMIs show bias in incorporation of T₆ and T₇ Al. Most HMIs are occluded in protonated status, and about half of CHAs are occluded in nonprotonated status. The close spatial proximity between nonprotonated CHAs and Na⁺ synergistically promotes the formation of zeolite structure, leading to more Na⁺ ions occluded in the zeolite channel with preferential T₂ Al substitution.

Benchmarking binding energy calculations for organic structure-directing agents in pure-silica zeolites

Molecular modeling plays an important role in the discovery of organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) for zeolites. By quantifying the intensity of host-guest interactions, it is possible to select cost-effective molecules that maximize binding toward a given zeolite framework. Over the last few decades, a variety of methods and levels of theory have been used to calculate these binding energies. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on the best calculation strategy for high-throughput virtual screening undertakings. In this work, we compare binding affinities from density functional theory (DFT) and Dreiding force field calculations for 272 zeolite-OSDA pairs obtained from static and time-averaged simulations. Enabled by automation software, we show that Dreiding binding energies from the frozen pose method correlate best with DFT energies. They are also less sensitive to the choice of initial lattice parameters and optimization algorithms, as well as less computationally expensive than their time-averaged counterparts. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a broader exploration of the conformation space from molecular dynamics simulations does not provide significant improvements in binding energy trends over the frozen pose method despite being orders of magnitude more expensive. The code and benchmark data are open-sourced and provide robust and computationally efficient guidelines to calculating binding energies in zeolite-OSDA pairs.
