Abstract
The high transition dipole strength of the azide asymmetric stretch makes aryl azides good candidates as vibrational probes (VPs). However, aryl azides have complex absorption profiles due to Fermi resonances (FRs). Understanding the origin and the vibrational modes involved in FRs of aryl azides is critically important toward developing them as VPs for studies of protein structures and structural changes in response to their surroundings. As such, we studied vibrational couplings in 4-azidotoluene and 4-azido-N-phenylmaleimide in two solvents, N,N-dimethylacetamide and tetrahydrofuran, to explore the origin and the effects of intramolecular group and solvent on the FRs of aryl azides using density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the B3LYP functional and seven basis sets, 6-31G(d,p), 6-31+G(d,p), 6-31++G(d,p), 6-311G(d,p), 6-311+G(d,p), 6-311++G(d,p), and 6-311++G(df,pd). Two combination bands consisting of the azide symmetric stretch and another mode form strong FRs with the azide asymmetric stretch for both molecules. The FR profile was altered by replacing the methyl group with maleimide. Solvents change the relative peak position and intensity more significantly for 4-azido-N-phenylmaleimide, which makes it a more sensitive VP. Furthermore, the DFT results indicate that a comparison among the results from different basis sets can be used as a means to predict more reliable vibrational spectra.

Abstract
Modifying simple molecular structures to significantly improve nonlinear optical (NLO) performance is a primary prerequisite for scientific research. Based on the four phenylamine derivatives reported in previous studies, we designed four organic nonlinear molecules by changing the acceptor group and π-linker. (Time-dependent) density functional theory (DFT/TD-DFT) was performed on molecular geometry optimization, the contribution of π electrons to the bond order, linear and two-photon absorption (TPA) spectra, the intra-molecular charge transfer matrix (CTM), and NLO coefficients. These aspects were considered to analyze in detail how the structural modification of acceptors and π-linkers affects NLO characteristics. The three modification methods were: adding a carbonyl group at the junction of the π-linker and the acceptor group, adding a carbonyl group and a nitrogen atom to the acceptor group, and replacing the quinolinone with a pyrenyl group as the π-linker. The latter two methods can significantly reduce the excitation energy and enhance the intensity of intra-molecular charge transfer during the two-photon transition. The maximum TPA cross-sections and wavelengths of the designed molecules are DPPM (84722.6 GM, 815.7 nm) and DDPM (21600.6 GM, 781.3 nm). These two molecules have large TPA cross-sections in the near-infrared region, which renders them as possible NLO materials with broad application prospects.

Tropaeolin OO as a Chemical Sensor for a Trace Amount of Pd(II) Ions Determination. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27144511. Abstract
The selective determination of metals in waste solutions is a very important aspect of the industry and environmental protection. Knowledge of the contents and composition of the waste can contribute to design an efficient process separation and recovery of valuable metals. The problematic issue is primarily the correct determination of metals with similar properties such as palladium and platinum. Thus this paper focuses on the development of a selective method that enables Pd(II) determination in the presence of Pt(IV) ions using the azo-dye tropaeolin OO (TR). For this purpose, the process of the metalorganic complex formation and Pd(II) ions determination were studied by using UV–Vis spectrophotometry under different conditions: solvents (water and B-R buffer), pH (2.09–6.09), temperature (20–60 °C), anions and cations concentrations. The formed metalorganic complex between Pd and tropaeolin OO allows for distinguishing Pd(II) ions from both platinum complexes, i.e. Pt(II), Pt(IV). Moreover, the proposed method can be applied to solutions containing both chloride and chlorate ions. The obtained characteristic spectrum with two maxima allows the determination of palladium even in the presence of other cations (Na, K, Mg, Zn, Co, Ni, Al) and changed concentrations of Pt(IV) ions. Furthermore, the developed spectrophotometric method for the Pd(II) ions determination using tropaeolin OO is characterized by high selectivity towards palladium ions.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations within the framework of generalized gradient approximation (GGA), meta-GGA, and local functionals were carried out to investigate the reactivity and catalytic activity of Ag n (n = 15-20) clusters. Our results reveal that all the Ag n clusters in this size range, except Ag20, adsorb O2 preferably in the bridged mode with enhanced binding energy as compared to the atop mode. The O2 binding energies range from 0.77 to 0.29 in the bridged mode and from 0.36 to 0.15 eV in the atop mode of O2 adsorption. The strong binding in the case of the bridged mode of O2 adsorption is also reflected in the increase in O-O bond distance. Natural bond orbital charge analysis and vibrational frequency calculations reveal that enhanced charge transfer occurs to the O2 molecule and there is significant red shift in the stretching frequency of O-O bond in the case of the bridged mode of O2 adsorption on the clusters, thereby confirming the above results. Moreover, the simulated CO oxidation reaction pathways show that the oxidation of the CO molecule is highly facile on Ag16 and Ag18 clusters involving small kinetic barriers and higher heats toward CO2 formation.
