Abstract
The embellishing of the macrocycle core with sulfur substituents of varied sterical requirements changes the structural dynamics of chiral, triangular polyimines. Despite their formal high symmetry, these compounds adopt diverse conformations, in which the macrocycle core represents a non-changeable unit. DFT calculations reveal that the mutual arrangement of sulfur-containing substituents is controlled mainly by sterical interactions. The presence of sulfur atoms affects the chiroptical properties of these compounds and causes a red shift of respective absorption bands compared to the basic trianglimine. Unexpectedly, the aromatic fragments attached to the sulfur atom have less impact on ECD spectra, visible only in particular spectral regions. Such a possibility to adapt various conformations is also seen in the crystalline phase; however, a stiff basic unit - the triangular macrocycle core - caused macrocycles' self-assembly into columnar-like aggregates. In the crystal lattice, around the macrocycle having bulky SCPh3 groups, a space filled with solvent is formed; however, the macrocycle's internal cavity is closed and unavailable for guest molecules. Titration of the solutions of basic SBn-substituted imine and amine macrocycles by AgOTf results in significant changes in the ECD spectra, confirming possible binding interactions between macrocycle and metal cations.

Abstract
Chiral macrocycles have emerged as attractive media for chromatographic enantioseparation due to their excellent host-guest recognition properties. In this study, a new chiral stationary phase (CSP) based on 1,1'-binaphthyl chiral polyimine macrocycle (CPM) was reported. The CPM was synthesized by one-step aldehyde-amine condensation of (S)-2,2'-dihydroxy-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-3,3'-dicarboxaldehyde with 1,2-phenylenediamine and bonded on thiolated silica via the thiol-ene click reaction to afford the CSP. The enantioseparation performance of the CSP was evaluated by separating different types of racemates including alcohols, esters, ketones, amides, organic acids, and ethers in both normal-phase (NP) and reversed-phase (RP) elution modes. As a result, enantioseparations of 10 and 15 racemates were achieved in the two elution modes, respectively. Meanwhile, the effects of chromatographic conditions on separation, such as mobile phase composition and injection mass, were studied in detail. Moreover, a comparison of the proposed CSP for the separation of the tested racemates with commercial Chiralcel OD-H and Chiralpak AD-H columns was also conducted, and results revealed that the proposed CSP can achieve some enantioseparations that cannot be achieved by the two commercial columns. This study indicates that the chiral macrocycle is a promising chiral selector for high-performance liquid chromatography.

Abstract
Macrocyclic compounds such as crown ethers and cyclodextrins play an important role in the field of chromatography and show excellent separation performance. The design of simple and convenient methods for the efficient synthesis of novel chiral macrocycles for chromatographic separation is of great significance. In this work, a novel chiral polyimine macrocycle (PIMC) was designed and synthesized by the simply one-step reaction of 2,6-diformyl-4-tert-butylphenol with (S)-(-)-1,2-propanediamine. Then, it was bonded onto silica by the thiol-ene click reaction to construct a new chiral stationary phase (CSP) for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The chiral separation performance of the proposed CSP was examined by separating various racemates in the normal-phase (NP) and reversed-phase (RP) HPLC. In total, twelve and nine racemates, including ethers, esters, amines, alcohols, organic acids, ketones, and epoxides, were separated to varying degrees via NP-HPLC and RP-HPLC, respectively, Moreover, the CSP offered good chiral separation complementarity to Chiralcel OD-H and Chiralpak AD-H columns for resolution of these test racemates, and it can separate several racemic compounds that either cannot be separated or cannot be separated well be separated by the two commercially available columns. After the column was used for hundreds of injections, the relative standard deviations of the retention time and resolution were below 0.56 % and 0.45 %, respectively, showing the good reproducibility and stability of the CSP. This study provides a simple and convenient approach to synthesize a novel chiral macrocycle and CSP and also indicates the broad application prospects of such chiral PIMCs in HPLC chiral separation.

Abstract
Solid-state materials formed from discrete imine macrocycles have potential in industrial separations, but dynamic behaviour during both synthesis and crystallisation makes them challenging to exploit. Here, we explore opportunities for structural control by investigating the dynamic nature of a C-5 brominated isotrianglimine in solution and under crystallisation conditions. In solution, the equilibrium between the [3 + 3] and the less reported [2 + 2] macrocycle was investigated, and both macrocycles were fully characterised. Solvent templating during crystallisation was used to form new packing motifs for the [3 + 3] macrocycle and a previously unreported [4 + 4] macrocycle. Finally, chiral self-sorting was used to demonstrate how crystallisation conditions can not only influence packing arrangements but also shift the macrocycle equilibrium to yield new structures. This work thus exemplifies three strategies for exploiting dynamic behaviour to form isotrianglimine materials, and highlights the importance of understanding the dynamic behaviour of a system when designing and crystallising functional materials formed using dynamic covalent chemistry.

Abstract
Hydrocarbon separation is an important process in the field of petrochemical industry, which provides a variety of raw materials for industrial production and a strong support for the development of national economy. However, traditional separation processes involve huge energy consumption. Adsorptive separation based on nonporous adaptive crystal (NAC) materials is considered as an attractive green alternative to traditional energy-intensive separation technologies due to its advantages of low energy consumption, high chemical and thermal stability, excellent selective adsorption and separation performance, and outstanding recyclability. Considering the exceptional potential of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation, this review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in various supramolecular host-based NACs. Moreover, the current challenges and future directions are illustrated in detail. It is expected that this review will provide useful and timely references for researchers in this area. Based on a large number of state-of-the-art studies, the review will definitely advance the development of NAC materials for hydrocarbon separation and stimulate more interesting studies in related fields.

Abstract
A weak CH/O hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) with both rigidity and flexibility that could easily and reversibly switch from a non-crystalline to a crystalline phase was constructed. The specific solvent molecule acts as a "key" to control the crystallinity, while the highly rigid triangle macrocycle as the building block is the "lock". The introduction and removal of the "key" could influence the local flexibility of the whole framework and lead to switchable crystallinity. Furthermore, the obtained HOF exhibits excellent separation efficiency for benzene and cyclohexane (94.4 %).

Abstract
The introduction of urea or thiourea functionality to the macrocycle skeleton represents an alternative way to control conformational dynamics of chiral, polyamines of a figure-shaped periodical structure. Formally highly symmetrical, these macrocycles may adapt diverse conformations, depending on the nature of an amide linker and on a substitution pattern within the aromatic units. The type of heteroatom X in the N-C(═X)-N units present in each vertex of the macrocycle core constitutes the main factor determining the chiroptical properties. In contrast to the urea-containing derivatives, the electronic circular dichroism of thioureas is controlled by the chiral neighborhood closest to the chromophore. The dynamically induced exciton couplet is observed when the biphenyl chromophores are present in the macrocycle core. In the solid state, the seemingly disordered molecules may create ordered networks stabilized by intermolecular S···halogen, H···halogen, and S···H interactions. The presence of two bromine substituents in each aromatic unit in thiourea-derived trianglamine gives rise to a self-sorting phenomenon in the crystal. In solution, this particular macrocycle exists as a dynamic equimolar mixture of two conformational diastereoisomers, differing in the spatial (clockwise and counter clockwise) arrangement of the C-Br bonds. In the crystal lattice, macrocycles of a given handedness assemble into homohelical layers.

Abstract
Polyimine macrocycles are a new class of organic macrocycles with cyclic structures, well-defined molecular cavities, and multiple cooperative binding sites, which have recently aroused considerable research interest in molecular recognition and separation. Herein, we report the bonding of a [3+3] chiral polyimine macrocycle (H3L, C78H78N6O3) on thiol-functionalized silica gel using thiol-ene click chemistry to prepare a chiral stationary phase (CSP) for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The fabricated column exhibited excellent chiral separation capability under both normal-phase and reversed-phase conditions. Fourteen and 10 racemates were well resolved on the column in normal-phase mode (using n-hexane/isopropanol as the mobile phase) and reversed-phase mode (using methanol/water as the mobile phase), respectively, including alcohols, esters, ethers, ketones, aldehydes, epoxides and organic acids. Moreover, the column also shows good selectivity toward positional isomers. Six positional isomers (dinitrobenzene, chloroaniline, bromoaniline, iodoaniline, nitrobrobenzene and nitrochlorobenzene) were well separated on the column. In addition, the effects of the injection mass and mobile phase composition on the separation were investigated. The column shows good reproducibility and stability after multiple injections with the relative standard deviation (RSD) (n = 5) of the retention time and resolution being < 0.96 % and 0.65 %, respectively. This study indicates that this type of chiral polyimine macrocycles is a promising chiral selector for HPLC enantioseparation and will push forward the applications of more novel chiral macrocycles for chiral chromatographic separation.

Abstract
Macrocyclic nitrogen-containing compounds are versatile molecules. Supramolecular, noncovalent interactions of these macrocycles with guest molecules enables them to act as catalysts, fluorescent sensors, chiral or nonchiral selectors, or receptors of small molecules. In the solid state, they often display a propensity to form inclusion compounds. All of these properties are usually closely connected with the presence of nitrogen atoms in the macrocyclic ring. As most of the reviews published so far on macrocycles were written from the viewpoint of functional groups, synthetic methods, or the structure, search methods for literature reports in terms of the physicochemical properties of these compounds may be unobvious. In this minireview, the emphasis was put on the synthesis and applications of nitrogen-containing macrocyclic compounds, as they differ from their acyclic analogs, and at the same time are the driving force for further research.

Abstract
Chiral isotrianglimines were synthesized by the [3 + 3] cyclocondensation of (R,R)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane with C5-substituted isophthalaldehyde derivatives. The substituent's steric and electronic demands and the guest molecules' nature have affected the conformation of individual macrocycles and their propensity to form supramolecular architectures. In the crystal, the formation of a honeycomb-like packing arrangement of the simplest isotrianglimine was promoted by the presence of toluene or para-xylene molecules. A less symmetrical solvent molecule might force this arrangement to change. Polar substituents present in the macrocycle skeleton have enforced the self-association of isotrianglimines in the form of tail-to-tail dimers. These dimers could be further arranged in higher-order structures of the head-to-head type, which were held together by the solvent molecules. Non-associating isotrianglimine formed a container that accommodated acetonitrile molecules in its cavity. The calculated dimerization energies have indicated a strong preference for the formation of tail-to-tail dimers over those of the capsule type.
