Abstract
Since the beginning of this century, p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TSA) catalysed organic transformations have been an active area of research for developing efficient synthetic methodologies. Often, catalysis using p-TSA is associated with many advantages, such as operational simplicity, high selectivity, excellent yields, and ease of product isolation, which make organic synthesis convenient and versatile. Notably, p-TSA is a non-toxic, commercially available, inexpensive solid organic compound that is soluble in water, alcohols, and other polar organic solvents. p-TSA is a strong acid compared to many protic or mineral acids and its high acidity helps activate different organic functional groups. p-TSA-promoted conversions are fast, have a high atom and pot economy, and feature a multiple bond-forming index. Therefore, the utilization of p-TSA enables the synthesis of many important structural scaffolds without any hazardous metals, making it desirable in numerous applications of sustainable and green chemistry. Recently, this emerging area of research has become one of the pillars of synthetic organic chemistry to synthesise biologically relevant, complex carbocycles and heterocycles. This study provides a comprehensive summary of methods, applications, and mechanistic insights into p-TSA-catalysed organic transformations, covering the literature reports that have appeared since 2012.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of 2H-chromenes via catalyst-controlled highly regioselective [3 + 3] annulation of vinyl sulfoxonium ylides with quinones. Under boron-catalyzed conditions, the reaction between the ylide and quinone resulted in the formation of 2H-chromene-4-carboxylates. In contrast, a different mechanistic pathway was observed when utilizing a Ru(II) catalytic system, which led to the formation of 2H-chromene-2-carboxylates through a furan intermediate.

Abstract
Reactions with diverse C1 synthons to realize homologation were well explored. However, homologations occurring twice with one C1 synthon in a reaction were less reported. We disclose herein a Cu(II)-catalyzed novel and efficient synthesis of 2H-chromenes from 2-naphthols, 1,3-diketones, and N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) as a dual carbon synthon. Various 2H-chromenes with different functional groups are constructed in moderate to good yields. This is the first report that DMEA acts as a dual C1 synthon.

Abstract
The nanosized hybrid material ZnO-ZnS was synthesized using the well-known sol-gel method, as a simple and environmentally friendly procedure. The material was then characterized using various techniques including FESEM, TEM, UV-vis, DRS, EDS, XRD, and FT-IR. The characterization studies revealed the generation of ZnO-ZnS nanoparticles with a mean size of around 25 nm. Moreover, DRS analysis provided a band gap of 3.05 eV for this nanomaterial. The photocatalytic properties of the ZnO-ZnS heterojunction was investigated in the synthesis of some substituted chromenes under mild reaction conditions. The results showed that the prepared nanophotocatalyst exhibits significantly higher activity compared to its individual components (ZnO and ZnS) and provides 73-87% yield with 0.01 g of ZnO-ZnS after 30 min. In addition, the nanophotocatalyst demonstrated a high reusability in the desired condensation reaction. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZnO-ZnS can be attributed to the slower recombination of the electron-hole pairs in this semiconductor material. The reactive species OH•, •O2-, and h+ are believed to play important roles in the photocatalytic system. Furthermore, cellular toxicity of ZnO-ZnS nanoparticles was evaluated on HCT-116 human gastrointestinal cancer cell line by MTT assay. The results proved a distinct reduction of cell viability, proofing cytotoxicity of nanoparticles on the cancer cells. This study highlights the potential of the nanoparticles against gastrointestinal cancer.

Abstract
The unique reactivity of in situ generated propargylic para-quinone methides as a new type of five-carbon synthon has been discovered by a novel bismuth(III)-catalyzed tandem annulation reaction. This 1,8-addition/cyclization/rearrangement cyclization cascade reaction is characterized by unusual structural reconstruction of 2-vinylphenol, involving cleavage of the C1'═C2' bond and formation of four new bonds. This method provides a convenient and mild approach to generate synthetically important functionalized indeno[2,1-c]chromenes. The mechanism of the reaction is proposed from several control experiments.

Abstract
Background Chromene derivatives showed numerous biological activities. In the current study, the antioxidant, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis properties of halogenated dihydropyrano[3,2-b]chromene-3-carbonitrile derivatives (HDCCD) on MCF-7 cell line have been examined. Objectives This study's principal point was synthesizing new halogenated pyranochromene derivatives and assessing their cytotoxic effects and apoptosis potential on MCF-7 breast cancer cell line by flow cytometry. Methods Initially, 6-chloro- and 6-bromo-3-hydroxychromone compounds were prepared. In the next step, a series of HDCCD were synthesized by a one-pot three-component reaction of these two compounds, aromatic aldehydes, and malononitrile, in the presence of triethylamine in EtOH at reflux conditions. These compounds were fully characterized by standard spectroscopic techniques (IR, 1H, and 13C NMR) and elemental analyses. The potential of the antioxidant activity was determined by using ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP). 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were used to evaluate metabolic activity. The nitric oxide (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) biomarkers of the exposed cells were evaluated on the cells and their supernatant. To quantify apoptotic death of MCF-7 breast cancer cells treated by the compounds at their IC50 concentrations, Annexin V-FITC apoptosis detection kit was utilized. Molecular docking of compounds (6a-j) into the Cyclin-dependent kinase 6 (PDB code: 4EZ5) was carried out, and the probable binding mode of compounds 6e and 6j was determined. Results A dose-response relationship was seen in all the compounds. Most of them induced cytotoxic effects on the cells. Nitrite concentration of the culture media of the cells was decreased compared to the control. Malondialdehyde levels of the cells were below the range of the control by the addition of 6b, 6d, 6e, 6f, and 6g compounds on the cells, while the addition of the 6a, 6c, 6h, 6i, and 6j compounds increased the MDA level compared to the control. Flow cytometric analysis showed that most of the exposed cells were in the early and late apoptotic stage, and a few of them were in the necrotic stage. Conclusions It could be concluded that HDCCD (6a-j) was toxic and caused death in the cells by apoptosis. The compounds have lipophilic characteristics, so they can easily pass the cell membrane. As confirmed by LDH results, it can be concluded that the cytotoxicity is connected with apoptosis rather than necrosis, endorsed by flowcytometry analysis afterward.

Abstract
ortho-Alkynyl quinone methides are well-known four-atom synthons for direct [4 + n] cycloaddition in constructing useful oxa-heterocyclic compounds owing to their high reactivity as well as the thermodynamically favored aromatization nature of this process. Herein we report an operationally simple and eco-friendly protocol for the modular and regioselective access of (E)-4-(vinyl or aryl or alkynyl)iminochromenes from propargylamines and S-methylated β-ketothioamides in the presence of FeCl3, and particularly under undried acetonitrile and air atmosphere conditions. This method exhibits a broad substrate scope and displays nice functional group compatibility, thus providing an efficient access of 3,4-disubstituted iminochromenes.

Abstract
We describe here for the first time the synthesis of 2-(chalcogenyl)-3H-benzo[f]chromenes and the new 3-(phenylselanyl)-2H-chromenes by the radical or electrophilic cyclization of propargylic aryl ethers in the presence of diorganyl diselenides or ditellurides using Oxone as a green oxidant and acetonitrile as solvent in a sealed tube at 100 °C. In this study, thirty-one chalcogenylchromenes with a broad substrate scope were prepared in moderate to excellent yields (50-98%), including compounds derived from natural products.

Abstract
Substituted on the benzene ring 4-CF3-2H-chromenes have been prepared from substituted 2-(trifluoroacetyl)phenols and vinyltriphenylphosphonium chloride according to the Schweizer protocol in moderate to excellent yields. The influence of the type and the position of aromatic ring substituents on yields of 4-CF3-2H-chromenes have been investigated. It has been shown that 4-CF3-2H-chromenes are convenient precursors to 4-CF3-coumarins.

Abstract
A concise and practical one-pot sustainable approach for expedient synthesis of 2-arylimino-2H-chromenes by two-component cascade [4 + 2] annulative coupling of easily available 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes with β-ketothioamides has been developed in good yields for the first time. Remarkably, metal- and additive-free conditions, use of simple K2CO3 as a mild base, open atmosphere, exclusive regioselectivity, step/atom economy, nonhazardous reagents, and easy purification are added characteristics to the strategy. This annulative protocol will not only provide an efficient method to access diverse chromene scaffolds, but also enrich the research domain of β-ketothioamides.

Abstract
The first copper-catalyzed direct dehydrative alkynylation of 2H-chromene hemiketals with terminal alkynes has been uncovered. The use of cheap and readily available CuCl2 as the catalyst allowed the preparation of various 2,2-disubstituted 2-alkynylated 2H-chromenes in moderate to good yields, which compensates for the limitation of the current methods only suited for the synthesis of 2-monosubsituted 2-alkynylated 2H-chromenes.
