Dynamics and Equilibration Mechanisms in Block Copolymer Particles

Self-assembly of block copolymers into interesting and useful nanostructures, in both solution and bulk, is a vibrant research arena. While much attention has been paid to characterization and prediction of equilibrium phases, the associated dynamic processes are far from fully understood. Here, we explore what is known and not known about the equilibration of particle phases in the bulk, and spherical micelles in solution. The presumed primary equilibration mechanisms are chain exchange, fusion, and fragmentation. These processes have been extensively studied in surfactants and lipids, where they occur on subsecond time scales. In contrast, increased chain lengths in block copolymers create much larger barriers, and time scales can become prohibitively slow. In practice, equilibration of block copolymers is achievable only in proximity to the critical micelle temperature (in solution) or the order-disorder transition (in the bulk). Detailed theories for these processes in block copolymers are few. In the bulk, the rate of chain exchange can be quantified by tracer diffusion measurements. Often the rate of equilibration, in terms of number density and aggregation number of particles, is much slower than chain exchange, and consequently observed particle phases are often metastable. This is particularly true in regions of the phase diagram where Frank-Kasper phases occur. Chain exchange in solution has been explored quantitatively by time-resolved SANS, but the results are not well captured by theory. Computer simulations, particularly via dissipative particle dynamics, are beginning to shed light on the chain escape mechanism at the molecular level. The rate of fragmentation has been quantified in a few experimental systems, and TEM images support a mechanism akin to the anaphase stage of mitosis in cells, via a thin neck that pinches off to produce two smaller micelles. Direct measurements of micelle fusion are quite rare. Suggestions for future theoretical, computational, and experimental efforts are offered.

Phase Diagram Study of Catanionic Surfactants Using Dissipative Particle Dynamics

Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations has been performed to study the phase transition of a mixture of cationic and anionic surfactants in an aqueous solution as a function of the total concentration in water and the relative ratio of surfactants. The impact of the relative difference between the tail lengths of the cationic and anionic surfactants on the phase diagram has been simulated by tuning the number of DPD beads in the simulation model. This research also discusses the impact of the frequently used values of the parameters associated with the harmonic bonds among the bonded DPD beads on the obtained self-assemblies. We find remarkable differences in the resultant self-assemblies based on different choices of harmonic bond parameters. The performed simulations show an enhanced spectrum of self-assemblies with augmented tail lengths and disparate harmonic bond parameters. The obtained self-assemblies are quite unique and can potentially be used in the future for various applications. We also compare the simulation results of the vesicle structures obtained by modeling the electrostatic interaction in the simulation among the charged beads by explicitly introducing charges with a long-range interaction with those obtained by tuning the implicit electrostatic interaction without the long-range interaction. The effects of the chain length of the model and the harmonic bond parameters on the internal density of DPD beads and stress profiles within the vesicles are examined closely. These results are a significant contribution to understanding the stability of the phases and tailoring of the desired vesicles.

DPD Modelling of the Self- and Co-Assembly of Polymers and Polyelectrolytes in Aqueous Media: Impact on Polymer Science

This review article is addressed to a broad community of polymer scientists. We outline and analyse the fundamentals of the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation method from the point of view of polymer physics and review the articles on polymer systems published in approximately the last two decades, focusing on their impact on macromolecular science. Special attention is devoted to polymer and polyelectrolyte self- and co-assembly and self-organisation and to the problems connected with the implementation of explicit electrostatics in DPD numerical machinery. Critical analysis of the results of a number of successful DPD studies of complex polymer systems published recently documents the importance and suitability of this coarse-grained method for studying polymer systems.

The influence of arm composition on the self-assembly of low-functionality telechelic star polymers in dilute solutions

We combine synthesis, physical experiments, and computer simulations to investigate self-assembly patterns of low-functionality telechelic star polymers (TSPs) in dilute solutions. In particular, in this work, we focus on the effect of the arm composition and length on the static and dynamic properties of TSPs, whose terminal blocks are subject to worsening solvent quality upon reducing the temperature. We find two populations, single stars and clusters, that emerge upon worsening the solvent quality of the outer block. For both types of populations, their spatial extent decreases with temperature, with the specific details (such as temperature at which the minimal size is reached) depending on the coupling between inter- and intra-molecular associations as well as their strength. The experimental results are in very good qualitative agreement with coarse-grained simulations, which offer insights into the mechanism of thermoresponsive behavior of this class of materials.
