Facile synthesis of multiphase cobalt-iron spinel with enriched oxygen vacancies as a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst

Amorphous/Crystalline Phases Mixed Nanosheets Array Rich in Oxygen Vacancies Boost Oxygen Evolution Reaction of Spinel Oxides in Alkaline Media

As promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, spinel-type oxides face the bottleneck of weak adsorption for oxygen-containing intermediates, so it is challenging to make a further breakthrough in remarkably lowering the OER overpotential. In this study, a novel strategy is proposed to substantially enhance the OER activity of spinel oxides based on amorphous/crystalline phases mixed spinel FeNi2O4 nanosheets array, enriched with oxygen vacancies, in situ grown on a nickel foam (NF). This unique architecture is achieved through a one-step millisecond laser direct writing method. The presence of amorphous phases with abundant oxygen vacancies significantly enhances the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates and changes the rate-determining step from OH*→O* to O*→OOH*, which greatly reduces the thermodynamic energy barrier. Moreover, the crystalline phase interweaving with amorphous domains serves as a conductive shortcut to facilitate rapid electron transfer from active sites in the amorphous domain to NF, guaranteeing fast OER kinetics. Such an anodic electrode exhibits a nearly ten fold enhancement in OER intrinsic activity compared to the pristine counterpart. Remarkably, it demonstrates record-low overpotentials of 246 and 315 mV at 50 and 500 mA cm-2 in 1 m KOH with superior long-term stability, outperforming other NiFe-based spinel oxides catalysts.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by nanocomposites towards the removal of sulfamethoxazole: Performance and mechanism

Heterogeneous activation of peroxomonosulfate (PMS) has been extensively studied for the degradation of antibiotics. The cobalt ferrite spinel exhibits good activity in the PMS activation, but suffers from the disadvantage of low PMS utilization efficiency. Herein, the nanocomposites including FeS, CoS2, CoFe2O4 and Fe2O3 were synthesized by hydrothermal method and used for the first time to activate PMS for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The nanocomposites showed superior catalytic activity in which the SMX could be completely removed at 40 min, 0.1 g L-1 nanocomposites and 0.4 mM PMS with the first order kinetic constant of 0.2739 min-1. The PMS utilization efficiency was increased by 29.4% compared to CoFe2O4. Both radicals and non-radicals contributed to the SMX degradation in which high-valent metal oxo dominated. The mechanism analysis indicated that sulfur modification, on one hand, enhanced the adsorption of nanocomposites for PMS, and promoted the redox cycles of Fe2+/Fe3+ and Co2+/Co3+ on the other hand. This study provides new way to enhance the catalytic activity and PMS utilization efficiency of spinel cobalt ferrite.

High power density output and durability of microbial fuel cells enabled by dispersed cobalt nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped carbon as the cathode electrocatalyst

To endow microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with low cost, long-term stability and high-power output, a novel cobalt-based cathode electrocatalyst (Nano-Co@NC) is synthesized from a polygonal metal-organic framework ZIF-67. After calcining the resultant ZIF-67, the as-synthesized Nano-Co@NC is characteristic of cobalt nanoparticles (Nano-Co) embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) that inherits the morphology of ZIF-67 with a large surface area. The Nano-Co particles that are highly dispersed and firmly fixed on NC not only ensure electrocatalytic activity of Nano-Co@NC toward the oxygen reduction reaction on the cathode, but also inhibit the growth of non-electrogenic bacteria on the anode. Consequently, the MFC using Nano-Co@NC as the cathode electrocatalyst demonstrates excellent performance, delivering a comparable initial power density and exhibiting far better durability than that using Pt/C (20 wt%) as the cathode electrocatalyst. The low cost and the excellent performance of Nano-Co@NC make it promising for MFCs to be used in practice.
