Electrochemical Synthesis of S-Aryl Dibenzothiophenium Triflates as Precursors for Selective Nucleophilic Aromatic (Radio)fluorination

A novel electrosynthetic approach to aryl dibenzothiophenium salts, including the direct intramolecular formation of a C-S bond in a metal-free, electrochemical key step under ambient conditions, is reported. The broad applicability of this method is demonstrated with 14 examples, including nitrogen-containing heterocycles in isolated yields up to 72%. The resulting sulfonium salts can be used as precursors for fluorine labeling to give [18F]fluoroarenes as found in PET tracer ligands.

Electrochemical Multicomponent Synthesis of Alkyl Alkenesulfonates using Styrenes, SO2 and Alcohols

A novel electrochemical approach to access alkyl alkenesulfonates via a multicomponent reaction was developed. The metal-free method features easy-to-use SO2 stock solution forming monoalkylsulfites from alcohols with an auxiliary base in-situ. These intermediates serve a dual role as starting materials and as supporting electrolyte enabling conductivity. Anodic oxidation of the substrate styrene, radical addition of these monoalkylsulfites and consecutive second oxidation and deprotonation preserve the double bond and form alkyl β-styrenesulfonates in a highly regio- and stereoselective fashion. The feasibility of this electrosynthetic method is demonstrated in 44 examples with yields up to 81 %, employing various styrenes and related substrates as well as a diverse set of alcohols. A gram-scale experiment underlines the applicability of this process, which uses inexpensive and readily available electrode materials.

Linker-Guided Growth of Single-Crystal Covalent Organic Frameworks

The core features of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystallinity and porosity. However, the synthesis of single-crystal COFs with monomers of diverse reactivity and adjustment of their pore structures remain challenging. Here, we show that linkers that can react with a node to form single-crystal COFs can guide other linkers that form either COFs or amorphous polymers with the node to gain single-crystal COFs with mixed components, which are homogeneous on the unit cell scale with controlled ratios. With the linker-guided crystal growth method, we created nine types of single-crystal COFs with up to nine different components, which are more complex than any known crystal. The structure of the crystal adapted approximately to that of the main component, and its pore volume could be expanded up to 8.8%. Different components lead to complex and diverse pore structures and offer the possibilities to gain positive synergies, as exemplified by a bicomponent COF with 2200 and 733% SO2 uptake capacity of that of the two pure-component counterparts at 298 K and 0.002 bar. The selectivity for separation of SO2/CO2 ranges from 1230 to 4247 for flue gas based on ideal adsorbed solution theory, recording porous crystals. The bicomponent COF also exhibits a 1300% retention time of its pure-component counterparts for SO2 in a dynamic column breakthrough experiment for deep desulfurization.

An efficient and mild oxidative approach from thiols to sulfonyl derivatives with DMSO/HBr

A mild and practical method for synthesizing sulfonyl derivatives, which have a wide range of applications in pharmaceuticals, materials, and organic synthesis, was described through the oxidative functionalization of thiols with DMSO/HBr. The simple conditions, low cost and ready availability of DMSO/HBr, as well as the versatility of the transformations, make this strategy very powerful in synthesizing a variety of sulfonyl derivatives including sulfonamides, sulfonyl fluorides, sulfonyl azides, and sulfonates. Mechanistic studies revealed that DMSO served as the terminal oxidant, and HBr acted as both a nucleophile and a redox mediator to transfer the oxygen atom.

One-Pot Synthesis of Sulfonamides from Unactivated Acids and Amines via Aromatic Decarboxylative Halosulfonylation

The coupling of carboxylic acids and amines to form amide linkages is the most commonly performed reaction in the pharmaceutical industry. Herein, we report a new strategy that merges these traditional amide coupling partners to generate sulfonamides, important amide bioisosteres. This method leverages copper ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) to convert aromatic acids to sulfonyl chlorides, followed by one-pot amination to form the corresponding sulfonamide. This process requires no prefunctionalization of the native acid or amine and extends to a diverse set of aryl, heteroaryl, and s-rich aliphatic substrates. Further, we extend this strategy to the synthesis of (hetero)aryl sulfonyl fluorides, which have found utility as "click" handles in chemical probes and programmable bifunctional reagents. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of these protocols in pharmaceutical analogue synthesis.

Counter Electrode Reactions-Important Stumbling Blocks on the Way to a Working Electro-organic Synthesis

Over the past two decades, electro-organic synthesis has gained significant interest, both in technical and academic research as well as in terms of applications. The omission of stoichiometric oxidizers or reducing agents enables a more sustainable route for redox reactions in organic chemistry. Even if it is well-known that every electrochemical oxidation is only viable with an associated reduction reaction and vice versa, the relevance of the counter reaction is often less addressed. In this Review, the importance of the corresponding counter reaction in electro-organic synthesis is highlighted and how it can affect the performance and selectivity of the electrolytic conversion. A selection of common strategies and unique concepts to tackle this issue are surveyed to provide a guide to select appropriate counter reactions for electro-organic synthesis.

Scalable, Chemoselective Nickel Electrocatalytic Sulfinylation of Aryl Halides with SO 2

Simple access to aryl sulfinates from aryl iodides and bromides is reported using an inexpensive Ni‐electrocatalytic protocol. The reaction exhibits a broad scope, uses stock solution of simple SO₂ as sulfur source, and can be scaled up in batch and recycle flow settings. The limitations of this reaction are clearly shown and put into context by benchmarking with state‐of‐the‐art Pd‐based methods.

Robust and Self-Cleaning Electrochemical Production of Periodate

Periodate, a platform oxidizer, can be electrochemically recycled in a self-cleaning process. Electrosynthesis of periodate is well established at boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes. However, recovered iodate and other iodo species for recycling can contain traces of organic impurities from previous applications. For the first time, it was shown that the organic impurities do not hamper the electrochemical re-oxidation of used periodate. In a hydroxyl-mediated environment, the organic compounds form CO₂ and H₂ O during the degradation process. This process is often referred to as "cold combustion" and provides orthogonal conditions to periodate synthesis. To demonstrate the strategy, different dyes, pharmaceutically active ingredients, and iodine compounds were added as model contaminations into the process of electrochemical periodate production. UV/Vis spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (MS) were used to monitor the degradation of organic molecules, and liquid chromatography-MS was used to control the purity of periodate. As a representative example, dimethyl 5-iodoisophthalate (2 mm), was degraded in 90, 95, and 99 % while generating 0.042, 0.054, and 0.082 kilo equiv. of periodate, respectively. In addition, various organic iodo compounds could be fed into the periodate generation for upcycling such iodo-containing waste, for example, contrast media.

Metal- and oxidant-free electrochemically promoted oxidative coupling of amines

The selective oxidation of amines into imines is a priority research topic in organic synthesis and has attracted much attention over the past few decades. However, the oxidation of amines generally suffers from the drawback of transition-metal, even noble-metal catalysts. Thus, the strategy of metal- and oxidant-free selective synthesis of imines is highly desirable yet largely unmet. This paper unravels a metal-free and external oxidant-free electrochemical strategy for the oxidative coupling methodology of amines. This general transformation is compatible with various functional amines and led to functionalized imines in moderate to satisfactory yields.

Advances in photochemical and electrochemical incorporation of sulfur dioxide for the synthesis of value-added compounds

Organic photochemistry and electrochemistry currently receive tremendous attention in organic synthesis as both techniques enable the reagent-less activation of organic molecules without using expensive and hazardous redox reagents. The incorporation of SO₂ into organic molecules is a relatively modern research topic, which likewise gains immense popularity since the discovery of the SO₂ surrogate DABSO. Sulfur-containing organic molecules are omnipresent in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. This review covers the recent progress in electrochemical and photochemical methodologies for the incorporation and uses of SO₂ in the synthesis of value-added compounds. Additionally, different work techniques are demonstrated for the synthetic application of SO₂.
