Effects of an additive (hydroxyapatite-bentonite-biochar) on Cd and Pb stabilization and microbial community composition in contaminated vegetable soil

Mobility of Zn and Cu in Bentonites: Implications for Environmental Remediation

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mobility of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) and their impact on the properties of bentonites and unfrozen water content. Limited research in this area necessitates further analysis to prevent the negative effects of metal interactions on bentonite effectiveness. Tests involved American (SWy-3, Stx-1b) and Slovak (BSvk) bentonite samples with Zn or Cu ion exchange. Sequential extraction was performed using the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) method. Elemental content was analyzed via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Unfrozen water content was measured using nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results showed a significant influence of the main cation (Zn or Cu) on ion mobility, with toxic metal concentrations increasing mobility and decreasing residual fractions. Mobile Zn fractions increased with larger particle diameters, lower clay content, and shorter interplanar spacing, while the opposite was observed for Cu. Zn likely accumulated in larger clay pores, while Cu was immobilized in the bentonite complex. The stability of Zn or Cu ions increased with higher clay content or specific surface area. Residual Zn or Cu fractions were highest in uncontaminated bentonites with higher unfrozen water content, suggesting the potential formation of concentrated solutions in sub-zero temperatures, posing a threat to the clay-water environment, especially in cold regions.

Almond shell-derived biochar decreased toxic metals bioavailability and uptake by tomato and enhanced the antioxidant system and microbial community

The effectiveness of almond shell-derived biochar (ASB) in immobilizing soil heavy metals (HMs) and its impact on soil microbial activity and diversity have not been sufficiently studied. Hence, a pot study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of ASB addition at 2, 4, and 6 % (w/w) on soil biochemical characteristics and the bioavailability of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants, as compared to the control (contaminated soil without ASB addition). The addition of ASB promoted plant growth (up to two-fold) and restored the damage to the ultrastructure of chloroplast organelles. In addition, ASB mitigated the adverse effects of HMs toxicity by decreasing oxidative damage, regulating the antioxidant system, improving soil physicochemical properties, and enhancing enzymatic activities. At the phylum level, ASB addition enhanced the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota, and Firmicutes while decreasing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. Furthermore, ASB application increased the relative abundance of several fungal taxa (Ascomycota and Mortierellomycota) while reducing the relative abundance of Basidiomycota in the soil. The ASB-induced improvement in soil properties, microbial community, and diversity led to a significant decrease in the DTPA-extractable HMs down to 41.0 %, 51.0 %, 52.0 %, and 35.0 % for Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, respectively, as compared to the control. The highest doses of ASB (ASB6) significantly reduced the metals content by 26.0 % for Cd, 78.0 % for Cu, 38.0 % for Pb, and 20.0 % for Zn in the roots, and 72.0 % for Cd, 67.0 % for Cu, 46.0 % for Pb, and 35.0 % for Zn in the shoots, as compared to the control. The structural equation model predicts that soil pH and organic matter are driving factors in reducing the availability and uptake of HMs. ASB could be used as a sustainable trial for remediation of HMs polluted soils and reducing metal content in edible plants.

Combined use of biochar and phosphate rocks on phosphorus and heavy metal availability: A meta-analysis

Biochar (BC) and phosphate rocks (PR) are alternative nutrient sources with multiple benefits for sustainable agriculture. The combination of these soil amendments serves two main purposes: to increase soil phosphorus (P) availability and to remediate heavy metal (HM) contamination. However, a further demonstration of the benefits and risks associated with the combined use of BC and PR (BC + PR) is needed, considering the specific characteristics of raw materials, soil types, experimental conditions, and climatic contexts. This meta-analysis is based on data from 28 selected studies, including 581 paired combinations evaluating effects on extraction and fractionation of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), and 290 paired combinations for soil labile and non-labile P. The results reveal that BC, PR, and BC + PR significantly increase soil labile and non-labile P, with BC + PR showing a 150% greater increase compared to BC alone. In tropical regions, substantial increases in P levels were observed with BC, PR, and BC + PR exhibiting increments of 317, 798, and 288%, respectively. In contrast, temperate climate conditions showed lower increases, with BC, PR, and BC + PR indicating 54, 123, and 88% rises in soil P levels. Moreover, BC, PR, and BC + PR effectively reduce the bioavailability of Cd and Pb in soil, with BC + PR demonstrating the highest efficacy in immobilizing Cd. The synergistic effect of BC + PR highlights their potential for Cd remediation. BC + PR effectively reduces the exchangeable fraction of Cd and Pb in soil, leading to their immobilization in more stable forms, such as the residual fraction. This study provides valuable insights into the remediation potential and P management benefits of BC and PR, highlighting their importance for sustainable agriculture and soil remediation practices.

Remediation and its biological responses to Cd(II)-Cr(VI)-Pb(II) multi-contaminated soil by supported nano zero-valent iron composites

Multi-metal contaminated soil has received extensive attention. The biochar and bentonite-supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) (BC-BE-nZVI) composite was synthesized in this study by the liquid-phase reduction method. Subsequently, the BC-BE-nZVI composite was applied to immobilize cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in simulated contaminated soil. The simultaneous immobilization efficiencies of Cd, Cr(VI), Cr_total, and Pb were achieved at 70.95 %, 100 %, 86.21 %, and 100 %, respectively. In addition, mobility and bioavailabilities of Cd, Cr, and Pb were significantly decreased and the risk of iron toxicity was reduced. Stabilized metal species in the contaminated soil (e.g., Cd(OH)₂, Cd-Fe-(OH)₂, Cr_xFe_1-xOOH, Cr_xFe_1-x(OH)₃, PbO, PbCrO₄, and Pb(OH)₂) were formed after the BC-BE-nZVI treatment. Thus, the immobilization mechanisms of Cd, Cr, and Pb, including adsorption, reduction, co-precipitation, and complexation co-exist with the metals. More importantly, bacterial richness, bacterial diversity, soil enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, urease, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase), and microbial activity were enhanced by applying the BC-BE-nZVI composite, thus increasing the soil metabolic function. Over all, this work applied a promising procedure for remediating multi- metal contaminated soil by using the BC-BE-nZVI composite.

Synthesis and application of starch-stablized Fe-Mn/biochar composites for the removal of lead from water and soil

Starch-stablized and Fe/Mn bimetals modified biochar derived from corn straw (SFM@CBC and SFM@CBC-350) were firstly prepared, characterized (FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, BET and XPS), and applied in Pb removal from water and soil. SFM@CBC and SFM@CBC-350 displayed highly effective adsorption performance of Pb²⁺ from wastewater with the maximum adsorption capacity of 170.91 mg g^-1 and 190.17 mg g^-1, respectively, which were much greater than that of FM@CBC (149.25 mg g^-1) and CBC (101.10 mg g^-1). Studies of adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics indicated that the absorption of Pb²⁺ by SFM@CBC and SFM@CBC-350 was spontaneous and endothermic reaction, and it was controlled by monolayer chemisorption. The mechanism studies indicated that Pb²⁺ removal involved with multiple mechanism, including complexation (dominant process confirmed by XPS analysis), physical adsorption, electrostatic attraction, and cation exchange. The reusability test demonstrated that SFM@CBC and SFM@CBC-350 had very good stability and reusability. In addition, in order to further explore Pb removal performance of the modified biochar, SFM@CBC-350 was used in soil-ryegrass pot systems. Compared with the controls, the addition of SFM@CBC-350 reduced Pb content in soil and ryegrass, increased the biomass and total chlorophyll content, reduced the activity of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD, MDA and POD) and ROS fluorescence intensity of ryegrass, thus alleviating Pb stress of ryegrass. Besides, the addition of SFM@CBC-350 could increase the richness and diversity of soil microorganisms, which was beneficial to the growth of ryegrass. Hence, SFM@CBC-350 has the potential of being used as a green, efficient and promising adsorbent in Pb removal from wastewater and soil.

Synergistic effect of floatable hydroxyapatite-modified biochar adsorption and low-level CaCl2 leaching on Cd removal from paddy soil

The utilization of recycled biochar combined with chemical leaching is an appropriate method to remove cadmium (Cd) from paddy soil. Some Cd-rich soil clay particulates (particulate Cd) are reported to be removed via biochar adsorption and the potential impact of biochar on soil properties need further study. The removal efficiencies and mechanisms of Cd from soil by using floatable hydroxyapatite modified biochar (HBC) combined with CaCl₂ were studied. Synergetic removal efficiencies of total Cd (46.5%) and bioavailable Cd (37.9%) from the paddy soil were achieved with 2% HBC and 1 mM CaCl₂. The increased soluble Cd in soil pore water by CaCl₂ leaching could be efficiently adsorbed on HBC, and removed by HBC collection, reducing the risk of the residual soluble Cd in soil pore water to rice plants caused by the inefficient drainage in the field. The suspendability of clay particulates in overlying water was little affected by the low-level CaCl₂ based on Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) calculation. Moreover, low-level CaCl₂ facilitated the accumulation of particulate Cd on the floating HBC via decreasing the interaction energy (by 25%) between clay particulates and HBC. HBC-mediated Cd migration contributed ~70% of total Cd removal, while soluble and particulate Cd removed through the drainage accounted for ~30%. Soil clay proportion maintained at 25.3% due to the replenishment of HBC residues. In addition, soil nutrient and physicochemical conditions were improved with HBC residues. This work provides a novel soil remediation method by using floatable biochar combined with low-level CaCl₂ for Cd-contaminated paddy soil remediation.
