Coherent control of interlayer vibrations in Bi2Se3 van der Waals thin-films

Mapping LiNbO_{3} Phonon-Polariton Nonlinearities with 2D THz-THz-Raman Spectroscopy

Two-dimensional terahertz-terahertz-Raman spectroscopy can provide insight into the anharmonicities of low-energy phonon modes-knowledge of which can help develop strategies for coherent control of material properties. Measurements on LiNbO_{3} reveal THz and Raman nonlinear transitions between the E(TO_{1}) and E(TO_{3}) phonon polaritons. Distinct coherence pathways are observed with different THz polarizations. The observed pathways suggest that the origin of the third-order nonlinear responses is due to mechanical anharmonicities, as opposed to electronic anharmonicities. Further, we confirm that the E(TO_{1}) and E(TO_{3}) phonon polaritons are excited through resonant one-photon THz excitation.

Ultrafast formation of quantized interlayer vibrations in Bi2Se3 by photoinduced strain waves

This study comprehensively investigated the coherent lattice dynamics in Bi₂Se₃ by ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy with tunable near-infrared probe pulses. Sample-thickness- and probe-wavelength-dependent experiments revealed the key role of Bi₂Se₃ optical property in the generation and detection of photoinduced strain waves, whose confinement initiated coherent interlayer vibrations. Furthermore, the frequency and lifetime of the interlayer vibrations could be quantitatively explained with a modified linear chain and an acoustic mismatch model considering elastic coupling at sample-substrate interfaces. The results of this work provide insights for analyzing and interpreting, through ultrafast optical spectroscopy, nanomechanical interactions in layered materials.

3D Hypersound Microscopy of van der Waals Heterostructures

The mechanical properties of the layered crystals in the few layer limit are largely unexplored. We employ a picosecond ultrasonic technique to access the corresponding mechanical parameters. Temporal variation of the reflection coefficient of the Al film that covers hBN/WSe₂/hBN (where hBN is hexagonal boron nitride) heterostructures on a sapphire substrate after the femtosecond laser pulse excitation is carefully measured using an interferometric technique with spatial resolution. The laser pulse generates a broadband sound wave packet propagating perpendicularly to the Al plane and partially reflecting from the heterostructural interfaces. The demonstrated technique allows one to resolve a WSe₂ monolayer embedded in hBN. We apply a multilayered model of the optoacoustical response to evaluate the mechanical parameters, in particular, the rigidity of the interfaces. Mapping of the Fourier spectra of the response visualizes different composition regions and may serve as an acoustic tomography tool. Almost zero phonon dissipation below 150 GHz demonstrates the van der Waals heterostructures' potential for nanoacoustical applications.
