The effect of separation of blocks on the crystallization kinetics and phase composition of poly(butylene adipate) in multi-block thermoplastic polyurethanes

Exploitation of a New Nucleating Agent by Molecular Structure Modification of Aryl Phosphate and Its Effect on Application Properties of the Polypropylene

In this work, a novel α-nucleating agent (NA) for polypropylene (PP) termed APAl-3C-12Li was prepared and evaluated compared with the commercially available type NA-21. For the synthesis of the organophosphate-type NA (APAl-3C), the -OH group of the acid part of NA-21 was substituted by the isopropoxy group. The structure of APAl-3C was analyzed by spectroscopy and element analysis, the results of which were consistent with the theoretical molecular formula. APAl-3C's thermal stability was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG), which showed only weak mass loss below 230 °C, meaning that it would not decompose during the processing of PP. The APAl-3C-12Li was used as a novel nucleating agent, studying its effects on crystallization, microstructure, mechanical and optical properties. Tests were performed in a PP random copolymer at different contents, in comparison to the commercial NA-21. The composite with 0.5 wt% APAl-3C-12Li has a similar crystallization temperature of 118.8 °C as with the addition of 0.5 wt% NA-21. An advantage is that the composite with the APAl-3C-12Li has a lower haze value of 9.3% than the counterpart with NA-21. This is due to the weaker polarity of APAl-3C-12Li after the introduction of methyl and better uniform dispersion in the PP matrix, resulting in stronger improvement of optical and mechanical properties.

Research progress in the preparation of mesophase pitch from fluid catalytic cracking slurry

For the preparation of high-performance pitch-based carbon fibers and other carbon materials, mesophase pitch serves as a high-quality precursor. Since FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) oil slurry is abundant in aromatic hydrocarbons and saturated hydrocarbons (about 95% in total), it has become an ideal choice for developing new carbon material products. This paper details the research progress of preparing mesophase asphalt with FCC oil slurry as a raw material from perspectives including the preparation method of synthesizing mesophase asphalt from FCC oil slurry, the impact factors of the formation process of mesophase asphalt and the industrial application of mesophase asphalt.

The Influence of Long-Time Storage on the Structure and Properties of Multi-Block Thermoplastic Polyurethanes Based on Poly(butylene adipate) Diol and Polycaprolactone Diol

A series of semi-crystalline multi-block thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), containing poly(butylene adipate) (PBA), polycaprolactone (PCL) and their equimolar mixture (PBA/PCL) as a soft segment was synthesized. The changes in the physical-mechanical and thermal properties of the materials observed in the course of a 36-month storage at room temperature were related to the corresponding structural evolution. The latter was monitored using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS) and mechanical tests (tensile strength test). The effects of the composition of the soft segment on the phase separation and crystallization of the soft segment were analyzed in detail. It was found that the melting temperature of the crystalline phase increases with storage time, which is associated with hindering of the phase separation of the hard and soft segments of the TPU samples as it was detected by FTIR.

Study on Mechanical Properties of Polyurethane Cross-Linked P(E-co-T)/PEG Blended Polyether Elastomer

To improve the mechanical properties of polyurethane cross-linked poly (ethylene oxide-co-tetrahydrofuran) (P(E-co-T)) elastomers at room temperature, using poly (ethylene oxide-co-tetrahydrofuran) and high-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) as raw materials and polyisocyanate N100 as curing agent, a series of polyurethane cross-linked blended polyether elastomers were prepared by changing the elastomer-curing parameter R value (n(-NCO)/n(-OH)) and P(E-co-T)/PEG ratio. Equilibrium swelling measurements showed that the chemical cross-linkage of the elastomers tended to decrease with the decreasing R value, the average molecular weight (Mc) of the network chain increased, and the density of the network chain (N0) decreased. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests showed that PEG chain segments within the elastomers crystallized at room temperature, while the crystallinity increased with decreasing R value and increasing PEG content. The mechanical property tests showed that the elongation at break tended to decrease with increasing R value; the tensile strength first increased and then decreased. At R value 0.9, the elastomer presented good comprehensive mechanical properties. In addition, the mechanical properties of polyurethane cross-linked P(E-co-T)/PEG blended polyether elastomer showed an increasing trend with the increase in PEG content when the curing parameter of 0.9 remained unchanged.
