Abstract
The quest for thermally stable energetic materials is pivotal in advancing the safety of applications ranging from munitions to aerospace. This perspective delves into the role of theoretical methodologies in interpreting and advancing the thermal stability of energetic materials. Quantum chemical calculations offer an in-depth understanding of the molecular and electronic structure properties of energetic compounds related to thermal stability. It is also essential to incorporate the surrounding interactions and their impact on molecular stability. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations provide detailed theoretical insights into the reaction pathways and the key intermediates during thermal decomposition in the condensed phase. Analyzing the kinetic barrier of rate-determining steps under various temperature and pressure conditions allows for a comprehensive assessment of thermal stability. Recent advances in machine learning have demonstrated their utility in constructing potential energy surfaces and predicting thermal stability for newly designed energetic materials. The machine learning-assisted high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) methodology can accelerate the discovery of novel energetic materials with improved properties. As a result, the newly identified and synthesized energetic molecule ICM-104 revealed excellence in performance and thermostability. Theoretical approaches are pivotal in elucidating the mechanisms underlying thermal stability, enabling the prediction and design of enhanced thermal stability for emerging EMs. These insights are instrumental in accelerating the development of novel energetic materials that optimally balance performance and thermal stability.

Abstract
Nitrogen heterocyclic scaffolds retain their leading position as valuable building blocks in material science, particularly for the design of small-molecule energetic materials. However, the search for more balanced combinations of directly linked heterocyclic cores is far from being exhausted and aims to reach ideally balanced high-energy substances. Herein, we present the synthetic route to novel pyrazole-furoxan framework enriched with nitro groups and demonstrate a promising set of properties, viz., good thermal stability, acceptable mechanical sensitivity, and high detonation performance. In-depth crystal analysis showed that the isomers having lower-impact sensitivity values in both types of regioisomeric pairs are those with the exocyclic furoxan oxygen atom being closer to the pyrazole ring. Owing to the favorable combination of high crystal densities (1.83-1.93 g cm-3), positive oxygen balance to CO (up to +13.9%), and high enthalpies of formation (322-435 kJ mol-1), the synthesized compounds show high calculated detonation velocities (8.4-9.1 km s-1) and excellent metal accelerating abilities. The incorporation of the 3-nitrofuroxan moiety increases the thermal stability (by ca. 20 °C) and decreases the mechanical sensitivity of target hybrid materials in both types of regioisomeric pairs. Simultaneously, the detonation performance of 3-nitrofuroxans is almost identical to that of 4-nitrofuroxans, highlighting the potential of the regioisomeric tunability in the future design of energetic materials.

Abstract
Layered energetic materials (LEMs) can effectively balance energy and mechanical sensitivity, making them a current research focus in the field of energetic materials. However, the influence of the layered stacking pattern on impact sensitivity is still unclear, leading to the lack of advanced design strategies for high-energy low-sensitivity LEMs. Herein, we first utilize novel indicators such as maximum plane separation and hydrogen bond dimension to perform high-throughput screening on over 106 candidate structures, resulting in 17 target crystals. A systematic analysis was then conducted on the relationships between the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of the weakest energy-storing bond at the molecular level, the intralayer hydrogen bond energy (HBE), and the sliding energy barrier (SEB) at the crystal level with impact sensitivity. The findings suggest that a material can have low sensitivity only if at least two of the three properties perform well, and the interlayer sliding resistance can be reduced by enhancing the intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions, which reasonably explains the experimental phenomena. More importantly, we developed a prediction model for the impact sensitivity of LEMs with a coefficient of determination of 0.88. Additionally, factors affecting HBE and SEB were identified, and a linear model was established based on molecular-level feature variables. Finally, a new strategy for designing high-energy low-sensitivity LEMs was proposed, namely, empowerment at the molecular scale and desensitization at the crystal scale. This study integrates high-throughput screening, multilevel structure-property relationship analysis, and mathematical model construction, offering new perspectives for the development of novel high-energy and low-sensitivity energetic materials.

Abstract
The electron density depletion associated with π-hole at the ring center typical of energetic compounds was clearly revealed by the molecular electrostatic potential (ESP). In addition, the spatial arrangement of NO2 groups appears to affect the ESP value in the ring center, and therefore sensitivity to detonation. Indeed, for monocyclic nitrobenzene compounds with the same number of NO2 groups, the ESP value in the ring center decreases as the NO2 groups are more closely spaced. As expected, the central rings become less aromatic as NO2 groups are added. The MCI, PDI, PLR, NICSzz(1), FLU indices are all strongly correlated with the ESP values observed in the ring center of the set of nitrobenzenes. Aromaticity indices based on electron delocalization criteria appear to be very sensitive to small variations in aromaticity. Among magnetic-based indices, only NICSzz(1) is capable to predict small changes in aromaticity. The PLR index derived from conceptual DFT is quite relevant for predicting small variations in aromaticity. According to our results, the most suitable aromaticity index is not based on a single criterion, and that selecting it is more subtle. Therefore, it is important to combine information from several criteria to obtain a more complete description of the aromaticity of the studied compounds.

Abstract
The sensitivity of energetic materials along different crystal directions is not the same and is anisotropic. In order to explore the difference in friction sensitivity of different surfaces, we calculated the structure, excess energy, surface energy, electronic structure, and the nitro group along (1 1 1), (1 1 0), (1 0 1), (0 1 1), (0 0 1), (0 1 0), and (1 0 0) surfaces of EDNA based on density functional theory. The analysis results showed that relative to other surfaces, the (0 0 1) surface has the shortest N-N average bond length, largest N-N average bond population, smallest excess energy and surface energy, widest band gap, and the largest nitro group charge value, which indicates that the (0 0 1) surface has the lowest friction sensitivity compared to other surfaces. Furthermore, the conclusions obtained by analyzing the excess energy are consistent with the results of the N-N bond length and bond population, band gap, and nitro charge. Therefore, we conclude that the friction sensitivity of different surfaces of EDNA can be evaluated using excess energy.

Abstract
Melt-cast explosive 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) crystal and its cocrystals DNAN/1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) and DNAN/2-nitroaniline (NA) were used to identify the effects of cocrystallization on the crystal structure, non-covalent interactions, and melting points of the DNAN crystal through density functional theory and molecular dynamics. The components DNB and NA with subtle structure variations between the nitro group and amino group can significantly affect the non-covalent interactions, especially the π-π stacking and H-bonds, which can lead to different crystal stacking styles. The melting points of the DNAN crystal are decreased through the cocrystallization, which expands the utilization of the DNAN-based melt cast explosives. Our study deciphers the effects caused by the cocrystallization on the structure and properties of melt cast explosives and may help to design and optimize novel melt-cast explosives.

Abstract
5-aminotetrazole is one of the most marked high-nitrogen tetrazole compounds. However, the structural modification of 5-aminotetrazole with nitro groups often leads to dramatically decreased molecular stability, while the N-bridging functionalization does not efficiently improve the density and performance. In this paper, we report on a straightforward approach for improving the density of 5-aminotetrazole by introducing 4-amino-3,5-dinitropyrazole. The following experimental and calculated properties show that nitropyrazole functionalization competes well with energetic performance and mechanic sensitivity. All compounds were thoroughly characterized using IR and NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Two energetic compounds (DMPT-1 and DMPT-2) were further confirmed by implementing single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Compound DMPT-1 featured a high crystal density of 1.806 g cm-3, excellent detonation velocity (vD = 8610 m s-1), detonation pressure (P = 30.2 GPa), and impact sensitivity of 30 J.

Abstract
In the niche area of energetic materials, a balance between energy and safety is extremely important. To address this "energy-safety contradiction", energetic cocrystals have been introduced. The investigation of the synthesis methods, characteristics, and efficacy of energetic cocrystals is of the utmost importance for optimizing their design and development. This review covers (i) various synthesis methods for energetic cocrystals; (ii) discusses their characteristics such as structural properties, detonation performance, sensitivity analysis, thermal properties, and morphology mapping, along with other properties such as oxygen balance, solubility, and fluorescence; and (iii) performance with respect to energy contents (detonation velocity and pressure) and sensitivity. This is followed by concluding remarks together with future perspectives.

Abstract
Rearrangement reactions are efficient strategies in organic synthesis and contribute enormously to the development of energetic materials. Here, we report on the preparation of a fused energetic structure of 7-nitro-3,5-dihydro-4H-pyrazolo[4,3-d][1,2,3]triazin-4-one (NPTO) based on a novel Hofmann-type rearrangement. The 1,2,3-triazine unit was introduced into the fused bicyclic skeleton from a pyrazole unit for the first time. The new compound of NPTO was fully characterized using multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis as well as X-ray diffraction studies. The thermal behaviors and detonation properties of NPTO were investigated through a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC-TG) approach and EXPLO5 program-based calculations, respectively. The calculation results showed similar detonation performances between NPTO and the energetic materials of DNPP and ANPP, indicating that NPTO has a good application perspective in insensitive explosives and propellants.

Abstract
Positive values of electrostatic potentials above the central regions of the molecular surface are strongly related to the high sensitivities of highly energetic molecules. The influence of aromatic system size on the positive values of electrostatic potentials and bond dissociation energies of C-NO2 bonds was studied by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on a series of polycyclic nitroaromatic molecules. Calculations performed at PBE/6-311G** level showed that with the increase of the aromatic system size, values of positive electrostatic potential above the central areas of selected energetic molecules decrease from 32.78 kcal mol-1 (1,2,4,5-tetranitrobenzene) to 15.28 kcal mol-1 (2,3,9,10-tetranitropentacene) leading to the decrease in the sensitivities of these molecules towards detonation. Results of the analysis of electrostatic potential maps were in agreement with the trends in bond dissociation energies calculated for C-NO2 bonds of studied nitroaromatic molecules. Bond dissociation energies values indicate that the C-NO2 bond in the molecule of 1,2,4,5-tetranitrobenzene (56.72 kcal mol-1) is weaker compared to the nitroaromatic molecules with the additional condensed aromatic rings and with a similar arrangement of -NO2 groups (59.75 kcal mol-1 in the case of 2,3,9,10-tetranitropentacene). The influence of the mutual arrangement of -NO2 groups on the sensitivity of nitroaromatic molecules was also analyzed. Results obtained within this study could be of great importance for the development of new classes of highly energetic molecules with lower sensitivity towards detonation.

Abstract
The existence of areas of strongly positive electrostatic potential in the central regions of the molecular surface of high-energy molecules is a strong indicator that these compounds are very sensitive towards detonation. Development of high-energy compounds with reduced sensitivity towards detonation and high efficiency is hard to achieve since the energetic molecules with high performance are usually very sensitive. Here we used Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to study a series of bis(acetylacetonato) and nitro-bis(acetylacetonato) complexes and to elucidate their potential application as energy compounds with moderate sensitivities. We calculated electrostatic potential maps for these molecules and analyzed values of positive potential in the central portions of molecular surfaces in the context of their sensitivity towards detonation. Results of the analysis of the electrostatic potential demonstrated that nitro-bis(acetylacetonato) complexes of Cu and Zn have similar values of electrostatic potential in the central regions (25.25 and 25.06 kcal/mol, respectively) as conventional explosives like TNT (23.76 kcal/mol). Results of analysis of electrostatic potentials and bond dissociation energies for the C-NO2 bond indicate that nitro-bis(acetylacetonato) complexes could be used as potential energetic compounds with satisfactory sensitivity and performance.
