Surface chemistry at the solid-solid interface: mechanically induced reaction pathways of C8 carboxylic acid monolayers on copper

Covalent-Organic Framework Nanomaterials: Energy Band Engineering Generating Ultrathin Lubrication Films for Excellent Lubrication

It is, in fact, inevitable for steel to be covered with a layer of iron oxides and/or peroxides on its surface. However, knowledge of its existence and functionality for tribological behaviors is usually ignored. Herein, covalent-organic framework nanomaterials (CONs) composed of three well-screened acceptors and a donor through the imide linkage were fabricated to explore their lubrication performances. The results indicate that the energy-level matching between CONs and iron oxides or peroxides leads to the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction structure at the rubbing interface. Also, the friction produces an internal electric field in the heterojunction, which drives the negative atomic/ionic species from the sliding interface to immigrate into the pore of CONs and resettle inside to engender the pinning effects, producing a fixed lubrication layer. Synchronously, it also attracts the free CONs in the base oil to form an easy-shear lubrication layer assembling onto the fixed one, producing a lubrication film with two layered configurations. Finally, the unique lubrication film, despite its thickness of a dozen nanometers, still exhibits impressive friction reduction and antiwear. This finding will inspire the technology to utilize the intrinsic surface nature of steel materials to exploit lubricant additives or modulate tribological behaviors.

Mechanistic model for quantifying the effect of impact force on mechanochemical reactivity

Conventional mechanochemical synthetic tools, such as ball mills, offer no methodology to quantitatively link macroscale reaction parameters, such as shaking frequency or milling ball radius, to fundamental drivers of reactivity, namely the force vectors applied to the reactive molecules. As a result, although mechanochemistry has proven to be a valuable method to make a wide variety of products, the results are seldom reproduceable between reactors, difficult to rationally optimize, and hard to ascribe to a specific reaction pathway. Here we have developed a controlled force reactor, which is a mechanochemical ball mill reactor with integrated force measurement and control during each impact. We relate two macroscale reactor parameters-impact force and impact time-to thermodynamic and kinetic transition state theories of mechanochemistry utilizing continuum contact mechanics principles. We demonstrate force controlled particle fracture of NaCl to characterize particle size evolution during reactions, and force controlled reaction between anhydrous copper(II) chloride and (1, 10) phenanthroline. During the fracture of NaCl, we monitor the evolution of particle size as a function of impact force and find that particles quickly reach a particle size of ∼100 μm largely independent of impact force, and reach steady state 10-100× faster than reaction kinetics of typical mechanochemical reactions. We monitor the copper(II) chloride reactivity by measuring color change during reaction. Applying our transition state theory developed here to the reaction curves of copper(II) chloride and (1, 10) phenanthroline at multiple impact forces results in an activation energy barrier of 0.61 ± 0.07 eV, distinctly higher than barriers for hydrated metal salts and organic ligands and distinctly lower than the direct cleavage of the CuCl bond, indicating that the reaction may be mediated by the higher affinity of Fe in the stainless steel vessel to Cl. We further show that the results in the controlled force reactor match rudimentary estimations of impact force within a commercial ball mill reactor Retsch MM400. These results demonstrate the ability to quantitatively link macroscale reactor parameters to reaction properties, motivating further work to make mechanochemical synthesis quantitative, predictable, and fundamentally insightful.

A Carbonized Zeolite/Chitosan Composite as an Adsorbent for Copper (II) and Chromium (VI) Removal from Water

To address Cu(II) and Cr(VI) water pollution, a carbonized zeolite/chitosan (C-ZLCH) composite adsorbent was produced via pyrolysis at 500 °C for two hours. C-ZLCH was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential measurements. The batch experiments were performed by varying the initial pH, concentration, and contact time. The optimal pH values for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) were 8.1 and 9.6, respectively. The highest adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) were 111.35 mg/g at 60 min and 104.75 mg/g at 90 min, respectively. The effects of chemicals such as sodium (Na⁺), glucose, ammonium (NH₄⁺), and acid red 88 (AR88) were also studied. Statistical analysis showed that sodium had no significant effect on Cu(II) removal, in contrast to Cr(VI) removal. However, there was a significant effect of the presence of glucose, ammonium, and AR88 on both Cu(II) and Cr(VI) removal. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic models were fitted using Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models for Cu(II) and Cr(VI), respectively.

Critical stresses in mechanochemical reactions

The rates of mechanochemical reactions are generally found to increase exponentially with applied stress. However, a buckling theory analysis of the effect of a normal stress on an adsorbate that is oriented perpendicularly to the surface that reacts by tilting suggests that a critical value of the stress should be required to initiate a mechanochemical reaction. This concept is verified by using density functional theory calculations to simulate the effect of compressing a homologous series of alkyl thiolate species on copper by a hydrogen-terminated copper counter-face. This predicts that a critical stress is indeed needed to initiate methyl thiolate decomposition, which has a perpendicular C-CH3 bond. In contrast, no critical stress is found for ethyl thiolate with an almost horizontal C-CH3 bond, while a critical stress is required to isomerize propyl thiolate from a trans to a cis configuration. These predictions are tested by measuring the mechanochemical reaction rates of these alkyl thiolates on a Cu(100) substrate by sliding an atomic force microscope tip over the surface and finding a critical stress of ∼0.43 GPa for methyl thiolate, ∼0.33 GPa for propyl thiolate, but no evidence of a critical stress for ethyl thiolate, in accord with the predictions. These results provide insights not only into mechanochemical reaction mechanisms on surfaces, but also on the origin of critical phenomena in stress-induced processes in general. It also suggests novel approaches to designing robust surface films that can resist wear and damage.
