Defect-enabling zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks for energy and environmental remediation applications

This comprehensive review explores the diverse applications of defective zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) in energy and environmental remediation. Zr-MOFs have gained significant attention due to their unique properties, and deliberate introduction of defects further enhances their functionality. The review encompasses several areas where defective Zr-MOFs exhibit promise, including environmental remediation, detoxification of chemical warfare agents, photocatalytic energy conversions, and electrochemical applications. Defects play a pivotal role by creating open sites within the framework, facilitating effective adsorption and remediation of pollutants. They also contribute to the catalytic activity of Zr-MOFs, enabling efficient energy conversion processes such as hydrogen production and CO2 reduction. The review underscores the importance of defect manipulation, including control over their distribution and type, to optimize the performance of Zr-MOFs. Through tailored defect engineering and precise selection of functional groups, researchers can enhance the selectivity and efficiency of Zr-MOFs for specific applications. Additionally, pore size manipulation influences the adsorption capacity and transport properties of Zr-MOFs, further expanding their potential in environmental remediation and energy conversion. Defective Zr-MOFs exhibit remarkable stability and synthetic versatility, making them suitable for diverse environmental conditions and allowing for the introduction of missing linkers, cluster defects, or post-synthetic modifications to precisely tailor their properties. Overall, this review highlights the promising prospects of defective Zr-MOFs in addressing energy and environmental challenges, positioning them as versatile tools for sustainable solutions and paving the way for advancements in various sectors toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Dual Metalation in a Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework for Photocatalytic C-N Cross-Coupling Reactions

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising hosts in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we report a dual metalation strategy in a single two-dimensional-COF TpBpy for performing a variety of C-N cross-coupling reactions. [Ir(ppy)₂(CH₃CN)₂]PF₆ [ppy = 2-phenylpyridine], containing two labile CH₃CN groups, and NiCl₂ are used as iridium and nickel-metal precursors, respectively, for postsynthetic decoration of the TpBpy COF. Moving from the traditional approach, we focus on the COF-backbone host for visible-light-mediated nickel-catalyzed C-N coupling reactions. The controlled metalation and recyclability without deactivation of both catalytic centers are unique with respect to previously reported coupling strategies. We performed various photoluminescence, electrochemical, kinetic, and Hammett correlation studies to understand the salient features of the catalyst and reaction mechanism. Furthermore, theoretical calculations delineated the feasibility of electron transfer from the Ir center to the Ni center inside the confined pore of the TpBpy COF. The dual metal anchoring within the COF backbone prevented nickel-black formation. The developed protocol enables selective and reproducible coupling of a diverse range of amines (aryl, heteroaryl, and alkyl), carbamides, and sulfonamides with electron-rich, neutral, and poor (hetero) aryl iodides up to 94% isolated yield. The reaction can also be performed on a gram scale. Furthermore, to establish the practical implementation of this approach, we have applied the synthetic strategy for the late-stage diversification of the derivatives of ibuprofen, naproxen, gemfibrozil, helional, and amino acids. The methodology could also be applied to synthesize pharmacophore N,5-diphenyloxazol-2-amine and Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs, including flufenamic acid, flibanserin, and tripelennamine.

Insights into the Interaction between Immobilized Biocatalysts and Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Case Study of PCN-333

The immobilization of enzymes in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with preserved biofunctionality paves a promising way to solve problems regarding the stability and reusability of enzymes. However, the rational design of MOF-based biocomposites remains a considerable challenge as very little is known about the state of the enzyme, the MOF support, and their host-guest interactions upon immobilization. In this study, we elucidate the detailed host-guest interaction for MOF immobilized enzymes in the biointerface. Two enzymes with different sizes, lipase and insulin, have been immobilized in a mesoporous PCN-333(Al) MOF. The dynamic changes of local structures of the MOF host and enzyme guests have been experimentally revealed for the existence of the confinement effect to enzymes and van der Waals interaction in the biointerface between the aluminum oxo-cluster of the PCN-333 and the -NH2 species of enzymes. This kind of host-guest interaction renders the immobilization of enzymes in PCN-333 with high affinity and highly preserved enzymatic bioactivity.

Rotational Dynamics of an Amphidynamic Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework Determined by Dielectric Spectroscopy

A zirconium metal-organic framework with a difluorophenylene rotator bearing a permanent electric dipole of ∼3.2 D was synthesized, and its rotational motion was analyzed by temperature- and frequency-dependent broadband dielectric spectroscopy. While solid-state NMR confirms fast rotation qualitatively, the dissipation factors measured between 113 and 153 K suggested an activation energy E_a = 2.6 kcal/mol, but deviations from a single Debye relaxation suggested a dynamic process that cannot be accounted for by a well-defined potential with a single activation barrier. The dynamic heterogeneity of the dipolar rotor was confirmed by analysis in terms of a Cole-Cole relaxation, which suggested a mean barrier of ∼1.9 kcal/mol, with a heterogeneity that decreases as temperature increases. Based on the single-crystal structure, we propose that the kinetic heterogeneity results from a temperature-dependent potential where rotation motion is mediated by the escape of the rotator from an energy well created by a double Ph-H···F-Ph hydrogen bond.

Confinement-guided photophysics in MOFs, COFs, and cages

In this review, the dependence of the photophysical response of chromophores in the confined environments associated with crystalline scaffolds, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and molecular cages, has been carefully evaluated. Tunability of the framework aperture, cavity microenvironment, and scaffold topology significantly affects emission profiles, quantum yields, or fluorescence lifetimes of confined chromophores. In addition to the role of the host and its effect on the guest, the methods for integration of a chromophore (e.g., as a framework backbone, capping linker, ligand side group, or guest) are discussed. The overall potential of chromophore-integrated frameworks for a wide-range of applications, including artificial biomimetic systems, white-light emitting diodes, photoresponsive devices, and fluorescent sensors with unparalleled spatial resolution are highlighted throughout the review.

Interplay of structural dynamics and electronic effects in an engineered assembly of pentacene in a metal-organic framework

Charge carrier mobility is an important figure of merit to evaluate organic semiconductor (OSC) materials. In aggregated OSCs, this quantity is determined by inter-chromophoric electronic and vibrational coupling. These key parameters sensitively depend on structural properties, including the density of defects. We have employed a new type of crystalline assembly strategy to engineer the arrangement of the OSC pentacene in a structure not realized as crystals to date. Our approach is based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), in which suitably substituted pentacenes act as ditopic linkers and assemble into highly ordered π-stacks with long-range order. Layer-by-layer fabrication of the MOF yields arrays of electronically coupled pentacene chains, running parallel to the substrate surface. Detailed photophysical studies reveal strong, anisotropic inter-pentacene electronic coupling, leading to efficient charge delocalization. Despite a high degree of structural order and pronounced dispersion of the 1D-bands for the static arrangement, our experimental results demonstrate hopping-like charge transport with an activation energy of 64 meV dominating the band transport over a wide range of temperatures. A thorough combined quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics investigation identifies frustrated localized rotations of the pentacene cores as the reason for the breakdown of band transport and paves the way for a crystal engineering strategy of molecular OSCs that independently varies the arrangement of the molecular cores and their vibrational degrees of freedom.
