Colloidal Quantum Dots for Explosive Detection: Trends and Perspectives

Sensitive, accurate, and reliable detection of explosives has become one of the major needs for international security and environmental protection. Colloidal quantum dots, because of their unique chemical, optical, and electrical properties, as well as easy synthesis route and functionalization, have demonstrated high potential to meet the requirements for the development of suitable sensors, boosting the research in the field of explosive detection. Here, we critically review the most relevant research works, highlighting three different mechanisms for explosive detection based on colloidal quantum dots, namely photoluminescence, electrochemical, and chemoresistive sensing. We provide a comprehensive overview and an extensive discussion and comparison in terms of the most relevant sensor parameters. We highlight advantages, limitations, and challenges of quantum dot-based explosive sensors and outline future research directions for the advancement of knowledge in this surging research field.

Alginate-modified surfactants functionalized metal-organic framework-based fluorescent film sensors for detection and adsorption of volatile aldehydes in water

Volatile aldehydes have an adverse impact on both human health and the environment, therefore, a fast, straightforward, highly accurate detection technique for the simultaneous detection and removal of several aldehydes is eagerly anticipated. Herein, novel APGF@ZIF-8 and APOF@ZIF-8 sensing materials were developed by coating fluorescent alginate-modified surfactants (APGF and APOF) into the ZIF-8 MOFs to produce quite porous fluorescent sensors (SBET up to 1519 m2/g). The detection capacity of the prepared sensors for benzaldehyde, glyoxal, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde has been examined. The detection mechanism was suggested as hydrogen bonding formation between the sensors and volatile aldehydes as confirmed by Gaussian calculations. All the fluorescence spectra of aldehydes display remarkable linear detection relationships in the range of 0.05-200 μM with the limits of detection (LOD) values in the range of 0.001-0.18 μM (0.106-10.44 ppb). These sensors were utilized successfully to detect multiple volatile aldehydes in river water samples with satisfactory recoveries of 96-107 %. Interestingly, fluorescent APGF@ZIF-8/CS and APOF@ZIF-8/CS films as portable disposable removal techniques for benzaldehyde, glyoxal, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde from water were fabricated. APOF@ZIF-8/CS exhibited an excellent formaldehyde adsorption capacity of 58.30 mg/g and an adsorption removal efficiency of 93.5 %. The adsorption process of biosorbent on various aldehydes was fitted by Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The adsorption kinetics followed Pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Fluorescence Naphthalene Cationic Schiff Base Reusable Paper as a Sensitive and Selective for Heavy Metals Cations Sensor: RSM, Optimization, and DFT Modelling

Heavy metals are particularly damaging contaminants in the environment, and even trace concentrations represent a risk to human health due to their toxicity. To detect the heavy metals of Mn2+ and Co2+ ions, a novel selective reusable paper-based Fluorescence naked-eye sensor based on naphthalene cationic Schiff base (NCSB) was synthesized and confirmed using FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, and MS tools. Based on a blue to colorless color change in the aqueous solution, the NCSB sensor is utilized to Mn2+ and Co2+ cations selectively among other metal ions (Fe2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, Sn2+ and Cr3+). In the aqueous medium, the NCSB sensor displayed high sensitivity, with limits of detection (LOD) values of 0.014 µM (14.08 nM) and 0.041 µM (41.47 nM) for Mn2+ and Co2+ cations, respectively. The paper-based sensor naked-eye detected Mn2+ and Co2+ cations in water at concentrations as low as 0.65 µM (65 nM) and 0.086 µM (86 nM), respectively. It was discovered that 5 min of incubation time and a pH range of 7 to 11 were optimal for the complexation reaction between the Mn2+ and Co2+ ions and the NCSB sensor. Through a static quenching process, the interaction of the different metal ions with the Schiff base group in the NCSB molecule results in the development of a ground-state non-fluorescent complex. NCSB sensor was also successfully applied in analysis of Mn2+ and Co2+ in environmental water with good recoveries of 94.8-105.9%. The theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) studies are in support of experimental interpretations. The links between the input factors and the anticipated response were evaluated using the quadratic model of the response surface methodology (RSM) modeling.

A Novel Fluorescent Probe for the Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is one of the important reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is closely related to many pathological and physiological processes in living organisms. Excessive H₂O₂ can lead to cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other diseases, so it is necessary to detect H₂O₂ in living cells. Since this work designed a novel fluorescent probe to detect the concentration of H₂O₂, the H₂O₂ reaction group arylboric acid was attached to the fluorescein 3-Acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin as a specific recognition group for the selective detection of hydrogen peroxide. The experimental results show that the probe can effectively detect H₂O₂ with high selectivity and measure cellular ROS levels. Therefore, this novel fluorescent probe provides a potential monitoring tool for a variety of diseases caused by H₂O₂ excess.

Chromophoric Ion Receptor-Decorated Porous Monolithic Polymer for the Solid-State Naked Eye Sensing of Hg(II): An Experimental and Theoretical Approach

The current work presents a perspective to obliterate toxic Hg(II) from an aqueous environment, a strategic environmental remediation and decontamination measure. We report a simple, efficient, and reusable solid-state visual sensing strategy for the selective detection and quantitative recovery of ultratrace Hg(II). The capture of Hg(II) ions was effectuated using a macro-/mesoporous polymer monolith uniformly decorated with an azo-based chromophoric ion receptor, i.e., 7-((1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)diazenyl)quinolin-8-ol (BIDQ). The porous polymer template was synthesized through free radical polymerization of gylcidylmethacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, leading to distinct structural and surface properties that offer exclusive solid-state colorimetric selectivity for Hg(II) upon restricted spatial dispersion of the ion receptor. The sensor provides a broad linear response range of 1-200 μg/L, with an outstanding detection limit of 0.2 μg/L for Hg(II) ions, thus effectuating reliable and reproducible sensing. Optimizing analytical parameters such as solution pH, receptor concentration, sensor quantity, kinetics, temperature, and matrix interference proved to be promising for the real-time monitoring of toxic mercury ions from aqueous/industrial systems, with maximum response in the pH range of 7.5-8.0, with a response time of ≤80 s. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to study the electronic structure of BIDQ upon chelating with Hg(II) ions, using 6-311G and LAND2Z basis sets.

A highly sensitive electrochemical biosensor for Hg2+ based on entropy-driven DNA walker-based amplification

Herein, a sensitive electrochemical biosensor based on an enzyme-free and entropy-driven DNA walker is presented for the determination of Hg²⁺. This biosensor uses Hg²⁺ as a key to induce a mismatch between thymine-rich oligonucleotides to start the DNA walker, and it utilizes the entropy change of the sensing system to continuously drive the hybridization of oligonucleotides as a driving force for its walking. As the DNA walker runs, the detection signal is amplified to improve the sensitivity of the biosensor. Square wave voltammetry (SWV) of this biosensor shows a linear response of the methylene blue (MB) oxidation signal with an increase of Hg²⁺ concentration in the range of 0 to 80 nM with a detection limit of 0.136 nM, which satisfactorily meets the sensitivity requirement of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The biosensor also exhibits excellent selectivity over a spectrum of interfering ions and performs well in real water samples, suggesting that it is a promising candidate for Hg²⁺ detection.

Ultrafast fluorescence probe to H2O2 vapor based on organic-inorganic hybrid silica nanoparticles

A kind of organic-inorganic hybrid silica nanoparticles loaded with 1,8-naphthalimide borate ester (NIB@SiO₂) was used to detect trace hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) vapor via turn-off mechanism. The detailed studies showed that utilizing silica nanoparticles can improve the adsorption properties and hydrophilicity of the sensing film, accelerate the deboronation reaction between the sensing material and H₂O_2, and then shorten the response time successively, which is always the disturbing challenge for this deboronation-type fluorescent probe to H₂O₂ vapor. The fluorescence of NIB@SiO₂ film was quenched greatly under H₂O₂ saturated vapor within 5 s at room temperature and limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be 184 ppt, which are among the best reported results. Thus, this study provides an ultrafast and highly sensitive organic-inorganic hybrid fluorescent probe to H₂O₂ vapor, moreover, a new design strategy for promising H₂O₂ fluorescent probe is revealed.

Controlling the ligands of CdZnTe quantum dots to design a super simple ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor for silver ion detection

A super simple ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor has been fabricated by controlling the ligands of CdZnTe quantum dots (QDs), allowing the sensitive and visual detection of silver ions (Ag⁺). The green-emitting L-cysteine-protected CdZnTe QDs (Lcys-CdZnTe QDs) had a specific response to Ag⁺ and were used as the reporting probe, while the red-emitting N-acetyl-L-cysteine-protected CdZnTe QDs (NAC-CdZnTe QDs) showed no obvious response to all tested metal ions and were selected as the reference probe. Simply mixing them without any encapsulated synthesis ultimately produced a time-saving, low-cost detection method, allowing the sensitive and visual detection of Ag⁺ in samples. The proposed nanosensor exhibited a linear range of 0.5-4.0 μM along with a detection limit of 0.17 μM, and has been successfully applied in real tap water and lake water samples. This nanosensor also showed obvious color changes in the detection process and has potential in visual semi-quantitative detection. Our approach may provide a general and feasible strategy for designing ratiometric fluorescence nanosensors, which will attract a wide range of interest in sensing-related fields.

Ultrasensitive and turn-on homogeneous Hg2+ sensing based on a target-triggered isothermal cycling reaction and dsDNA-templated copper nanoparticles

In this work, an ultrasensitive and turn-on sensor for homogeneous Hg2+ detection has been constructed based on a target-triggered isothermal cycling reaction and rapid label-free signal output with dsDNA-templated copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). As the key component of the sensor, a hairpin DNA without any labels was designed to contain different functional sequence segments and to resist digestion by exonuclease due to the protruding 3'-terminus. In the presence of Hg2+, the formation of a T-Hg2+-T structure turned the protruding 3'-terminus of the hairpin DNA to a blunt end that could be efficiently digested by Exo III, accompanied by Hg2+ release, followed by another digestion cycle. Hence, the Hg2+-triggered isothermal cycling reaction accumulated numerous dsDNA templates that facilitated fluorescent CuNP generation and finally output an amplified signal used to identify the target. This protocol is capable of Hg2+ sensing in a concentration range of 5 orders of magnitude with a detection limit down to 3.9 pM. The as-constructed sensor also revealed high selectivity, as well as satisfactory results in recovery experiments of Hg2+ detection in real water samples.
