Progress in the therapeutic applications of polymer-decorated black phosphorus and black phosphorus analog nanomaterials in biomedicine

2D nanomaterials-based delivery systems and their potentials in anticancer synergistic photo-immunotherapy

As the field of cancer therapeutics evolves, integrating two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with photo-immunotherapy has emerged as a promising approach with significant potential to augment cancer treatment efficacy. These 2D nanomaterials include graphene-based 2D nanomaterials, 2D MXenes, 2D layered double hydroxides, black phosphorus nanosheets, 2D metal-organic frameworks, and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides. They exhibit high load capacities, multiple functionalization pathways, optimal biocompatibility, and physiological stability. Predominantly, they function as anti-tumor delivery systems, amalgamating diverse therapeutic modalities, most notably phototherapy and immunotherapy, and the former is a recognized non-invasive treatment modality, and the latter represents the most promising anti-cancer strategy presently accessible. Thus, integrating phototherapy and immunotherapy founded on 2D nanomaterials unveils a novel paradigm in the war against cancer. This review delineates the latest developments in 2D nanomaterials as delivery systems for synergistic photo-immunotherapy in cancer treatment. We elaborate on the burgeoning realm of photo-immunotherapy, exploring the interplay between phototherapy and enhanced immune cells, immune response modulation, or immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments. Notably, the strategies to augment photo-immunotherapy have also been discussed. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future perspectives of these 2D nanomaterials in photo-immunotherapy.

Emerging 2D Nanomaterials-Integrated Hydrogels: Advancements in Designing Theragenerative Materials for Bone Regeneration and Disease Therapy

This review highlights recent advancements in the synthesis, processing, properties, and applications of 2D-material integrated hydrogels, with a focus on their performance in bone-related applications. Various synthesis methods and types of 2D nanomaterials, including graphene, graphene oxide, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, and MXene are discussed, along with strategies for their incorporation into hydrogel matrices. These composite hydrogels exhibit tunable mechanical properties, high surface area, strong near-infrared (NIR) photon absorption and controlled release capabilities, making them suitable for a range of regeneration and therapeutic applications. In cancer therapy, 2D-material-based hydrogels show promise for photothermal and photodynamic therapies, and drug delivery (chemotherapy). The photothermal properties of these materials enable selective tumor ablation upon NIR irradiation, while their high drug-loading capacity facilitates targeted and controlled release of chemotherapeutic agents. Additionally, 2D-materials -infused hydrogels exhibit potent antibacterial activity, making them effective against multidrug-resistant infections and disruption of biofilm generated on implant surface. Moreover, their synergistic therapy approach combines multiple treatment modalities such as photothermal, chemo, and immunotherapy to enhance therapeutic outcomes. In bio-imaging, these materials serve as versatile contrast agents and imaging probes, enabling their real-time monitoring during tumor imaging. Furthermore, in bone regeneration, most 2D-materials incorporated hydrogels promote osteogenesis and tissue regeneration, offering potential solutions for bone defects repair. Overall, the integration of 2D materials into hydrogels presents a promising platform for developing multifunctional theragenerative biomaterials.

Black phosphorus, an advanced versatile nanoparticles of antitumor, antibacterial and bone regeneration for OS therapy

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor. In the clinic, usual strategies for OS treatment include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, all of these therapies have complications that cannot be ignored. Therefore, the search for better OS treatments is urgent. Black phosphorus (BP), a rising star of 2D inorganic nanoparticles, has shown excellent results in OS therapy due to its outstanding photothermal, photodynamic, biodegradable and biocompatible properties. This review aims to present current advances in the use of BP nanoparticles in OS therapy, including the synthesis of BP nanoparticles, properties of BP nanoparticles, types of BP nanoparticles, and modification strategies for BP nanoparticles. In addition, we have discussed comprehensively the application of BP in OS therapy, including single, dual, and multimodal synergistic OS therapies, as well as studies about bone regeneration and antibacterial properties. Finally, we have summarized the conclusions, limitations and perspectives of BP nanoparticles for OS therapy.

Black Phosphorus-based Photocatalysts: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

Photocatalysis is considered as an eco-friendly and sustainable strategy, since it uses abundant light for the advancement of the reaction, which is freely accessible and is devoid of environmental pollution. During the last decades, (nano)photocatalysts have gained broad industrial applications in terms of purification and detoxification of water as well as production of green fuels and hydrogen gas due to their special attributes. The degradation or remediation of toxic and hazardous compounds from the environment or changing them into non-toxic entities is a significant endeavor and necessary for the safety of humans, animals, and the environment. Black phosphorus (BP), a two-dimensional single-element material, has a marvelous structure, tunable bandgap, changeable morphology from bulk to nanosheet/quantum dot, and unique physicochemical properties, which makes it attractive material for photocatalytic applications, especially for sustainable development purposes. Since it can serve as a photocatalyst with or without coupling with other semiconductors, various aspects for multidimensional exploitation of BP are deliberated including their preparation via solvothermal, ball milling, calcination, and sonication methods to obtain BP from red phosphorus. The techniques for improving the photocatalytic and stability of BP-based composites are discussed along with their multifaceted applications for environmental remediation, pollution degradation, water splitting, N2 fixation, CO2 reduction, bacterial disinfection, H2 generation, and photodynamic therapy. Herein, most recent advancements pertaining to the photocatalytic applications of BP-based photocatalyst are cogitated, with a focus on their synthesis and properties as well as crucial challenges and future perspectives.

Bioinspired All-in-One Three-Dimensional Dynamic CellMatrix Improves the Manufacture of Therapeutically Qualified Cells for Cell Therapy

Despite the great promise, cell therapy still faces practical challenges because of the scarcity of a reliable cell source. Herein, a bioinspired 3D dynamic culture system (CellMatrix) with rational structure, composite and function, was developed for improving cell supply. CellMatrix was composed of unique core-shell fibers with a core of black phosphorus-incorporated fibroin and a shell of sericin, which together formed a 3D silkworm cocoon-mimicking structure via a bottom-up fabrication technique. CellMatrix not only provided optimal engineered biomimetic niche to facilitate cell growth but exhibited good photothermal conversion to dynamically regulate cell fates. Importantly, cell-CellMatrix construct could be directly implanted into defected tissues and improved tissue remodeling. Meanwhile, CellMatrix displayed good ice resistance and thermal conductivity, which maximally maintained cell viability and proliferation after the freeze-thawing process, allowing for storing precious cells and cell-CellMatrix construct. Thus, CellMatrix represents an all-in-one biomimetic platform for the culture-production-storage of therapeutically qualified cells.

Multifunctional SERS chip mediated by black phosphorus@gold-silver nanocomposites inserted in bilayer membrane for in-situ detection and degradation of hazardous materials

Self-cleaning surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates dependent on versatile two-dimensional semiconductors offer an efficient channel for the sensitive monitoring and timely degradation of hazardous molecules. Herein, a kind of sophisticated SERS-active nanocomposites was developed by incorporating Au-Ag nanoparticles onto black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets via photo-induced self-reduction. Combining the substantial electromagnetic "hot spots" triggered by bimetallic plasma coupling effect and the efficient charge transfer from BP to probe molecules, the proposed nanocomposites featured attractive SERS enhancement, facilitating a limit of detection down to 4.5 × 10^-10 M. Attributed to the remarkable restriction of electron-hole recombination stemming from "Schottky contact", the photocatalytic activity of BP was prominently boosted, demonstrating a complete degradation time as short as 65 min. Furthermore, the disgusting instability of BP was considerably hindered by inserting the nanocomposites into various bilayer matrices with diverse hardness and viscosity inspired by cling film principle. Moreover, a significantly elevated collection rate high to 93.1% for in-situ detection was also achieved by the as-manufactured flexible SERS chips based on tape. This study illustrates a clear perspective for the development of versatile BP-based SERS chips which might facilitate sensitive analysis and treatment of perilous contaminants in complicated real-life scenarios.

NIR-II Responsive Molybdenum Dioxide Nanosystem Manipulating Cellular Immunogenicity for Enhanced Tumor Photoimmunotherapy

Photothermal therapy (PTT) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window has emerged as a better candidate for deep-tissue tumor elimination. More interestingly, the photothermal ablated tumor cells also manifest somewhat immunostimulation potency to elicit antitumor immunity, although most dying cells are undergoing apoptosis that is commonly considered as immunologically silent. Here, a NIR-II responsive nanosystem is established for tumor photoimmunotherapy using molybdenum dioxide (MoO₂) nanodumbbells as the nanoconverter. Meanwhile, an apoptosis-blocking strategy is proposed to regulate the cell death pattern under NIR-II laser irradiation in order to improve the immunogenic cell death. The nanoformulation can efficiently block caspase 8-dependent apoptotic pathway in photothermal ablated tumor cells and transform into more immunogenic death patterns, thereby activating systemic immunity to inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. In addition, this strategy also helps enhance the body's responses to α-PD-1 immune checkpoint inhibitor, which implies a potential optimal combination for cancer immunotherapy.

Recent Development of Conductive Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering: Review and Perspective

In recent years, tissue engineering techniques have been rapidly developed and offer a new therapeutic approach to organ or tissue damage repair. However, most of tissue engineering scaffolds are nonconductive and cannot establish effective electrical coupling with tissue for the electroactive tissues. Electroconductive hydrogels (ECHs) have received increasing attention in tissue engineering owing to their electroconductivity, biocompatibility and high water content. In vitro, ECHs can not only promote the communication of electrical signals between cells, but also mediate the adhesion, proliferation, migration, and differentiation of different kinds of cells. In vivo, ECHs can transmit the electric signal to electroactive tissues and activate bioelectrical signaling pathways to promote tissue repair. As a result, implanting ECHs into damaged tissues can effectively reconstruct physiological functions related to electrical conduction. In this review, we first present an overview about the classifications and the fabrication methods of ECHs. And then, the applications of ECHs in tissue engineering, including cardiac, nerve, skin and skeletal muscle tissue, are highlighted. Recent advances in smart stimuli-responsive biomaterials for bone therapeutics and regeneration

Bone defects combined with tumors, infections, or other bone diseases are challenging in clinical practice. Autologous and allogeneic grafts are two main traditional remedies, but they can cause a series of complications. To address this problem, researchers have constructed various implantable biomaterials. However, the original pathological microenvironment of bone defects, such as residual tumors, severe infection, or other bone diseases, could further affect bone regeneration. Thus, the rational design of versatile biomaterials with integrated bone therapy and regeneration functions is in great demand. Many strategies have been applied to fabricate smart stimuli-responsive materials for bone therapy and regeneration, with stimuli related to external physical triggers or endogenous disease microenvironments or involving multiple integrated strategies. Typical external physical triggers include light irradiation, electric and magnetic fields, ultrasound, and mechanical stimuli. These stimuli can transform the internal atomic packing arrangements of materials and affect cell fate, thus enhancing bone tissue therapy and regeneration. In addition to the external stimuli-responsive strategy, some specific pathological microenvironments, such as excess reactive oxygen species and mild acidity in tumors, specific pH reduction and enzymes secreted by bacteria in severe infection, and electronegative potential in bone defect sites, could be used as biochemical triggers to activate bone disease therapy and bone regeneration. Herein, we summarize and discuss the rational construction of versatile biomaterials with bone therapeutic and regenerative functions. The specific mechanisms, clinical applications, and existing limitations of the newly designed biomaterials are also clarified.

Combining nanotechnology with the multifunctional roles of neutrophils against cancer and inflammatory disease

Neutrophils, the most abundant leukocytes in humans, play a crucial role in acute inflammation during infection and tumorigenesis. Neutrophils are the major types of cells recruited to the inflammation sites induced by pathogens, exhibiting great homing ability towards inflammatory disorders and tumor sites. Therefore, a neutrophil-based drug delivery system (NDDS) has become a promising platform for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory treatment. Recent decades have witnessed the huge progress of applying nanomaterials in drug delivery. Nanomaterials are regarded as innovative components to enrich the field of neutrophil-based therapies due to their unique physiochemical characteristics. In this review, the latest advancement of combining diverse nanomaterials with an NDDS for cancer and inflammatory disease treatment will be summarized. It is discussed how nanomaterials empower the therapeutic area of an NDDS and how an NDDS circumvents the limitations of nanomaterials. Moreover, based on the finding that neutrophils are closely involved in the progression of cancer and inflammatory diseases, emerging therapeutic strategies that target neutrophils will be outlined. Finally, as neutrophils were demonstrated to play a central role in the immunopathology of COVID-19, which causes necroinflammation that is responsible for the cytokine storm and sepsis during coronavirus infections, novel therapeutic approaches that anchor neutrophils against the pathological consequences related to COVID-19 will be highlighted as well.

Conductive Biomaterials as Bioactive Wound Dressing for Wound Healing and Skin Tissue Engineering

Conductive biomaterials based on conductive polymers, carbon nanomaterials, or conductive inorganic nanomaterials demonstrate great potential in wound healing and skin tissue engineering, owing to the similar conductivity to human skin, good antioxidant and antibacterial activities, electrically controlled drug delivery, and photothermal effect. However, a review highlights the design and application of conductive biomaterials for wound healing and skin tissue engineering is lacking. In this review, the design and fabrication methods of conductive biomaterials with various structural forms including film, nanofiber, membrane, hydrogel, sponge, foam, and acellular dermal matrix for applications in wound healing and skin tissue engineering and the corresponding mechanism in promoting the healing process were summarized. The approaches that conductive biomaterials realize their great value in healing wounds via three main strategies (electrotherapy, wound dressing, and wound assessment) were reviewed. The application of conductive biomaterials as wound dressing when facing different wounds including acute wound and chronic wound (infected wound and diabetic wound) and for wound monitoring is discussed in detail. The challenges and perspectives in designing and developing multifunctional conductive biomaterials are proposed as well.

Strategic Design of Intelligent-Responsive Nanogel Carriers for Cancer Therapy

Owing to the distinctive constituents of tumor tissue from those healthy organs, nanomedicine strategies show significant potentials in smart drug delivery. Nowadays, stimuli-responsive nanogels are playing increasingly important roles in the application of cancer therapy because of their sensitivity to various internal or external physicochemical stimuli, which exhibit site-specific and markedly enhanced drug release. Besides, nanogels are promising as drug carriers because of their porous structures, good biocompatibility, large surface area, and excellent capability with drugs. Taking advantage of multiresponsiveness, recent years have witnessed the rapid evolution of stimulus-responsive nanogels from monoresponsive to multiresponsive systems; however, there lacks a comprehensive review summarizing these reports. In this Review, we discuss the properties, synthesis, and characterization of nanogels. Moreover, tumor microenvironment and corresponding designing strategies for stimuli-response nanogels, both exogenous (temperature, magnetic field, light) and endogenous (pH, biomolecular, redox, ROS, pressure, hypoxia) are summarized on the basis of the recent advances in multistimuli-responsive nanogel systems. Nanogel and two-dimensional material composites show excellent performance in the field of constructing multistimulus-responsive nanoparticles and precise intelligent drug release integrated system for multimodal cancer diagnosis and therapy. Finally, potential progresses and suggestions are provided for the further design of hybrid nanogels based on emerging two-dimensional materials.

Chemistry, Functionalization, and Applications of Recent Monoelemental Two-Dimensional Materials and Their Heterostructures

The past decades have witnessed a rapid expansion in investigations of two-dimensional (2D) monoelemental materials (Xenes), which are promising materials in various fields, including applications in optoelectronic devices, biomedicine, catalysis, and energy storage. Apart from graphene and phosphorene, recently emerging 2D Xenes, specifically graphdiyne, borophene, arsenene, antimonene, bismuthene, and tellurene, have attracted considerable interest due to their unique optical, electrical, and catalytic properties, endowing them a broader range of intriguing applications. In this review, the structures and properties of these emerging Xenes are summarized based on theoretical and experimental results. The synthetic approaches for their fabrication, mainly bottom-up and top-down, are presented. Surface modification strategies are also shown. The wide applications of these emerging Xenes in nonlinear optical devices, optoelectronics, catalysis, biomedicine, and energy application are further discussed. Finally, this review concludes with an assessment of the current status, a description of existing scientific and application challenges, and a discussion of possible directions to advance this fertile field.

2D materials for bone therapy

Due to their prominent physicochemical properties, 2D materials are broadly applied in biomedicine. Currently, 2D materials have achieved great success in treating many diseases such as cancer and tissue engineering as well as bone therapy. Based on their different characteristics, 2D materials could function in various ways in different bone diseases. Herein, the application of 2D materials in bone tissue engineering, joint lubrication, infection of orthopedic implants, bone tumors, and osteoarthritis are firstly reviewed comprehensively together. Meanwhile, different mechanisms by which 2D materials function in each disease reviewed below are also reviewed in detail, which in turn reveals the versatile functions and application of 2D materials. At last, the outlook on how to further broaden applications of 2D materials in bone therapies based on their excellent properties is also discussed.

Black Phosphorus, an Emerging Versatile Nanoplatform for Cancer Immunotherapy

Black phosphorus (BP) is one of the emerging versatile nanomaterials with outstanding biocompatibility and biodegradability, exhibiting great potential as a promising inorganic nanomaterial in the biomedical field. BP nanomaterials possess excellent ability for valid bio-conjugation and molecular loading in anticancer therapy. Generally, BP nanomaterials can be classified into BP nanosheets (BPNSs) and BP quantum dots (BPQDs), both of which can be synthesized through various preparation routes. In addition, BP nanomaterials can be applied as photothermal agents (PTA) for the photothermal therapy (PTT) due to their high photothermal conversion efficiency and larger extinction coefficients. The generated local hyperpyrexia leads to thermal elimination of tumor. Besides, BP nanomaterials are capable of producing singlet oxygen, which enable its application as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Moreover, BP nanomaterials can be oxidized and degraded to nontoxic phosphonates and phosphate under physiological conditions, improving their safety as a nano drug carrier in cancer therapy. Recently, it has been reported that BP-based PTT is capable of activating immune responses and alleviating the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment by detection of T lymphocytes and various immunocytokines, indicating that BP-based nanocomposites not only serve as effective PTAs to ablate large solid tumors but also function as an immunomodulation agent to eliminate discrete tumorlets. Therefore, BP-mediated immunotherapy would provide more possibilities for synergistic cancer treatment.

Surface decoration of black phosphorus nanosheets to generate oxygen and release 1O2 for photodynamic killing of bacteria

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has evolved as an essential method for infection control, but is confronted with challenges in terms of low oxygen supply, possible toxicity during light irradiation, and nonpersistent action. Herein, to address these limitations, black phosphorus (BP) is used as a photosensitizer and decorated with Pt nanoparticles and aminobenzyl-2-pyridone (APy) moieties to obtain BP@APy-Pt. The stability of BP is improved through the capture and occupation of lone-pair electrons after reductive deposition of Pt nanoparticles and covalent conjugation of APy. Pt nanoparticles on BP@APy-Pt catalyze the decomposition of endogenous H₂O₂ to produce oxygen for consecutive cycles with a stable production capacity. The light exposure to BP@APy-Pt generates significantly higher ¹O₂ levels than those of BP/light, and the generated ¹O₂ is partially captured by APy moieties. The captured ¹O₂ during 20 min of illumination shows a constant release for 24 h in the dark. The cycled storage and release feature eliminates the toxicity of ¹O₂ at high levels during illumination and leads to efficient destruction of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Compared to the healing rates after treatment with BP/light (57.6%), BP@Pt/light (64.8%), BP@APy/light (77.8%), and BP@APy-Pt (48.5%), the skin wounds with infected S. aureus are fully healed after BP@APy-Pt/light treatment. Blood vessels and hair follicles are regenerated to resemble those of normal skin. Thus, this study expands the PDT strategy through integration with oxygen generation, ¹O₂ storage, and persistent release to promote bactericidal efficacy and eliminate side effects.

Fascinating MXene nanomaterials: emerging opportunities in the biomedical field

In recent years, there has been rapid progress in MXene research due to its distinctive two-dimensional structure and outstanding properties. Especially in biomedical applications, MXenes have attracted widespread favor with numerous studies on biosafety, bioimaging, therapy, and biosensing, although their development is still in the experimental stage. A comprehensive understanding of the current status of MXenes in biomedicine will promote their use in clinical applications. Here, we review advances in MXene research. First, we introduce the methods of synthesis, surface modification and functionalization of MXenes. Then, we summarize the biosafety and biocompatibility, paving the way for specific biomedical applications. On this basis, MXene nanostructures are described with respect to their use in antibacterial, bioimaging, cancer therapy, tissue regeneration and biosensor applications. Finally, we discuss MXene as a promising candidate material for further applications in biomedicine.

Overcoming barriers in photodynamic therapy harnessing nano-formulation strategies

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been extensively investigated for decades for tumor treatment because of its non-invasiveness, spatiotemporal selectivity, lower side-effects, and immune activation ability. It can be a promising treatment modality in several medical fields, including oncology, immunology, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, cardiology, pneumology, and dentistry. Nevertheless, the clinical application of PDT is largely restricted by the drawbacks of traditional photosensitizers, limited tissue penetrability of light, inefficient induction of tumor cell death, tumor resistance to the therapy, and the severe pain induced by the therapy. Recently, various photosensitizer formulations and therapy strategies have been developed to overcome these barriers. Significantly, the introduction of nanomaterials in PDT, as carriers or photosensitizers, may overcome the drawbacks of traditional photosensitizers. Based on this, nanocomposites excited by various light sources are applied in the PDT of deep-seated tumors. Modulation of cell death pathways with co-delivered reagents promotes PDT induced tumor cell death. Relief of tumor resistance to PDT with combined therapy strategies further promotes tumor inhibition. Also, the optimization of photosensitizer formulations and therapy procedures reduces pain in PDT. Here, a systematic summary of recent advances in the fabrication of photosensitizers and the design of therapy strategies to overcome barriers in PDT is presented. Several aspects important for the clinical application of PDT in cancer treatment are also discussed.

Alkali metal doping of black phosphorus monolayer for ultrasensitive capture and detection of nitrogen dioxide

Black phosphorus nanostructures have recently sparked substantial research interest for the rational development of novel chemosensors and nanodevices. For the first time, the influence of alkali metal doping of black phosphorus monolayer (BP) on its capabilities for nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) capture and monitoring is discussed. Four different nanostructures including BP, Li-BP, Na-BP, and K-BP were evaluated; it was found that the adsorption configuration on Li-BP was different from others such that the NO₂ molecule preferred a vertical stabilization rather than a parallel configuration with respect to the surface. The efficiency for the detection increased in the sequence of Na-BP < BP < K-BP < Li-BP, with the most significant improvement of + 95.2% in the case of Li doping. The Na-BP demonstrated the most compelling capacity (54 times higher than BP) for NO₂ capture and catalysis (− 24.36 kcal/mol at HSE06/TZVP). Furthermore, the K-doped device was appropriate for both nitrogen dioxide adsorption and sensing while also providing the highest work function sensitivity (55.4%), which was much higher than that of BP (10.4%).

Stabilization of Black Phosphorus by Sonication-Assisted Simultaneous Exfoliation and Functionalization

Black phosphorus (BP) has extraordinary properties, but its ambient instability remains a critical challenge. Functionalization has been employed to overcome the sensitivity of BP to ambient conditions while preserving its properties. Herein, a simultaneous exfoliation-functionalization process is reported that functionalizes BP flakes during exfoliation and thus provides increased protection, which can be attributed to minimal exposure of the flakes to ambient oxygen and water. A tetrabutylammonium salt was employed for intercalation of BP, resulting in the formation of flakes with large lateral dimensions. The addition of an aryl iodide or an aryl iodonium salt to the exfoliation solvent creates a scalable strategy for the production of functionalized few-layer BP flakes. The ambient stability of functionalized BP was prolonged to a period of one week, as revealed by STEM, AFM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Multifunctional layered black phosphorene-based nanoplatform for disease diagnosis and treatment: a review

As an outstanding two-dimensional material, black phosphorene, has attracted significant attention in the biomedicine field due to its large surface area, strong optical absorption, distinct bioactivity, excellent biocompatibility, and high biodegradability. In this review, the preparation and properties of black phosphorene are summarized first. Thereafter, black phosphorene-based multifunctional platforms employed for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including cancer, bone injuries, brain diseases, progressive oxidative diseases, and kidney injury, are reviewed in detail. This review provides a better understanding of the exciting properties of black phosphorene, such as its high drug-loading efficiency, photothermal conversion capability, high ¹O₂ generation efficiency, and high electrical conductivity, as well as how these properties can be exploited in biomedicine. Finally, the research perspectives of black phosphorene are discussed.

Continuous preparation of antimony nanocrystals with near infrared photothermal property by pulsed laser ablation in liquids

Antimony nanocrystals (Sb NCs) are of interest in energy storage, catalysis and cancer therapy for its special physical, chemical and biomedical properties. However, methodology challenges still remain in preparation of colloidal Sb NCs, due to the restricted reaction solution systems, high temperature and time costing for common routes. Herein, size controllable colloidal Sb NCs were continuously prepared by pulsed laser ablation of Sb target in different solvents, owning to the metal nanodroplet explosive ejection and thermal evaporation mechanisms. These well dispersed and stable Sb NCs showed excellent photothermal property in the near-infrared-II window.
