Ratiometric emission of Tb(III)-functionalized Cd-based layered MOFs for portable visual detection of trace amounts of diquat in apples, potatoes and corn

Diquat (DQ) is a typical bipyridine herbicide widely used to control weeds in fields and orchards. The severe toxicity of diquat poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received widespread attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties and applications in the detection of toxic and harmful substances. In this work, a two-dimensional (2D) Tb(III) functionalized MOF Tb(III)@1 (1 = [Cd(HTATB)(bimb)]n·H2O (Cd-MOF), H3TATB = 4,4',4″-triazine-2,4,6-tribenzoicacid, bimb = 1,4-bis((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene) has been prepared and characterized. Tb(III)@1 has excellent optical properties and high water and chemical stability. After the Tb(III) is fixed by the uncoordinated -COO- in the 1 framework, Tb(III)@1 emits the typical green fluorescence of the lanthanide ion Tb(III) through the "antenna effect". It is worth noting that Tb(III)@1 can be used as a dual emission fluorescence chemical sensor for the ratio fluorescence detection of pesticide DQ, exhibiting a relatively low detection limit of 0.06 nM and a wide detection range of 0-50 nM. After the addition of DQ, a rapid color change of Tb(III)@1 fluorescence from green to blue was observed due to the combined effects of IFE, FRET and dynamic quenching. Therefore, a simple test paper box has been designed for direct on-site determination of pesticide DQ. In addition, the developed sensor has been successfully applied to the detection of DQ in real samples (fruits a Yin-Xia Sun and Bo-Tao Ji contributed equally to this work and should be considered co-first authors.nd vegetables) with satisfactory results. The results indicate that the probe developed in this study has broad application prospects in both real sample detection and actual on-site testing.

Multiresponsive luminescent sensors for antibiotics and CrVI with two luminescent ZnII/CdII coordination complexes

Two new ZnII/CdII luminescent coordination polymers (CPs) based on the V-shaped bis(imidazole) ligand 3,6-bis (1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)-9-methyl-9H-carbazole (bbimc) with [1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid ligand (H2bpdc) have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions: {[Zn(bbimc)(bpdc)]·DMF·2.5H2O} (CP 1), {[Cd(bbimc)(bpdc)]·2DMF} (CP 2). CP 1 and CP 2 both display a uninodal 4-c unimodal sql topology 2D framework with vertex symbols of {44·62}. In addition, the two identical 2D nets of CP 2 were interpenetrated each other to form a 2D + 2D → 3D and generate a 2-fold interpenetrating architecture. Moreover, sensing investigations of CP 1 and CP 2 revealed that both of compounds can be used as a highly sensitive and selective multi-responsive luminescent sensor for sensing Cr2O72-, CrO42- and antibiotics (TC: Tetracycline; CTC: Chlortetracycline) in H2O by exhibiting fluorescence quenching with significant quenching constants (Ksv = 1.369 × 104 M-1 (Cr2O72-), 2.003 × 104 M-1 (CrO42-), 5.343 × 104 M-1 (TC), 8.706 × 104 M-1 (CTC) for CP 1 and 4.452 × 104 M-1 (Cr2O72-), 2.119 × 104 M-1 (CrO42-), 4.175 × 104 M-1 (TC), 1.257 × 105 M-1 (CTC) for CP 2). The detection limit are 0.67 μM (Cr2O72-), 0.48 μM (Cr2O72-), 0.23 μM (TC), 0.14 μM (CTC) for CP 1 and 0.28 μM (Cr2O72-), 0.54 μM (CrO42-), 0.31 μM (TC), 0.098 μM (CTC) for CP 2, respectively. In addition, the probable fluorescence quenching mechanism was studied through experiment and theoretical calculation and the co-existance of competitive absorption (CA) and photoinduced electron transfer (PET) progress contributed to such sensing processes.

Advances in metal-organic frameworks for water remediation applications

Rapid industrialization and agricultural development have resulted in the accumulation of a variety of harmful contaminants in water resources. Thus, various approaches such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and methods for sensing water contaminants have been developed to solve the problem of water pollution. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination networks comprising organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials having organic ligands attached to inorganic metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds. MOFs represent an emerging class of materials for application in water remediation owing to their versatile structural and chemical characteristics, such as well-ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and tunable sites. The present review is focused on recent advances in various MOFs for application in water remediation via the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water contaminants. The sensing of water pollutants using MOFs via different approaches, such as luminescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques, is also discussed. The high porosity and chemical tunability of MOFs are the main driving forces for their widespread applications, which have huge potential for their commercial use.

Spectroscopic and theoretical studies on a novel bis(salamo)-like probe for highly effective fluorimetric-colorimetric identification of Fe3+ and Cu2+ in aquo-organic medium

A novel bis(salamo)-type sensor FT for fluorescence-colorimetric recognition of Fe3+/Cu2+ has been created, which revealed significant fluorescent performance and colorimetric sensing ability for Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions, superior to other related competitive metal ions. Interestingly, the binding of the FT probe with Cu2+ ions manifested an instant color change from colorless to red in sunlight, which is detectable by the naked-eye, and a fluorescence turn-off response under UV light for Fe3+ and Cu2+. The results demonstrated that the probe exhibits better sensitivity, greater affinity and lower limit of detection leading to quick response time in an aquo-organic medium. The excited state property of the FT probe and in the presence of Cu2+/Fe3+ was evaluated on the basis of DFT & TD-DFT results. Furthermore, test strips have been provided for convenient monitoring of Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions by naked eye and fluorescence method.

A symmetric bis(salamo)-like fluorescent chemosensor for identifying HCO3- and CO32- and its application

In this work, we successfully designed and synthesized a methoxydisubstituted bis(salamo)-type fluorescent chemical sensor BS, which can be applied as a highly sensitive and selective fluorescence probe for HCO3- and CO32- detection. The LODs of HCO3- and CO32- were experimentally calculated to be 5.4068 × 10-8 M and 4.4517 × 10-8 M, respectively. After relevant experiments, the sensing mechanism was investigated. Moreover, the application of the sensor in practice is explored, and the sensor BS can be loaded on portable test strips for ion detection. In the field of ion detection, salamo-like chemical sensors have been less studied compared to other sensor molecules, especially for the recognition and detection of anions. Therefore, this study will to some extent contribute to expanding the application of salamo-like compounds.

Sensitive fluorescent detection of phosmet and chlortetracycline in animal-derived food samples based on a water-stable Cd(II) chain-based zwitterionic metal-organic framework

The residues of pesticides and antibiotics have always been a major concern in agriculture and food safety. In order to provide a new method for the rapid detection of organophosphorus pesticides and antibiotics, a novel Cd(II) chain-based zwitterionic metal-organic framework MOF 1 with high sensitivity fluorescence sensing performance was successfully synthesized. A series of researches showed that the water- and pH-stable bifunctional MOF 1 has a great ability to detect phosmet (PSM) and chlortetracycline (CTC) in water through fluorescence quenching effect, with high detection sensitivity, low detection limits (0.0124 μM and 0.0131 μM), short response time (40 s) and reusability. Practical application results revealed that MOF 1 could detect PSM and CTC in milk, beef, chicken and egg samples, with satisfactory recoveries (95.2%-103.7%). As a novel fluorescence probe, MOF 1, is known the first case that can detect PSM in animal-derived samples, and the first dual-function material capable of detecting PSM and CTC. Mechanism studies displayed that competitive absorption and photoinduced electron transfer clearly authenticate the high quenching performance of the material.

Wavelength-shift-based visual fluorescence sensing of aspartic acids using Eu/Gd-MOF through pH triggering

With the increasing demand for on-site detection, the current approach of building dual-emission or multi-emission luminescence sensors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) which possess the capacity of self-reference for numerous non-analyte factors falls short of meeting sensing requirements. Therefore, we have designed a novel strategy for constructing wavelength shift-based luminescence sensor named Eu/Gd(TCPP), which exhibits dual-emitting from metal ions Eu³⁺ and flexible rotating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) ligands H₄TCPP (2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine). This sensor was prepared by a simple, green and fast plasma synthesis method. It's worth noting that the fluorescence emission of Eu/Gd(TCPP) shows a specific wavelength shift from ligand peak, and a visual color change from red to blue within a pH range of 4 to 3. Moreover, various characterization data verified that the luminescence switching mechanism of Eu/Gd(TCPP) was attributed to the H⁺-induced collapse of the Eu/Gd(TCPP) crystal structure, followed by untwisting of free ligands that lose rigid MOFs confinement. This hindered the antenna effect from H₄TCPP to Ln³⁺ ions and restricted the rotation emission of ligand, resulting in the red-shifting of the ligand emission and corresponding luminescence switching. By tactfully utilizing the short-range pH response property of Eu/Gd(TCPP), highly sensitive and selective on-site visual detection of acidic aspartic acid can be achieved.

A Ni(II) Coordination Polymer as a Multifunctional Luminescent Sensor for Detection of UO22+, Cr2O72-, CrO42- and Nitrofurantoin

A new Ni coordination polymer [Ni(MIP)(BMIOPE)]_n (1) was constructed (BMIOPE = 4,4'-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)diphenyl ether, and H₂MIP = 5-methylisophthalic acid), possessing two-dimensional (2D) twofold parallel interwoven net structure with a 4⁴∙6² point symbol. Complex 1 has been successfully obtained based on mixed-ligand strategy. The fluorescence titration experiments revealed that complex 1 could act as multifunctional luminescent sensor to simultaneously detect UO₂²⁺, Cr₂O₇^2- and CrO₄^2-, and NFT (nitrofurantoin). The limit of detection (LOD) values for complex 1 are 2.86 × 10^-5, 4.09 × 10^-5, 3.79 × 10^-5 and 9.32 × 10^-5 M for UO₂²⁺, Cr₂O₇^2-, CrO₄^2- and NFT. The K_sv values are 6.18 × 10³, 1.44 × 10⁴, 1.27 × 10⁴ and 1.51 × 10⁴ M^-1 for NFT, CrO₄^2-, Cr₂O₇^2- and UO₂²⁺. Finally, the mechanism of its luminescence sensing is studied in detail. These results manifest that complex 1 is a multifunctional sensor for sensitive fluorescent UO₂²⁺, Cr₂O₇^2-, CrO₄^2- and NFT detection.

Water stable MOFs as emerging class of porous materials for potential environmental applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are extensively recognized for their wide applications in a variety of fields such as water purification, adsorption, sensing, catalysis and drug delivery. The fundamental characteristics of the majority of MOFs, such as their structure and shape, are known to be sensitively impacted by water or moisture. As a result, a thorough evaluation of the stability of MOFs in respect to factors linked to these property changes is required. It is quite rare for MOFs in their early stages to have strong water-stability, which is necessary for the commercialization and development of wider applications of this interesting material. Also, numerous applications in presence of water have progressed considerably as a "proof of concept" stage in the past and a growing number of water-stable MOFs (WSMOFs) have been discovered in recent years. This review discusses the variables and processes that affect the aqueous stability of several MOFs, including imidazolate and carboxylate frameworks. Accordingly, this article will assist researchers in accurately evaluating how water affects the stability of MOFs so that effective techniques can be identified for the advancement of water-stable metal-organic frameworks (WSMOFs) and for their effective applications toward a variety of fields.

Sensing and photocatalytic properties of a new 3D Co(ii) coordination polymer based on 1,1′-di(p-carboxybenzyl)-2,2′-biimidazole

One novel 3D interpenetrated Co(ii) CP acts as multi-functional chemosensors in detection of Fe3+, Cr2O72−, CrO42− and nitrofurantoin and is an effective and stable photocatalyst and displays excellent photo-catalytic properties.

A 2-fold interpenetrated zinc–organic framework with Lewis basic triazole sites: luminescence sensing of Fe3+ and Cr2O72−, and warm white-light emission by encapsulated Ln3+ ions

A 2-fold interpenetrated Zn-MOF with Lewis basic triazole sites shows selective luminescence sensing of Fe3+ and Cr2O72− and tunable white-light emission by encapsulated Ln3+ ions.
