Preparation of graphene oxide (GO)/lanthanum coordination polymers for enhancement of bactericidal activity

Uncovering the role of free lanthanum (La3+) ions and La oligomer on the surface of La (oxy)hydroxide particles for phosphate removal

La (oxy)hydroxide-based materials have been recognized as promising adsorbents for aqueous phosphate (P) removal. However, comprehending the adsorption behavior of P onto La (oxy)hydroxide particles remains challenging, given the heterogeneous low-crystalline surface encompassing La oligomers and free La3+ ions. In this study, a hydrogen (H) bond capping method was developed to construct La (oxy)hydroxide oligomers (LHOs) to simulate the low-crystalline La on the surface of La (oxy)hydroxide particles. The P uptake capacity was compared among free La3+ ions, LHOs, and La nanoparticle (La-NP) with maximum capacities of 1967.3 ± 30.8 mg/g, 461.1 ± 53.7 mg/g and 62.5 ± 6.0 mg/g, respectively. The FT-IR, Raman, in situ-XRD and XPS deconvolution analyses revealed that the removal of P by free La3+ ions mainly involve the process of chemical precipitation to form LaPO4·0.5H2O. Conversely, the elimination of P by LHOs is primarily attributed to inner-sphere complexation and hydroxyl exchange effect between LaOOH and P. Based on this study, the free La3+ ions and La oligomers on the surface of La (oxy)hydroxide particles play a primary role in P adsorption. These results also suggest that the successively decreased adsorption capacity of La (oxy)hydroxide-based adsorbents in the continuously adsorption/desorption cycles might be due to the irreversible inactivation and recrystallization of free La3+ ions and La oligomers on the surface.

Guanidine-containing double-network silks with enhanced tensile and antibacterial property

The bacterial infection of surgical wounds results in prolonged hospitalization and even death of patients, calling for antibacterial function in modern suture products. To tackle this challenge, cationic guanidine-containing copolymer was synthesized, exhibiting antibacterial potency over 5 log reduction against both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli. Furthermore, we developed a double-network silk suture by integrating a guanidine-containing copolymer network into the silk fibroin network. This suture exhibited biocidal activity against S. aureus and E. coli, and superior strength compared to the commercial product in both dry and wet conditions. These results may bring general benefits to public health and medical equipment sustainability.

Fast Synthesis of Graphene Oxide-β-Lactam as a Residue-Free Environmental Bacterial Inhibitor

Common pathogenic bacteria contaminate the environment through various modes of transmission. It is thus crucial to develop simple preparation methods of residue-free environmental disinfectants. β-Lactam antibiotics are frequently prescribed in clinical practice to treat bacterial infections. In this study, we used electrochemical exfoliation to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) with abundant ketene functional groups. A residue-free GO-β-lactam (GOβL) was subsequently obtained by mixing ketene and azomethine-H via a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction in the aqueous phase. GOβL has shown broad-spectrum bacterial inhibition against four bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Shigella dysenteriae), and it degrades rapidly within 24 h. This study provides a fast and easy method for the synthesis of GOβL, which can be employed as a promising environmental bacteriostatic disinfectant in real-life applications.

Ten-Gram-Scale Mechanochemical Synthesis of Ternary Lanthanum Coordination Polymers for Antibacterial and Antitumor Activities

As rare-earth coordination polymers (CPs) have appreciable antimicrobial properties, ternary lanthanum CPs have been widely synthesized and investigated in recent years. Here, we report convenient, solvent-free reactions between the lanthanum salt and two ligands at mild temperatures that form ternary lanthanum nanoscale CPs with 10-gram-scale. The structural features and morphologies were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and analyzer, and thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyzer (TG-DTA). Furthermore, the in vitro antibacterial activities of these ternary hybrids were studied using the zone of inhibition (ZOI) method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) and were found to have excellent antibacterial properties. The in vitro antitumor activities were performed in determining the absorbance values by CCK-8 (Cell Counting Kit-8) assay. This facile synthetic method would potentially enable the mass production of ternary lanthanum CPs at room temperature, which can be promising candidates as antibacterial compounds and antitumor agents.

Antibacterial fluorescent nano-sized lanthanum-doped carbon quantum dot embedded polyvinyl alcohol for accelerated wound healing

Bacteria is one of the main culprits that cause human diseases and pose long-term challenges to people's health. Rare earth elements have unique antibacterial advantages, but little research is available. In this paper, we reported an antibacterial composite film based on lanthanum-doped carbon quantum dot nanoparticles (La@N-P-CQDs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film for fluorescence of antibiotics and accelerating wound healing. PVA/La@N-P-CQDs composite film presented excellent hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, fluorescence intensity, and antibacterial effects. The antibacterial activity of La@N-P-CQDs was evaluated by employing antibacterial assay using Escherichia coli (E.coli)and Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) in vitro. La@N-P-CQDs showed enhanced antibacterial activity compared with N-P-CQDs. Moreover, the PVA/La@N-P-CQDs composite film with 0.5 mg/mL La@N-P-CQDs showed better antibacterial capability and wound healing performance than PVA and PVA/N-P-CQDs films in bacterial adhesion experiment. PVA/La@N-P-CQDs composite film could be used for wound dressing in vivo experiment and had no side effects on major organs in mice. The antibacterial composite film significantly promoted in vivo wound healing process because of its multifunctional properties. Therefore, it was an excellent candidate for wound dressing.

pH-Responsive Smart Wettability Surface with Dual Bactericidal and Releasing Properties

Biomaterial-associated infections caused by pathogenic bacteria have important implications on human health. This study presents the design and preparation of a smart surface with pH-responsive wettability. The smart surface exhibited synergistic antibacterial function, with high liquid repellency against bacterial adhesion and highly effective bactericidal activity. The wettability of the surface can switch reversibly between superhydrophobicity and hydrophobicity in response to pH; this controls bacterial adhesion and release. Besides, the deposited silver nanoparticles of the surface were also responsible for bacterial inhibition. Benefiting from the excellent liquid repellency, the surface could highly resist bacterial adhesion after immersing in a bacterial suspension for 10 s (85%) and 1 h (71%). Adhered bacteria can be easily eliminated using deposited silver nanoparticles during the subsequent treatment of alkaline bacterial suspension, and the ratio of deactivated bacteria was above 75%. After the pH returned to neutral, the deactivated bacteria can be easily released from the surface. This antibacterial surface showed an improved bacterial removal efficiency of about 99%. The results shed light on future antibacterial applications of the smart surface combining both bactericidal and adhesion-resistant functionalities.
