Abstract
The benefits of fermented milk containing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) Y44, known for its weight loss properties, remain unclear. For this, we evaluated the effects of the complex fermented milk (Y44-CFM), obtained through the cofermentation of cow's milk and soybean milk with L. plantarum Y44 and traditional starters, on high-fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6 mice. Our study found that the oral administration of Y44-CFM significantly reduced body weight gain and hepatic lipid accumulation in HFD-fed mice while also mitigating liver injury. Additionally, Y44-CFM regulated the expression of enzymes associated with lipid metabolism in the serum, as well as the corresponding or related genes in the liver, such as fatty acid synthase. Furthermore, HFD-induced systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and intestinal barrier dysfunction were improved. The primary alterations in hepatic metabolism involved glycerophospholipids and amino acids, including the biosynthesis of valine, leucine, and isoleucine. The diversity and overall structure of the gut microbiota were also regulated, resulting in a significant decrease in the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes (F/B) and unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae, along with a notable increase in Oscillospiraceae. The correlation analysis indicated that Y44-CFM influenced hepatic lipid metabolism by mediating intestinal flora and its production of short-chain fatty acids, ultimately leading to weight reduction.

Abstract
For a long time, white adipocytes were thought to function as lipid storages due to the sizeable unilocular lipid droplet that occupies most of their space. However, recent discoveries have highlighted the critical role of white adipocytes in maintaining energy homeostasis and contributing to obesity and related metabolic diseases. These physiological and pathological functions depend heavily on the mitochondria that reside in white adipocytes. This article aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the recent research on the function and dysfunction of white adipocyte mitochondria. After briefly summarizing the fundamental aspects of mitochondrial biology, the article describes the protective role of functional mitochondria in white adipocyte and white adipose tissue health and various roles of dysfunctional mitochondria in unhealthy white adipocytes and obesity. Finally, the article emphasizes the importance of enhancing mitochondrial quantity and quality as a therapeutic avenue to correct mitochondrial dysfunction, promote white adipocyte browning, and ultimately improve obesity and its associated metabolic diseases. © 2024 American Physiological Society. Abstract
This study used Litopenaeus vannamei to compare the muscle nutritional quality and volatile flavor compounds of animals raised in the photovoltaic fishery culture model (PM) and the common pond breeding model (CM). Amino acids, fatty acids, and volatile flavor substances were identified and analyzed using an automatic amino acid analyzer and headspace solid phase microextraction(HS-SPME) combined with GC/MS. There were no significant differences between the two culture models in terms of general nutrients, mineral contents, and amino acid compositions in the muscles of L. vannamei. In the PM group, the proportion of flavor amino acids in total amino acids was higher. Based on the amino acid score (AAS) and chemical score (CS), it was found that methionine and cystine were the first limiting amino acids in the muscle samples. The essential amino acid index (EAAI) value was approximately 77 for both models, indicating high-quality proteins. The muscles contained nine types of fatty acids, with the PM group showing significantly higher levels of both monounsaturated and total fatty acids. A total of 23 volatile flavor compounds were identified in both models. The contents of 1-nonanal, n-tridecane, and alpha-terpineol were higher when cultured in the PM. Conversely, the contents of hexanal, 2-ethylhexanol, and dipentene were lower in the PM group. The photovoltaic fishery culture model has the potential to enhance income through photovoltaic power generation. In addition, this study found that the fatty acid composition of L. vannamei was improved in the PM, without compromising muscle composition or flavor. These results provide a theoretical basis for evaluating the meat quality of L. vannamei under different culture models and offer data to support and guide the promotion of the PM.

Abstract
Introduction The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are essential to mammalian growth and development but aberrantly elevated in obesity and diabetes. Each BCAA has an independent and specific physio-biochemical effect on the host. However, the exact molecular mechanism of the detrimental effect of valine on metabolic health remains largely unknown. Methods and results This study showed that for lean mice treated with valine, the hepatic lipid metabolism and adipogenesis were enhanced, and the villus height and crypt depth of the ileum were significantly increased. Transcriptome profiling on white and brown adipose tissues revealed that valine disturbed multiple signaling pathways (e.g., inflammation and fatty acid metabolism). Integrative cecal metagenome and metabolome analyses found that abundances of Bacteroidetes decreased, but Proteobacteria and Helicobacter increased, respectively; and 87 differential metabolites were enriched in several molecular pathways (e.g., inflammation and lipid and bile acid metabolism). Furthermore, abundances of two metabolites (stercobilin and 3-IAA), proteins (AMPK/pAMPK and SCD1), and inflammation and adipogenesis-related genes were validated. Discussion Valine treatment affects the intestinal microbiota and metabolite compositions, induces gut inflammation, and aggravates hepatic lipid deposition and adipogenesis. Our findings provide novel insights into and resources for further exploring the molecular mechanism and biological function of valine on lipid metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increase in circulating insulin levels is associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes (T2D), and the levels of branched-chain amino acids and aromatic amino acids (AAAs) are altered in T2D, but whether AAAs play a role in insulin secretion and signaling remains unclear. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the effects of different AAAs on pancreatic function and on the use of insulin in finishing pigs. METHODS A total of 18 healthy finishing pigs (Large White) with average body weight of 100 ± 1.15 kg were randomly allocated to 3 dietary treatments: Con, a normal diet supplemented with 0.68% alanine; Phe, a normal diet supplemented with 1.26% phenylalanine; and Trp, a normal diet supplemented with 0.78% tryptophan. The 3 diets were isonitrogenous. There were 6 replicates in each group. RESULTS Herein, we investigated the effects of tryptophan and phenylalanine on pancreatic function and the use of insulin in finishing pigs and found that the addition of tryptophan and phenylalanine aggravated pancreatic fat deposition, increased the relative content of saturated fatty acids, especially palmitate (C16:0) and stearate (C18:0), and the resulting lipid toxicity disrupted pancreatic secretory function. We also found that tryptophan and phenylalanine inhibited the growth and secretion of β-cells, downregulated the gene expression of the PI3K/Akt pathway in the pancreas and liver, and reduced glucose utilization in the liver. CONCLUSIONS Using fattening pigs as a model, multiorgan combined analysis of the insulin-secreting organ pancreas and the main insulin-acting organ liver, excessive intake of tryptophan and phenylalanine will aggravate pancreatic damage leading to glucose metabolism disorders, providing new evidence for the occurrence and development of T2D.

Abstract
The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine and valine) are essential for animal growth and metabolic health. However, the effect of valine on male reproduction and its underlying molecular mechanism remain largely unknown. Here, we showed that l-valine supplementation (0.30% or 0.45%, water drinking for 3 weeks) did not change body and testis weights, but significantly altered morphology of sertoli cells and germ cells within seminiferous tubule, and enlarged the space between seminiferous tubules within mouse testis. l-valine treatment (0.45%) increased significantly the Caspase3/9 mRNA levels and CASPASE9 protein levels, therefore induced apoptosis of mouse testis. Moreover, gene expression levels related to autophagy (Atg5 and Lamb3), DNA 5 mC methylation (Dnmt1, Dnmt3a, Tet2 and Tet3), RNA m6A methylation (Mettl14, Alkbh5 and Fto), and m6A methylation binding proteins (Ythdf1/2/3 and Igf2bp1/2) were significantly reduced. Protein abundances of ALKBH5, FTO and YTHDF3 were also significantly reduced, but not for ATG5 and TET2. Testis transcriptome sequencing detected 537 differentially expressed genes (DEGs, 26 up-regulated and 511 down-regulated), involved in multiple important signaling pathways. RT-qPCR validated 8 of 9 DEGs (Cd36, Scd1, Insl3, Anxa5, Lcn2, Hsd17b3, Cyp11a1, Cyp17a1 and Agt) to be decreased significantly, consistent with RNA-seq results. Taken together, l-valine treatment could disturb multiple signaling pathways (autophagy and RNA methylation etc.), and induce apoptosis to destroy the tissue structure of mouse testis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effects of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) on nonalcoholic fatty pancreas disease (NAFPD) and its possible mechanism in high-fat diet (HFD) induced mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pancreatic morphology and lipid infiltration was assessed by hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemistry, and lipid levels in the pancreas were determined using colorimetric enzymatic method. Relevant mechanism was investigated using western blotting and biochemical test. RESULTS In HFD-fed mice, dietary BCAAs restriction could attenuate body weight increase, improve glucose metabolism, and reduce excessive lipid accumulation in the pancreas. Furthermore, expression of AMPKα and downstream uncoupling protein 1 were upregulated, while genes related to mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signal pathway and lipid de novo synthesis were suppressed in HFD-BCAA restriction group compared with HFD and HFD-high BCAAs fed mice. In addition, BCAA restriction upregulated expression of BCAAs related metabolic enzymes including PPM1K and BCKDHA, and decreased the levels of BCAAs and branched chain keto acid in the pancreas. However, there was no difference in levels of lipid content in the pancreas and gene expression of AMPKα and mTORC1 between HFD and HFD-high BCAAs groups. CONCLUSIONS Branched-chain amino acid restriction ameliorated HFD-induced NAFPD in mice by activation of AMPKα pathway and suppression of mTORC1 pathway.

Abstract
Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) play a regulatory role in adipogenesis and energy balance. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of BCAA supplements, especially leucine (Leu) and valine (Val) supplementation, on lipid metabolism and related disorders in a finishing pig model. The results demonstrated that Leu (1%) and Val decreased serum as well as hepatic lipid accumulation. Moreover, metabolomics and lipidomics analyses revealed that Leu and Val markedly downregulated the level of various lipid species in the liver. This outcome may be explained by Leu and Val promoting cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)/protein kinase A (PKA)/hormone-sensitive triglyceride lipase (HSL) signaling pathways. Leu and Val altered the fatty acid composition in distinct adipose tissues and decreased the levels of inflammatory factors. Additionally, they significantly decreased back fat thickness, and the results of the fatty acid profiles demonstrated that Leu and Val significantly increased the levels of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) while decreasing those of saturated fatty acids (SFAs), especially in back fat and abdominal fat. Besides, Leu and Val restored glucose homeostasis by suppressing gluconeogenesis through the serine/threonine protein kinase (AKT)/transcription factor forkhead box O1 (FOXO1) signaling pathway in the liver and back fat. In summary, these results suggest that Leu and Val may serve as key regulators for modulating lipid metabolism and steatosis.

Abstract
Obesity and its associated conditions, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), are risk factors for health. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of glutamine (Gln) on liver steatosis induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) and HEPG2 cells induced by oleic acid. Gln demonstrated a positive influence on hepatic homeostasis by suppressing acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) and promoting sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) expression while improving glucose metabolism by regulating serine/threonine protein kinase (AKT)/factor forkhead box O1 (FOXO1) signals in vivo and in vitro. Obese Gln-fed mice had higher colonic short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) contents and lower inflammation factor protein levels in the liver, HEPG2 cells, and jejunum. Gln-treated obese mice had an effective decrease in Firmicutes abundance. These findings indicate that Gln serves as a nutritional tool in managing obesity and related disorders.

Abstract
Cinnamomum camphora (camphor tree) is an important non-conventional edible plant species found in East Asia. Here, a detailed characterization for the chemical composition and nutritional value of C. camphora seed kernels (CCSKs) collected from different regions in China is provided. The results showed that there were significant differences among the CCSK samples in weights (1000 fruits, 1000 seeds and 1000 kernels), proximate composition, minerals, phenolics, flavonoids and amino acid contents. The highest contents of oil (62.08%) and protein (22.17%) were found in the CCSK samples collected from Chongqing and Shanghai, respectively. The highest content of mineral in the CCSK samples was K (4345.05-7186.89 mg/kg), followed by P (2735.86-5385.36 mg/kg), Ca (1412.27-3327.37 mg/kg) and Mg (2028.65-3147.32 mg/kg). The CCSK sample collected from Guizhou had the highest levels of total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC and TFC), while that from Chongqing had the lowest levels. In addition, the most abundant fatty acid in the CCSK samples was capric acid (57.37-60.18%), followed by lauric acid (35.23-38.29%). Similarities in the fatty acid composition among the CCSK samples were found. The CCSK sample collected from Guizhou had the highest percentage (36.20%) of essential amino acids to total amino acids, and Chongqing had the lowest value (28.84%). These results indicated that CCSK may be developed as an excellent source of plant-based medium-chain oil, protein, dietary fiber, minerals, phytochemicals and essential amino acids.

Abstract
Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) showed multiple functions in glycolipid metabolism and protein synthesis. However, the impacts on the metabolic health of low or high dietary BCAA remain controversial due to the various experimental conditions. Gradient levels of BCAA were supplemented in lean mice for four weeks: 0BCAA (without BCAA), 1/2BCAA (half BCAA), 1BCAA (regular BCAA), and 2BCAA (double BCAA). The results showed that the diet without BCAA caused energy metabolic disorders, immune defects, weight loss, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperleptinemia. 1/2BCAA and 2BCAA diets reduced body fat percentage, but 1/2 BCAA also decreased muscle mass. 1/2BCAA and 2BCAA groups improved lipid and glucose metabolism by affecting metabolic genes. Meanwhile, significant differences between low and high dietary BCAA were observed. The results of this study provide evidence and reference for the controversy about dietary BCAA levels, which indicates that the main difference between low and high BCAA dietary levels may present in the longer term.

Abstract
Sweet potato vine, the byproduct of sweet potato, has a high nutritional value. Silage is an effective solution for nutrient preservation. This article explored the effects of sweet potato vine silage (SPVS) supplementation on meat quality, antioxidant capacity and immune function in finishing pigs. One hundred and eighty finishing pigs (Berkshire × Licha Black) with a body weight of 74.54 ± 3.32 kg were randomly divided into three groups. The three groups were separately fed basal diet (Ctrl), Ctrl supplemented with 2.5% SPVS (LSPVS) or 5% SPVS (HSPVS) on a dry matter basis. Results showed that the eye muscle area in the LSPVS group was significantly increased. The carcass weight in the HSPVS was significantly reduced compared with Ctrl. For the meat quality, only cooking loss in both HSPVS and LSPVS was reduced while other indexes had no significant differences. For the antioxidant capacity, the hepatic level of glutathione (GSH) peroxidase (GSH-PX) was significantly upregulated in LSPVS but downregulated in HSPVS. In the serum, HSPVS decreased GSH level and increased GSH-PX level. HSPVS significantly reduced hepatic interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels and LSPVS significantly reduced IL-12 levels and increased IL-8 and IL-6 levels. Moreover, HSPVS and LSPVS promoted the secretion of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG in the serum. Our data showed that low-dose SPVS supplementation improved carcass traits and high-dose SPVS supplementation increased immune function in finishing pigs, which provides a new alternative to improve animal health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early weaning (EW) can lead to stress and destroy intestinal integrity. Leucine has functional diversity in antioxidant, immune, and metabolic regulation. OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore a lifelong impact of early weaning on intestinal, immune and antioxidant functions of adult rats and the role of leucine supplementation in the alleviation of the damage caused by early weaning. METHODS In this 211-day study, 36 SD rat pups were divided into three groups: 21-day weaning normal group (C), 17-day early weaning group (E) and 17-day early weaning group with two-month leucine supplementation (EL). The content of amino acids in serum, immune and antioxidant indexes, intestinal morphology, liver transcriptomics, mRNA, and protein expression of signaling pathway were determined. RESULTS EW reduced the protein expression level of sIgA and GSH in jejunum, and increased the protein expression levels of IgA, IgM, and IL-17 in serum, and TNFα and IL-1β in jejunum. The impairment by EW was activated via NF-κB signal pathway. In terms of antioxidation, EW reduced the level of GSH in jejunum. After leucine supplementation, the damage induced by EW was partially repaired. CONCLUSIONS EW causes long-term damage to the intestinal barrier function, immunity, apoptosis factor, and antioxidant function of rats and leucine supplementation could alleviate the impairment, suggesting possible approach to EW.

Effects of Dietary Isoleucine Supplementation on the Production Performance, Health Status and Cecal Microbiota of Arbor Acre Broiler Chickens. Microorganisms 2023; 11:microorganisms11020236. Abstract
A total of 24,000 healthy 1-day-old Arbor Acres broilers with similar initial weights were used in this study and fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 400 and 800 mg/kg isoleucine (Ile), denoted CON, ILE400 and ILE800, respectively. Results revealed that the final body weight, average daily weight gain, and eviscerated carcass rate, of broiler chickens in the ILE400 group were significantly higher than in other groups (p < 0.05). In addition, the ILE400 and ILE800 groups had a lower feed conversion rate and a higher survival rate and breast muscle rate (p < 0.05), while the abdominal fat rate was significantly lower than the CON group (p < 0.05). There were significantly lower serum concentrations of UREA, glucose (GLU) and total cholesterol (TCHO) in the ILE400 and ILE800 groups than in the CON group (p < 0.05); glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity was significantly higher in the ILE400 group than in the other groups, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) concentration was considerably lower than in other groups (p < 0.05). Moreover, interleukin (IL)-10 concentration in the ILE800 group was significantly higher than in the other groups (p < 0.05). The ILE400 group significantly down-regulated the mRNA expressions of fatty-acid synthase (FASN) and solid alcohol regulatory element binding protein 1c (SREBP1c), and significantly up-regulated the mRNA expressions of adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and sirtuin1 (Sirt1) (p < 0.05). The ILE400 group had significantly higher intestinal villus height than the CON and ILE800 groups, while the ILE800 group had significantly lower intestinal villus height/crypt depth (p < 0.05). Furthermore, high-throughput sequencing showed that the Shannon index, and Verrucomicrobiota, Colidextribacter and Bacteroides abundances were significantly higher in the ILE400 group than in the CON group (p < 0.05). Interestingly, the ILE800 group reduced the Simpson index, phylum Firmicutes and Bacteroidota abundances (including genera Colidextribacter, Butyricicoccus, [Ruminococcus]_torques_group, Bacteroides, Alistipes, Barnesiella and Butyricimonas), and increased Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria (including genera Dyella, Devosia, unidentified_Chloroplast and Hyphomicrobium) (p < 0.05). Overall, our study showed that adding 400 mg/kg Ile to the diet (diets total Ile levels at 1.01%, 0.90% and 0.87% during the starter, grower and finisher phases, respectively) increased production performance and improved the health status in broiler chickens.

Abstract
Lipid metabolism disorders (LMD) can cause a series of metabolic diseases, including hyperlipidemia, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and atherosclerosis (AS). Its development is caused by more pathogenic factors, among which intestinal flora dysbiosis is considered to be an important pathogenic mechanism of LMD. In recent years, the research on intestinal flora has made great progress, opening up new perspectives on the occurrence and therapeutic effects of diseases. With its complex composition and wide range of targets, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is widely used to prevent and treat LMD. This review takes intestinal flora as a target, elaborates on the scientific connotation of TCM in the treatment of LMD, updates the therapeutic thinking of LMD, and provides a reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are essential in the diet and promote several vital cell responses which may have benefits for health and athletic performance, as well as disease prevention. While BCAA are well-known for their ability to stimulate muscle protein synthesis, their effects on cell energetics are also becoming well-documented, but these receive less attention. In this review, much of the current evidence demonstrating BCAA ability (as individual amino acids or as part of dietary mixtures) to alter regulators of cellular energetics with an emphasis on mitochondrial biogenesis and related signaling is highlighted. Several studies have shown, both in vitro and in vivo, that BCAA (either individual or as a mixture) may promote signaling associated with increased mitochondrial biogenesis including the upregulation of master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α), as well as numerous downstream targets and related function. However, sparse data in humans and the difficulty of controlling variables associated with feeding studies leave the physiological relevance of these findings unclear. Future well-controlled diet studies will be needed to assess if BCAA consumption is associated with increased mitochondrial biogenesis and improved metabolic outcomes in healthy and/or diseased human populations.

Abstract
Okara is a major by-product of soymilk and tofu production. Despite retaining abundant nutrients after the process, okara is often under-utilized. In this study, solid-state fermentation (SSF) of okara was carried out using a koji starter (containing both Aspergillus oryzae and Aspergillus sojae) with the intention of releasing its untapped nutrients. Its effects on lipid metabolism in diet-induced obesity (DIO) were observed. The nutritional profile of fermented okara was elucidated using the following parameters: total phenolic content (TPC), pH, protein content, dietary fiber, amino acid content, and free sugar content. In vivo experiments were conducted using high-fat diets supplemented with unfermented okara and fermented okara over three weeks. Supplementation with fermented okara reduced body weight gain, adipose tissue weight, the serum triglyceride profile, and lipid accumulation in the liver, and altered the mRNA expression levels related to lipid metabolism; however, it did not affect pH and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in this study. In conclusion, high-fat diets supplemented using okara fermented with Aspergillus spp. improved the lipid metabolism in mice, due to their high nutritional value, such as TPC, soy protein, and amino acids, and their synergistic effects without altering the gut microbiota.

Abstract
The current study was aimed to examine the effect of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) on regulating lipid metabolism of American eels. A total of six cement tanks of fish were randomly divided into a control group fed with a commercial diet and a GSPE group fed with a commercial diet supplemented 400 mg/kg GSPE. There were three replicates in each group. Results suggested that GSPE could decrease the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and increase the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level in serum. GSPE might regulate lipid metabolism through upregulating linoleic acid metabolism and arachidonic acid metabolism along with downregulating metabolisms of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis and valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis.

Leucine-Rich Diet Improved Muscle Function in Cachectic Walker 256 Tumour-Bearing Wistar Rats. Cells 2021; 10:cells10123272. Abstract
Skeletal muscle atrophy occurs in several pathological conditions, such as cancer, especially during cancer-induced cachexia. This condition is associated with increased morbidity and poor treatment response, decreased quality of life, and increased mortality in cancer patients. A leucine-rich diet could be used as a coadjutant therapy to prevent muscle atrophy in patients suffering from cancer cachexia. Besides muscle atrophy, muscle function loss is even more important to patient quality of life. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential beneficial effects of leucine supplementation on whole-body functional/movement properties, as well as some markers of muscle breakdown and inflammatory status. Adult Wistar rats were randomly distributed into four experimental groups. Two groups were fed with a control diet (18% protein): Control (C) and Walker 256 tumour-bearing (W), and two other groups were fed with a leucine-rich diet (18% protein + 3% leucine): Leucine Control (L) and Leucine Walker 256 tumour-bearing (LW). A functional analysis (walking, behaviour, and strength tests) was performed before and after tumour inoculation. Cachexia parameters such as body weight loss, muscle and fat mass, pro-inflammatory cytokine profile, and molecular and morphological aspects of skeletal muscle were also determined. As expected, Walker 256 tumour growth led to muscle function decline, cachexia manifestation symptoms, muscle fibre cross-section area reduction, and classical muscle protein degradation pathway activation, with upregulation of FoxO1, MuRF-1, and 20S proteins. On the other hand, despite having no effect on the walking test, inflammation status or muscle oxidative capacity, the leucine-rich diet improved muscle strength and behaviour performance, maintained body weight, fat and muscle mass and decreased some protein degradation markers in Walker 256 tumour-bearing rats. Indeed, a leucine-rich diet alone could not completely revert cachexia but could potentially diminish muscle protein degradation, leading to better muscle functional performance in cancer cachexia.
