Supercapacitor Performance of Sulfonyldibenzene Derivative-Functionalized Graphene Aerogel

3D aerogels incorporating functionalized reduced graphene oxide (SUL/rGO) were prepared as a hydrothermal method utilizing graphene oxide (GO) and a sulfonyldibenzene derivative (SUL) as raw materials. The aromatic compound SUL, which contains hydroxyl and sulfonyl groups, was bonded to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through π-π connections. The obtained composite material exhibited porosity within its structure with improved hydrophilicity, along with excellent electrochemical characteristics. This improvement was ascribed to the specific rGO structure, as well as the pseudocapacitance inherent in SUL, both of which synergistically contribute to improvement in the characteristics of the prepared electrode materials. Also, an analysis was performed employing density functional theory from which the density of states and adsorption energy of SUL on the surface of rGO were computed to further investigate the charge storage process within the prepared composite. The prepared SUL/rGO-2 electrode exhibited the highest specific capacitance value of 388 F/g at a current density equal to 1 A/g. The constructed symmetrical supercapacitor, SUL/rGO-2//SUL/rGO-2, attained an energy density value of 14.55 Wh/kg at a power density equal to 350 W/kg with an exceptional galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) cyclic stability equal to 91% following 10 000 cycles. Therefore, this review presents a novel functionalized graphene-based material incorporating hydroxyl and sulfonyl groups, which holds promise in future energy storage applications.

Molecular surface-dependent light harvesting and photo charge separation in plant-derived carbon quantum dots for visible-light-driven OH radical generation for remediation of aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants and real wastewater

Despite the growing emphasis on eco-friendly nanomaterials as energy harvesters, scientists are actively searching for metal-free photocatalysts to be used in environmental remediation strategies. Developing renewable resource-based carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as the sole photocatalyst to harvest visible light for efficient pollutant degradation is crucial yet challenging, particularly for addressing the escalating issue of water deterioration. Moreover, the photocatalytic decomposition of H2O2 under visible light irradiation remains an arduous task. Based on this, we designed two types of CQDs, C-CQDs (carboxylic-rich) and A-CQDs (amine-rich) with distinct molecular surfaces. Owing to the higher amount of upward band bending induced by amine-rich molecular surface, A-CQDs efficiently harvest the visible light and prevent recombination kinetics resulting in prolonged lifetimes (25 ps), and augmented charge carrier density (35.7 × 1018) of photoexcited charge carriers. A-CQDs enabled rapid visible-light-driven photolysis of H2O2 (k = 0.058 min-1) and produced higher quantity of •OH radicals (0.158 μmol/sec) for the mineralization of petroleum waste, BETX (i.e. Benzene, Ethylbenzene, Toluene and Xylene) (k = 0.017-0.026 min-1) and real textile wastewater (k = 0.026 min-1). To assess comparative toxicities of both remediated and non-remediated real wastewater samples in a time and dose depended manner, Drosophila melanogaster was used as a model organism. The findings unequivocally demonstrate the potential of remediated wastewater for watering urban forestry.

Studies on the Removal of Malachite Green from Its Aqueous Solution Using Water-Insoluble β-Cyclodextrin Polymers

The rising global pollution of natural waters by dyes has brought to light the need for adaptable and efficient removal techniques. To create water-insoluble β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) polymers like CA/-CD, TA/-CD, and MA/-CD, several organic acids including citric acid (CA), tartaric acid (TA), and malic acid (MA) were cross-linked with β-cyclodextrin in this study. The obtained polymers were characterized by different advanced analytical techniques such as FTIR, SEM, and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Malachite green dye was removed from aqueous solutions using the synthesized polymers by adsorption. The adsorption investigation was conducted under several conditions, including pH, adsorbent mass, dye concentration, temperature, contact time, adsorption isotherm, and kinetics. The adsorbent CA/β-CD shows the highest adsorption of MG dye in all of the conditions because it contains a high number of carboxyl groups. The negatively charged carboxyl ions of CA/β-CD attract the positively charged MG dye electrostatically and remove MG from aqueous media with an efficiency of 91%. As a result, the findings indicated that water-insoluble polymers based on β-cyclodextrin are well-suited as inexpensive adsorbents to remove colors from aqueous media.

A facile method of treating spent catalysts via using solvent for recovering undamaged catalyst support

The process of washing and removing crude oil from spent catalysts is a serious issue in both catalyst regeneration and precious metals recovery. In this work, five different solvents with various polar and aromatic properties were chosen to evaluate their impact on the catalyst support structure and crude oil recovery from oil-contaminated spent catalysts. After the deoiling process, the spent catalyst was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, elemental analyzer, contact angle measurement, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, and Brunauer Emmet Teller (BET) method. Our findings demonstrate that p-xylene and kerosene are more effective in removing oil than other solvents. This is due to crude oil's similar polarity and molecular nature with kerosene and p-xylene. Considering the economical reason, kerosene is a better choice for deoiling spent catalyst compared to p-xylene as it is more affordable than p-xylene. XRD data show that the structure of the catalyst support was unaltered by the solvent treatment process, while BET data reveals that the surface area and pore volume are significantly enhanced after the deoiling process. These results imply that deoiling is a very crucial step for the recycling, regeneration, and reuse of spent catalysts. Our work is significant in developing sustainable approaches for managing spent catalysts, and minimizing waste and environmental pollution.

Guar-based aerogels with oriented lamellar structure and lightweight properties for flame-retardant and thermal insulation

In this study, a multi-functional guar gum aerogel with the oriented lamellar structure, which introduced sodium silicate (Na2O·nSiO2) and phytic acid (PA) as thermal insulation additives and flame-retardant agents, respectively, was fabricated via freeze drying. Our aerogel's chemical structure, morphology, and thermal and mechanical properties were analyzed. The oriented lamellar structure was attributed to the orientated growth of ice crystals, which was induced by the "silicate-guar, guar-phytate, and phytate-silicate" multiple hydrogen bonds formed between Na2O·nSiO2, PA, and guar gum. The density of the sample with 2 wt% PA could reach 0.0335 g·cm-3, and the porosity was 5 %, along with a specific pore volume of 0.8144 cm3·g-1. The mechanical properties and thermal insulation performed significant differences in the radial and axial direction of the oriented lamella (nearly 100 % resilience while 50 % deformation quantity and 0.0235 W/(m*K) of thermal conductivity in the radial direction, up to 0.079 MPa of compressive strength in the axial direction). The presence of PA attached a good flame-retardant ability to our aerogel (The Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) was 30.77 %). This work provides a novel and promising method for developing anisotropic aerogel with excellent potential in building energy efficiency and flame-retardant.

Stimuli-directed selective detection of Cu2+ and Cr2O72- ions using a pH-responsive chitosan-poly(aminoamide) fluorescent microgel in aqueous media

In this work, the preparation of a pH-responsive fluorescent microgel, (NANO-PAMAM-CHT), is presented for the selective detection of Cu2+ and Cr2O72- ions. The NANO-PAMAM-CHT (nanosized polyaminoamide-chitosan microgel) is synthesized via aza-Michael addition reactions in a controlled and stepwise manner in water, using easily affordable starting materials like 1,4-diaminobutane, N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide, NIPAM and chitosan. NANO-PAMAM-CHT shows pH-responsive fluorescent properties, whereas the fluorescence intensity shows a pH-responsive change. Due to the selective fluorescence quenching, the microgel can detect both Cu2+ ions and Cr2O72- ions selectively at ambient pH in aqueous medium. Moreover, it can selectively differentiate between Cu2+ ion and Cr2O72- ions at pH ∼3 in water. The limits of detection for Cu2+ ions and Cr2O72- ions are reported as 16.9 μM and 2.62 μM, respectively (lower than the minimum allowed level in drinking water) at pH ∼7. Mechanistic study further reveals the dynamic quenching phenomenon in the presence of Cu2+ ions and static quenching in the presence of Cr2O72- ions.

Green conversion of waste PET into magnetic Ni0·4Fe2·6O4/(Fe,Ni)@carbon nanostructure for adsorption and separation of dyes from aqueous media

A nanostructured core-shell composite (Ni0·4Fe2·6O4/(Fe,Ni)@carbon, NFC) comprising magnetic nano-cores encapsulated with graphitic shells (≈80 wt%) is prepared by facile and clean mechanochemical-molten salt processing approach using waste PET; providing a specific surface area of 201.9 m2 g-1, well-developed mesopores, and ferromagnetic behavior characterized by the coercivity value of 149 Oe. NFC is utilized as a high-performance adsorbent for the removal of organic dyes from their aqueous solutions. Moreover, the magnetic performance of NFC enables the facile collection of the exhausted adsorbent out of the purified water. Performances of NFC for the removal of crystal violet dye (CV), methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (Rh B) from their aqueous solutions are systematically investigated under different environmental conditions including the adsorbent dosage and dye concentration, as well as the solution pH and temperature, where an impressive CV removal capacity of 201.6-243.8 mg g-1 is recorded for a wide pH range of 2-10. Mechanism and kinetics involved in the adsorption process are investigated by studying the adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics. The dye adsorption of the nanocomposite material is confirmed to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model combined with the Langmuir isotherm model, exhibiting an excellent spontaneous and exothermic monolayer adsorption capacity of around 153 mg g-1 (for MO) for the fresh adsorbent and around 89 mg g-1 after three adsorption-regeneration cycles.

Multiscale Porous Carbon Materials by In Situ Growth of Metal-Organic Framework in the Micro-Channel of Delignified Wood for High-Performance Water Purification

Porous carbon materials are suitable as highly efficient adsorbents for the treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater. In this study, we developed multiscale porous and heteroatom (O, N)-doped activated carbon aerogels (CAs) based on mesoporous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocrystals and wood using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation, in situ synthesis, and carbonization/activation. The surface carboxyl groups in a TEMPO-oxidized wood (TW) can provide considerably large nucleation sites for ZIF-8. Consequently, ZIF-8, with excellent porosity, was successfully loaded into the TW via in situ growth to enhance the specific surface area and enable heteroatom doping. Thereafter, the ZIF-8-loaded TW was subjected to a direct carbonization/activation process, and the obtained activated CA, denoted as ZIF-8/TW-CA, exhibited a highly interconnected porous structure containing multiscale (micro, meso, and macro) pores. Additionally, the resultant ZIF-8/TW-CA exhibited a low density, high specific surface area, and excellent organic dye adsorption capacity of 56.0 mg cm-3, 785.8 m2 g-1, and 169.4 mg g-1, respectively. Given its sustainable, scalable, and low-cost wood platform, the proposed high-performance CA is expected to enable the substantial expansion of strategies for environmental protection, energy storage, and catalysis.

3D Porous MoS2-Decorated Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogel as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for Reductive Transformation Reactions

The MoS2-based reduced graphene oxide aerogel (MoS2-rGOA)-assisted organic transformation reactions are presented. MoS2-rGOA is used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the reduction of benzene derivatives such as benzaldehyde, nitrobenzene, and benzonitrile to benzyl alcohol, aniline, and benzamide and their derivatives, respectively, in green solvents (water/methanol) and green reducing agents (hydrazine hydrate having N2 and H2 as byproducts). The mechanistic features of the reduction pathway, substrate scope, and the best suitable conditions by varying the temperature, solvent, reducing agent, catalyst loading, time, etc. are optimized. All of the synthesized products are obtained in quantitative yield with purity and well characterized based on nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. Further, it is also observed that our catalyst is efficiently recyclable and works well checked up to 5 cycles.

Melamine-Formaldehyde Polymer-Based Nanocomposite for Sunlight-Driven Photodegradation of Multiple Dyes and Their Mixture

Cadmium sulfide (CdS)-decorated, cross-linked melamine-formaldehyde polymer-based nanocomposite (MFP-CdS) has been synthesized. MFP-CdS is utilized here as a photoactive material for the photodegradation of six model organic dyes and their mixture in an aqueous medium in the presence of sunlight. The half-life values from the kinetic study of multiple dyes strongly support the importance of sunlight on the fast degradation of all six dyes compared to bulb light and control (dark) conditions. A comparative ¹H NMR analysis of the dyes and their degraded products has been performed to support the breakdown of the aromatic framework of organic dyes using MFP-CdS in sunlight. The mechanisms involved in the photodegradation of dyes have been investigated based on radical trapping studies that support the significant involvement of superoxide radicals along with holes. Moreover, the dye removal efficiency using MFP-CdS from real industrial wastewater samples is evaluated via the external spiking of organic dyes and their mixture in unknown industrial effluents where they showed similar photodegradation results. Based on the high recyclability of MFP-CdS, these are used for multiple cycles.

Air-enclosed pores in graphene aerogel inhibit the adsorption of bisphenol A but accelerate the adsorption of naphthalene

Graphene hydrogel (GH) and aerogel (GA) have great application potential as highly effective adsorbents, but the accessibility of their adsorption sites have not yet been identified, restricting our understanding on the adsorption mechanisms and manufacturing. This study comparatively studied the adsorption characteristics of bisphenol A (BPA) and naphthalene (NAP) on GH and GA, focussing on the accessibility of the adsorption sites. The adsorption of BPA on GA was much lower but faster than that on GH. NAP adsorption on GA was very close to that on GH but faster than that on the latter. Considering that NAP is volatilisable, we speculate that some unwetted sites in the air-enclosed pores are available to it, but not to BPA. We applied ultrasonic and vacuum treatments to remove the air in GA pores, which was verified using a CO₂ replacement experiment. BPA adsorption was greatly enhanced but slowed, while that of NAP was not enhanced. This phenomenon suggested that some inner pores became accessible in the aqueous phase after air removal from pores. The enhanced accessibility of air-enclosed pores was verified by the increased relaxation rate of surface-bounded water on GA, based on a ¹H NMR relaxation analysis. This study highlights that the accessibility of adsorption site plays a crucial role for the adsorption properties of carbon-based aerogel. The volatile chemicals may be quickly adsorbed in the air-enclosed pores, which be useful for immobilizing volatile contaminants.

Biomass-derived carbon nano-onions for the effective elimination of organic pollutants and oils from water

Oil spillage and leakage of organic solvents have caused severe environmental and ecological damages. It is of great significance to develop a cost-efficient and green adsorbent material with high uptake efficiency to separate the oil-water mixture. In this work, biomass-derived CNOs were first time explored in the adsorption of organic pollutants and oils from water. Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) with hydrophobicity and oleophilicity were cost-effectively synthesized in an energy efficient flame pyrolysis process using flaxseed oil as a carbon source. The as-synthesized CNOs without any further surface modification have shown high adsorption efficiency in removing organic solvents and oils from the oil-water mixture. The CNOs could adsorb diverse organic solvents such as pyridine (36.81 mg g^-1), dichloromethane (90.95 mg mg^-1), aniline (76 mg mg^-1), toluene (64 mg mg^-1), chloroform (36.25 mg mg^-1), methanol (49.25 mg mg^-1), and ethanol (42.25 mg mg^-1). The uptake capacity for petrol and diesel over CNOs was observed at 36.68 mg mg^-1 and 58.1 mg mg^-1, respectively. The adsorption of pyridine followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir's isotherm model. Moreover, the adsorption efficiency of CNOs towards the remediation of pyridine was almost similar in real-water samples when tested in tap water, dam water, groundwater, and lake water. Similarly, the practical applicability for the separation of petrol and diesel was also verified in the real sample (sea water) and has been proven to be excellent. By simple evaporation, the recovered CNOs can be reused for more than 5 cycles. CNOs exhibit the promising potential to be used in practical applications for oil-polluted water treatment.

Biopolymeric Fibrous Aerogels: The Sustainable Alternative for Water Remediation

The increment in water pollution due to the massive development in the industrial sector is a worldwide concern due to its impact on the environment and human health. Therefore, the development of new and sustainable alternatives for water remediation is needed. In this context, aerogels present high porosity, low density, and a remarkable adsorption capacity, making them candidates for remediation applications demonstrating high efficiency in removing pollutants from the air, soil, and water. Specifically, polymer-based aerogels could be modified in their high surface area to integrate functional groups, decrease their hydrophilicity, or increase their lipophilicity, among other variations, expanding and enhancing their efficiency as adsorbents for the removal of various pollutants in water. The aerogels based on natural polymers such as cellulose, chitosan, or alginate processed by different techniques presented high adsorption capacities, efficacy in oil/water separation and dye removal, and excellent recyclability after several cycles. Although there are different reviews based on aerogels, this work gives an overview of just the natural biopolymers employed to elaborate aerogels as an eco-friendly and renewable alternative. In addition, here we show the synthesis methods and applications in water cleaning from pollutants such as dyes, oil, and pharmaceuticals, providing novel information for the future development of biopolymeric-based aerogel.

N-Doped Carbon Nanorods from Biomass as a Potential Antidiabetic Nanomedicine

Insufficient glucose control remains a critical challenge for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with currently used therapeutic drugs, which can also have detrimental side effects. The facile synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon nanorods (N-CNRs) as therapeutic agents in a T2DM transgenic db/db mouse model is reported herein. N-CNRs are synthesized from silkworm powder without the assistance of any template and possess a hollow graphitic nature, rough surface, and good aqueous solubility, which make them ideal candidates for fabricating nanomedicines. N-CNRs are employed to reduce fasting blood glucose and ameliorate serum biomarker levels linked to oxidative stress and inflammation. Interestingly, through the downregulation of enhanced expression of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase as well as inflammatory responses, N-CNRs reverse pancreatic dysfunction and normalize the secretory functions of pancreatic cells. Moreover, hepatic steatosis is attenuated by downregulating lipogenesis and increasing fatty acid oxidation. This finding may help in designing novel therapeutics for T2DM treatment.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of Acid Blue dye using CdS/TiO2 nanocomposite

Photocatalytic degradation is essential for the successful removal of organic contaminants from wastewater, which is important for ecological and environmental safety. The advanced oxidation process of photocatalysis has become a hot topic in recent years for the remediation of water. Cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanostructures doped with Titanium oxide (CdS/TiO₂) nanocomposites has manufactured under ambient conditions using a simple and modified Chemical Precipitation technique. The nanocomposites crystal structure, thermal stability, recombination of photo-generated charge carriers, bandgap, surface morphology, particle size, molar ratio, and charge transfer properties are determined. The production of nanocomposites (CdS-TiO₂) and their efficient photocatalytic capabilities are observed. The goal of the experiment is to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO₂ in the visible region by doping CdS nanocomposites. The results showed that as-prepared CdS-TiO₂ nanocomposites has exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity in the process of photocatalytic degradation of AB-29 dye, and its degradation efficiency is 84%. After 1 h 30 min of visible light irradiation, while CdS and TiO₂ showed only 68% and 09%, respectively. The observed decolorization rate of AB-29 is also higher in the case of CdS-TiO₂ photocatalyst ~ 5.8 × 10⁻⁴mol L⁻¹ min⁻¹) as compared to the reported decolorization rate of CdS ~ 4.5 × 10⁻⁴mol L⁻¹ min⁻¹ and TiO₂ ~ 0.67 × 10⁻⁴mol L⁻¹ min⁻¹. This increased photocatalytic effectiveness of CdS-TiO₂ has been accomplished by reduced charge carrier recombination as a result of improved charge separation and extension of TiO₂ in response to visible light.

Efficient Dye Contaminant Elimination and Simultaneously Electricity Production via a Bi-Doped TiO2 Photocatalytic Fuel Cell

TiO₂ develops a higher efficiency when doping Bi into it by increasing the visible light absorption and inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated charges. Herein, a highly efficient Bi doped TiO₂ photoanode was fabricated via a one-step modified sol-gel method and a screen-printing technique for the anode of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC). A maximum degradation rate of 91.2% of Rhodamine B (RhB) and of 89% after being repeated 5 times with only 2% lost reflected an enhanced PFC performance and demonstrated an excellent stability under visible-light irradiation. The excellent degradation performance was attributed to the enhanced visible-light response and decreased electron-hole recombination rate. Meanwhile, an excellent linear correlation was observed between the efficient photocurrent of PFC and the chemical oxygen demand of solution when RhB is sufficient.

Sunlight-promoted photodegradation of Congo red by cadmium-sulfide decorated graphene aerogel

Herein, a simpler-viable methodology for the surface decoration of pear fruit derived graphene aerogel (GA) via cadmium sulfide (CdS) has been presented. GA can be easily synthesized from bio-mass, which provide an economic advantage. Surface decoration via CdS imparts photocatalytic activities in functionalized graphene aerogels (f-GA). CdS-f-GA is being explored here as a photocatalyst for the degradation of a toxic azo dye named Congo red in the presence of sunlight. The rate and mechanism associated with photodegradation were analyzed by performing kinetics and radical trap-based quenching experiments. Nuclear magnetic resonance and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses of the control and photodegraded products were performed to ensure the degradation of the organic framework of Congo red. Additionally, the real-life applicability of CdS-f-GA was also analyzed by degrading the dye in different types of industrial samples (via the method of external spiking), which can advance its practical relevance.

Thiourea-functionalized graphene aerogel for the aqueous phase sensing of toxic Pb(II) metal ions and H2O2

A simpler approach of functionalization for the fabrication of thiourea-functionalized-Graphene Aerogel (t-GA) is described here. Graphene Aerogel (GA) was synthesized from bio-mass, which on a simpler oxidative treatment get converted to its water-soluble version due to the impregnation of several oxygenous functionalities like carboxylic, hydroxyl, etc. Further, these carboxylated groups have been functionalized with the molecules of thiourea using the long known dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) as a coupling agent. The as-synthesized t-GA shows bright yellow fluorescence with a quantum yield of ~3% and holds the high-aqueous solubility and photostability. The fluorescence property of t-GA has been used here for the specific and selective sensing of toxic lead (Pb(II)) metal ions from the used many other metal ions via the fluorescence quenching and showed a limit of detection ~7.3 nM. Further, the mechanism for selective sensing was studied in detail and found to be preferable via ligand to metal charge transfer quenching mechanism. The cyclic voltammetry studies supported the selective sensing of Pb(II). Moreover, t-GA has also been studied for the sensing of hydrogen peroxide and as a yellow fluorescent ink.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by MgCoAl layered double hydroxide: Potential enhancement effects of catalyst morphology and coexisting anions

The morphology and specific surface area of layered double hydroxide (LDH) are of great significance for optimizing the application of LDH in sewage treatment. Herein, we present a study of the relation between the catalytic property and the morphology of LDH via activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degradation of organic pollutants. The results demonstrated that LDH nanoscrolls possessed a superior performance for methylene blue (MB) degradation, which achieved almost 100% removal in 40 min and the calculated apparent rate constant was about 2.1, 4.5 and 11.5 times higher than that of LDH nanosheets, Co²⁺ and Co₃O₄, respectively. According to the results of X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), ¹O₂ was confirmed to play a dominant role in the MB degradation, where the redox cycle of Co³⁺/Co²⁺ provided the impetus for the reaction. Moreover, the pH and ion tolerance abilities of LDH nanoscrolls in PMS activating process were determined as well. Remarkably, CO₃^2- and H₂PO₄^- could even promote the generation of •OH and ¹O₂ to facilitate the progress of reaction. Overall, these findings in the study may provide more opportunities in the preparation of high-efficiency catalysts and give insight into the accelerated degradation of refractory contaminants with surrounding anions.

Assembling Ultrafine SnO2 Nanoparticles on MIL-101(Cr) Octahedrons for Efficient Fuel Photocatalytic Denitrification

Effectively reducing the concentration of nitrogen-containing compounds (NCCs) remains a significant but challenging task in environmental restoration. In this work, a novel step-scheme (S-scheme) SnO2@MCr heterojunction was successfully fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method. At this heterojunction, MIL-101(Cr) octahedrons are decorated with highly dispersed SnO2 quantum dots (QDs, approximate size 3 nm). The QDs are evenly wrapped around the MIL-101(Cr), forming an intriguing zero-dimensional/three-dimensional (0D/3D) S-scheme heterostructure. Under simulated sunlight irradiation (280 nm < λ < 980 nm), SnO2@MCr demonstrated superior photoactivity toward the denitrification of pyridine, a typical NCC. The adsorption capacity and adsorption site of SnO2@MCr were also investigated. Tests using 20%SnO2@MCr exhibited much higher activity than that of pure SnO2 and MIL-101(Cr); the reduction ratio of Cr(VI) is rapidly increased to 95% after sunlight irradiation for 4 h. The improvement in the photocatalytic activity is attributed to (i) the high dispersion of SnO2 QDs, (ii) the binding of the rich adsorption sites with pyridine molecules, and (iii) the formation of the S-scheme heterojunction between SnO2 and MIL-101(Cr). Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism of pyridine was elucidated, and the possible intermediate products and degradation pathways were discussed.

Electrospinning preparation of g-C3N4/Nb2O5 nanofibers heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water

In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) and niobium pentoxide nanofibers (Nb₂O₅ NFs) heterojunction was prepared by means of a direct electrospinning approach combined with calcination process. The characterizations confirmed a well-defined morphology of the g-C₃N₄/Nb₂O₅ heterojunction in which Nb₂O₅ NFs were tightly attached onto g-C₃N₄ nanosheets. Compared to pure g-C₃N₄ and Nb₂O₅ NFs, the as-prepared g-C₃N₄/Nb₂O₅ heterojunction exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of rhodamine B and phenol under visible light irradiation. The enhanced catalytic activity was attributed predominantly to the synergistic effect between g-C₃N₄ sheets and Nb₂O₅ NFs, which promoted the transferring of carriers and prohibited their recombination, confirmed by the measurement of transient photocurrent responses and photoluminescence spectra. In addition, the active species trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radical anion (·O₂^–) and hole (h⁺) were the major active species contributing to the photocatalytic process. With its high efficacy and ease of preparation, g-C₃N₄/Nb₂O₅ heterojunction has great potentials for applications in treatment of organic pollutants and conversion of solar energy.

Autonomous magnetic microbots for environmental remediation developed by organic waste derived carbon dots

Biodegradable precursors for micro/nanobots development are key requirements for several sustainable applications. In this regard, we propose an innovative solution for water purification at minimum cost and efforts where organic waste is used for the treatment of organic pollutants. Herein, catalytic magnetic microbots were developed by functionalizing iron oxide nanoparticles with carbon dots (C-Dots), which were synthesized by using household waste such as potato peels as precursors. The speed of these autonomously propelling bots indeed is found very promising for large distance swimming even in viscous medium by using hydrogen peroxide as fuel. These microbots catalytically propel and degrade toxic polar as well as sparingly water-soluble industrial dyes without any external agitation. The degradation of dyes was confirmed by mass-spectra analysis. Furthermore, these microbots can efficiently degrade a mixture of dyes and reused without compromising its performance significantly. Additionally, rate constant (K) and activation energy (E_a) were also determined to establish the catalytic nature of the bots. The present microbots acted as nanozyme owing to its synergistic catalytic activity of Fe₃O₄ and C-Dots for degradation of mixture of toxic dyes, essential for large scale water treatment.

Efficient degradation and detoxification of methylene blue dye by a newly isolated ligninolytic enzyme producing bacterium Bacillus albus MW407057

In present work, a LiP enzyme producing bacterium was isolated form textile wastewater and sludge sample and identified as Bacillus albus by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. This bacterium decolorized 99.27 % MB dye and removed 83.87 % COD within 6 h at 30 °C, pH 7, 100 rpm and 100 mg/l of dye concentration in presence of glucose and yeast extract as carbon and nitrogen source, respectively. The bacterium also produced LiP enzyme of molecular weight ∼48 kDa, characterized by SDS-PAGE analysis. Different metabolites like monomethylthionine, thionin, (E)-2-(3-Oxopropylidene)-2H-benzo[b][1,4] thiozine-3-carboxylic acid, N-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-N-methylformamide, ethylamine, water and carbon dioxide produced during treatment process were characterized by FT-IR and LC-MS analysis. Further, the toxicity assessment results showed that the toxicity of bacteria treated dye solution was reduced significantly allowing 90 % seed germination indicating that the isolated bacterium B. albus has high potential to decolorize and detoxify MB dye for environmental safety.
