Exploring Copper Oxide and Copper Sulfide for Non-Enzymatic Glucose Sensors: Current Progress and Future Directions

Millions of people worldwide are affected by diabetes, a chronic disease that continuously grows due to abnormal glucose concentration levels present in the blood. Monitoring blood glucose concentrations is therefore an essential diabetes indicator to aid in the management of the disease. Enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors presently account for the bulk of glucose sensors on the market. However, their disadvantages are that they are expensive and dependent on environmental conditions, hence affecting their performance and sensitivity. To meet the increasing demand, non-enzymatic glucose sensors based on chemically modified electrodes for the direct electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose are a good alternative to the costly enzymatic-based sensors currently on the market, and the research thereof continues to grow. Nanotechnology-based biosensors have been explored for their electronic and mechanical properties, resulting in enhanced biological signaling through the direct oxidation of glucose. Copper oxide and copper sulfide exhibit attractive attributes for sensor applications, due to their non-toxic nature, abundance, and unique properties. Thus, in this review, copper oxide and copper sulfide-based materials are evaluated based on their chemical structure, morphology, and fast electron mobility as suitable electrode materials for non-enzymatic glucose sensors. The review highlights the present challenges of non-enzymatic glucose sensors that have limited their deployment into the market.

Copper(II)-Incorporated Porphyrin-Based Porous Organic Polymer for a Nonenzymatic Electrochemical Glucose Sensor

To date, the fabrication of multifunctional nanoplatforms based on a porous organic polymer for electrochemical sensing of biorelevant molecules has received considerable attention in the search for a more active, robust, and sensitive electrocatalyst. Here, in this report, we have developed a new porous organic polymer based on porphyrin (TEG-POR) from a polycondensation reaction between a triethylene glycol-linked dialdehyde and pyrrole. The Cu(II) complex of the polymer Cu-TEG-POR shows high sensitivity and a low detection limit for glucose electro-oxidation in an alkaline medium. The characterization of the as-synthesized polymer was done by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and ¹³C CP-MAS solid-state NMR. The N₂ adsorption/desorption isotherm was carried out at 77 K to analyze the porous property. TEG-POR and Cu-TEG-POR both show excellent thermal stability. The Cu-TEG-POR-modified GC electrode shows a low detection limit (LOD) value of 0.9 μM and a wide linear range (0.001-1.3 mM) with a sensitivity of 415.8 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 toward electrochemical glucose sensing. The interference of the modified electrode from ascorbic acid, dopamine, NaCl, uric acid, fructose, sucrose, and cysteine was insignificant. Cu-TEG-POR exhibits acceptable recovery for blood glucose detection (97.25-104%), suggesting its scope in the future for selective and sensitive nonenzymatic glucose detection in human blood.

One-Stage Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Deposition of Gold Micropatterns on Dielectric Substrate

In this study, a simple one-stage laser-assisted metallization technique based on laser-induced backside wet etching and laser-induced chemical liquid-phase deposition is proposed. It allows for the fabrication of gold micropatterns inside the laser-written trace on a glass substrate. The reduction and deposition of gold inside and outside the laser-ablated channel were confirmed. The presence of Au nanoparticles on the surface of the laser-written micropattern is revealed by atomic force microscopy. The specific resistivity of the gold trace formed by ultrafast light-assisted metal micropatterning on a dielectric glass substrate is estimated as 0.04 ± 0.02 mΩ·cm. The obtained results empower the method of the selective laser-assisted deposition of metals on dielectrics and are of interest for the development of microelectronic components and catalysts, heaters, and sensors for lab-on-a-chip devices.

Experimental demonstration of multiple Fano resonances in a mirrored array of split-ring resonators on a thick substrate

This work demonstrates the first experimental observation of multiple Fano resonances in the terahertz range in a system based on an array of mirror-symmetric split-ring resonators deposited on low-loss and low-refractive index polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate. For the first time, selective surface activation induced by laser technology has been used to deposit a copper layer on a PTFE substrate with the further application of standard mask lithography for metasurface manufacturing.

Laser-assisted surface activation for fabrication of flexible non-enzymatic Cu-based sensors

A rapid and effective technique has been develped for the fabrication of sensor-active copper-based materials on the surface of such flexible polymers as terephthalate, polyethylene naphthalate, and polyimide using the method of laser surface modification. For this purpose, we optimized the polymer surface activation parameters using laser sources with a picosecond pulse duration for subsequent selective metallization within the activated region. Furthermore, the fabricated copper structures were modified with gold nanostructures and by electrochemical passivation to produce copper-gold and oxide-containing copper species, respectively. As a result, in comparison with pure copper electrodes, these composite materials exhibit much better electrocatalytic performance concerning the non-enzymatic identification of biologically important disease markers such as glucose, hydrogen peroxide, and dopamine.

Direct Laser Writing of Copper Micropatterns from Deep Eutectic Solvents Using Pulsed near-IR Radiation

In this study, we developed a method for the fabrication of electrically conductive copper patterns of arbitrary topology and films on dielectric substrates, by improved laser-induced synthesis from deep eutectic solvents. A significant increase in the processing efficiency was achieved by acceptor substrate pretreatment, with the laser-induced microplasma technique, using auxiliary glass substrates and optional laser post-processing of the recorded structures; thus, the proposed approach offers a complete manufacturing cycle, utilizing a single, commercially available, pulsed Yb fiber laser system. The potential implications of the presented research are amplified by the observation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) that may be useful for the further tuning of tracks' functional properties.

Effect of Substrates on Femtosecond Laser Pulse-Induced Reductive Sintering of Cobalt Oxide Nanoparticles

Direct writing of cobalt/cobalt oxide composites has attracted attention for its potential use in catalysts and detectors in microsensors. In this study, cobalt-based composite patterns were selectively formed on glass, polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates via the femtosecond laser reductive sintering of Co3O4 nanoparticles in an ambient atmosphere. A Co3O4 nanoparticle ink, including the nanoparticles, ethylene glycol as a reductant, and polyvinylpyrrolidone as a dispersant, was spin-coated onto the substrates. Near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses were then focused and scanned across the ink films to form the patterns. The non-sintered nanoparticles were subsequently removed from the substrate. The resulting sintered patterns were found to be made up of Co/CoO composites on the glass substrates, utilizing various pulse energies and scanning speeds, and the Co/CoO/Co3O4 composites were fabricated on both the PEN and PET substrates. These results suggest that the polymer substrates with low thermal resistance react with the ink during the reductive sintering process and oxidize the patterns more easily compared with the patterns on the glass substrates. Such a direct writing technique of cobalt/cobalt oxide composites is useful for the spatially selective printing of catalysts and detectors in functional microsensors.

Structures, Bonding and Sensor Properties of Some Alkaline o-Phthalatocuprates

Comprehensive study of the structure and bonding of disodium, dipotassium and diammonium di-o-phthalatocuprates(II) dihydrates has been undertaken. The crystal structure of ammonium o-phthalatocuprate has been determined. The identity of structures of phthalatocuprate chains in potassium and ammonium salts has been revealed. Vibrational spectra of all three compounds have been recorded, and the assignment of vibrational bands has been made. Force field calculations have shown a minor effect of outer-sphere cations (Na+, K+, NH4+) on both intraligand (C-O) and metal-ligand bond strengths. Synthesized compounds have been tested as electrochemical sensors on D-glucose, dopamine and paracetamol. Their sensitivity to analytes varied in the order of Na+ > K+ > NH4+. This effect has been explained by the more pronounced steric hindrance of copper ions in potassium and ammonium salts.

Laser-induced deposition of copper from deep eutectic solvents: optimization of chemical and physical parameters
