Structural Design of Single-Atom Catalysts for Enhancing Petrochemical Catalytic Reaction Process

Petroleum, as the "lifeblood" of industrial development, is the important energy source and raw material. The selective transformation of petroleum into high-end chemicals is of great significance, but still exists enormous challenges. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with 100% atom utilization and homogeneous active sites, promise a broad application in petrochemical processes. Herein, the research systematically summarizes the recent research progress of SACs in petrochemical catalytic reaction, proposes the role of structural design of SACs in enhancing catalytic performance, elucidates the catalytic reaction mechanisms of SACs in the conversion of petrochemical processes, and reveals the high activity origins of SACs at the atomic scale. Finally, the key challenges are summarized and an outlook on the design, identification of active sites, and the appropriate application of artificial intelligence technology is provided for achieving scale-up application of SACs in petrochemical process.

Recent Progress and Opportunity of Metal Single-Atom Catalysts for Biomass Conversion Reactions

The conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into platform chemicals and fuels by metal single atoms is a new domain in solid catalysis research. Unlike the conventional catalysis route, single-atom catalysts (SACs) proliferate maximum utilization efficiency, high catalytic activity, and good selectivity to the desired product with an ultralow loading of the active sites. More strikingly, SACs show a unique cost-effective pathway for the conversion of complex sugar molecules to value-added chemicals in high yield and selectivity, which may be hindered by conventional metal nanoparticles. Primarily, SACs having adjustable active sites could be easily modified using sophisticated synthetic techniques based on their intended reactions. This review covers current research on the use of SACs with a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of catalyst design, and their distinctive activities in each type of reaction (hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, hydrodeoxygenation, oxidation, and dehydrogenation). Furthermore, the fundamental insights into the superior actions of SACs within the opportunity and prospects for the industrial-scale synthesis of value-added products from the lignocelluloses are covered.

Highly active, ultra-low loading single-atom iron catalysts for catalytic transfer hydrogenation

Highly effective and selective noble metal-free catalysts attract significant attention. Here, a single-atom iron catalyst is fabricated by saturated adsorption of trace iron onto zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) followed by pyrolysis. Its performance toward catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural is comparable to state-of-the-art catalysts and up to four orders higher than other Fe catalysts. Isotopic labeling experiments demonstrate an intermolecular hydride transfer mechanism. First principles simulations, spectroscopic calculations and experiments, and kinetic correlations reveal that the synthesis creates pyrrolic Fe(II)-plN3 as the active center whose flexibility manifested by being pulled out of the plane, enabled by defects, is crucial for collocating the reagents and allowing the chemistry to proceed. The catalyst catalyzes chemoselectively several substrates and possesses a unique trait whereby the chemistry is hindered for more acidic substrates than the hydrogen donors. This work paves the way toward noble-metal free single-atom catalysts for important chemical reactions.

Porous Ni3Fe intermetallic compounds as efficient and stable catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solutions

It is crucial to develop cost-effective novel non-noble metal catalysts with high activity and durability for large-scale industrial hydrogen production via water splitting. Here, based on a facile powder metallurgy method, Ni3Fe intermetallic electrodes with porous structures and controllable phases have been designed and fabricated by sintering mixed Ni and Fe powders under an Ar atmosphere. The effects of sintering temperature on the morphology, porous structure and phase composition of the intermetallic were studied. The resultant Ni3Fe-900 intermetallic electrode exhibits promising HER activity in alkaline electrolytes with an overpotential of 112 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Additionally, the Ni3Fe-900 intermetallic electrode shows good alkali corrosion resistance and stability in the HER process at a current density as high as 500 mA cm-2 for 24 h with no significant changes of the surface morphology, porous structure and phases. The efficient HER performance of the Ni3Fe-900 electrode is attributed to the unique intrinsic activity of the intermetallic electrode, increased accessible active sites originating from the porous structure and accelerated charge transfer. This work provides new insights into the design of electrocatalysts for industrial large-scale hydrogen production by water splitting.

Single-Atom Catalysts for Hydrogen Activation

Selective hydrogenation is one of the most important reactions in fine chemical industry, and the activation of H₂ is the key step for hydrogenation. Catalysts play a critical role in selective hydrogenation, and some single-atom catalysts (SACs) are highly capable of activating H₂ in selective hydrogenation by virtue of the maximized atom utilization and the highly uniform active sites. Therefore, more research efforts are needed for the rational design of SACs with superior H₂ -activating capabilities. Herein, the research progress on H₂ activation in typical hydrogenation systems (such as alkyne hydrogenation, hydroformylation, hydrodechlorination, hydrodeoxygenation, nitroaromatics hydrogenation, and polycyclic aromatics hydrogenation) is reviewed, the mechanisms of SACs for H₂ activation are summarized, and the structural regulation strategies for SACs are proposed to promote H₂ activation and provide schemes for the design of high-selectivity hydrogenation catalysts from the atomic scale. At the end of this review, an outlook on the opportunities and challenges for SACs to be developed for selective hydrogenation is presented.

Synergetic Dual-Atom Catalysts: The Next Boom of Atomic Catalysts

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are an important branch of single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the former can effectively break the dilemma faced by the traditional SACs. The synergetic effects between bimetallic atoms provide many active sites, promising to improve catalytic performance and even catalyze more complex reactions. This paper reviews the recent research progresses of two kinds of DACs, including homonuclear and heteronuclear DACs, and their applications in oxygen reduction, carbon dioxide reduction, hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, Zn-air batteries, tandem catalytic reactions, and so on. In addition, in order to promote the further development of DACs, the challenges and perspectives of DACs are put forward.

Recent Advances in Reductive Upgrading of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural via Heterogeneous Thermocatalysis

The catalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfufural (HMF), one of the vital platform chemicals in biomass upgrading, holds great promise for producing highly valuable chemicals through sustainable routes, thereby alleviating the dependence on fossil feedstocks and reducing CO₂ emissions. The reductive upgrading (hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, ring-opening, ring-rearrangement, amination, etc.) of HMF has exhibited great potential to produce monomers, liquid fuel additives, and other valuable chemicals. Thermocatalytic conversion has a significant advantage over photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in productivity. In this Review, the recent achievements of thermo-reductive transformation of HMF to various chemicals using heterogeneous catalytic systems are presented, including the catalytic systems (catalyst and solvent), reaction conditions, (reaction temperature, pressure, etc.), and reaction mechanisms. The current challenges and future opportunities are discussed as well, aiming at guiding the catalyst design and practical scalable productions.

Insights into the interfacial effects in Cu-Co/CeOx catalysts on hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to biofuel 2,5-dimethylfuran

The interface site between metal and support possess unique electronic and morphological structure, providing distinct active centers for favorable reaction in catalytic conversion of biomass derivatives to valuable chemicals. In this study, a series of Cu-Co/CeO_x catalysts were prepared for hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) via reduction of the corresponding layered double hydroxide precursors. The characterizations indicated the formation of CoCe-Vö interface (Vö denotes oxygen vacancy) and the effect of hydrogen spillover from Cu species to CoCe-Vö interface. Furthermore, the experiments and theoretical calculations verified that CoCe-Vö interface could activate the CO bond. The optimized catalyst showed a DMF yield of > 90% at 180 °C and 1.5 MPa H₂ with no deactivation in the cycling tests. This study reveals the interfacial effects of the nanocatalysts, including the oxygen vacancies and hydrogen spillover, on hydrogenolysis of HMF, which provided a simple and efficient approach for synthesis of high-performance non-noble metal nanocatalysts applied to the hydrogenolysis of various biomass derivatives.

Decreasing the coordinated N atoms in a single-atom Cu catalyst to achieve selective transfer hydrogenation of alkynes

Single-atom (SA) catalysts have attracted broad attention due to their distinctive catalytic properties in diverse reactions. Increasing the unsaturated coordination sites of active centers is a valid and challenging approach to improve the performance of such catalysts. Herein, we report an oxide compounding strategy to decrease the N coordination number of a SA Cu catalyst by reducing the thickness of the N-doped carbon carrier with a lower density of N atoms. The SA Cu catalyst with a more unsaturated N coordination structure can achieve transfer hydrogenation of alkynes with good activity and selectivity, which is disabled over the common N coordinated SA Cu catalyst on pure CN. It is found that individual Cu centers coordinated by fewer N atoms can accelerate the hydrogen transfer from ammonia-borane and still leave proper adsorption sites for alkynes to realize the entire hydrogenation reaction. This work will open up new opportunities to modulate the unsaturated coordination structure of SA catalysts for creating better-performing heterogeneous catalysts.

Emerging heterogeneous catalysts for biomass conversion: studies of the reaction mechanism

The development of efficient catalysts to break down and convert woody biomass will be a paradigm shift in delivering the global target of sustainable economy and environment via the use of cheap, highly abundant, and renewable carbon resources. However, such development is extremely challenging due to the complexity of lignocellulose, and today most biomass is treated simply as waste. The solution lies in the design of multifunctional catalysts that can place effective control on substrate activation and product selectivity. This is, however, severely hindered by the lack of fundamental understanding of (i) the precise role of active sites, and (ii) the catalyst-substrate chemistry that underpins the catalytic activity. Moreover, active sites alone often cannot deliver the desired selectivity of products, and full understanding of the microenvironment of the active sites is urgently needed. Here, we review key recent advances in the study of reaction mechanisms of biomass conversion over emerging heterogeneous catalysts. These insights will inform the design of future catalytic systems showing improved activity and selectivity.

Recent Advancements in Plastic Packaging Recycling: A Mini-Review

Today, the scientific community is facing crucial challenges in delivering a healthier world for future generations. Among these, the quest for circular and sustainable approaches for plastic recycling is one of the most demanding for several reasons. Indeed, the massive use of plastic materials over the last century has generated large amounts of long-lasting waste, which, for much time, has not been object of adequate recovery and disposal politics. Most of this waste is generated by packaging materials. Nevertheless, in the last decade, a new trend imposed by environmental concerns brought this topic under the magnifying glass, as testified by the increasing number of related publications. Several methods have been proposed for the recycling of polymeric plastic materials based on chemical or mechanical methods. A panorama of the most promising studies related to the recycling of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS) is given within this review.
