Progress and Challenges of Vanadium Oxide Cathodes for Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries

Among the challenges related to rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) still not resolved are positive electrode materials with sufficient charge storage and rate capability as well as stability and raw material resources. Out of the materials proposed and studied so far, vanadium oxides stand out for these requirements, but significant further improvements are expected and required. They will be based on new materials and an improved understanding of their mode of operation. This report provides a critical review focused on this material, which is embedded in a brief overview on the general subject. It starts with the main strategic ways to design layered vanadium oxides cathodes for RMBs. Taking these examples in more detail, the typical issues and challenges often missed in broader overviews and reviews are discussed. In particular, issues related to the electrochemistry of intercalation processes in layered vanadium oxides; advantageous strategies for the development of vanadium oxide composite cathodes; their mechanism in aqueous, "wet", and dry non-aqueous aprotic systems; and the possibility of co-intercalation processes involving protons and magnesium ions are considered. The perspectives for future development of vanadium oxide-based cathode materials are finally discussed and summarized.

Low-Dimensional Vanadium-Based High-Voltage Cathode Materials for Promising Rechargeable Alkali-Ion Batteries

Owing to their rich structural chemistry and unique electrochemical properties, vanadium-based materials, especially the low-dimensional ones, are showing promising applications in energy storage and conversion. In this invited review, low-dimensional vanadium-based materials (including 0D, 1D, and 2D nanostructures of vanadium-containing oxides, polyanions, and mixed-polyanions) and their emerging applications in advanced alkali-metal-ion batteries (e.g., Li-ion, Na-ion, and K-ion batteries) are systematically summarized. Future development trends, challenges, solutions, and perspectives are discussed and proposed. Mechanisms and new insights are also given for the development of advanced vanadium-based materials in high-performance energy storage and conversion.

Operando XAFS on Hydrated Calcium Vanadium Bronze Cathode for Aqueous Zn-ion Storage

Multivalent ion storage and aqueous electrochemical systems continue to build interest for energy application. The Zn-ion system with 2 electron transfer and an ideal metal anode is a strong candidate but is still at the early stage of development. Using both in situ near-edge (XANES) and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, EXAFS, a nanostructured cathode material, Ca_x V₂ O₅ -H₂ O (CVO), was probed at the V-K absorption edge. This operando study reveals the local electronic and geometric structure changes for CVO during galvanostatic cycling as the active material in an aqueous Zn-ion cell. The XANES data provides a fine resolution to track the evolution of the vanadium oxidative state and near-neighbor coordination sphere showing subtle shifts and delocalized charge. The Zn-ion influence on the V-K absorption edge is visualized using a difference technique called Δμ. Coupled with theoretical calculations and modelling, the extended region extracted local bonding information further confirms excellent electronic and structural reversibility of this vanadium oxide bronze in an aqueous Zn-ion electrochemical cell.
