Bio-based arginine surface-modified ammonium polyphosphate: an efficient intumescent flame retardant for epoxy resin

Cellulose Nanofiber-Based Nanocomposite Films with Efficient Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Fire-Resistant Performance

Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) has been widely used as a flexible and lightweight polymer matrix for electromagnetic shielding and thermally conductive composite films because of its excellent mechanical strength, environmental performance, and low cost. However, the lack of flame retardancy seriously hinders its further application. Herein, renewable and biomass-sourced l-arginine (AR) was used to surface-modify ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and an environmentally friendly biobased flame retardant was synthesized by the coordination of zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO4·7H2O), which was named AAZ. AAZ was deposited on the surface of CNF by electrostatic adsorption and Zn2+ complexation. The biobased compatibilizer Triton X-100 was employed to assist the exfoliation of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and their dispersion in the CNF matrix. Due to the formation of a dense lamellar layer resembling a shell structure, the CNF/GNPs composite films with a tensile strength of 52 MPa were obtained via vacuum-assisted filtration. Because the phosphorus-containing group produces a protective layer of PxOy compound and promotes the formation of a carbon layer by CNF and the combustion releases ammonia gas, the fire-resistant performance of the composite films was greatly improved. Compared with the pure CNF film, the composite film exhibits 33% reduction in PHRR value and 40% reduction in THR. In addition, the CNF/GNPs composite film with 20 wt % GNPs possessed high conductivity (2079.2 S/m) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (37 dB). The ultrathin CNF/GNPs composite films have excellent potential for use as efficient flame retardant and EMI shielding materials.

Fabricating Multiphasic Angiogenic Scaffolds Using Amyloid/Roxadustat-Assisted High-Temperature Protein Printing

Repairing multiphasic defects is cumbersome. This study presents new soft and hard scaffold designs aimed at facilitating the regeneration of multiphasic defects by enhancing angiogenesis and improving cell attachment. Here, the nonimmunogenic, nontoxic, and cost-effective human serum albumin (HSA) fibril (HSA-F) was used to fabricate thermostable (up to 90 °C) and hard printable polymers. Additionally, using a 10.0 mg/mL HSA-F, an innovative hydrogel was synthesized in a mixture with 2.0% chitosan-conjugated arginine, which can gel in a cell-friendly and pH physiological environment (pH 7.4). The presence of HSA-F in both hard and soft scaffolds led to an increase in significant attachment of the scaffolds to the human periodontal ligament fibroblast (PDLF), human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC), and human osteoblast. Further studies showed that migration (up to 157%), proliferation (up to 400%), and metabolism (up to 210%) of these cells have also improved in the direction of tissue repair. By examining different in vitro and ex ovo experiments, we observed that the final multiphasic scaffold can increase blood vessel density in the process of per-vascularization as well as angiogenesis. By providing a coculture environment including PDLF and HUVEC, important cross-talk between these two cells prevails in the presence of roxadustat drug, a proangiogenic in this study. In vitro and ex ovo results demonstrated significant enhancements in the angiogenic response and cell attachment, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed design. This approach holds promise for the regeneration of complex tissue defects by providing a conducive environment for vascularization and cellular integration, thus promoting tissue healing.

A Rigid-Flexible and Multi-Siloxane Bridge Strategy for Toughening Epoxy Resin with Promising Flame Retardancy, Mechanical, and Dielectric Properties

Developing highly efficient and multifunctional epoxy resins (EPs) that overcome the shortcomings of flammability and brittleness is crucial for pursuing sustainable and safe application but remains a huge challenge. In this paper, a novel biomass-containing intumescent flame retardant containing a rigid-flexible and multi-siloxane bridge structure (DPB) was synthesized using siloxane; 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene 10-oxide (DOPO); and biomass vanillin. DPB could facilitate the formation of a carbon residual with an intumescent structure, which effectively blocked the propagation of heat and oxygen. As a result, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) of DPB/EP-7.5 decreased by 38.8% and 45.0%, respectively. In terms of mechanical properties, the tensile and flexural elongations at break of DPB/EP-7.5 increased by 77.2% and 105.3%, respectively. Impressively, DPB/EP-7.5 had excellent dielectric properties, with a dielectric constant of 2.5-2.9. This was due to the Si-O bonds (multi-siloxane bridges) contained in DPB/EP, which can quench the polarization behavior of the hydroxyl group. This paper provides a facile strategy for the preparation of multifunctional EP, which will pave the way for the promotion and application of EP in the high-end field.
