The impact of surface Cu2+ of ZnO/(Cu1-x Zn x )O heterostructured nanowires on the adsorption and chemical transformation of carbonyl compounds

Recent advancements in physical and chemical MEMS sensors

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMSs) are microdevices fabricated using semiconductor-fabrication technology, especially those with moving components. This technology has become more widely used in daily life, e.g., in mobile phones, printers, and cars. In this review, MEMS sensors are largely classified as physical or chemical ones. Physical sensors include pressure, inertial force, acoustic, flow, temperature, optical, and magnetic ones. Chemical sensors include gas, odorant, ion, and biological ones. The fundamental principle of sensing is reading out either the movement or electrical-property change of microstructures caused by external stimuli. Here, sensing mechanisms of the sensors are explained using diagrams with equivalent circuits to show the similarity. Examples of multiple parameter measurement with single sensors (e.g. quantum sensors or resonant pressure and temperature sensors) and parallel sensor integration are also introduced.

Water-Selective Nanostructured Dehumidifiers for Molecular Sensing Spaces

Humidity and moisture effects, frequently called water poisoning, in surroundings are inevitable for various molecular sensing devices, strongly affecting their sensing characteristics. Here, we demonstrate a water-selective nanostructured dehumidifier composed of ZnO/TiO₂/CaCl₂ core-shell heterostructured nanowires for molecular sensing spaces. The fabricated nanostructured dehumidifier is highly water-selective without detrimental adsorptions of various volatile organic compound molecules and can be repeatedly operated. The thermally controllable and reversible dehydration process of CaCl₂·nH₂O thin nanolayers on hydrophilic ZnO/TiO₂ nanowire surfaces plays a vital role in such water-selective and repeatable dehumidifying operations. Furthermore, the limitation of detection for sensing acetone and nonanal molecules in the presence of moisture (relative humidity ∼ 90%) was improved more than 20 times using nanocomposite sensors by operating the developed nanostructured dehumidifier. Thus, the proposed water-selective nanostructured dehumidifier offers a rational strategy and platform to overcome water poisoning issues for various molecular and gas sensors.

Mechanistic Approach for Long-Term Stability of a Polyethylene Glycol-Carbon Black Nanocomposite Sensor

Polymer-carbon nanocomposite sensor is a promising molecular sensing device for electronic nose (e-nose) due to its printability, variety of polymer materials, and low operation temperature; however, the lack of stability in an air environment has been an inevitable issue. Here, we demonstrate a design concept for realizing long-term stability in a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-carbon black (CB) nanocomposite sensor by understanding the underlying phenomena that cause sensor degradation. Comparison of the sensing properties and infrared spectroscopy on the same device revealed that the oxidation-induced consumption of PEG is a crucial factor for the sensor degradation. According to the mechanism, we introduced an antioxidizing agent (i.e., ascorbic acid) into the PEG-CB nanocomposite sensor to suppress the PEG oxidation and successfully demonstrated the long-term stability of sensing properties under an air environment for 30 days, which had been difficult in conventional polymer-carbon nanocomposite sensors.

Oxide nanowire microfluidics addressing previously-unattainable analytical methods for biomolecules towards liquid biopsy

Nanowire microfluidics using a combination of self-assembly and nanofabrication technologies is expected to be applied to various fields due to its unique properties. We have been working on the fabrication of nanowire microfluidic devices and the development of analytical methods for biomolecules using the unique phenomena generated by the devices. The results of our research are not just limited to the development of nanospace control with "targeted dimensions" in "targeted arrangements" with "targeted materials/surfaces" in "targeted spatial locations/structures" in microfluidic channels, but also cover a wide range of analytical methods for biomolecules (extraction, separation/isolation, and detection) that are impossible to achieve with conventional technologies. Specifically, we are working on the extraction technology "the cancer-related microRNA extraction method in urine," the separation technology "the ultrafast and non-equilibrium separation method for biomolecules," and the detection technology "the highly sensitive electrical measurement method." These research studies are not just limited to the development of biomolecule analysis technology using nanotechnology, but are also opening up a new academic field in analytical chemistry that may lead to the discovery of new pretreatment, separation, and detection principles.

Nanowire-based sensor electronics for chemical and biological applications

Detection and recognition of chemical and biological species via sensor electronics are important not only for various sensing applications but also for fundamental scientific understanding. In the past two decades, sensor devices using one-dimensional (1D) nanowires have emerged as promising and powerful platforms for electrical detection of chemical species and biologically relevant molecules due to their superior sensing performance, long-term stability, and ultra-low power consumption. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the recent progress and achievements in 1D nanowire synthesis, working principles of nanowire-based sensors, and the applications of nanowire-based sensor electronics in chemical and biological analytes detection and recognition. In addition, some critical issues that hinder the practical applications of 1D nanowire-based sensor electronics, including device reproducibility and selectivity, stability, and power consumption, will be highlighted. Finally, challenges, perspectives, and opportunities for developing advanced and innovative nanowire-based sensor electronics in chemical and biological applications are featured.
