Designing successful monodentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligands for asymmetric metal catalysis

Alternating Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization Promoted by Ruthenium Catalysts Bearing Unsymmetrical NHC Ligands

In this paper, Grubbs- and Hoveyda–Grubbs-type olefin metathesis catalysts featuring N-cyclopentyl/N’-mesityl backbone-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were synthesized. Their propensity to promote the alternating ring-opening metathesis copolymerization (ROMP) of norbornene (NBE) with cyclooctene (COE) or cyclopentene (CPE) was evaluated and compared to that shown by analogous N-cyclohexyl complexes. High degrees of chemoselectivity were achieved in both copolymerizations. The presence of the N-cyclopentyl substituent allowed for the achievement of up to 98% and 97% of alternating diads for NBE-COE and NBE-CPE copolymers, respectively, at low comonomer ratios. Density functional theory (DFT) studies showed that both the sterical and electronic effects of NHC ligands influence catalyst selectivity.

C2-Symmetric N-Heterocyclic Carbenes in Asymmetric Transition-Metal Catalysis

The last decades have witnessed a rapid growth of applications of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) in different chemistry fields. Due to their unique steric and electronic properties, NHCs have become a powerful tool in coordination chemistry, allowing the preparation of stable metal-ligand frameworks with both main group metals and transition metals. An overview on the use of five membered monodentate C2-symmetric N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) as ligands for transition-metal complexes and their most relevant applications in asymmetric catalysis is offered.

Enantio- and Regioselective Ni-Catalyzed para-C-H Alkylation of Pyridines with Styrenes via Intermolecular Hydroarylation

Direct asymmetric functionalization of the pyridyl C-H bond represents a longstanding challenge in organic chemistry. We herein describe the first enantioselective para-C-H activation of pyridines through the use of a Ni-Al bimetallic catalyst system and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand for intermolecular hydroarylation of styrenes. The reaction procceds in high to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98.5:1.5 er) and high site-selectivities for both styrene and pyridine components (up to >98:2). Consequently, a broad range of enantioenriched 1,1-diarylalkanes containing pyridine moieties could be prepared in a single step with 100% atom economy. Computational studies supported a mechanism involving a ligand-to-ligand H-transfer (LLHT) and reductive elimination sequence, with LLHT being the rate- and enantioselectivity-determining step. DFT studies indicate that the π-π stacking interaction between the NHC aryl fragment and trans-styrenes is critical for high reactivity and enantiocontrol.

Redox-Switchable Behavior of Transition-Metal Complexes Supported by Amino-Decorated N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

The coordination chemistry of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand IMes^(NMe2)2, derived from the well-known IMes ligand by substitution of the carbenic heterocycle with two dimethylamino groups, was investigated with d⁶ [Mn(I), Fe(II)], d⁸ [Rh(I)], and d¹⁰ [Cu(I)] transition-metal centers. The redox behavior of the resulting organometallic complexes was studied through a combined experimental/theoretical study, involving electrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. While the complexes [CuCl(IMes^(NMe2)2)], [RhCl(COD)(IMes^(NMe2)2)], and [FeCp(CO)₂ (IMes^(NMe2)2)](BF₄) exhibit two oxidation waves, the first oxidation wave is fully reversible but only for the first complex the second oxidation wave is reversible. The mono-oxidation event for these complexes occurs on the NHC ligand, with a spin density mainly located on the diaminoethylene NHC-backbone, and has a dramatic effect on the donating properties of the NHC ligand. Conversely, as the Mn(I) center in the complex [MnCp(CO)₂ ((IMes^(NMe2)2)] is easily oxidizable, the latter complex is first oxidized on the metal center to form the corresponding cationic Mn(II) complex, and the NHC ligand is oxidized in a second reversible oxidation wave.
