Unraveling the varied nature and roles of defects in hybrid halide perovskites with time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy

Bi-Directional Modification to Quench Detrimental Redox Reactions and Minimize Interfacial Energy Offset for NiOX/Perovskite-Based Solar Cells

The quality of the buried heterojunction of nickel oxide (NiOX)/perovskite is crucial for efficient charge carrier extraction and minimizing interfacial non-radiative recombination in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, NiOX has limitations as a hole transport layer (HTL) due to energy level mismatch, low conduction, and undesirable redox reactions with the perovskite layer, which impede power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term stability. In this study, para-amino 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoic acid (PATFBA) is proposed as a bifacial defect passivator to tailor the NiOX/perovskite interface. The acid group and adjacent fluorine atoms of PATFBA effectively passivate NiOX surface defects, thereby improving its Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio, hole extraction capability, and energy band alignment with perovskite, while also providing active sites for homogenous nucleation. Meanwhile, the amine and adjacent fluorine atomsstabilize the buried perovskite interface by passivating interfacial defects, resulting in higher crystalline perovskite films with supressed non-radaitive recombination. Furthermore, the PATFBA buffer layer prevents redox reactions between Ni3+ and perovskite.These synergistic bi-directional interactions lead to optimized inverted PSCs with a PCE of 20.51% compared to 16.89% for pristine devices and the unencapsulated PATFBA-modified devices exhibit outstanding thermal and long-term stability. This work provides a new engineering approach to buried interfaces through the synergy of functional groups.

Defect Passivation and Crystallization Regulation for Efficient and Stable Formamidinium Lead Iodide Solar Cells with Multifunctional Amidino Additive

Amidino-based additives show great potential in high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the role of different functional groups in amidino-based additives have not been well elucidated. Herein, two multifunctional amidino additives 4-amidinobenzoic acid hydrochloride (ABAc) and 4-amidinobenzamide hydrochloride (ABAm) are employed to improve the film quality of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) perovskites. Compared with ABAc, the amide group imparts ABAm with larger dipole moment and thus stronger interactions with the perovskite components, i.e., the hydrogen bonds between N…H and I- anion and coordination bonds between C = O and Pb2+ cation. It strengthens the passivation effect of iodine vacancy defect and slows down the crystallization process of α-FAPbI3, resulting in the significantly reduced non-radiative recombination, long carrier lifetime of 1.7 µs, uniformly large crystalline grains, and enhances hydrophobicity. Profiting from the improved film quality, the ABAm-treated PSC achieves a high efficiency of 24.60%, and maintains 93% of the initial efficiency after storage in ambient environment for 1200 hours. This work provides new insights for rational design of multifunctional additives regarding of defect passivation and crystallization control toward highly efficient and stable PSCs.

Eliminating Non-Corner-Sharing Octahedral for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

The metal halide (BX6)4- octahedron, where B represents a metal cation and X represents a halide anion, is regarded as the fundamental structural and functional unit of metal halide perovskites. However, the influence of the way the (BX6)4- octahedra connect to each other has on the structural stability and optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskite is still unclear. Here, the octahedral connectivity, including corner-, edge-, and face-sharing, of various CsxFA1-xPbI3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) perovskite films is tuned and reliably characterized through compositional and additive engineering, and with ultralow-dose transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the overall solar cell device performance, the charge carrier lifetime, the open-circuit voltage, and the current density-voltage hysteresis are all improved when the films consist of corner-sharing octahedra, and non-corner sharing phases are suppressed, even in films with the same chemical composition. Additionally, it is found that the structural, optoelectronic, and device performance stabilities are similarly enhanced when non-corner-sharing connectivities are suppressed. This approach, combining macroscopic device tests and microscopic material characterization, provides a powerful tool enabling a thorough understanding of the impact of octahedral connectivity on device performance, and opens a new parameter space for designing high-performance photovoltaic metal halide perovskite devices.

Composition Dictates Octahedral Tilt and Photostability in Halide Perovskites

Halide perovskites are excellent candidate materials for use in solar cell, LED, and detector devices, in part because their composition can be tuned to achieve ideal optoelectronic properties. Empirical efficiency optimization has led the field toward compositions rich in FA (formamidinium) on the A-site and I on the X-site, with additional small amounts of MA (methylammonium) or Cs A-site cations and Br X-site anions. However, it is not clear how and why the specific compositions of alloyed, that is, mixed component, halide perovskites relate to photo-stability of the materials. Here, this work combines synchrotron grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, photoluminescence, high-resolution scanning electron diffraction measurements and theoretical modelling to reveal the links between material structure and photostability. Namely, this work finds that increased octahedral titling leads to improved photo-stability that is correlated with lower densities of performance-harming hexagonal polytype impurities. These results uncover the structural signatures underpinning photo-stability and can therefore be used to make targeted changes to halide perovskites, bettering the commercial prospects of technologies based on these materials.

Electron Spectroscopy and Microscopy: A Window into the Surface Electronic Properties of Polycrystalline Metal Halide Perovskites

In the past years, an increasing number of experimental techniques have emerged to address the need to unveil the chemical, structural, and electronic properties of perovskite thin films with high vertical and lateral spatial resolutions. One of these is angle-resolved photoemission electron spectroscopy which can provide direct access to the electronic band structure of perovskites, with the aim of overcoming elusive and controversial information due to the complex data interpretation of purely optical spectroscopic techniques. This perspective looks at the information that can be gleaned from the direct measurement of the electronic band structure of single crystal perovskites and the challenges that remain to be overcame to extend this technique to heterogeneous polycrystalline metal halide perovskites.

Kinetic Process with Anti-Frenkel Disorder in a CsPbI3 Perovskite

Halide perovskites are rich in ionic diffusion phenomena due to their low activation energy. The soft lead iodide lattice can, in theory, endow the system with more complex defect collaborative motions. In this work, we systematically investigated the hopping mechanics of iodide interstitials with respect to various defect behaviors, such as anti-Frenkel disorder creation and annihilation. We found that the existence of iodide vacancies and interstitials can effectively lower the creation barrier of additional anti-Frenkel disorder in the halide perovskite. The free energy barriers for generating additional Frenkel defect pairs vary from 0.25 to 0.43 eV, in the proximity of those of the original iodide defects at 300 K. This finding suggests that the spontaneous creation of a specific level of anti-Frenkel disorder facilitates long-range annihilation and defect hopping processes.

Strain Regulation and Defect Passivation of FA-Based Perovskite Materials for Highly Efficient Solar Cells

Formamidine lead triiodide (FAPbI3 ) perovskites have attracted increasing interest for photovoltaics attributed to the optimal bandgap, high thermal stability, and the record power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the materials still face several key challenges, such as phase transition, lattice defects, and ion migration. Therefore, external ions (e.g., cesium ions (Cs+ )) are usually introduced to promote the crystallization and enhance the phase stability. Nevertheless, the doping of Cs+ into the A-site easily leads to lattice compressive strain and the formation of pinholes. Herein, trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) is introduced into the precursor to provide tensile strain outside the perovskite lattice through intermolecular forces. The special strain compensation strategy further improves the crystallization of perovskite and inhibits the ion migration. Moreover, the TOPO molecule significantly passivates grain boundaries and undercoordinated Pb2+ defects via the forming of P═O─Pb bond. As a result, the target solar cell devices with the synergistic effect of Cs+ and TOPO additives have achieved a significantly improved PCE of 22.71% and a high open-circuit voltage of 1.16 V (voltage deficit of 0.36 V), with superior stability under light exposure, heat, or humidity conditions.

Methodology and implementation of a tunable deep-ultraviolet laser source for photoemission electron microscopy

Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) is a unique and powerful tool for studying the electronic properties of materials and surfaces. However, it requires intense and well-controlled light sources with photon energies ranging from the UV to soft X-rays for achieving high spatial resolution and image contrast. Traditionally, many PEEMs were installed at synchrotron light sources to access intense and tunable soft X-rays. More recently, the maturation of solid-state lasers has opened a new avenue for laboratory-based PEEMs using laser-based UV light at lower photon energies. Here, we report on the characteristics of a laser-based UV light source that was recently integrated with a PEEM instrument. The system consists of a high repetition rate, tunable wavelength laser coupled to a harmonics generation module, which generates deep-UV radiation from 192 nm to 210 nm. We comment on the spectral characteristics and overall laser system stability, as well as on the effects of space charge within the PEEM microscope at high UV laser fluxes. Further, we show an example of imaging on gallium nitride, where the higher UV photon energy and flux of the laser provides considerably improved image quality, compared to a conventional light source. These results demonstrate the capabilities of laser-based UV light sources for advancing laboratory-based PEEMs.

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in a low-energy electron microscope

Spectroscopic photoemission microscopy is a well-established method to investigate the electronic structure of surfaces. In modern photoemission microscopes, the electron optics allow imaging of the image plane, momentum plane, or dispersive plane, depending on the lens setting. Furthermore, apertures allow filtering of energy-, real-, and momentum space. Here, we describe how a standard spectroscopic and low-energy electron microscope can be equipped with an additional slit at the entrance of the already present hemispherical analyzer to enable an angle- and energy-resolved photoemission mode with micrometer spatial selectivity. We apply a photogrammetric calibration to correct for image distortions of the projective system behind the analyzer and present spectra recorded on Au(111) as a benchmark. Our approach makes data acquisition in energy-momentum space more efficient, which is a necessity for laser-based pump-probe photoemission microscopy with femtosecond time resolution.

Highly Stable and Efficient Formamidinium-Based 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Solar Cells via Lattice Manipulation

Formamidinium (FA)-based 2D perovskites have emerged as highly promising candidates in solar cells. However, the insertion of 2D spacer cations into the perovskite lattice concomitantly introduces microstrain and unfavorable orientations that hinder efficiency and stability. In this study, by finely tuning the FA-based 2D perovskite lattice through spacer cation engineering, a stable lattice structure with balanced distortion, microstrain relaxation, and reduced carrier-lattice interactions is achieved. These advancements effectively stabilize the inherently soft lattice against light and thermal-aging stress. To reduce the photocurrent loss induced by undesired crystal texture, a polarity-matched molecular-type selenourea (SENA) additive is further employed to modulate the crystallization kinetics. The introduction of the SENA significantly inhibits the disordered crystallization induced by spacer cations and drives the templated growth of the quantum well structure with a vertical orientation. This controlled crystallization process effectively reduces crystal defects and enhances charge separation. Ultimately, the optimized FA-based perovskite photovoltaic devices achieve a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.03% (certified steady-state efficiency of 19.30%), setting a new record for low-n 2D perovskite solar cells. Furthermore, the devices exhibit less than 1% efficiency degradation after operating at maximum power point for 1000 h and maintain excellent stability after thermal aging and cycles of cold-warm shock, respectively.

Enhanced stability of triple-halide perovskites CsPbI3-x-yBrxCly (x and y = 0-0.024): understanding the role of Cl doping from ab initio calculations

Doping of chloride in mixed iodide-bromide perovskites has been shown experimentally to suppress the photo-induced halide-ion segregation and enhance the stability of triple-halide perovskites (THP). However, a fundamental understanding of the effects of Cl doping is yet to be achieved especially when the doping concentration is low. Here we report the results of a state-of-the-art ab initio study of the atomic structure of THP by considering small doping concentrations of Br and Cl in CsPbI3. We find a reduction in the Pb-I bond lengths and tilting of PbI6 octahedra with Cl doping which lead to exothermic heat of mixing and therefore higher stability of THP. Moreover, using quasi-chemical approximation, our results show that there is a very small contribution of configurational entropy to Gibbs free energy at such low doping concentrations and at the operational temperature of 50 °C. This suggests that the favorable heat of mixing value is more important for the stability at low doping concentrations of Cl while a higher concentration of Cl increases the risk of halide segregation. Further calculations on Frenkel defect formation energy of I or Br-interstitial shows that the doping of Cl in I/Br mixed binary-compounds hinders the formation of Frenkel defects. These results support experiments and help to understand the role of chloride in suppressing the halide ion mobility with only a slight increase in the band gap. Accordingly, the THPs manifest a promising pathway for developing single-phase perovskites for solar cells and light-emitting diodes with improved performance and enhanced stability.

Interface Reconstruction from Ruddlesden-Popper Structures Impacts Stability in Lead Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

The impact of the bulky-cation-modified interfaces on halide perovskite solar cell stability is underexplored. In this work, the thermal instability of the bulky-cation interface layers used in the state-of-the-art solar cells is demonstrated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-based grazing-incidence X-ray scattering measurements reveal significant changes in the chemical composition and structure at the surface of these films that occur under thermal stress. The changes impact charge-carrier dynamics and device operation, as shown in transient photoluminescence, excitation correlation spectroscopy, and solar cells. The type of cation used for surface treatment affects the extent of these changes, where long carbon chains provide more stable interfaces. These results highlight that prolonged annealing of the treated interfaces is critical to enable reliable reporting of performances and to drive the selection of different bulky cations.

Self-Healing Ability of Perovskites Observed via Photoluminescence Response on Nanoscale Local Forces and Mechanical Damage

The photoluminescence (PL) of metal halide perovskites can recover after light or current-induced degradation. This self-healing ability is tested by acting mechanically on MAPbI3 polycrystalline microcrystals by an atomic force microscope tip (applying force, scratching, and cutting) while monitoring the PL. Although strain and crystal damage induce strong PL quenching, the initial balance between radiative and nonradiative processes in the microcrystals is restored within a few minutes. The stepwise quenching-recovery cycles induced by the mechanical action is interpreted as a modulation of the PL blinking behavior. This study proposes that the dynamic equilibrium between active and inactive states of the metastable nonradiative recombination centers causing blinking is perturbed by strain. Reversible stochastic transformation of several nonradiative centers per microcrystal under application/release of the local stress can lead to the observed PL quenching and recovery. Fitting the experimental PL trajectories by a phenomenological model based on viscoelasticity provides a characteristic time of strain relaxation in MAPbI3 on the order of 10-100 s. The key role of metastable defect states in nonradiative losses and in the self-healing properties of perovskites is suggested.

Degradation and Self-Healing in Perovskite Solar Cells

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites are well-known for their unique self-healing ability. In the presence of strong external stimuli, such as light, temperature, and moisture, high-energy defects are created which can be healed by removing the perovskite from the degradation source. This self-healing ability has been showcased in devices with recoverable performance and day-and-night cycling operation to dramatically extend the device lifetime and even mechanical durability. However, to date, the mechanistic details and theory around this captivating trait are sparse and convoluted by the complex nature of perovskites. With a clear understanding of the intrinsic self-healing property, perovskite solar cells with extended lifetimes and durability can be designed to realize the large-scale commercialization of perovskite solar cells. Here, we spotlight the relevant degradation and self-healing literature and then propose design strategies to help conceptualize future research.

Stabilization and Self-Passivation of Grain Boundaries in Halide Perovskite by Rigid Body Translation

The physical properties of grain boundaries in halide perovskites, especially their atomic structure, have not been fully understood yet. We report that Σ5 [130] symmetrical tilt grain boundaries can be stabilized by rigid body translation which is moving one side of the grain parallel with respect to the adjacent grain. Such reconstruction passivates grain boundaries by removing Pb-Pb and I-I interactions that introduce shallow defect states in the band gap. Rigid body translation also stabilizes the [110] antiphase boundary as well in both CsPbI₃ and CsPbBr₃.

Local Nanoscale Phase Impurities are Degradation Sites in Halide Perovskites

Understanding the nanoscopic chemical and structural changes that drive instabilities in emerging energy materials is essential for mitigating device degradation. The power conversion efficiency of halide perovskite photovoltaic devices has reached 25.7% in single junction and 29.8% in tandem perovskite/silicon cells^1,2, yet retaining such performance under continuous operation has remained elusive³. Here, we develop a multimodal microscopy toolkit to reveal that in leading formamidinium-rich perovskite absorbers, nanoscale phase impurities including hexagonal polytype and lead iodide inclusions are not only traps for photo-excited carriers which themselves reduce performance^4,5, but via the same trapping process are sites at which photochemical degradation of the absorber layer is seeded. We visualise illumination-induced structural changes at phase impurities associated with trap clusters, revealing that even trace amounts of these phases, otherwise undetected with bulk measurements, compromise device longevity. The type and distribution of these unwanted phase inclusions depends on film composition and processing, with the presence of polytypes being most detrimental for film photo-stability. Importantly, we reveal that performance losses and intrinsic degradation processes can both be mitigated by modulating these defective phase impurities, and demonstrate that this requires careful tuning of local structural and chemical properties. This multimodal workflow to correlate the nanoscopic landscape of beam sensitive energy materials will be applicable to a wide range of semiconductors for which a local picture of performance and operational stability has yet to be established.

Halide Segregation in Mixed Halide Perovskites: Visualization and Mechanisms

Photoinduced halide segregation in mixed halide perovskites is an intriguing phenomenon and simultaneously a stability issue. In-depth probing this effect and unveiling the underpinning mechanisms are of great interest and significance. This article reviews the progress in visualized investigation of halide segregation, especially light-induced, by means of spatially-resolved imaging techniques. Furthermore, the current understanding of photoinduced phase separation based on several possible mechanisms is summarized and discussed. Finally, the remained open questions and future outlook in this field are outlined.

Stabilized tilted-octahedra halide perovskites inhibit local formation of performance-limiting phases
